"What albums must you own on Vinyl?"

I've been considering getting a turntable and starting a vinyl collection.

I can't find a definitive answer regarding the superiority of sound quality with vinyl v. mp3s, but it doesn't matter that much because I'm not looking to replicate my entire library in vinyl.

So I ask: what albums did you HAVE to have on vinyl (as well as on mp3/CD, if that's the case)and why?

Right now I'm thinking mostly jazz and hip-hop for me like:

Kind of Blue
A Love Supreme
Waltz for Debbie
Portrait in Jazz
Getz/Gilberto
Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Low End Theory

And so on...

Well, when it comes to new vinyl.
Obviously LPs can be a bit more expensive, and these days there are some nice limited/box sets/packages/etc. You'll want it.....
But damn if getting into vinyl isn't a fucking blast.
I love it.
I'll come back with a list of vinyl I'm glad I own......

sly stone's "riot" used to sound better, but i haven't heard the
reissues.

i'm undecided on whether i like the "exile on mainstreet" reissue
more than the vinyl. the reissue sounds 'cleaner' but part of what makes
exile awesome is the 'dirtiness' of it all.

"off the wall" and "thriller" are must owns on vinyl,
based on the original cover art and the cool "epic" logo
on the label.

also, wax on "thriller" has a unique look to it...
the groove on "billie jean" looks like no other record groove, ever.
you'll know it when you pick it up. it just looks cool when it's spinning.

same goes for "purple rain," in terms of the label...
the original label for purple rain has dried flowers on it, and it looks awesome.

i'd also say that there are albums you should get on vinyl
because they are formatted in a way that was designed for vinyl.

earth wind and fire's "all 'n all" is tailor made for vinyl,
because side 1 is one of the best sides of music ever put on wax.

same goes for side 2 of "abbey road."

side 2 of "thriller" is perfect.

side 1 of "what's going on" has a setup where each song flows into the other,
and it's an effect you don't get on the CD. side 2 of "what's going on" meanders,
but side 1 is incredible and it works like a mini-album in and of itself.

"songs in the key of life" is great album to own on vinyl
because the entire album is too long to digest in one setting,
but when it's broken down into four 20 minute sides, each side takes on
a personality in itself.

actually, most sprawling double albums are like that... you'll find yourself
gravitiating to your favorite sides.

i'll add on if you want.
that's just my take on must own albums off the top of my head.

I came in to say Exile for that exact reason, it feels like you're in a grungy castle basement, the cd is convenient but I fell in love with that filthy rock ambiance that vinyl just helps enhance. I could even see the argument of having the most beat-up copy of the record and shitty speakers would be an asset for listening.

I honestly believed that Thriller's Side 2 was Side 1.

It wasn't until years later when I purchased the CD that I found out the album actually starts w/"Wanna Be Starting Something"

that Side 2 is possibly one of the greatest ever recorded though

Basically, you get into vinyl for the experience of sitting and listening. And, even though new albums are getting more and more expensive, you can really build up a nice, solid collection by hitting the thrift stores and dollar bins.

even though I really didnt have the money....I had to get the ohio players mr. mean lp since I had heard it on rhapsody especially for the song " the controllers mind"....that electronic vibe with the drum machines sounded so good and I always put the needle on that song when I pull that lp out.

As much as I'm a big hip-hop fan, I hardly ever go looking for rap music cause usually when a store has it, the price is high and they usually have the popular names not the underground stuff; but when I go diggin' I look for jazz (mostly 70's to 80's), underground/prog rock from the 70's, and new-wave rock from the 80's; but it's up to you and what your taste is.

Don't waste your time buying reissues or new recent material on vinyl, go diggin' at your local used vinyl spot and start checking out the names of a few artists you like, but don't pay too much for them I like to stay within the $1 to $5 range.

I always say the best enjoyment out of vinyl I ever had was from artists I never heard of from the $1 bin, found quite a few gems that way.

I have to put up with their Twitter account RTing all the "Grimey's is the best record store EVER" bullshit....all from people who have never bought a record that wasn't shrinkwrapped.

A record store is only as good as its used records. That's a fact.

Luckily they're opening a sister store a couple doors down. Mostly used vinyl plus a coffee shop. Looking forward to checking it out.

I own all of her albums on CD and vinyl.

For me, it's the experience of sitting down and enjoying her music in the house is what makes that worth it.

I have most of the Isley's catalogue (3+3, Live it Up, Go For Your Guns, Showdown, Winner Takes All)

All the 80's Prince albums (Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, Parade, Graffitti Bridge)

Most of Slave's catalogue (Slave, Just a Touch of Love, Hardness of the World, Stone Jam, Showtime)

Most of Minnie Riperton (Perfect Angel, Stay in Love, Minnie, *I need to get Adventures in Paradise*)

Beatles (Rubber Soul, Revolver, Red Album, Blue Album, Abbey Road *I don't really care for Sgt. Peppers or the White Album*)

Bowie (Hunky Dory, Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust, Young Americans, Station to Station, Heroes, Scay Monsters, Let's Dance, Tonight)

Madonna (Madonna, Like a Virgin, True Blue)

I also have most of the Brother's Johnson, LTD, Bar-Kays, Rick James, Hall & Oates, Evelyn Champagne King, and a few Johnny Guitar Watson, Patrice Rushen, Rolling Stones, Bill Withers, GAP Band, Chuck Berry, Coltrane, Miles Davis, Earl Klugh, and alot more)

My newer stuff I just buy my favorites:

Jamiroquai (Syknronized, Dynamite, Rock Dust Light Star *I'd like to have their first 3 albums too on vinyl*)

Outkast (Greatest Hits, ATLiens)

FELT 2: Lisa Bonet

Roots (Illadelph Halflife, Game Theory, How I Got Over)

Tribe (Anthology, Midnight Marauders, Beats, Rhymes and Life)

The Shins (Oh! Inverted World, Wincing the Night Away)

Silversun Pickups (Carnavas, Swoon)

Janelle Monae - ArchAndroid

NAS - Illmatic

Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, Maad city

Common (Resurrection, One Day It'll All Make Sense)

I'm sure I'm forgetting some of those too. I have alot of vinyl. I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's expensive at times, but I look really hard for good deals. I look hard for good vinyl. That's part of the fun of it. Getting a come up when you aren't expecting it is fuckin GREAT. The pointing and clicking and downloading was taking the fun out of it for me. I LOVE my records. I love coming home and getting in my spot and getting some wine and some grub and putting them on and going away.

Also, if anyone has seen or has any Moloko records anywhere I'm a HUGE fan of theirs and Roisin Murphy. Inbox me and let me know.

I just got through organizing and alphabetizing my records last night. This past week I picked up Good Kid, m.A.A.d. city on wax. Before that I copped Marvin's TROUBLE MAN from a record shop in San Diego. My regular place is usually Amoeba Music in Hollywood.

There are plenty of records that I want to get, but will have to patiently collect over the years. I really ant the VOODOO re-issue from D'Angelo- that'll probably be my next purchase.

Sometimes there's an unfair bias against new pressings. Animal Collective and Flying Lotus's new albums sound really rich on vinyl. Sometimes big record companies will do a cheap digital pressing of an album, and it's noticeable (such as with my copy of Back to Black by Amy). Definitely collect older original pressings too, those are my favorite finds.

you'll start off checking for the more known artists and then next thing you know you're fiending for some Hungarian jazz guitarist lp that dropped in '69. That said, if you're a music lover collecting vinyl is a must, you'll discover so many gems and surprises along the way.

Some records I enjoy:

- Donald Byrd (Places and Spaces, Step Into Tomorrow, Street Lady)

- anything Al Green

- anything Bill Withers

- Betty Wright - I Love The Way You Love

- a lot of the CTI/Kudu records

- Ice aka Lafayette Afro Rock Band

- Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay

oh man and just wait until you get into 7". That's a whole other crazy universe right there.

Hahah, exact lp I was referring to! You have it on wax? I finally copped an og a few months back. The artwork alone makes it a must buy. Mizrab has some joints to. I recently got his Wind, Sky, and Diamonds lp which is pretty dope, Gabor is on a psychedelic hippie vibe on it

There was a time when I would make it a goal to have as many albums on vinyl in my "Best Albums Of The Year". I've been making lists since I was in my pre-teens, and by high school it became a challenge because labels were trying to eliminate vinyl, at least in the U.S. If I wanted it that bad, I had to buy the imported pressings. A few titles, such as Me'Shell NdegeOcello's PLANTATION LULLABIES, I wasn't aware there was a 2LP promo pressing until eBay came around.

These days, close to impossible as many of my favorite albums are on CD, or digital file only. That's a sign of the times of course, and format preferences, but when times are better, I went out of my way to get vinyl pressings of everyone I liked and felt a need to invest in that by buying vinyl all the way.

I still believe in the old "vinyl is final" statement, but if it's good or great music, I don't care.
