"Examples of the official version being worse than the demo/original?"

I downloaded the latest Snoop Dogg mixtape, That's My Work 3, because I generally dig Snoop's music.

The last track on there is listed as "Gangstas Don't Live That Long" featuring Mr. Porter, and I immediately recognized that as being a song previously called "Long Gone". It was originally featured on a Snoop project called Snoop Dogg Presents Unreleased Heatrocks, released through Myspace in 2006.

I say all this to say that they completely ruined the song on the latest mixtape by removing all the funky keyboard work.

2006 version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5eU3sVxlYE

2014 version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDWuQcRgM_Q

What are some other examples of the final, or even latest, version of a song being worse than the demo/original version?

nah Gaga oversang for the vibe of the track. That and when she switched up the lyrics was super corny. Anna Wise fit the track's vibe perfectly, stayed in pocket and kept it chill.

Also two by Ghostface - The Champ and Flowers. I didn't mind the official versions though, except The Champ on Fishscale was so damn loud.

They ended up using the live performance from Chappelle on the album. If I had to guess why, it's because the studio version just sounded bland.

I added the studio version to the album in iTunes and put the live version at the end as a "bonus".

I hated that they did it that way. I didin't think the live version was that good.

Also, never knew that it got an official release...

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

(I think that's what it was called...)

If my memory is correct, a lot of people here (Lesson) were wanting that joint to see some kind of release so ? tried to make it happen... I recall some post from him where he describes finding the Quicksand tape JUST in time to get it on the release. But once it dropped most of us felt like the original demo was better. I think the Homegrown version had the instrumentation redone. I also recall something about Thought not liking how he started his verse on the original.

maybe someone can find that post where ? was talking about it

Totally forgot about those releases...

Thanks for the reminder.

It's a shame that, as music fans in the digital age, it's SO EASY to accumulate so much music that you even forget what you've heard.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

He did say "baby Boy" in the hook because it was a reference track but I edited it out by reversing those words. I also hate the way they mixed the snare in Chrisette's version

When the video came out I actually began to hate him. I hated that stupid video, I hated his stupid outfits (smh at those stupid shades), I wished ill on that stupid girl on the chorus, hated the stupid movie that they were showing stupid clips from. I also hated the fact that I'd heard stupid other songs from dude and they weren't nearly as good.

Dude is really talented but for a long time it just seemed like he was trying too hard to be cool & street. It always seemed to catch up with him too. I remember a few years back where you said you saw him performing and somebody in his crew had a portable tv on their belt. Something else about the show was funny but I forgot what it was. Still lmao

They replaced all the nice keyboard work with a guitar lick which pales in comparison.

Also, the drum roll on the original track sounds like it was live while the one on the 2014 version sounds like a programmed sample.

I also liked the Summer Madness riff in the original track, which is now missing.

But, I think this is just another example of the dumbing down of hip hop production, although the final track isn't as bare as most of the emo-trap sounding tracks you hear nowadays.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

I ain't got time to youtube all of them but I recommend trying to find the ones I speak of below. First one though is Kanye's "Family Business" which I thought was better with the stripped down, traditional piano rather than the glittered up one.

Snoop and Dre - Tha Next Episode
(there's a version that was released years ago that I heard that was 100% different, that was supposed to be on Doggystyle but didn't make it cause of sample clearance issues. 100x better than the one from 1999, which was good but just didn't hit like the first)

Snoop - County Blues
(for the "Dead Man Walking" album they dressed this one up, when it didn't need it. It sounded perfect the way it used to be. I'm not even sure you could find the original anymore but I had the original version on an old computer from the late 90s which was posted up with some other rare gems on www.snoopsdogghouse.com)

Tha Dogg Pound - Every Single Day
(there's a radio version of this song that was released years back that I'm sure a lot of you heard...it was stripped down to just the guitar lick and drums and sounded way better. The version that ended up on another one of those Suge Knight "I wish I still mattered" Death Row albums added this strange distortion sound that was mixed wayyyy too loud, was unnecessary, and took away from the heart of the beat. Song was still dope but that sound was too much)

It went from the 1999 original by King Kirk of Sporty Thievz which was great. He was always the best rapper of the three anyway
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4pnZILvOZo

To a 2nd version that added a verse from the other two members
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOid8NkO8m4

Now a 3rd version from 2013 which is all over the place
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiFIiHp7-kE

I guess they are trying to make a comeback.

Keri Hilson's "Return The Favor" was never a great song but it got significantly worse when they changed the hook and cut out most of its words.

Joe's "More and More" is not as good as R. Kelly's "More and More."

Jay-Z's "Ignorant Shit" with Don Demarco yelling all over it was better than the album version.

The 2004 version of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Love Me" was better than its posthumous release.

Some of the original versions of Marvin Gaye's "In Our Lifetime?" songs were better than the Motown album release and some of the demos from the "Love Man" sessions are better than either of the "In Our Lifetime?" versions.

I disagree with you completely because if the album version isnt cool at all then why did beyonce use and sample the beat for one of her songs. that beat of tick, tick bang on the graffiti bridge record is rad and i have even heard some artists in hip hop try to copy and sample that beat. that beat is hip hop and you should listen again.

Gimme Marsha's "Butterflies" over MJ's, even though MJ killed it too.

Also, R&B songs that were better before the rapper features:

Jonell's "Round & Round" without Method Man
Solange's "Champaignchronicknightcap" without Lil Wayne

OG HOBO tape: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p2AqJrNxbVY

Single/WHORIDAS LP: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=45PeeQtl_to

The differences are subtle. Same song rerecorded and mixed differently.. . I think I just enjoy King San's Voice and delivery on the first. Less echo.. More grit and bass.

The album version is mixed much better but I really like Solomon Childs chorus from the original, Ghost's hook is trash. The one thing that I did find funny is that CH Martin went out of business somewhere between the time of the demo and official version.

I like the original version of this joint (My Soul) when it sounded much rawer and had the scratches up front & the vocals got a bit of echo to them but on the album version (Devil Music) the scratches are in the background and the vocals sound re-recorded.

I wouldn't say the official version is "worse" per se, as it isn't bad at all and definitely sounds more polished than the demo

But there are certain parts of the original version that I prefer, namely the drums hit a little harder (probably cause it was unmixed) and Andre's "do do-doo-do do doooo do" during the bridge

A lot of those songs ad already been out on his mixtapes, and then he polished them up or was forced to change them up, and put them on the albums.

Hey Mama, Family Business, All Falls Down(with the Lauryn sample), the original Through The Wire where he really was rapping through the wire and wrongly said "same hospital where BIG and 2Pac died", the original Jesus Walks was a little different, etc.

the one with the beat used on that "ruthless bastards" song. he always performs that version at his shows. i guess it's "official" to a certain extent cuz it was on the canadian pressing. but the OFFICIAL pfficial version is that keyboard one we've all heard.

Keeping the St. Vincent sample looped throughout the track was dope. And the sudden ending of the album version is wack.
