there's a handful of jams on here, kells can definitely still hang with the current crop of r&b dudes without seeming old or out of place like practically every jay-z related everything since 2005. let's see how this holds up in a couple weeks, but good shit on first listen.

with that being said...

this album is EXCELLENT...best R&B album of the year..kellz hasn't lost a step and this makes up for that mediocre love letter carbon copy he released last year..

minimalist, repetitive...some are dull. But as a whole? He has made plenty of bangers, and he's changed up the whole sound for the West Coast, and it's even spreading to R&B in a good way...because people are taking his template and building on it.

i gotta wonder if R.Kelly listen to one of my old mix tapes?

anyway i believe that earthy fertilizer feeling to make it natural and make it so tender and its so tasty.

if you know how to crunch and munch and carefully floss within its beautiful context then you can't lose.

its a wonderful garden to plant new root and bathe in it.

he's mailing it in....

it's been like that for the last few albums..

lots of cliché .... .... just sounds paint by numbers

dude just sounds like he's on cruise control with his albums now... just putting out something that fits into whatever box he's striving for at the time.....

lip syncing on his live shows...and mailing it in on his albums..

if dude was bringing it, I'd call it that...but from where I sit he's not.

and now her tie in with Simon Cowell on X factor she might have a chance at a career, career after so many years of being a broke Brandy IMO.

She sounds great on that duet. i'm double shocked her voice sounded that good because more often than not she been a cute act with a lite softness.

this was tight.

>What songs do you hear getting played on the radio? And what
>songs are you calling great?

Legs Shaking <---- radio (possibly minus the Luda feature)/great (hints of MJ vocally...i'm diggin' it, lead/background vocals are dope)

Oreo <---- radio (have you heard what they play on the radio these days? why shouldn't they be playing this too?)

You Deserve Better <----- radio (same reasoning)

Genius <---- radio/good to great (prince homage...not that fond of the chorus, but it's jammin')

All The Way <---- radio/great/might be my favorite on the album (a few of these lyrics will need to be edited...lol. honestly, he coulda kept those, but...he's R. Kelly.)

My Story <---- radio (same reasoning as earlier, it's catchy. on second thought, the verses seem to be too long. ehh.)

Spend That <---- tailor made for radio. i don't like it though.

Tear It Up <---- great, guilty pleasure. don't ask me why. i like it. *shrugs* actually, i like the music a lot, but the percussion sets it off for me. the whole song is really choppy, which usually annoys me, but it works for me this time. *re-shrug*

so yeah...that was about 3 songs that i called great, right? it's all subjective.

Most of these songs are going to need some serious editing for radio play. You're right greatness is definitely subjective but just judging it purely against R Kelly's own catalog I don't hear a great song anywhere on this album. The song he did with Lady Gaga is better than anything on this album to me.

nobody has his creativity and vision that is amongest the living under the age of 60, he makes it all look so easy and effortlessly.

he is like Lebron James a triple double and more Jewelry waiting to happen.

i love this album and I talk to the kitty and its a beautiful thing.

you gotta have a conversation with it and also treat it like a perfume and spray it all over you and wear it all year long no matter what season.

R&B thugs can appreciate the sophistication of this album

Gotta say this shit is dope.
People citing "I beat the pussy... Django" as reason why it's not good are
proving they can't contextualize. Number one, these kinds of lyrics are pretty
common in current "urban" music... number two, the song features 2 Chainz
who's known for comedic lines. If you just don't like this kind of music in
the first place, then your opinion on the value of the album carries zero weight.

Kellz once again proves that he can do any style he wants and do it well. I
can't even front on the dude, musically.

And my favorite joints on first listen are:

Legs Shaking (ft Luda) - shit sounds like ratchet MJ, Lady In My Life after the gentlemanly discourse.

Genius - just really like the composition

My Story (ft 2 Chainz) - cookin' like a mufucka to this shit

Lights On - sex music

Kells and many other artists have written better "raunch" records than this. This doesn't feel genuine to me at all. It feels like when MC Hammer went gangsta. Sure that's what was popular at that time but it didn't make what he created good or require any special context to understand that it wasn't any good.

Simply because it's common in so called urban music doesn't make it good. If there is a bad trend in a given genre and someone adds on to that bad trend it doesn't all of a sudden become great.

Writing an entire album that sounds like a Dave Chappelle skit minus the cleverness isn't comedy. It's clear Kells is chasing that Dream/Trey Songz audience and whenever an artist starts to do that the results are usually sub par. It's the difference between Richard Pryor using a lot of profanity and Mike Epps or any of these other less talented comedians using it.

Kellz is largely responsible for this kind of shit happening in R&B in the first
place. Bad comparison.

LOL!!!! These cats' whole style is patterned after Kellz. Kellz is just doing him.

Maybe for the modern era but those of us who recall that music existed before the 90's remember this guy named Prince, P Funk, etc.

No these new songs are definitely pandering to a much younger audience. Kells core audience is over the age of 40 and they definitely aren't "in da club".

Yes, for the modern era. We're talking about that "r&b thug, hood" shit in
r&b. Prince wasn't tryna be no gangsta, lol wtf.

And? It's still his style. You gonna tell him he can't rock with the shit HE
started because he's 46 now? Hell he was getting up there in age when
he started some of this shit in the first place. That doesn't matter. You're
focusing on the wrong thing. This about music... not a morality board.

He's always been a sexual artist that's not the issue. This isn't "Ignition", "Feeling On Yo Booty" or even "I Like The Crotch In You". Those were raunchy, fun, sexual songs. Nothing on this album feels like that. Nothing on this album is as good as those songs. This feels forced, corny and fake and like he is trying to hard to be what he believes is "relevant".

He can rock whatever he wants to rock I'm just giving you my view of how it comes across. In general people don't write the same way at 46 that they do at 26 and they rarely regress which this clearly is compared to his own discography. I am focussing on the music. It's not good. The lyrics aren't good. Put it this way if he came out Black Panties style in the early 90's he wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful as he has been. You can act like this is on par with 12 Play or The R if you want to. I know that it's not and I don't need to make excuses and pretend that it is in the name of keeping it real.

because he's "pandering to a younger audience" and his core audience is
no longer in the club.
Now you're saying these current songs aren't as fun as his previous sexual,
club songs.
That 2nd point is actually a point about the music, so let's focus on that one
and ignore the first one...
I'm not sure how "I Like The Crotch On You" is any more creative or fun than
"Cookie", honestly. I'll give you "Ignition", but even "Feelin On Yo Booty" is
mad straightforward and not much creativity... maybe you mean the way he
sings "boo hoo teeee" or something.
I'd also disagree that it sounds forced. It's one of the things about the album
that kind of amazes me... how natural he sounds doing all this. Yall seem to
be saying that just because he isn't doing what you want him to do, but I
guess there's really no way to prove that either way.

These are weird points you're making. It's actually likely that an album like
Black Panties in the early 90s would have ushered in the current Ratchet&Blues (c)R-Tistic
era even quicker.
However, 12 play fit into the 90s better. Let's switch that and say he came
out with 12 play right now. It would sound like a throwback... especially with
songs like the aforementioned "I Like The Crotch On You", so let's be realistic.

If you don't think having Migos and Future on this record is a pretty blatant attempt to pander to a younger audience I don't know what to tell you. He was on Arsenio talking about how he's been listening to a lot of what's current such as Trey Songz and The Dream which is exactly what the record sounds like to me.

Timing is everything with music and with humor. I like the Crotch sounds and feels more fun to me. You're right there is no way to prove it. I believe he sounds forced and you think he sounds natural, relaxed and amazing.

And your continued misinterpretation of my simple point only reinforces my initial suspicion that you are not grown.

Grown men can have raunchy thoughts... but they usually are able to articulate those thoughts with more creativity than the common knucklehead in the street.

No... I'm sure you're sexuality is fine.

Like it's not possible for a grown man (or woman) to express raw carnal desires without sounding like a reject from the 2 Live Crew circa 1990? R Kelly himself has been able to do that for the majority of his career without coming across like this. There is profanity with a purpose and there is goofiness disguised as "street cred" and this album falls in the latter category. It sounds like an old cat trying to be down. "hey kids you like cussing? You like hearing what a real nigga I am? check this muthafucking shit out you bitchass muthafuckas". He has reduced himself down to the level of DRS, Jaheim and all of those wack ass R&B thugs that imitated his style to some degree and dumbed it down to an even lower level.

Profanity, nastyness, however you want to call it is fine when done the right way. Kells has done this in the past like I mentioned. This is a miss because it sounds like he's being vulgar just for the sake of being vulgar. I think the same thing about Tyler Perry movies on the opposite end of the spectrum. It's "positive" and "uplifting" for the sake of doing that instead of just being good when actually it's a smoking pile of crap.

I was just curious how someone can honestly say that this is a good move for him. I'm not a prude by any stretch of the imagination but this feels forced and fake and that's the opposite of sexy. It reminds me of when we were discussing Keri Hilson's blatant attempt to shock and be sexy and how as fine as she is it made you almost feel sorry for her. Although I'm not a huge Kells fan I don't want to see someone with his talent go out like this.

I can only tell you that on a personal level, it's not a good move for ME to listen to this. It makes me uncomfortable and embarrassed.

It's not something I can listen to with pride in the company of other adults, and it's not a guilty pleasure because I don't even find it pleasurable.

I embrace the fact that I'm getting older and so I'm probably becoming more conservative... but the truth is that I never liked this kind of thing even when I was younger (which is why it's hard for me to get too nostalgic about the 90s even though they're back in vogue)

So... if Kellz is trying to appeal to me and people like me, then it's definitely a bad move.

If (as I suspect) he doesn't give a fuck about me... drive on, brother. Do your thing.

I don't think it's about you getting older...shit he's getting older! To me it feels like watching a middle age dude drive up in a corvette to a 21 and older club and getting out and doing the dougie and yelling "what up my niggas where da bitches at?!?" I don't even believe that Kells talks like this. It's not even really adult content it's just crass and to me there's a difference. I recently went to see NIN and "Closer" is still a great song to me. In fact I don't like Maxwell's version of it that takes out the curse word because it just doesn't feel right somehow.

Well his bread and butter is middle aged Black women and I just don't think they are going to go out and buy this record or be driving around in their cars bumping "Show Me Ya Pussy". That whole skit before "Marry The Pussy" feels so awkward and uncomfortable.

to be so overt with the sexual content..

Marvin Gaye or Prince...they were just as provocative in that way but didn't have to be overt about it all the time..

I think it shows a lack of creativity honestly when you have to be overt rather than subtle...

creativity. nobody is tripping about it and its always been the artist he is. you make it sound like he went from Ben Veren and then turned into Uncle luke or something?

he has always been like this and he has the most open minded fan base of a R&B artist that i have ever seen because not many other bases have fans that can go through the things he has done over the course of his career and with Kellz you never what he is going to say or do next and yet it all makes sense coming from him.

put it like this none of his albums have ever sounded out of character

some of it shows just how crazy talented kellz is. there are some grooves in here, the man has an ear.

some of this I can file under the guilty pleasure category and like most adults it's cool to have some of that in your life.

too much of this just seems juvenile profanity like prelude going so super ghetto over the top. i just can't clap to it.

with this level of talent where is the balance in the album? i mean what barbeque can I play this at?

respect,

it just doesn't have the classic money tracks that 12 play or tp2 got and that is where i deduct. however it flows nicely and it works.

its funny and it has humor. however Double up made me laugh more.

anyway KAP don't trip and breaks his neck to diss on Kellz as much as Warren does and that is a fact.

Warren acts like Kellz moved next door to his crib and played his music all the time.

i ain't got no problem with his lyrical content because he hasn't changed who he is. i mean tell me what has exactly changed in his manner and presentation again?

he been on the real since day one.

He is all we got left. you gonna regret the hate when he is gone. don't say i didn't warn you. that man muscally is like Charlie Chaplin meets Rudy Ray Moore.

Actually, I haven't said anything about Kells' new joint in this post...U so far gone now that you fish for that "hater" line even when I haven't even made a statement....

But I will continue to pull YOUR card...Considering that when those first Black Panties songs were first being leaked YOU said the sound was beneath him....And you said the cursing was not needed...

Now all of a sudden you partying off of "Marry The Pussy"? Okay, dog...Ha!

The one thing that is very clear is you will say anything in support of Kells at this point...I've always given you credit for keeping it real...But now you flip flopping like a mufucka...lol

always running behind me at any costs like i owe you a fur coat to keep you warm as you trick your stories out here.

i like album as a whole, however hearing certain songs by themselves don't leap out as classic kellz standards, however this album is better than tp3,double up(though not as funny)and untitled. nothing is flip flopped turkey because he is the greatest artist we have on the planet. turkey Michael passed him the baton. can ya dig it?

you the one starting at me in this thread. not the other way around.

lets remember that.

Not only that...He criticized some of the early leaks from Black Panties...Said they went too much with the cursing...

Now he's cheerleading "Marry The Pussy"...

The crazy thing is I have NO issue with anyone liking this record...I told my Lesson folks what to expect on this board from Black Panties...Told folks that it was going to make some of his fans blush and that there was some good material on there mixed with some WTF moments....

All I can judge is the past comments of a certain person in this thread...And how it clashes with what said person is doing right now...

R.kelly "W" and the more cats come at me it only shows how domiant and Great his talent is.

again i can like the album on a whole without being blown away by a song or two per se. and that is my point.

Not this tinny fisher price R&B sound. Add in the vocal manipulation and it's clear this wasn't made for anyone over 40. This is a clear example of an older artist trolling for younger listeners... and it's embarrassing.

You're showing a basic lack of respect for the current sound being used in
music. You don't really care about the talent, you're lamenting the fact that
it lacks the band sound you grew up on.

>Add in the vocal
>manipulation and it's clear this wasn't made for anyone over
>40.

So... people aren't adults until they're 40 now? Adult music = over 40 music?
Even still, there was this awesome guy named Roger Troutman who people
over 40 loved. You oughta check him out some time.

>This is a clear example of an older artist trolling for
>younger listeners... and it's embarrassing.

And then there this bullshit. LOL. Why do you insist that he can't simply be
a fan of this sound? Was he trolling 60 yr olds with the throwback stuff?
Was he trolling Celine Dion listeners with the ballads?
Just accept that the man is versatile and this is one of his styles. You don't
have to like all of his faces, but the trolling accusations are unwarranted.

i truly feel when you get this much criticism over him its pure hate because anybody who has followed his career please tell me when he has exactly changed his musical blueprint of using aspects of the past, rolling with the new and then putting his own spin on it?

i mean he has always been a musical Hybrid stew of styles and what is happening and what has happen and used it as one.

Not sure why yall keep bringing up Marvin Gaye when he didn't even exist in
an era where cursing is so common in R&B. Yall niggas gotta be smart enough
to realize how Hip Hop affected R&B. And Prince is from the 70's and doesn't
play well with others or embrace change too tough. Keep ignoring this tho.

as the original part of the title. i got his last album and you can hear him saying the P word before the song ends.

"Savage in the sack" all that came out in 85 and it was rauchy and Marvin Gaye would have been 45 being nasty and wildin so there.

i got the tape. dream of our lifetime. i laughed and it was a wild.

it was the last thing he did and he wanted it out.

In response to Reply # 59

one person can use curse words to refer to something...another can avoid using curse words to refer to the same thing..

R.kelly's lyrics recently often come across as contrived using words that are fitting some sort of pre-determined agenda he has to appeal to a particular demographic..or to reference a period in time when he was viewed as a "creative" songwriter..

it sounds like using words for the sake of using those words ...

like I've said..when dude brings it..I give him props...when he sounds like he's mailing it in...or sounding lazy and uninspired with his music...or lip syncing duets on awards shows..I'ma say that too..

it's no agenda other than giving an honest critique how I see it.

i ain't the only one picking that up. i got much respect for you Warren. we just don't walk down the block when it comes to r.kelly and thats cool.

however marvin gaye was considered vulgar by some as was barry white by some.

lyrics cursed or not the meaning creates a certain mind set.

johnny taylor's disco lady was considered vulgar. major harris love won't let me wait with the moaning in the background.

the term rock and roll is sex. chucl berry was considered vulgar. rick james, prince, ohio players,

bottom line nothing hew under the sun.just worded dofferently. bessie smith was considered vulgar for her day.

I have rarely seen WC say anything about Kells in a personal manner...

Whether he's right or wrong, WC critiques Kells' music and live performance...That's it...

This is the Lesson, Maxx...This is what we have always done...

How is WC being personal?

I mean, considering how obsessively hard you go at a certain artist on this board, it's pretty ironic coming from you...In fact, it's fucking bally, nigga....

the Envy to Kells is what cracks me up because everybody knows that if you take his personal issues out of the mix then nobody is seeing his career that is amongest the living period.

Kellz is like Charlie Chaplin Meets Rudy Ray Moore period.

WC always going in on Kellz like Kellz bought the crib next door and turned the neighborhood out.

you the clarence thomas of this area, more like Buckwheat and a sluper and a wack broke jive turkey.

on the album i said it flows better than the individual songs. I ain't never said it was whats going on, stop putting words in my mouth.

i never went there.

you stay as the field hand and still trying to get to the big house with all teeth.

i don't think the album is 12 play or tp2 level and as a matter of fact i like it better than tp3,double up and untitled, i never said it was 12 play, the blue album, tp2, chocolate facotory, happy people and love letter.

i said it works good for now, however i like the sum of it all better than it has parts. legs shaking, genius, cookie, the duet with Kelly rowland, Marry the P,shut up, are good cuts.

its well produced and arranged and got some good stuff, however not a 5 star classic not even close.

you needs to chill because you don't want to go toe to toe. tired of your fake buckweat tomming self.

i'm talking music and you went personal in here.

Michael Jackson did it now.

and if I go back on film and camera I can find others.

did you ever see that clip where Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson switched roles and lip synched each others part on stage?

you take this all too serious.

56. "The Nearly Perfect New R. Kelly Album (grantland swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

this dude gets it.

http://www.grantland.com/blog/hollywood-prospectus/post/_/id/94149/black-panties-drops-the-nearly-perfect-new-r-kelly-album

Album leaks aren't my thing. I prefer to wait until the scheduled release date, at which time iTunes will tell me my preordered purchase is ready for download. But sometimes being a traditionalist is not possible. When there's water dripping from your ceiling, you've got to get a bucket. R. Kelly's Black Panties isn't due out for another week, but someone forwarded me a link to the leak. So off to fetch a bucket I went. I wish I could say I hate myself for it, that it wasn't worth contravening my commitment to legality. But if listening to Black Panties early is a jailable offense, then lock me up and throw away the key.

This album is a nearly perfect achievement of bluntness, literalism, and indefatigability. It's just what you need after all the cuteness and pandering men are doing right now in popular music. For more than a decade, lust and carnality have been the women's prerogative — Missy Elliott and Khia and Lady Gaga and Rihanna, with Madonna as the living legend and Peaches as high priestess. The men are really boys who are experts in adorability. And after you've listened to good artists sing about luck and heaven and putting on a suit and tie, you've just kind of had it. Justin Timberlake understands sexiness but knows nothing about sex. For Pete's sake, he should be taking the suit and tie off.

R. Kelly has made a career — remember, he's been at it since the early 1990s — out of exposing the lie of popular music. There are no blurred lines for him. He doesn't mind making love. But he really likes to fuck. Kelly knows that if he's going to do a song called "Mirrors," it won't be a metaphor for love or self-obsession or whatever it is that Timberlake is going on about. Kelly's "Mirrors" would include cleaning instructions for the housekeeper and the mirror would be on the ceiling.

Black Panties should just be conceptual kitsch. You can read such song titles as "Legs Shakin'" and "Throw This Money on You" and marvel at the comical concision. But for 18 songs, Kelly manages to transcend the hilarious bluntness of the titles with actual songcraft. On one hand, something like "Crazy Sex" could probably exist on a Tumblr page of unrecorded R. Kelly hits. But one element of Kelly's genius is that he knows he's the purveyor of both outstanding music and alarming camp. He didn't set out to produce the latter, but his music-video opera Trapped in the Closet achieved it regardless. Audiences who had never taken Kelly seriously as a musician — and still don't — found a backhanded reason to adore him. Trapped in the Closet endeared him to people who saw nothing wrong with a little bump and grind because they had never truly seen R. Kelly. Most of those people were hipsters.

But when Kelly releases a record as beautifully sung and produced as 2010's Love Letter, the hipsters are nowhere to be found. Kelly's a joke to them — a locavore pop-up at KFC, a sexual deviant who gave them an uproarious mini-movie. The camp comes from the risk Kelly takes by refusing to be a joke to himself. "Throw Money on You" is just a song — a wonderful, not unfunny R&B song. A song that's amazing not because Kelly is some R&B William Shatner but because he truly does want to throw money on this woman. Whoever she is, her prowess is that fantastic.

You believe in Black Panties because R. Kelly does. He loves, loves, loves having sex. With you. And you. And even you. You're a woman with a vagina, and he adores that. You could be built like Nia Long or built like Mo'Nique — for all the specificity in an R. Kelly song, the woman could be anyone. There's pathology there, for sure. But the music isn't pathological. These are growlingly, mellifluously, purringly sung serenades over mid-tempo, quiet-storm beats. And the woman in his bed — or on his floor, his car hood, or kitchen sink — is neither object nor mere penis receptacle. She is something to live for, something to do, something that, like Kelly himself, needs to be done.

This is how you wind up with a track like "Marry the Pussy." It is not a female metonym. It is a love song to her vagina. He really wants to marry that pussy. It's a conceptual piece, really. It treats him as a woman would. It opens up to him. It feeds him. And in return, he'd like to ask for its hand in marriage. As he puts it, in the spirit of obviousness: "This is a sex proposal." But it's such a heartfelt plea that I found myself at lunch wondering: Will the pussy say yes?

Kelly is 46 now. He occupies an underappreciated place in the R&B/pop firmament, alongside Ronald Isley and pre–car accident Teddy Pendergrass, all sideways descendants of carnal wits like Bo Diddley. Kelly, of course, was the beneficiary of a more permissive climate. You could argue that he helped ease the standard. I was a freshman in college when "Your Body's Callin'" came out in 1994, and I remember my jaw dropping when I heard it. Prince was obscene, but this was different. Prince forged that obscenity in a universe of his own creation. Kelly was subverting a ready-made sound. He was a sex vandal.

He steadily amassed a reputation for unseemliness — marrying a 15-year-old Aaliyah, writing and producing the title track of her first album, Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, settling a statutory-rape lawsuit in 1998. He spent half of the last decade battling a battery of sex-offense charges. He was tried and acquitted. Yet a cloud of perversion hangs over him.

On Black Panties, he sounds as if he has recovered from a serious 2011 throat surgery. But he spends a song addressing the speculation that he's over. It's called "Shut Up," and it's a masterpiece of testimonial self-aggrandizement that needs to be heard to be believed. It begins with the shuffling of papers and culminates with Kelly asking rhetorically, "How many babies been made off me?" and then laying out a timeline of when the conceptions peaked. It's here one has to ask what the difference is between an R. Kelly fertilization and one abetted by, say, Luther Vandross. Kelly's recent duets with the likes of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber point to his cultural relevance. But neither of those songs makes that point with as much lyrical dexterity and churchy affront as "Shut Up."

This is not an album of begging, pleading, and heartbreak. It's an album of assurances and aggression. It's an album of making it rain. And as such, it showcases Kelly's evolution as a freak. The man who once sang "I Like the Crotch on You" just wants to marry the pussy. And the women who once reminded him of his Jeep ("I wanna ride it") now remind him of his Oreos. In the 1990s and the early 2000s, the graphic nature of these songs might have suggested that music had run out of ideas, that "I Wanna Sex You Up" was the end of pop. But Kelly took the frankness of that era and applied to it something direct: stardom. Sexy hits were largely made by groups (Color Me Badd, Jodeci, 112, Blackstreet, Kut Klose). He started in that sort of group (the Public Announcement), but made a career as a solo act. He would sing dirty records, but he wouldn't hide in a quartet or trio. He would croon them right to you, and he would write them ambitiously. He'd be an NC-17 Babyface.

Black Panties isn't as ambitious as, say, 2003's Chocolate Factory or the 33 suites of Trapped in the Closet. But its intensely listenable, endlessly clever frankness suggests R&B still has new places to go, that there is sex R. Kelly somehow hasn't had. What a tonic to hear all the no-no's of commercial radio and polite conversation appear on one album, from a whole interlude in which the n-word is used at the end of every line to the appearance of words like "cum" and "dick." For all the time that R&B spends talking about sex, Black Panties reminds you how rarely R&B concentrates on the sex people actually have: the breathlessness and soreness, the leg shaking, the terminology, the sheer exhaustiveness.

That is the source of the dissonance between the ridiculousness of the titles and the sublimity of the songs. Kelly is having it both ways. He's having it all ways, really. From the front, from the back, from the side, middle, top, and bottom. Kelly has the key to locks you didn't know you had. He says here he wants to make love to you in 50 states. He doesn't specify whether they're emotional states or the united ones. But there's reason to believe he'd accommodate both. The question for me is whether he can accommodate a woman as out-there as he is. Gaga would be a good match. But she's not that kind of freak. Could he handle a Peaches — another, more musically adventurous genius close to his age who shares his sense of lasciviousness and showmanship? She might expose him as tame by comparison.

But Kelly does bring out the excellent in some of his guest stars — Future, Jeezy, Juicy J, and best of all, Ludacris, who now sounds as if he knows how to please you with other parts of his body. This is what R. Kelly does. He elevates your game. You want to be your fittest, your friskiest, your most inspired. By the time "Get Physical" arrives toward the end, it's tempting to say, "Kellz, I get the point. You want to get physical." But the song is so undeniably about having sex again and again that you realize that, after all Kelly has said he wants to do to you, after all the parts of your body he's slapped and licked and rubbed and tongue-Tasered, you've made it through the whole night and he hasn't even pulled your hair yet! So you stay for that. I'm not Kelly's type, and Kelly's not mine (too much baggage). But that's the power of the Black Panties experience. My leg shook, too.

But by reading through this thread I don't think the issue from folks is simply: "This is a bad album because Kells is cursing..."

Oh no, you have to add the rest of the sentence. The criticism is mainly:

"This is a bad album because Kells is cursing and doing a style of music for which
I've neither acquired (nor care to acquire) a taste. He should be doing a
more relic sound to which I can better relate... kinda like the last two albums,
but with a live band so that I wouldn't have anything to complain about this time."

One cat actually brought up "I Like The Crotch On You" as an example of a time
when Kellz was a more creative writer than he is on this album LOL. Niggas aren't
even making sense anymore, because they're complaining without being
honest... because they know honesty would pretty much make them look stupid
and prove the above quotation right.

If you take out the cursing and leave the material I still believe it's one of his worst albums. Not sure how that makes me stuck in the 20th century or whatever stupid fucking response you have to anyone who doesn't think this is a masterpiece.

I would be that Nigga you are talking about and yes I stand by the fact that that song and album will live on a lot longer than this album will. People have given honest opinions on the record and for some unknown reason you aren't able to accept that fact and are coming up with every excuse in the book as to why the world should love this album and if they don't you're either hating, old, a prude or dishonest. Ultimately people and time will decide if this album is as great as you and a few others seem to think it is.

If people just didn't like it, they'd say that instead of going on about his age
and accusing him of "pandering to a younger audience" I'll go more into
why that's silly in a second.

>If you take out the cursing and leave the material I still

You've accused him of catering to a younger audience not only because of
the lyrical content, but because of the musical approach too, so it stands
to reason that you'd say that. How much music do you listen to that's congruent
with this style (shotgun snares, slower bpm, etc). You into Migos? Rich Homie Quan?
Any of this newer stuff?

Nah, it's not for an unknown reason. If people don't like it, they don't like it,
and that's cool. It's when the reasoning is silly... it's like somebody saying
they don't black people... cool. But then they say it's because black people
are unintelligent and prone to thievery... before the silly reasoning, it was
just a preference. Same here. The reasoning behind why people don't get
into this album is exposing more than just a preference. It exposing prejudice
and morality issues. *shrugs*

Expanding on a few things regarding an artist doesn't negate the fact that you don't think the music is good. I think he's pandered in a lot of cases in the past but it's worked. This doesn't work. If people who didn't like the album said only "it's not good", which plenty of people have then most would ask well why. Giving a reason why an album doesn't appeal to you personally isn't silly.

So let me get this straight...in order to truly "get" this record I have to go and listen to Migos or Rich Homie Quan? That says a lot about the quality of this record if that's the case. On his better albums I didn't need to go and listen to anyone because the music spoke for itself. He borrowed from Charlie Wilson or Guy or whoever...I didn't have to go and listen to them to appreciate it. In fact it was probably better if I didn't because then I might prefer the style of the artist he's borrowing from. If I have to go pull out a Chief Keef CD in order to listen to someone who's music I'm very familiar with then that's the epitome of pandering in my opinion. Regardless of how much new stuff I listen to that doesn't make this good. I could listen to all of that and still believe this is not a good R Kelly album.

That is one of the worst analogies I've ever seen in my life. And now this album is exposing prejudice and morality issues if someone doesn't like it? You are really street teaming for this damn record. I certainly hope you get a ton of t-shirts, posters and stickers because you have put in hella work for this shit. I like a lot of music that I know contains lyrics that would be something that a lot of people wouldn't dig. I don't think that is exposing any prejudice or that those people have "morality issues". They just don't get down with lyrics like that. No problem for me. I still enjoy it and understand that it's not for everyone.
I don't feel the need to come up with all of these silly excuses and judgements about people who say they don't like what I like or all of these pointless justifications as to what you need to do to properly assess if you like this album or not.

Had you simply said you don't mind him making music in this style, but you
just don't think it's good... that would have made sense. But people aren't
doing that in here, including you. Yall are calling it garbage b/c he even did this
style. If you hate this style and hate this album, you actually can't judge the
quality of the album, because you lack the musical foundation to do so.
Why do it half-ass just so it's liked by people who don't actually like what you're
going for?
Speaking of which, his age has nothing to do with music... unless he actually
sounded old... which he doesn't.

You're missing my point here. The reason I asked if you listen to any other
music in this style is about acquiring a taste for the music.
If you only liked it when R. Kelly did this sound but didn't like anything else
with this sound, that would mean he failed at it and made a watered down
version of it... but he didn't, he really nailed it.

>That is one of the worst analogies I've ever seen in my life.

Again,
1)you saying he shouldn't sing these songs at 46 = morality issue
2)you writing if off for the style of music chosen = prejudice

The rest of what you said was unnecessary, because neither of those is fabricated.

If he makes something I enjoy I'll say it if he doesn't then I will say that as well. It's really pretty simple. I'm a fan I don't need some credentials to justify why I like something or why I don't like something.

You really can't tell me how I should or shouldn't listen to this or any other music. You dig it. Cool. I'm not asserting that you lack morals or are stupid or anything else. It floats your boat. Goodie for you. I've never understood people's need to justify why someone doesn't like the same thing that they do. If you love it then why do you even care that others don't like it? I don't buy this bullshit that you possess some type of special musical foundation that those who don't like it do not possess.

I'm glad you think he nailed it. Enjoy. I don't need to acquire a taste for the genres he's "borrowing" from to know that it does not appeal to me. I listen. Then listen again. Then again. Not feeling it. Ok I'm done moving on.

I never said he shouldn't sing these songs at 46. I've repeatedly said he can do whatever the fuck he wants to do. I merely said he sounds desperate and like he's following trends and at his age it makes him look like the old guy at the club. That's an opinion not a moral issue.

>2)you writing if off for the style of music chosen =
>prejudice

I wrote it off (after listening to it) because it didn't sound good to me and it also sounded like a marketing ploy. Can I prove it? Of course not. Just my opinion about what I'm hearing and seeing. Prejudging it based on morality would apply if I saw the tracklist and refused to even listen to it or something like that.

Don't listen to country music if you want R&B.
Simple.

See the subject line... also see my previous comment in this discussion.
Discussing why we do and don't like stuff is par for the course on a music
discussion board.

Lol @ special. There's nothing special about it. For instance, if BrooklynWHAT
or Menphyl said it was wack, I wouldn't be able to challenge them the way
I'm challenging you, so it's not only about you not liking it... it's about why
the person is saying it. If you don't listen to rock, you can't go to the rock
convention telling mkfas they're wack. You don't have the ear to do that.

The bigger question beyond "Why do you care if I don't like it?" is
"Why do people feel they can accurately judge ALL art, even when they
haven't acquired a taste for said art?"
Ego.

And here we are, back to this "marketing ploy" stuff again.
So again I ask, was he marketing to 60 yr olds with the throwback stuff?
Was he marketing to Celine Dion fans with his ballads? Is all music just a
"marketing ploy"? What makes this any more of a marketing ploy than anything
else?
And people prejudge based on style of music all the time. Let's not act brand
new here lol.

You've made a ton of assumptions and accusations about people who said that they didn't like the album. Now you're assuming you know my listening habits? Based on what? You don't know me or what I listen to and not one time did I say that I don't listen to R Kelly, modern R&B or any of the what may have influenced this album. I simply do not enjoy the album and it feels forced to me. Neither you or I know for a fact that it is or isn't. That's how it feels and sounds to me.

Based on the fact that you replied "why should I have to?" when asked, pointedly,
if you listened to any of it. I answered your question even tho you deflected mine
with another question... so I guess you're right in saying this isn't much of a discussion, lol.

He can and "should" make whatever kind of record he likes. All I can do is listen to records that *I* like... and this record does not fit that description.

And I'm actually kinda disappointed in you to be talking this "relic" shit, Ashley... or acting like people should be ashamed for not "acquiring the aesthetic" to appreciate this stuff. I'm not mad at anybody for enjoying this... personally I find it to be trash, and for me to appreciate it, I would not have to *acquire* any aesthetic... I would have to LOSE some of my good taste to accept this.

If not wanting to inject a bunch of foul and misogynistic shit into my head makes me "old" or a "relic," then I'll wear that with pride. Because I don't believe all innovation = progress.

That totally makes sense.

Well, it WAS you who brought up artists whose heydays existed 3 & 4 decades
prior to compare amounts of cursing on major label releases. That kinda reeks
of relic, fam.

I'm not sure why you put "acquire the aesthetic" in quotations. I spoke of acquired TASTE,
but anyway,
I'm definitely not saying anyone should be ashamed for not being into any
particular style, but I will say that people need to be ashamed of exactly
why you just did there. You took a swipe at everybody who IS into it. No one's
taste is better or worse for digging what they dig. Why do you exalt youself
above the next man when you don't like something? Maybe the next
man is actually more open-minded than you

And see, I find absolutely nothing wrong with that, and it's a decision I actually
understand. His lyrics are very "in your face" on this album. It's definitely
not for everybody. My beef is mainly with those accusing him of pandering
or insinuating he can't be genuinely feeling what he's doing here.

Where did I exalt myself or take a swipe at anybody who digs this?

I said it's trash, yes. That's my personal opinion. But it's no judgment of anybody who happens to like it. In fact, I explicitly said I'm not mad at anybody who likes it.

Yeah, that's not me in this case... I don't know or care what his intent is in doing this. I just know is that the end result is not something I care to listen to.

It was the "I would have to lose my good taste to like it" statement (loosely quoted)
as if people who like it have worse taste. They may just have broader taste.

For ME, enjoying this would definitely involve some backward steps in my own personal style of appreciating music, and my own personal spirituality.

Anybody else's mileage may vary... I ain't mad at them. And I will not mount a protest calling for this album to be banned.

But I just happen to have absolutely no use for it personally.

(there may be a penis metaphor in that subject line).

i understand everyone's got a horse in the race whenever it comes to Kellz (and maxxx, by default). but goin strictly by the music, it's got a pretty decent soundscape. anyone comparing this to "12 Play" (even Arruh himself does, altho he's been doing that on every subsequent TP-ish release), is kinda missing the point of what "Black Panties" really is. yes, it gets its inspiration from the now mythologised "12 Play", and i guess everyone looks to that album as a touchstone when makin this kinda r&b, but "12 Play" wasn't exactly the filth-laden fuckfest everyone remembers it as. it had heartfelt ballads among the dirtier songs (and as far as dirty went back in 93, there wasn't one simulated female orgasm to be heard on the LP, as was the norm back then, or even simulated ejaculation of the main male artist either). "Bump N Grind" n "You're Body's Calling" don't count as they're not strictly dirty songs, just sex-themed (albeit presented in a not-so-overt way). so if anyone is wanting to make something along the lines of "12 Play", there's more to that album than the obvious sex joints (the "Intermission" of course, too, was a nice acoustic break in the middle of the album). this works towards my overall critique of the Arruh as having abandoned his previous more 'artistic' tendencies in favour of straight-to-the-point no-subtext (or thinly-veiled subtext) MODERN jams. this is the new R. Kelly. it's an attempt to not reinvent, but to reshape and recontextualise the initial steez that made him famous/infamous. and it WORKS (for me).

the songs are much dirtier, there's way more cussing and the sex act itself isn't given any flowery description to hide behind. and i am okay with that. it fits the sounds of the LP, which is a cool synthesis of modern hiphop and r&b tropes (a lot of which Kells helped foster throughout his career). the age of the man himself, means jackshit to me. dude could be singin these tunes 10yrs from now, ppl will respond the same way (either with extreme "unnnh!" or extreme "uggh!"). while i dont agree about his excessive lipsynching during live performances (why does he need to with a voice like his?), it's a small complaint that speaks more to the overall package and has nothing to do with this particular album.

gave it a good 5 listens over a couple of days and i'm pretty pleased with what he's come up with. majority of the joints are catchy, beats bang, Kells in very spry lyrical form. no real complaints to be had within the context of THIS iteration of 'R. Kelly'. dude is a bit of a pendulum in the last decade of his career, swinging from one extreme to the other (from loverman (TP-3) to born-again (U Saved Me) to modern soul crooner (Love Letter/Write Me Back) to absolutely filthy sex freak (Black Panties). clearly he considers himself to be a highly flexible artist (i often have to reminds folks of his duet with Celine Dion 15yrs ago). n when he inhabits a persona, he does it from the window to the wall.

but as per my prev point, at some time in his career he veered away from providing a balance LP (all of his 90s run) and he split his work into independent whole albums of the same thing, less of a mix.

as for the whole argument y'all are having up there about the man's maturity, age and what kind of music he should be putting out for a man of his stature, i'll simply sat that personally speaking, i've found myself getting freakier n hornier the OLDER i get (and also not giving a fuck about it). thats just the regular shmoe. for a dude like Kellz, tho? it's his fucking JOB lol. he's paid to be this guy. so as long as he does it with some entertaining musical results, i could give a shit.

Most sensible critique I've read in here... not because I agree with it either,
but because you actually judged the album for what it is and in the time it's been
released rather than what you thought it should be or wanted it to be within
the confines of years passed.

hearing the songs by themselves some of them I was hit and miss, however the parts as a whole work for the album and it fits him. he is a extremeist and one of those cats that gets bored real fast and wants to prove he can fit that box and this box and because of his talents he can.

he pulls it off with ease and the fact he can still go from one musical tree and still care speaks to his drive and mind set.

His music is much more enjoyable when you can laugh with him instead of
being appalled that he would have so much fun with his talent.

This isn't Lil B where there's just a bunch of noise and no music talent.
Kellz is joking around with alotta these lyrics, but musically the compositions
are on point. This album is cracking me up and making my head nod all at
the same time. That's why I find that Turquoise Jeep comment above so funny.

I guess you can say he has the artistic range to follow up a 60s throwback album with a ratchet soul album complete with 808 booms and trappy triplet hi-hats (how many times does he say "turn up" throughout the album?)

marry the pussy? classic.

same with cookies and some other cool spots on the album.

mistermaxx...how do you justify r. kelly's use of autotune on EVERY song tho?

yknow? like it's just another instrument. he definitely doesn't need the shit, but it's like if he did a country album he's gonna have it sound as country as possible. i think he figures if he's guna make an album like this, he's guna have to use it. but i think we'd all prefer him not to.

R. Kelly’s ‘#AskRKelly’ Twitter Chat Goes Horribly Wrong

Link: http://theboombox.com/r-kelly-askrkelly-twitter-chat-goes-horribly-wrong/

In support of his new ‘Black Panties’ album, R. Kelly kicked off a Twitter Q&A session to interact with his fans today. However, the conversation turned ugly within minutes of its inception.

“Getting ready to answer some of my favorite #AskRKelly questions!! Start tweeting!” the singer shared. Things didn’t go quite as planned as #AskRKelly unexpectedly graduated to a free-for-all for fans and critics.

Fans poked fun at the ‘Cookies’ crooner and his highly-publicized scandals with sex and underage women. “What it feel like to pee on somebody? …im asking for a friend. #AskRKelly,” asked one fan.

Overall, the consensus shows that giving people the freedom to ask Kellz questions went horribly wrong.

Check out some choice questions below.

it's okay to like stuff like this if that's what you're into, but that doesn't mean it's of high quality
there's plenty of horrible music I love listening to, and I certainly wouldn't call pepole 'miserable' because they don't like it

In response to Reply # 202

I'm not sure if that relationship is the same - were the allegations against Mike this detailed? There was never a cot damn video either. Similar result in both parties being found innocent though.

The article appears to state that people willingly forgot the allegations and seem to link R Kelly to just one girl, one video, and Aaliyah - when public records indicate dozens of incidents.

The article paints him as a slumlord villain, trolling high schools for girls and uses his power/money to subterfuge any attempts to come after him.

if we were talking Robert down the street with the music studio in his basement, he'd be villainized, tried, convicted and probably beaten for good measure
but since it's R\Kelly, he's given all the chances in the world to be innocent if it means we can get more coon tunes out of him in the future
even to the degree that he can create a child luring alter ego shortly afterwards and we ride for him still

In response to Reply # 203

is that of the 2 particular situations...the first one...the kid exonorated Mike when he was an adult saying it was all a scheme by the father..

the 2nd case....Mike was found innocent in a court of law..

the victims in Kelly's case say he did it...as to numerous other people involved...

and he was technically not tried for the crimes...he was tried for the tape....

big difference

...how many entertainers throughout the industry's history have been one form of lecherous perv or another? any rock star or visibly famous artist will be privy to all sortsa shit that regular folk don't even think about doing (cos its morally fucked up, or maybe the regular joe wants to do it cos god knows there's plenty of fucked up ppl in the world who AREN'T stars, but don't cos there's less power and money involved & not as easy to get away with it).

Kells has had a LOT of scrutiny on him since jump (with good reasons too). it's been no secret re: his love of the youngens, but as per any entertainer or artist, we either forgive n forget, or we mentally separate the man and his disgusting personal decisions from the character of R. Kelly, the music guy. but even THAT gets put to the test when the man's personal predilections end up being career-defining (his obsession with sex, multiple allusions to underage lovin, pretty much majority of his catalogue post-TP2). does tend to leave a bad taste..in.the..mouth ok i walked right into that one.

i'm still an unflinching Kells fan, cos too much of my early, middle and now late youth has featured his voice and songs in some way, n he's always been a heavy presence in my ears. but MAN is he makin it harder for himself. he appears to be a really fucked up individual, which i personally think speaks more to the environment entertainers are in as well as a bit of a messed up upbringing (wasn't he molested at some stage when he was a kid...?).

i dunno. i'm conflicted over the level of guilt i should be feeling for enjoying any of this man's music. but i level it out by rationalising that if we apply this mode of 'no longer listening to his work BECOS (a, b, c)", then shouldn't we apply it to every single deranged perverted fuck that anyones ever idolised?

(jus thinkn out loud here).
