"COMICS. I just read Saga #54. Any & all comics talk here."

Man. I remember when Invisiblist said 'Fuck You, BKV' about the second to last issue of Y The Last Man.

Sorta had that feeling here. I think I recall buckshot's comment about us being in the presence of greatness was around Saga #4 or 5.

I don't typically love books that are longer than a 12 issue arc, but this is definitely one of the strongest ongoings I've read. Wondering if they do make it back from this, with a year's hiatus planned. This could easily stand as the ending, I think.

Anyhow, other stuff.

Si Spurrier's killing it on all his minis. Enough that I'm tempted to pick up the Dark Crystal series he did. Enough that I'm excited about him working on the new Sandman U books for DC.

Kids have loved Mech Cadet Yu. I think it nails the best of mecha perfectly... but it's still a mecha book.

Haven't been reading any Marvel.
Haven't been reading any DC except for the new Plastic Man written by Gail Simone... she's written some stuff I've loved; first two issues were just okay but I'll stick with it for a but unless it goes really bad.

Been enjoying the new Carey/Gross book Highest House... not quite Unwritten levels of first-arc greatness, but they're obviously back in form for it.

Not sure what I think about this Jeff Lemire book Gideon Falls. I think I've figured out part of what's going on. I've lost some interest in his books in the past, we'll see if this holds on.

Curious about the new Matt Kindt book. I haven't found any of his written-but-not-illustrated stuff nearly as compelling as the books where he's sole creator.

Still digging Wayward.

Still getting East of West but it's not exciting me like that much anymore. Would rather have Hickman wrap this and go back to writing 5- and 6-issue minis.

I hadn't picked up comic books in almost a decade and this comic book shop dude was like, you might like this one.

Blew my motha f'ing mind. Mind you I was having a kid at the moment so the subject matter was on point. I have the trades up to 5 I think. I think I might go back to reading and catch up.

Are you saying it fell off towards the end?

>Are you saying it fell off towards the end?

it's been remarkably, consistently excellent.

The art's always remarkable, but I think part of it is that BKV is an excellent writer, and the brief mini-hiatuses they've taken have allowed them to come back to it fresh.

My only ever real beef with it is that the dialogue was too millenial for old man me, but even there, the characters have grown over time and their language reflects that.

Black Science wore thin on me after 15 or 18 issues. Hard to keep track of who was from which dimension and what was going on. Maybe that was one of the points? I dunno. I just got tired.

Death or Glory, I usually find Remender's fist arcs to be pretty great, but the chili up the ass (among other things) helped nip my interest.

i was SOOO confused by that. i went back and re-read some of it cause i couldn't figure out if i missed something. Was that supposed to be some kind of character development? Do they always do this? If that was some kind of punishment, what would have happened if he said no? Putting it in his mouth or eye seemed like the only other options and those are far better than up the ass.

Also, if you're gonna write the health inspectors as the diversion, why have them just be bribed away? Also it usually takes a day for them to even show up.

i'm still confused.

i'm still somewhat confused at some of the characters. idk if its setting up something more sophisticated or what, but everybody is mad shallow so far.

Also having a bit of an issue with the pacing to but i'll see how that pans out.

Its nice to look at and it feels like its going somewhere, but i'm a lot less hyped than i started.

I haven't read this week's issue of Saga yet but I agree. It's been such a strong series from top to bottom that I wonder if, when & how they'll ever end it.

Mr. Miracle has been a great read but it's also kinda odd. It's weird for me to see him on such shaky ground. But then that's probably what's been making this run so compelling.

The latest Avengers reboot just screams that it's a vehicle for the movies. I get it but I don't have to like it.

Doomsday Clock is so far off the hook from what I expected. It's some really wild shit.

It's way past time for DC to bring back the Legion of Super Heroes.

I feel off quite a bit but Saga was always a must for me. Forget which issue I left off on but sounds like I need to hop back on it quick.

I slowed down quite a bit with what I was collecting. For a minute it was only TWD and Saga, maybe one or two others. Became an expensive hobby but I'm ready to dive back in.

I think it's only the first few issues that are super expensive, so it shouldn't be terrible to get caught up. I think it'll be worth it.

I followed the Walking Dead based on OKP justin scott's incessant recommending of it, got in around #40 and stayed with it through about #90. Got a bit redundant for my tastes.

Even then I took a hiatus on keeping up on weeklies - just check for trades to read on my ipad. Stopped for a while because the movie angle from Marvel was getting too tiresome and the only DC I read was Batman and that was getting tiresome as well.

I have a subscription to comixology's unlimited so I try to read up on things I normally wouldn't buy there.

Just read the latest Saga issue and agree with lonesome - if they really wanted to stop they could with this issue.

so since the publishers still only measure actual sales to determine what series continue, i felt an obligation

but if i don't go there that week, its gone

i started subbing to the ones i like but i'm not going to re-read a floppy
i'm also likely never going to re-read a trade

so it makes no sense for me to buy a physical copy of either, so i'm just switching back over to Comixology. The sales are better and its a lot better at recommending the obscure stuff i like.

I have always respected comic books and as a kid loved the hell out of them. The artwork is just crazy these days and I actually enjoy just perusing that alone when I happen to pass by a store. But as a non collector, I see people that just pick up random copies of like 10 different comics, and always wondered do collectors read them in order? I don't think I would get anything out of buying Blahblah man #87 without having read the previous 86. Especially if you're actually reading them which unless you're an ultra serious collector, I believe the whole process to be a waste. Does the whole movement pretty much think and act alike on this?

are you meaning people who accumulate comics

or people looking to sell? There's no real value in collecting single issues. There's no market for it anymore and you're not gonna get any more than what you paid for a trade unless its actually rare or out of print. If its from a big publisher, its likely never going to go out of print to the point that you can't find it on amazon.

Walking Dead #19 is a good example.

Of course most of the stuff that gains value is the first few issues of a book, so Walking Dead #1 is worth way more than Walking Dead #19.

I'm still made that my cat pissed all over Rachel Rising #1, not worth as much now as when folks thought a TV show was getting made, but still $50-60.

there was an element of luck to that on top of it being an Image book so the run was smaller

by value i just meant worthwhile as an endeavor because the factors leading to the valuation of a single issue is less apparent until months or years later. The gamble is less fruitful than it used to be.

if it's the '90s foil variant years, well, that didn't work out so well.

Waking Dead actually did continue to gain value starting within a year or two of the first issue (2003). Obviously it steamrolled after the TV show got announced,

Comic value's hard to predict, and there are plenty of books I could have bought and didn't (Chew #1, no TV show, pushed hard by Image and I didn't love it anyhow) has gone for $2,000), and lots of others that dotted the i and crossed the t (iZombie, good book, low sales, successful TV show; #1 first print is worth about $6).

but i was mostly thinking the op was confusing someone collecting vs someone genuinely just reading a lot of books and thats generally what most people do with anything. 99% of people are just consuming the content. 1% are collecting and they're likely not grabbing a stack of books at a time.

Right now variant covers play a big deal too.

There are a few single issues that are worth a lot, you just have to be lucky or at least know what to snag. For instance the Death of Superman in the 90s was a huge deal, everyone went out and got that issue. Because this event got news coverage and people who didn't collect went out and picked up copies the thing is worth little to nothing now. All those Spawn #1's? Nothing. The 90s saw kinda a craze on collecting and because the supply was so huge there was no real rarity for some of these books so it became a waste.

I have a rare variant of The Walking Dead where only 500 were made. Since I got this book signed and graded it's worth pretty penny.

I don't collect as much as I used to but I always tried to get a few issues that had a solid writer and artist but limited first run availability. Their value does go up.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you're going to read it before you either stash it or sell it does it matter to you whether you have read the prior issues or not. To you guys point, if the comic isn't a collectors item must it be in numerical order, for you to get enjoyment out of it. For me it's like watching Game of Thrones, season 4 episode 9 after having never watched even one episode. I'd be lost.

yeah its the same thing. if you don't get the first issue or the beginning of the arc (which could be like #34) it can be confusing

thats why they reboot everything all the time. its basically for new readers.

but most long-running books like superhero books operate on story arcs that are usually subsequently collected into trades so they're easy to pick up standalone. sometimes they reference past arcs, but for the most part people follow from issue 1 or volume 1.

15. "I don't know much about how collecting works"
In response to Reply # 11

Justin Scott I mentioned before was a serious collector - kind of guy who has a separate room for his comics. At one point I think he was the owner of the oldest creator-signed comic book in the world. Haven't seen him around these parts in years though.

>I have always respected comic books and as a kid loved the
>hell out of them. The artwork is just crazy these days and I
>actually enjoy just perusing that alone when I happen to pass
>by a store.

Great! Try libraries too - lots of libraries have big graphic sections. How I got started.

>But as a non collector, I see people that just
>pick up random copies of like 10 different comics, and always
>wondered do collectors read them in order?
>I don't think I
>would get anything out of buying Blahblah man #87 without
>having read the previous 86.

They might be buying the books monthly as they come out... so every month they get the 10 titles they're reading - it may look random but they already have 1-86 at home.

Or they may have gotten caught up to the current storyline via library copies or digital reading, and decided they now want to follow a book as it comes out.

As for people who go to shops and scour the back issue bins, that's out of my league.

> Especially if you're actually
>reading them which unless you're an ultra serious collector, I
>believe the whole process to be a waste.

There are single issues that may stand out (and stand alone story-wise) and are worth reading. Especially true with old books where each issue pretty much told one story.

One can certainly find some entertainment value out of reading just one joint. Especially if the art is dope and it's written well. I used to be there when I was a kid, but changed once I got older.

It's getting a little too misanthropic for my tastes, and a couple of the trades have the story spinning its wheels, but I'm still interested.

along with irregular schedule, tough to keep everything straight.

Still reading it but have to remember a lot of stuff I've forgotten each issue and even then I'm never sure I didn't miss something.

I like Hickman a lot but I think he (like most comics) does best with short, tight stories.

Hickman wrote several really good stories in small arcs
Nightly News
Transhuman
Red Mass for Mars
Pax Romana

Secret and Dying & the Dead both came out so irregularly that years passed between issues. Red Wing IIRC took forever for the last issue, and was so confusing it wasn't worth the wait.

Black Monday Murders has been good but seems to have stopped mid-story and without revealing a whole lot of the mystery.

Most of his other, in most cases longer, stuff I read after that, it just seems to lose momentum.
Fantastic Four (great first arc IIRC), but then he lost me
SHIELD (re-read this recently, and it's not great)
I didn't pick up any of his other Marvel stuff after that
Manhattan Projects started great in an insane way and then meandered. Always interesting, but not cohesive and never really ended.
East of West, kinda same same.

both OGNs

Dept. H was okay, I lost interest again after about a dozen issues.
Mind Mgt. was pretty great for the most part, but coulda been shorter/tighter I think. I could use a re-read on that whole thing in a setting and see how it fares that way.

One I mentioned above as next new book is Black Badge:
https://www.boom-studios.com/2018/05/07/eisner-award-nominated-matt-kindt-tyler-jenkins-announce-black-badge/

Man I completely forgot about Grass Kings. I read two or so issues and blah.

Matt Kindt was really anti monthly/floppies so he when started making mind mgmt he wanted to make it "worth" buying the floppies

they are spectacular

rough paper stock with ink and water color art
all the pages look like old files

really nice experience reading those

I liked Huck quite a bit. the tone was much less spiteful and misanthropic than a lot of Millar's other stuff.

Jupiter's Legacy was ok but if not handled well will turn into a CW teen drama.

Sharkey the Bounty Hunter sounds awfully close to myman Si Spurrier's current Vertigo mini, Motherlands.... I mean space bounty hunters aren't all the unusual BUT
