would have to drive 4 hrs and the featured acts were kind of meh. there are definitely some dates where the featured acts are worth it without lauryn but not for me in phoenix. the ticket packages are kind of meh too.

i figured i would wait to see how the tour went before deciding considering her reputation.

if things align right i would want to go to the hollywood or mountain view shows since de la is on there and they seem to have few shows in the states and especially near me.

i hope whatever the issue, that she is able to iron it out and has success with the tour.

that Bristow venue is a huge pavilion about 40 minutes outside DC. She couldn't have sold 1/3 of it. Why would she? It's not like her going out on the road is a novelty - she's been on the road already for years - and her reputation for bailing on shows is Morrissey-esque.

Hell... Frankie Beverly ain't been in the studio in 35 years, but he can come to a city once, sometimes twice a year and sell out. L-Boogie held such an iconic place in most to 35-55 year-old's musical fandom that she could tour theaters and outdoor venues EVERY summer and make $$$$. Just show up on time and put on a decent show.

She's *been* over the machinations of the industry for damn near 20 years. Ever since she started getting sued by Miseducation collaborators for royalties and disappeared from the public eye it's been clear she was done with the music game. So I mean I get it. If she's to be believed and these people were out to get her, then I'd be fed up too.

But eventually, over the course of 20ish years, wouldn't you have to come to terms with your lot in life, realize that you *need* to do this to pay your bills/taxes and support your kids, and have some professional and personal pride ? I mean how effing difficult is it to just ... show up when you tell people you're going to ? What the hell is she doing back there ??? Christ - even if she was like a half hour late instead of 2 damn hours every time out, I imagine folks would probably be willing to give her a pass. Or even if this only happened every once in a while. But EVERY DAMN TIME she does this. There's no reasonable excuse for that.

It's insulting that she keeps pulling this shit. At this point her people should just tell her she is scheduled to get on stage at 8, so when she finally goes on at the actual start time of 10, everyone's happy. Get creative.

Trin I get all that. And I sympathize with having to do something you hate against your will, and the mental anguish that must result from that. But if the only thing "forcing" her to play these gigs is the back taxes she owes then it's a matter of personal pride (showing up on time) as the result of a matter of personal responsibility (not paying taxes). My sympathy for *that* given the context only goes so far, at least to the extent that I'd be willing to give her a pass for fucking over her own fans. Especially considering that the people/fans she's screwing over had and have absolutely nothing to do with her tax situation or her distaste for the music industry.

They haven't recorded any new material since 93, and most of the stuff on their setlists are the classics, rarely do they do a "deep cut".

Lauryn could easy compile a solid two hour setlist off; Miseducation, Unplugged, various b-sides, soundtrack cuts, collabos and Fugees stuff. She could regularly tour off that into infinity if she showed up on time and put on a good show.

Although it's clear she'll never reach that potential or seize that opportunity. The music of that whole early 90's neosoul/alt hip-hop/boho scene was the soundtrack of my 20's and Lauryn was arguably one of the biggest artists of the period.

That's a whole demo of now middle-aged concert goers willing to spend cash on an evening out, who would easily turn her shows into a regular event.

I saw her Austin City Limits last year (or whenever it was) and was like "why the fuck is she butchering and hyper-speeding all these songs? does she resent that people love that album?"

but my brother got us tix for my birthday so of course im gonna go. Budweiser Stage in toronto has 11pm curfew with hefty fines for exceeding. LH has the audacity to come on at ~10:20. Played maybe 40 mins of mostly awful versions of most of the album + Can't Take My Eyes Off of You and closing with with 30 seconds of her take of Drake's Nice For What. No fugees.

It wasn't *all* bad. To Zion was pretty good.

Santigold and Busta opened. That was fun.

The sound for the whole night was SHIT. Absolute SHIT. Sounded like when you're at a festival and another stage's act's sound bleeds to the side of the stage you're at. It was just awful.

I didn't expect much, but I did expect the sound to be decent. The Budweiser Stage (amphitheater ) is generally awesome sound. Seen probably 20 shows there, never complained about sound. I dont think anyone sound checked.

What a let down. But my expectations were low, so I wasn't really let down. But damn...

I saw her in Durham back in 2015 and she was awesome. I had a feeling she was going to do the alternate versions of the song, but I didn't care because of the musicianship they showed and her skills as a bandleader were on display that night. She wasn't late, she rocked for over an hour, and her voice was surprisingly stronger than I expected. I mean, like, I got mad that her voice is this good and she's not sharing this gift with us anymore.

The only songs she did in there original form were the non MOLH songs.

I'm glad I was one of the seemingly few lucky ones who got a great LHill show.

No need to risk it by taking another chance.

if she showed up and had a great performance that would be a bonus

seeing as shes cancelling shows i wouldnt travel for any show she was headlining. if she came to town id get tickets, if its cancelled you get a refund so theres no risk really.

ticket price would have to be like $15 if she was the only act i wanted to see on the show though.

Thanks to the success of - https://youtu.be/U9BwWKXjVaI it's afforded her the ability to chop-off a block of shows, from a grueling tour schedule. Also consider the cancelled shows are all at smaller venues.
What did she lose, nothing, it adds to her mystique and she can always go back to those places to tour later.
I imagine she's just enjoying the summer, before her kids go back to school.

i did afropunk a few years in a row, including the year she was there.
Started nearly an hour late, but she wasnt even the headliner! so after playing (godawful renditions of her songs, like she does these days) for 15 mins, they cut her mic and turned on the lights.
this idiot wouldn't get off the stage - stayed up there singing into a turned off mic while getting booed for another 20 mins before she finally got her ass off the stage so the truly amazing and PROFESSIONAL af Grace Jones could close out the night

My homie used to work for their label, and they were doing an in-store. I was meeting my homegirl for lunch, so I just chilled and shopped the store while she was working.

She called me over and was like "hey, don't you wanna meet the Fugees?" "I'm good, no worries"

Lauren heard us talking and was like "nah, nah, come over here...whats your name?" I told her, and she stopped Pras and Clef as they were walking by. "Ya'll, this is *tullyblanchard*.." I dapped Pras up, Clef gave some sideways Prince hug type of dap. They all signed a picture, and Lauryn signed it

"To *tullyblanchard, next time dont be so shy, L-Boogie (or Lauryn, can't remember)"

Later that night I saw Pras and Clef walk into the I-hop. They saw me, dapped me up, waited for a table for a minute, then bounced.

I was just an observer but these stories are hilarious.

UVA show, I already copped my ticket but my boy prided himself on talking his way into shows. Fugees has a reggae artist in their crew. Big heavy dude but I can’t remember his name. My boy pays him $50 to get 3 or 4 people in because the show is sold out. Dude takes his money and bounces. My boy makes noise and Wtclef comes over and he tells him how dude stole his money. Wyclef makes dude give the money back and they get in for free.

Female from our group at the time is in the dressing room with Lauryn and her crew. Lauryns purse ends up missing and the room gets quiet and everyone looks at my homie... but then Lauryn findable her purse and they act like they weren’t giving my girl the evil eye.

Another dude from my crew how got in free ends up on the elevator with lauryn. Just him and her and he froze. Didn’t say a word. We clowned him for days.

Bahamadia was with The Roots and before the show she was out back chilling and me as another friend were dapping folks up and trying to get numbers and connects. Bahamadia sees my friend and says “oh, you cute, what’s your name?” and more boy is all shaky and barely remembers his name then goes? “What’s your name?” even tho he knew her name already he was just shook as fuck. She laughed and introduced herself.

Man... that was such a dope time because we thought these folks were larger than life but we had access to them and it seemed like all the N.Y. rappers were always in VA soon shows.
