which sounds snobby smarter than what i mean, lol

You’ve got scenes of horrific violence happening in the background; mass murders, prison industrial complex, police brutality.
But Glover and the kids are dancing and entertaining right through it.

Which is kind of in the countries DNA: Romanticizing the Wild West vs Native American massacres. “Land of the Free, Home of the Brave” fight for independence vs slavery. Bringing democracy world wide vs bombing and supporting dictators that help our sphere of influence, etc. God fearing good people who want their guns as powerful and violence causing as possible, etc.

You could probably read deeper with Glover’s bugged eyes, the appropriation of African music. But there’s no more fitting visual treatment for a video called ‘This is America’ having R rated violence along with kids happily dancing around it.

Agree/disagree?

I would never make this connection, cuz to this day I still hold MD talent level in high regard, and am almost never really impressed by anything DG. but when I see DG bout to open as lando calrissian and in general winning across the board, it definitely is a interesting comparison to think about.

And since this post mentions being -playery, might as well get into it

Did Mos just forget to secure the bag, got distracted by pussy/baby mommas/"The life", stars weren't aligned/peaked at the wrong time, or trajectory just went to where it was supposed to go?

The actual DG song/vid gets a TOKPR reply from me, so I'll leave it alone. Hope that all the attention it's getting is making kanye mad tho

He's still doing his Lil Wayne impression since the Freaks and Geeks joint. I don't care that he does it well. Shit was always corny. I prefer his other flows and singing instead. This song knocks tho and I love the change ups.

Fair point and I am torn on this.

One way to massage that factoid is that dude is free enough to marry whoever he fell in love with and not feel the pressure to marry black.

The reading I am more inclined to believe is that a free black person would only want to marry black.

But I then settle on I didn't say brother was completely free, I said the freest.

Who want to be as free artistically or with thought is that he knows when to talk and he knows how to execute. He doesn't get in his own way as much as he doesn't let others get in his way. He knows that difference it seems. So does Pharrell.

My thing with Ye is that theres a bunch of people who are doing the things he feels he is being denied to do for certain reasons whether he feels its because he's black or a rapper or just not qualified (although he has zero self awareness for this, minus the one class he took at Fendi) and these people have the same obstacles and are doing it because they took the time to learn the craft and were humble. Even more importantly they have just executed better.

that means that he was a fashion designer. It's the same mentality almost every girl we have all met at least thrice in our lives who think because they are a stylist that they are a fashion designer. No bitch. You just assemble other peoples designs together well to make an outfit.

Thats like me buying certain side meals at restaurants and putting them on a plate to make 1 complete meal and being like look i'm a chef.

Kanye swears HE does but he couldn’t be further from the truth.

Kanye’s in an industry where if you churn out excellent work you’re shielded from everything(Hi Kellz). Its why he had all those tantrums during his transition to fashion; a world that has the same racial gatekeepers we deal with as black folks every day (“You ain’t got the answers Sway!”) and hit that wall.

Now he’s talking like he’s leaped over that wall into fashion greatness but his biggest coup in that world IS A BLACK DUDE SELLING SNEAKERS! LOL, like that’s never happened before, LOL. He’s back on the plantation.

Glover knows he’s on the plantation but tries to work his way around it. He’s more Chappele/Chris Rock in his views on celebrity and success and what you can and and can’t do. Its why that New Yorker profile of him earlier this year is underrated, like read between the lines:

After watching Matt Damon handle the publicity on their movie “The Martian,” in 2015, he perfected a talk-show-ready geniality. On Jimmy Fallon, he told a tale about being bit on the butt by a dog; on Conan O’Brien, about meeting a sexy coyote; on James Corden, about a seal that popped up beside his surfboard. When I wondered about the authenticity of those anecdotes, he said, “Your job is to be as interesting as possible without actually saying anything.” He grinned. “So, yeah, animal, animal, animal.”

Didn’t black people actually make “Twelve Years a Slave”? “Yeah,” Glover said. “But in the white system.” He picked up a rock from the fire pit, then dropped it and blew on his fingers. “If ‘Atlanta’ was made just for black people, it would be a very different show. But I can’t even begin to tell you how, because blackness is always seen through a lens of whiteness—the lens of what white people can profit from at that moment. That hasn’t changed through slavery and Jim Crow and civil-rights marches and housing laws and ‘We’ll shoot you.’ Whiteness is equally liquid, but you get to decide your narrative.” For the moment, he suggested, white America likes seeing itself through a black lens. “Right now, black is up, and so white America is looking to us to know what’s funny.”

“Chris Rock told me, ‘Man, they wouldn’t have let me make your show back in the day.’ I’m a little better than Chris, because I had Chris to study. And now I am actively looking for the black female to replace me.” Robinson studied him over the flames. “I’m going to die someday, I hope. Then I won’t have all this pain and anguish and pressure.

while purposefully not forgetting his black identity

not sure if i think that makes him free or not. not sure if i think anyone can actually be completely free in a capitalist society.

i think there are always some kind of puppet strings being pulled to maintain what you created.

even while i chase that freedom that i'm not sure actually exists.

Being aware of the puppet strings makes someone "freer" than the person who doesn't acknowledge them?

I could toned down my praise and think it's cool that the brother can do network TV, release music, and dance shirtless and femininely like he don't give AF feels pretty free to me.

I am old and cynical (and invested) in thinking that you have to be able to navigate white spaces in order to have a certain amount of freedom in this country.

"Invested" is an extremely interesting word choice here.
This explains why you defend white people when they aren't even under attack. It also explains why you immediately attack me and anyone else who sincerely analyzes all the ways in which this system negatively impacts us as Black people and is firmly against the system of white supremacy. That frightens you b/c you're *invested* in white supremacy.
Very interesting.

Whoever said I was free? Not me. Try again.

I think you misread that story about that experience with my neighbor (but damn you try to get some mileage out of it).

All White People are racist is one of the earliest lessons I can remember my dad teaching me. So how am I going to be surprised by the racism of any white person?

You don't know me. Which explains why you keep getting basic things about me wrong.

You, on the otherhand, keep fitting nicely into that box I see you in. Mad predictable bro.

You just hate how right I am about you. Contradicting yourself is your idea of being unpredictable. It just makes you a hypocrite who changes your views based on who you don't like. You're terrified of living without the comfort of white supremacy, since you're invested LOL. That's why you go hard at anyone vehemently against it. Yeah you're very transparent.

>Being aware of the puppet strings makes someone "freer" than
>the person who doesn't acknowledge them?

i think it goes both ways. i think some will feel freer because they can manipulate them while others will feel enslaved due to the constriction of them.

>I could toned down my praise and think it's cool that the
>brother can do network TV, release music, and dance shirtless
>and femininely like he don't give AF feels pretty free to me.

i can see that. but with him who knows what compromises he's had to make to get the access he has. i think he spoke about how Atlanta would be different if not for the gatekeepers in that GQ article.

>I am old and cynical (and invested) in thinking that you have
>to be able to navigate white spaces in order to have a certain
>amount of freedom in this country.

i feel you. i honestly can't think of anyone who has attained extreme financial success that hasn't had to maneuver through white spaces to attain it. if not them, then someone on their team. it's the reality we live in. the power structure in this country is so overwhelming white that i can't think of any path to completely circumvent it.

do i think it has to stay that way? nope. but that gets into the black wealth talk and building our own systems. not sure if that is something we'll see fully realized in our generation. but looking at VCs like Arlan Hamilton with Backstage Capital building funds with the sole purpose in investing in black founders gives me hope that its closer than most think.

plus with all the athletes & musicians dipping their toes into Silicon Valley ventures it feels like we are at the beginning stages of breaking through that good ole boys club.

125. ""all white ppl are racist" vs "freedom is navigating white spaces""
In response to Reply # 110

The above statements are irreconcilable. Racism is the subjugation of non-white people, especially Black people. The very nature of it is to restrain. If one's definition of freedom is being able to appease their abuser, that is indeed very sad. Why is it sad? Because one has to stop viewing the subjugation as subjugation in order to view that as freedom. In essence, in order to feel "free" in a system of white supremacy, you have to see yourself and the world exactly as white supremacists do. That's just called being broken.

>please help me understand how you all are able to navigate
>this world without dealing with and maneuvering through the
>white power structure at some point?

No one said they don't have to deal with it. We all have to deal with it to some degree, and that is precisely why none of us are free. You omitted the part about freedom when asking this question.

references:
(1)"All white people are racist" is from reply 95
(2) Notice I said "in order to feel 'free' in a system of white supremacy, you have to see yourself and the world exactly as white supremacists do." That makes reply 96 very ironic ("Freedom is doing exactly what I think you should do" LOLOLOL"). This is sad on a whole different level, because he can see Black people boxing Black people in with mere disapproval, but simultaneously defines "freedom" as fitting into white peoples' box. He exempts those "racist" white people from criticism here. Black people get all of his criticism in this instance, because we aren't the granters of "freedom" in a racist society. Power is determining the direction of his criticism... those with the least power get the criticism b/c they can't do anything for him in his eyes except fall in line with the (racist) system in which he's invested.

I loved the post someone else made about Mos Def and if DG is occupying a space where MD could've been. A whole different conversation but a fair comparison.

This is a great song. Glover is great because his portfolio is deep and wide.

from a trump subreddit:

"I thought it was awesome. But I also love Donald Glover.

I have seen many takes on this video. It is very open ended. It seems to me to be, and I am saying this mainly because Kanye shouted him out, that this is a commentary on Black America.

It feels like it is talking about how black America is lying to itself about reality. Highlights gun violence, black on black crime, drug use, church, rioting, police and the degenerate rap culture that doesn't talk about the state of black America. Everyone in the video is black, which is why I don't buy the racism narrative. He is a black guy, and he is the one that shoots the church people and the unarmed guy. He is the one smoking the joint. He is the one dancing and pretending like everything is fine. There is rioting around, cars on fire, people jumping off roofs, but he is dancing, pretending like everything is fine. Then at the end, after all of it, he is running from white people, signalling that even after all the shit that happens, at the end of the day they blame it on white people.

Idk, maybe this is hopeful. It could be yet another "America is so racist" video."

uh.....sure thing Robert, you really understood the video

That's what I told my wife yesterday.
Black people cant criticize white people in any way that'll cause them to introspect or even genuflect.
So making black art with the white gaze in mind seems ... tiring.

from his song 1985

"See, I've been on a quest for the next wave
But never mind, that was just a segue
I must say, by your songs I'm unimpressed, hey
But I love to see a Black man get paid
And plus, you havin' fun and I respect that
But have you ever thought about your impact?
These white kids love that you don't give a fuck
'Cause that's exactly what's expected when your skin black
They wanna see you dab, they wanna see you pop a pill
They wanna see you tatted from your face to your heels
And somewhere deep down, fuck it, I gotta keep it real
They wanna be black and think your song is how it feels
So when you turn up, you see them turnin' up too
You hit the next city, collect your money when it's due
You gettin' that paper, swimmin' in bitches, I don't blame you
You ain't thinkin' 'bout the people that's lookin' like me and you
True, you got better shit to do
You coulda bought a crib with all that bread that you done blew
I know you think this type of revenue is never endin'
But I wanna take a minute just to tell you that ain't true
One day, them kids that's listening gon' grow up
And get too old for that shit that made you blow up
Now your show's lookin' light cause they don't show up
Which unfortunately means the money slow up"

Instead, we have to do one of the following, tear it down, compare, reject, rebut, rebuke, classify, marginalize, question validity, shoot the artist, etc.

How about, just admitting that the video and the artist are both dope and show some dang appreciation for the culture of Black!

1 (cont'd). Completely don't get the "artistry" in a 34yo dude making teenager music. Terrible beat, lyrics and song overall.

2. Video is visually unappealing. Again, it's some dude dancing around shirtless with guns, with other people dancing in the background. About as interesting as watching a Puffy video.

3A. We've also hit a point where the bar is so low that anything "non-streets" counts as deep, pro-black masterful artwork now.

3B. Shit just isn't deep for anyone that's been paying attention the past few decades. It's deep for people that have been asleep and are just now opening their eyes.

4. Bonus: Dude "ironically" does all the shit that (I guess) he's against, like wack-ass trap music, shooting niggas, screaming bars shirtless, etc. "Ironically." Right.

Like when the Cardi B album came out we was like, "That's Dope!" and that was pretty much the discussion. "Thought Provoking" by it's very description means analyzing and critiquing.

no one went in on it IMO.

Some folks were like "nah, this shit wack" but most folks like it and a few didn't understand it or think it was genius levels.

you trying too hard to make it more than it is.

Admitting? Huh? "Dope" is subjective.

My views on this video aside...
Everything with Black faces isn't positive for Black people, so we'd have to be fools to appreciate stuff solely on that basis. We can't afford to be that stupid.

Convo I had with a homegirl who was actually at NYU at the same time as DG:

https://ibb.co/eGWMqd

I didn't think too much of it but then I watched this turrible Wyatt Cynac movie this weekend

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4848010/

And I don't know if it was because of that convo but it stood out to me that there was not a single black woman in the entire movie.

Anyway, I don't agree with homegirl but there is a kernal of something there. My writing partner at some point pointed out to me that somehow I manage to work my wife into everything I write which I wasn't even aware I was doing. Oh well.

You kiss white ass you will get ahead in this game

You show up with a white SO and you will be seen as someone they can “trust” with their money.

but Black women do it too. 2 Dope Girls and countless artist have used white ken to get shreds in this game while selling Blackness.

If you listen to his albums in chronological order, there's a marked difference in tone and themes. His first album 'Camp' contains a lot of whining about being too white for black people, not being accepted for wearing cut-off shorts, black people thinking he was gay, etc., which resembles the Donald Glover your friend described. But a lot of that fell away with his subsequent records, and isn't reflected in his other work. 'Atlanta' and "This is America" don't feel like they came from the same person who made 'Camp.'

says a lot of dumb thing you can count on young smart people to say.

Like all of the jokes that dude from this article says should be the basis for not supporting donald glover are all jokes he made in his early twenties and I am pretty sure I have made amongst friends at some point or another at that age:

http://affinitymagazine.us/2016/11/09/why-you-shouldnt-be-supporting-atlanta-or-donald-glover/

I was one of the people shocked he was capable of making ATL. But dude has put in the work as he has gotten older and seems to be coming from a solid place right now.

I am just so glad I wasn't able to have a youtube channel or blog when I was younger. I read shit I wrote here a decade ago and cringe. I am surprised my early 2000s KILF joke here never got archived.

it reeks of the whole "Obama being a long-eared piss colored interloper" (hi, Bin!) discussion, which also was wild corny.

though I'm about to buy a book that explores that in detail, sooooo....

I dunno about this Wyatt Cenac movie though. I mean, OK... but that's on who wrote/directed that film -- looks like a white woman (Laura Terruso), not really him (the actor). so I can't blame him for that.

besides Cenac was in Okayplayer: The Movie (Medicine for Melancholy, directed by Barry Jenkins Da God)

with black man and non-black wife that the sisters will support. Not to mad at them.

The Wyatt Cynac movie was hard to watch on Amazon Prime this weekend because he was the fuck up non-bread winner with his super successful Asian wife and that carried all sorts of undertones that there white woman director & writer didn't take into consideration IMHOP.

I really really really want Wyatt's career to go somewhere. I think he took some steps that made it quiet for him. I'm thinking this because I remember being at the first 2 Dope Queens show in BK which was spun off from Wyatt's comedy night. They are killing it but hes been not making much noise.

I just have a hard time seeing him crossing over and by crossing over I mean into making black people laugh.

Everytime I see him I just want him to cut that beard.

That Littlefield show is just up the street from my house and I've only been interested in going once.

He made it to 1:33, lol.

Then we had a 30 minute conversation about the video, so it sparked some thoughts and questions. A lot of laughs, too.

I'm somewhat offended by this video now based on how I'm interpreting it now (I've seen the whole thing).
