I don't think either guy has a production credit that predates their 1st rapping appearance. I would omit DJ Quik (as Complex has) for the same reason.
I'd probably put any of those guys over Minnesota though. I always loved his beats but I had no idea that he'd ever laid a verse on ANYTHING.

That still puts his status in the group ahead of his outside production career.

Especially if you're gonna put in "underground" picks like Showbiz or Kid Capri. And you wanted to throw in an underground pleaser, I'd add Godfather Don as well.

Dude had a deal with Tommy Boy as a part of a rap duo. I remember there being a write-up in the Source about the group, and they were hyping his rapping skills, drawing comparisons to Grand Puba.

so he stays on the list because that album predates all the Show & AG stuff.
Madlib has production credits on the 1st Alkaholiks album. That predates "Psyche Move", so he stays as well.
I think you're right about Oddisee though, maybe his image makes people assume he was a producer first.

Both of which predates "Psyche Move." He was on "Turn Tha Party Out" and I'm pretty sure he was on "WLIX."

I remembered about the Showbiz produced Lord Finesse cuts and soon as I hit post.

And honestly, Zone's inclusion as a producer "first" is a little suspect. He had, what, one song on one obscure Preacher Earl 12"? He made his name on "Music For Tu Madre."

puts Madlib on any rapping list unless it's 'Worst Rapper To

Eric B should be above him.

31. "I mean, didn't he produce his first solo album?"
In response to Reply # 30

Actually, no matter if the answer is yes or no, it would disqualify him from the list. If he did, then he gets disqualified for the same reasons as Large Professor or El-P. If he didn't, then he techincally rapped before he ever produced a track.

I don't remember Mannie Fresh being eligible to be a "best" rapper in any category.

Either way, thanks for not having me click through 23 links.
