Once again, there's news on when we might expect to see the long-awaited follow up to D'Angelo's Voodoo. In an interview with Billboard, D'Angelo's manager, Kevin Liles, said that the album is "definitely" coming in 2014.

"There'll be an album this year: there's 14 records so far, we might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now," he said. "Definitely, he'll be back."

Additionally, Liles said a tour would follow. "We'll probably start an international tour in October, we'll come back ," he said. "We're doing a James Brown tribute in August and some one-off things. But the touring will probably start in October and 2015."

In the Billboard interview, Liles talked a little bit about what the album (which doesn't have an official name) will sound like:

To limit it to soul is not the case, because there is a rock influence. But at the same time, it's very melodic and there's an influence of all the things he loves: there's James Brown, there's Prince, and everything people grew up loving D'Angelo for, from Brown Sugar to Voodoo. It's a mixture and an evolution of where he is right now. And you have to think that when you have the opportunity to work 10 years on an album, that album's truly gonna be what you want it to be. Is it limited to the kind of sound that he did with the earlier records? No, it's not.
He also talked about why it's taken so long to come out:

Here's the thing: with D'Angelo it was a process. He didn't perform for 10 years and he's been working on an album for the past 12 years. I actually got him to go out and do 30 shows , and then we did some Brothers in Arms shows . I said, "We have to get motivated around what people want to hear from you, and what does it mean to come back to that space?" He very bluntly put it, "Kev, the studio and the stage: that's my lifeblood. Now that I've touched it again, now that I see it again, I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have -- the album -- that I take it to the point where it's all it can be."
Earlier this year, some footage was shot of D'Angelo recording in the studio. D'Angelo has been performing new songs live since he returned to the stage in 2012. In 2011, ?uestlove, who has been working on the album, told Pitchfork it was "pretty much 97% done".

Are there tons of songs in the vaults?

Fuck that his job is to record music. If you're an artist you can't NOT create.

How does an artist go 14 years without releasing music?

Look at the greats like Bob Dylan and Neil Young...these guys never stop creating.

Sure, some of their music is not good and may have been better left on the cutting room floor but at least they produce.

If you record 1,000 songs and only half of them are good, you still have 500 good songs.

Is it better to be 100% when you only have 30 songs in your entire catelogue?

Rant over.

Looking forward to the album by damn.

i mean of course it is, that's why you didn't answer

but yeah i'd rather the guy put together an album he feels good about than force himself to release music to satisfy ppl who apparently don't even like his music to begin w/

but even if he never releases anything, as a fan i have two albums that are better than any combination of two albums out of most artists' catalogues

and i love the live record from 95 too

You've seen my record (c) J. Bauer

I'm tired of talking about this shit. I'm just happy that D'Angelo has recently done a spattering of shows so that you guys now have some degree of validation and at least a little ground upon which you can stand and say "See! He's working in *some* way!"

2-3 years ago cats were making the same "why can't you just let D be an artist" argument when back then he hadn't even been seen publicly in years (outside of mugshots and court appearances) and was not evidently creating art on any serious level.

Which is why I'm happy that now there's a little latitude to make that argument. There are still deep problems with the argument but I'm not gonna pull that thread... Like I said, God bless y'all.

When I talk about D'Angelo, you stalk me across the boards, insulting me and talking about how I have nothing better to do than serve as the "professional hater" of this one particular artist.

When I decide NOT to talk about D'Angelo, you stalk my old posts across the boards, trying to provoke me to comment.

A brother can't win.

24. "not necessarily...."
In response to Reply # 11

an artist who desires to present their work for consumption produces and releases their work...

but someone who is not ...for whatever reason....putting their work out for consumption, would still be an artist...

people who...again for whatever reason....want to dismiss D'Angelo as an artist because he has taken so long between released projects are placing an unrealistic importance on themselves as an audience or consumer...

it's not about you....

If you dug what D'Angelo did...great...if you didn't...fine...

if you dig what is coming...great..if you don't..that's cool too..

that's the great thing about being a human being....free will....

D'Angelo is under no obligation to do anything for anyone...he doesn't owe an audience anything..

people really need to get over themselves and grow up.... Go watch somebody lip sync in a concert or "sing" over pre-recorded tracks...or bump some n^gga auto-tune rap-singing on some R&B track... if it ain't for you...fukk with what is for you....

personally...people who sit back and rejoice in other's shortcomings or problems ..or other people's lack of production are come across as insecure weirdos after a while...they speaking louder about themselves then they are the artist who they are so ravenous about critiquing....

People don't seem to understand my initial post which lead to the replies of "it's not about you"..."D doesn't have to release music"..."he's still an artist, he just doesn't care to present it to his fans"

People really can't be this fucking stupid in real life...I refuse to believe it.

1 I never said D owed me anything.

2 I never said D wasn't an artist.

3 I never said shit about myself

I don't give a fuck if D releases music ever again or not.

It's not that important to me.

What I'm saying is...how do you do absolutely nothing for 14 years?

That shit is unfathomable to me. And that's regardless if you're a musician or any other type of profession.

The thing about the artist aspect is that artists NEED to create.

Like I said, if he has 100 songs in the vaults and just doesn't care to release them then that's fine. At least he was creating.

But I don't think that he does. And I may be wrong but I think his ass was actually doing nothing.

For 14 years!

And why is the go to response that someone is mad all the damn time. If that isn't the dumbest shit on OKP then I don't know what it.

Why would I be mad about D not recording and releasing music?

I just can't fathom an artist not creating.

Two classics?!?!?!?!?

D'angelo's best moments are cover songs... I really hope he writes material that is a little bit faster than the two records. This guy is sleeping...

He hasn't in any shape or form lived up to any of the hype that's been built up around him.

What I hate are all these yearly announcements that the album is dropping, only for the shit to never drop. Just STFU and drop it when you're ready. Even Dr. Dre, after a while, just stopped talking about Detox.

i doubt they sat around bitching & moaning when he still did it

in fact, without all the attention it brought him, maybe folks ignoring him would have caused him to stop

idk

the other thing is that *technically* it's not been D making all these promises, but ppl spaeaking on his behalf (and possibly w/o asking him first)

but yeah, idk

i hope he doesn't stop making music

no male R&B/Soul singer in my lifetime compares (to ME, i am hardly a modern soul afficianado)

You said "these guys never stop creating" as if there aren't other great artists who have had hiatuses longer than the one D has been on. I brought up Sly to show that a great artist can go on a much longer hiatus than D has. To which you have no real retort.

My entire point is that D'angelo made an album in 95 and another in 00 and then vanished.

I never said no other artist took a hiatus, but they usually come after a long run of non-stop grinding.

You brought up Sly and I simply said he put in much more work prior to his hiatus. That makes a BIG difference. He probably burned himself out.

There was no way D got to that point.

By Ryan Reed

D'Angelo

D'Angelo

Mychal Watts/WireImage

D'Angelo is set to headline the epic 10th edition of the AfroPunk Festival, which takes place on Saturday, August 23rd and Sunday, August 24th at Brooklyn's Commodore Barry Park. This year's installment features four stages of music, with an eclectic lineup rounded out by soul singer Lianne La Havas, Ice-T's thrash-metal band Body Count, hardcore punks Trash Talk, singer-songwriter-bassist Meshell Ndegeocello and experimental hip-hop outfit Shabazz Palaces.

Check out the highlights of the 2013 AfroPunk Festival

The fest – described in a press release as "a celebration of the all of the diverse communities populating the modern DIY landscape" – will include the heavy/punk-oriented Black Stage, a Speaker's Corner ("where the politically minded can speak theirs"), an Art Wall featuring original works from visual artists, various food trucks and the Spin Thrift Market (featuring 100 vendors selling crafts and goods).

The lineup also includes Cold Specks, the Internet, Straight Line Stitch, SZA, Fishbone, Alice Smith, Valerie June, Unlocking the Truth, Cakes da Killa, the Tontons, Gordon Voidwell, Clipping, Denitia and Sene, BLXPLTN and Cipher and H09909, along with various DJ sets and dance music from local and underground musicians. More artists are expected to be announced, and additional details are available on the festival's website.

The disparate range of acts is impressive, but the biggest draw is clearly D'Angelo. The reclusive R&B star has spent the past 12 years recording, tinkering with (and delaying – and delaying again) his long-awaited follow-up to 2000's acclaimed Voodoo – though in a recent interview with Billboard, D'Angelo's manager, Kevin Liles, said the LP is set to arrive at some point in 2014, with a tour to follow (possibly starting in October and running into 2015).

"t's very melodic and there's an influence of all the things he loves: there's James Brown, there's Prince, and everything people grew up loving D'Angelo for, from Brown Sugar to Voodoo." Liles said, describing the album. "It's a mixture and an evolution of where he is right now. And you have to think that when you have the opportunity to work 10 years on an album, that album's truly gonna be what you want it to be. Is it limited to the kind of sound that he did with the earlier records? No, it's not."

In a recent interview with author Nelson George, the singer was cautiously dismissive of the "neo-soul" tag affixed to his early work and hinted at what his future music would sound like. "I respect it for what it is, but anytime you put a name on something, you just put it in a box," said the singer. "You want to be in a position where you can grow as an artist. You never want to be told, 'Hey, well, you're a neo-soul artist.' Right now, I'm not. We're going someplace else."

so i'm sure him and his team have discussed how they can come back the strongest. obviously goes for the music side of things as well.

i'm thinking:

the mumbling
didn't someone on here mention he was working on his pronunciation?

the melody/structure
voodoo was mostly laid back grooves & didn't have a "dreamin eyes". maybe this one will. "another life" seems promising.

the funk
last year quest called the new album a true funk record. well the "in my hair" cover took it there imo & i still think "chicken grease" is kind of funky. but "left & right" is fakin it. "sugah daddy" might get there, but he needs to come stronger for it to be a true funk record.

the context
quest also mentioned that d wants to break from the whole hiphop context. he seems to sonically go a different route.

the length
the grooves on voodoo were stretched out, all around 5-6 minute mark i guess. d has been listening to the beatles right? maybe not only for melody and song structure but also for song length (< 3 min)...

whatever though. i just hope he releases this thing. rather late than never.

but if he drops a single in august & goes on tour then I would'nt be surprised if the record follows shortly after...

look at radiohead and beyonce. those records came out of nowhere.

it's doable. just highly unlikely given d's history of releasing stuff.

In response to Reply # 0

I was 14 years old when Voodoo came out.

"You'll be at LEAST double your age by the time D'Angelo puts out another album."

I couldn't have fathomed that back then.

Now?

It's reality.

"Let D'Angelo be an ARTIST."

"D'Angelo doesn't OWE you guys anything!!"

It's comical. Around what year did those two excuses start getting posted? After he went five years without releasing a single sound? A decade?

He/they should've announced his retirement years ago. That's the only way I can even wrap my head around this shit.

Damn.

Almost 15 years!

Yes indeed. It's going to be phenomenal and not only am I looking forward to the day it drops, but I'm also very confident that's It's gonna silence all the critics and naysayers that's been throwing so much shade at him for years for being out the limelight for so long. Everything I've heard so far during the shows (the new stuff) are amazing and he's somehow managed to keep somewhat of the same feel and vibe he's known to have on all his albums. Yet, I know that diggin' deeper on the musical side of things in regards to how the guitar is more than likely gonna play a more prominent role this time around. With that said, God bless brother Michael Archer and I so look forward to experiencing Phase 3 of this man's musical journey..

going to what basically amounts to an artists message board and trying to make a name as said artists critiquer in chief so to speak..

savy move..

since you are so proud of your position.... and seem to believe that the opinion that you've stated...over....and over.....and over.....and over again.... even during the year's where the artist hasn't released any work.....

but my question is has it benefited you.... I mean is it on your resume "Okayplayer/the lesson official D'Angelo naysayer"?? I mean is it in your bio???

Specifically when this particular subject comes up, all of a sudden you guys get super-personal and want to make it all about ME.

As if I don't have the right to anonymously opine on music here like anybody else.

I appraise D'Angelo's music on this board. You certainly have the right to appraise my opinion, but why are you so interested in ME? If you got an issue with things I say on this board, feel free to surgically pick my words apart. I actually welcome that, because I would love to have an actual music debate here that's not all pissy and personal.

But why on earth are you looking for photos of me? What does that have to do with anything?

Y'all weird as fuck. I appraise D's music so you wanna appraise what I look like?

smh

The photo comment was an aside.

I'm curious about what you do because I figure if you're that passionate about music and have 80,000+ posts, you might actually write something *somewhere else*.

I'm not terribly interested in you. Think of how much you've posted over, say, the past five years and how often I've replied. See? Exactly.

Now, Warren on the other hand, who you describe in post #48 of this very thread as "mad pussy," might rightfully be a bit upset at you.

In response to Reply # 102

If you like my opinions... great.

If you disagree with my opinions, then be my guest to express your objection. But I think you should address the words I actually write *on this board*.... anything I do outside of this board is really none of your goddamn business, including what I look like.

If I had prefaced my "appraisal" of D'Angelo with claims of authority based on being some kind of music industry insider, then I could understand you being interested in verifying my credibility on those grounds.

However, I have never done that. I have never positioned my opinion as anything other than the opinion of just another faceless asshole shooting the shit on Internet... so why not just address what I have said *on this board* and quit worrying about my life outside it? Seriously, the shit creeps me out.

But anyway, spirit, I already know this is your go-to tactic. Whenever I have expressed any commentary on this board about Black American music and Black American culture, rather than addressing the substance (or lack thereof) in my comments, you have typically elected to throw up some diversionary personal attack like "Aren't thousands of people dying of Ebola in Nigeria while you're posting here?" or some stupid shit that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Yeah, I know that's your steez. It's a pretty bitchmade move, imho...

So yes... if you don't like my opinions about D'Angelo and his music (or failure to release music), I am always open to discuss these issues (that's what I want!) as long as you keep the subject to MUSIC and things that are actually said *on this board* and not outside of it.

Thanks.

http://www.vulture.com/2014/06/all-the-times-we-were-promised-a-dangelo-album.html

‘It'll Be Out This Year’: A History of D’Angelo Album Promises
By Brennan Carley

Earlier today, D’Angelo’s manager confirmed with Billboard that the singer’s long-awaited follow-up to 2001’s Voodoo is coming sooner rather than later. “There'll be an album this year,” said Kevin Liles. “There's 14 records so far, we might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he'll be back.” The problem is, we’ve heard that before. A lot. So many times, actually, that it is possible to make a long list of D'Angelo's broken album promises — which we did, below. Cross your fingers and pray for soul, folks.

April 2005
Rumors begin swirling on message boards about the Voodoo follow-up. “Damn near an hour and a half of new music,” one fan speculated. Working title(s): D or James River

September 2008
“I Found My Smile Again,” the first new D’Angelo single in years, hits iTunes unexpectedly, a supposed precursor to a 2009 album. “He's coming back,” his manager Lindsay Guion told Billboard. This is neither the first nor the last time we’ll hear this. Don’t hold your breath.

February 2009
Following rumors of John Mayer, Mark Ronson, and Prince’s involvement on the still-unnamed album, Guion talked to Billboard again to confirm the identities of collaborators like Cee-Lo Green, Raphael Saadiq, Roy Hargrove, and Q-Tip.

August 2010
More than a year after rumors of his involvement in D’Angelo’s LP, Mark Ronson confirmed that he was set to spend time in the studio with the R&B singer working on songs. “I have equal parts intimidation and awe and excitement,” he said. The sands of time sweep on.

December 2011
More than a year passes without any news. In December, Questlove sat down with Pitchfork to talk all things D’Angelo. “For all intents and purposes, this album is the black version of Smile,” he said. “There's stuff on there I was amazed at, like new music patches I've never heard before.” According to Quest, the album is now 97 percent done.

January 2012
D’Angelo hit the road again, premiering two new songs, “Sugar Daddy” and “The Charade,” at a tour stop in Stockholm.

June 2012
Questlove brought D’Angelo out onstage at Bonnaroo for his Super Jam set. Later that month, D’Angelo gave his first extensive interview in a decade to GQ. Nobody has any idea when the album is coming, but sources confirm that he’s been in the studio working relentlessly. “This year would be nice,” said Tom Corson, the president of RCA.

July 2012
Mary J. Blige and D’Angelo teamed up for the Liberation Tour, with several dates on the East Coast. No new music is released.

January 2013:
“Right now, we're just tightening up the loose ends,” Quest told Billboard. “But I still stand by, 99% of it is done." This feels like déjà vu.

March 2013
D’Angelo and Questlove played an intimate show at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City. Before the final song, Questlove turned to D’Angelo and asked if the album was almost finished. “Yes,” D’Angelo said. Oh.

June 2013
“Without a doubt, we will have an album in 2013. Without a doubt,” Questlove told an interviewer during a book tour for his memoir Mo’ Meta Blues. Later that month, at a Red Bull Music Academy appearance, he went further: “Ten songs are now mastered,” he said. “I know for a fact there's only one song left to be mastered on that record, so it's definitely a fourth quarter release for that record … It has taken 11 years to make, but the amazing thing about it is that it still sounds like it came out tomorrow. ” D’Angelo himself chimed in during another interview, adding, “I’m dying for people to hear the new stuff.” “So just release it then,” people respond.

August 2013
D’Angelo canceled tour dates in the wake of a medical emergency. What does this mean for the state of the album?

March 2014
In the spirit of crushing his fans' hopes and dreams, D’Angelo released a live version of a song he played in 1995. This is not what anybody wants, but you know the saying: “You get what you get.”

June 2014
"There'll be an album this year." Don't hold your breath?

and it's amazing how you've been able to preserve that youthful naiveté... i wish I were that innocent, so open-hearted that after all these years I could get excited as a kid on Christmas morning when ?uesto compares the new D' album to the most avant grade works of Sly Stone and Miles Davis.

Cute.

(Btw no disrespect to 15 but at this point I think he is either trolling or deliberately sabotaging D or.... something else After all these years, he ain't learn. He keeps doing it and raising the stakes higher and higher... Fascinating.)

Okay... if he truly feels that, who am I to take that away from him?

It's okay to feel whatever you feel as long as you know that the fact that you feel it does not necessarily make it true.

with that being the case...it's off-base to assume the guy is trying to do something purposely detrimental to D'. That has no legs to stand on at all, and comes across as some juvenile made up ish honestly.

it's ok to disagree with what someone thinks...not necessary to make up motives for them. Just say you disagree and explain why....

we're talking about opinions regarding someone's subjective tastes..or likes/dislikes etc.... so really there is no right or wrong.... there are just different opinions.

I found this one: "I think in his head, if he doesn't surpass Eddie Hazel, Santana, James Blood Ulmer and Frank Zappa as an axeman, he doesn't want to share it with the world."

from here: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/questlove-new-dangelo-album-will-be-a-radical-180-turn-20120618#ixzz3A8kQBWYF

Nothing in there about Quest saying D is equal to or better than Zappa

So what are y'all talking about?

though in a way, it's just as damaging.

to be fair, though: the famous Zappa quote was not presented as a direct quote so it's hard to tell exactly what ?uest said. But it's couched between equally harmful direct quotes too.

Instead of searching for photos of me, you should go look for the article (which was widely publicized) so you can keep up with the A - B exchange that was none of your business to begin with.

When did I ever say I was "searching" for a photo of you? I said I had never seen one. If you can't read well on here, how can I trust your ability to read and properly quote these unnamed publications that you're talking about? SMH.

The GQ post did not quote ?uest's post from here directly. Here's what it said:

“The one benefit of this eleven-year sabbatical was he used 10,000 Gladwellian hours to master the guitar,” says Questlove, who compares D to Frank Zappa. “He can play the shit out of it, and I don’t mean no Lil Wayne shit.”

But yes... the article does seem to be alluding to ?uest's comments here.

I wonder where the hell that post went...

it also hinted to d stepping away from the hiphop/ dilla influence on this next record. focusing on a more traditional r&b record without trying to sound old aka the amy winehouse/ raph saadiq route. his "parade" even, if i remember correctly.

yeah where did that post go?

In response to Reply # 75

that Questlove has heard in terms of what has happened during the recording process of the album that reminds Quest of Zappa.

**shrug**

I wouldn't assume that means that he's making a comparison in terms of proficiency on the instrument, as much as it's a stylistic reference....pretty confident about that based on what else Quest said..

but again....I'm not going to waste my time trying to figure out why quest said that being that what he's said was based upon him hearing things I have yet to hear....

but...if you want to make the leap to saying that Quest is trying to "sabotage"... (your word) D' by the things he's saying...then g'head...

that's just foolish imo...

he has enough clout to basically champion the album to release
he's the bigger celebrity involved in the project and that's a huge cache
plus he has one of the better indy pr firms, LIFE OR DEATH PR (ofwgkta, wavves, killer mike, mac miller, wu tang, king krule) behind him

poster claimed he'll have a tough time looking at the album objectively because it took so long to come out...

whether or not something is of a particular quality...letting something like when it came out...or how long it took to come out seems a bit off to allow that to blur one's vision..

but to each they own.

after all this time, after all these years of being told james river or whatever it's called was on the verge of being released

AND

that it's fucking genius

that album has TONNES of expectation to live up to.

blaming d'angelo's fans for that is silly and shortsighted.

nothing exists in a vacuum.

In response to Reply # 76

I don't personally have expectations per se about an album before I hear it....

I try and stay open to what an artist is going to bring on a particular project....and either I dig it..or I don't..

when you have too many pre-expectations...you're likely to get disappointed on some level....I find that I enjoy music and entertainment in general MORE if I take the approach of "Hey...this is what the artist wanted to do....let's check it out"

the other thing though...

I mean D'Angelo has a particular "issue" he's been dealing with over the course of this layoff... Some seem to be purposely ignoring that fact and acting like the delay is based upon some purposeful strategic move...

Not every person who has had those type of issues have had the opportunity to come back from them....with that being the case...he can take as long as he likes...or he could completely walk away from the game....whatever he does..it's on him really.... I just wish the brother the best.

to deny that would be unfair.

and questloves word should always be taken with a pinch of salt when it comes to dangelo.

but regurgitating the same references to tease us suggests that either this record cant even inspire questlove to say anything interesting about it, or that everyone working on it has lost all self awareness, that even THEY dont know whats already been said anymore (doesnt exactly make the sessions sound especially inspiring).

the lesson should start a kitty and buy dangelo some new music (someone send him some william onyeabor).

at least maxwell made out that he was listening to antonio carlos jobim and panda bear.

it actually doesn't suggest that at all. Again, if you or anyone else would like to take Quest words in that direction...and make assumptions regarding motives..that's fine...but that would be a quest of your own choosing.

You are assuming that Quest's words are to "tease" fans..

but what if what he is saying is actually legitimately how he feels about a project that he's worked on and heard, and that none of us have heard???

I understand that the wait may be frustrating, but I don't see any reason why that should make folks start applying their own motives to what is being said about the project.

r that everyone working on it
>has lost all self awareness, that even THEY dont know whats
>already been said anymore (doesnt exactly make the sessions
>sound especially inspiring).

again...conjecture...assumptions....not based on any facts...

I dead serious entered this thread, read a few messages and thought 'oh yeah this thread is from months ago'. Then I check the date and it's two days ago?! I don't even remember coming into this thread two days ago! What's he doing to everyone?!

peep

....all this time that he's been away and on the hush has built up all of this anticipation for it. And dig...the more time he remains on the hush and on the low, the more that anticipation is setting us all up to be sucker punched with some phenomenal music from him. That's the trick to this infamous delay and I'm sure he knows this and everyone in his camp knows this. Questlove knows this.

And in knowing this, I don't believe that brother is gonna come back mediocre in any way, shape, or form. Of course there's def gonna be some extreme trolling after the album drops just because that's what some people like to do to this brother; no matter what he does. This new album (whenever it drops) could very well be the greatest thing since "Sign Of The Times" and some of these same individuals on here that usually have negative things to say about him and they're still gonna go in on him; regardless. But for those that truly loves his music and understand his language (influences and such..), we know what he's about to bring..

So with that said, let's all continue to patient and keep the faith..

Don't talk about it at all and just drop the ish when it's ready. I rocks with Quest, but he needs to chill on the hyperbolized comparisons. Just let it be what it'll be.

I remember reading these post earlier in the year and having the attitude of "I'm done believing,".

I'm really glad to be proved wrong... D came back with a banger!
