Guess now is as good a time as any though...

Short version:
Crisco has a high success rate and proven record of obtaining happiness and providing happiness to females that are on the "fringe" of common standards of beauty and have self image issues. He has developed a very precise lane as a result of years of controlled testing. A very long proof if you will.

I love my wife, I love my kid

but since I've been married I have been dealing with a lot of anxiety.

I married late in life which was a good decision but that also means that I spent a LOT of time alone before being married, so now that I have a co-pilot who is really really driven (I'm driven as well but I have a different approach) I'm having a hard time dealing with the fact that my life is not exactly my own anymore and I have to deal with the reality that I shoulder the worries and concerns and dreams of another person.

I often think about my old life and how easier it all was but then I realize that my life has gotten 1000% richer because of my wife and child. I also realize that even though I had a lot of shit figured out as a single person I was not exactly living right.

No matter where you go, there you are.

lives in LA and makes good money in the industry but he called me up to tell me he is downsizing and living humble for a minute to get shit in order.

I just listened and gave words of encouragement.

For years I know he has kinda chuckled at some of the moves I made since getting married but I think now that he is in it he see's what you are seeing.

It's no longer you, or me..

This Is Us!!

I also think as soon as you get married life immediately throws you a curve ball. Back when I was single, shit seemed so easy. Everything fell into place.

Family can be the greatest source of joy in the world, but it is also the greatest source of anxiety. I know have to think about stuff like , "wow I can be at work and my kid walks into the street and is taken from me just like that".

In response to Reply # 7

shit aint funny now
and thats not to say marriage is bad
but it is a house of cards that needs to be blocked from anything that could teeter it over

for example...im fourth on the depth chart right now

1)Work
2) Kids
3) School
4) Me

now at first when that depth chart came to me...i was pissed
but then i had to review my own depth chart from 10 years ago

1) Work
2) School
3) Tutoring
4) Her

But I was first to her at that time
which caused some issues
i got another job and we put each other first for some years
kids came...shit switches

the work comes when those dynamics change

In response to Reply # 7

and the topic of the M word has come up...i got alot of love for the gal but i love my free time (read:peace and quiet time) SO MUCH. plus although ive never been married ive been in a few LTRs and i know how much work they were, so i can only imagine how much work actually being married must be. do i want to work that hard? SHOULD i want to work that hard? lol. she and i had this same convo the other day almost verbatim regarding how much work relationships take...i dont think she was tryna see my stance too tuff.

i told her the prospect of growing old alone was never a fear of mine (im 46) and that im not anti marriage, but ive never really stressed it either...like if it happens it happens, if not then not(not in regards to her but just in general).

but i guess the question is, how hard should you (have to) work in order to exist with someone ELSE? its a strange prospect to ponder. at what point does it become another job? and i love my girl dearly, but all i ever heard growing up (my parents were together 44 years until my pops passed few years ago) from my parents and fam and just in general from ppl is how much work marriage is. it makes me nervous lol.

15. "It was my pops birthday yesterday. "
In response to Reply # 0

He is sick with dementia but I posted about his birthday on facebook and some moving stuff came in. A couple of highlights from people from the community:

"Happy birthday to the greatest man I know. It wasn’t your responsibility, but you’ve been the closest thing to a father I’ve had. As a teenager, I remember us having so many disagreements because of the difference in our age. But for every argument, we had twice as many times where we would laugh and talk nonsense. At times, I reflect on your condition and realize how unfair life is. You stepped into my life at a point where I needed you the most. Although you may have forgotten a few things, I’ll hold onto the memories forever. You taught me to be a man, and for that, I’ll be forever grateful."

"Happy birthday to Mr. P! A great motivator for Buddy and his friends. As a child, we appreciated all of the pizza parties, bball games at the crib, sleepovers and motivational discussions about progress! Loved every minute of it! Growing up in XXX County!!!"

"Happy birthday to the man who was THE FIRST to tell me (along with his wife) that I would be "perfect for Howard University" after seeing me perform in a piano recital in high school. Happy birthday to the man who, after I enrolled at Howard, directed me to a funding source so I could stay enrolled there. Happy birthday to the man who let me into his office on numerous occasions to send and receive faxes for auditions and other stuff. Thanks Mr. XXXX for your help, your concern and your support. Enjoy your day"

Man I was choked up reading this stuff. Great to hear while they still alive.

like fluidj said...that's the type of impact i'm trying to have in this world.

my grandmother was diagnosed with alzheimer's right when i started high school and moved in with us.

i saw the tole that the care took on my parents...even if you are not the primary caregiver please do make sure you take care of yourself mentally and physically.

it can be a heavy weight to bear.

happy belated birthday to your pops.

the key to happiness is not being rich;
it's doing something arduous and
creating something of value and then
being able to reflect on the fruits of your labor

It was already ruined after college, and then a few years later I messed it up even further when I was unemployed. But once I got back to work, I cut up my credit cards, and kept the bills to a minimum. I only have and emergency credit card, and one store card that I pay off in full right after I use it. Zero balance. They hate me, LOL. I've been living like that for about 10 years. If I can't pay cash for it? I leave it alone.

When I had to re-up for a car, they ran a report, and I got approved at a GREAT rate. I was surprised.

that high ass APR makes it much harder to pay shit off and makes it easier for folks to default on car loans.

also, just heard the GOP passed a law making it EASIER for car dealerships to hike up APR's which is usually done to minorities even when white folks have the same credit score.

26. "solo = isolation?"
In response to Reply # 0

I'm pretty much fed up with a lot of my friends these days. Not necessarily in a "bad" way, but I'm tired of being the guy who always makes group plans, the guy who picks up the person with no car, and the first one on time, etc. I've been noticing a few of 'em take my friendship for granted. For example, a friend of mine suggested we go out to eat (technically not an invite; more of an i'm-hungry-too). When we got there (after the whole 'who's driving?' bullshit) her pockets were light. Not a big deal, but she just *assumed* I had her covered. Now at the time I didn't really sweat it. But the more I thought about it, that's kinda selfish of someone who's supposed to be a friend. Bottom line, i've kept her at a distance since then.

The last few times I asked friends to help me out on a non-paid project I've been working on, only a couple (actually ONE) have helped me. Most have ignored multiple requests, or played dumb. Cool. I stopped asking.

I'm done with most of em. No hard feelings, I just tend to do more stuff by myself these days. My only worry is that the more I cut them off, the more isolated I've become, which kinda messes with my head. Am I overreacting? Am *I* being a bad friend? Etc.

I just booked an overseas trip and for the first time I'm traveling internationally alone. It feels good, but at the same time I wish I had better peeps in my life.

like if you're distancing yourself from them anyway, you might as well have a candid conversation with them and let them know how you've been experiencing your friendship with them

Well, to be honest, I'm pretty sure it would turn into fingerpointing and bad blood. I'm not 'avoiding them' per se. I just don't make a lot of plans with them anymore.

and that's exactly what would happen. So rather than have a falling out, I'll just keep doing my thing until we all have a good reason to be in the same place.

Ennh. For the person I mentioned above, it might be too far gone. She won't change. That's the hard part. She's got a good heart, but she's selfish, and oblivious when it comes to her own shortcomings.

I've been playing the keys heavy recently, trying to catch up on my music theory. NOT ONE of my friends plays an instrument. Cool, but that means more alone time for me. Same with the bicycles and motorcycles, jogs/hikes through the woods, gardening, etc.

Maybe try to find some common ground? The only friends I really still hang with are guys that I can do some activity with.

It's not that I don't *want* to run with my peeps. It's just a hassle getting them to do anything other than drinking at clubs. They don't meet anybody halfway when it comes to stepping out of their comfort zone.

Most would do more than that. I'm at the point now where I'm leaving on the exact day I can. I've literally put my life on the line for everyone and it feels like its no appreciation. Watched a few of my buddies lose it from ptsd now I'm always feeling pushed to the edge. Been doing small shit to counter some things but man, this ain't easy.

5 more to go!

But is starbucks the only employer in the country with racist employees?

I guess I wonder how this story became so much about Starbuck and not the police.

If I have an employee who does something racist or otherwised fucked up, I would free them, apologize and try to make it right with the victim and do something to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Starbucks appears to have done all that, what more do you want from them?

The cops have done none of these things and y'all are giving them a pass?

Again, you all have it all wrong if you think the cops had to arrest these guys OR even kick them out of the shop just because the woman says so. The cops are not Starbucks private security force and shouldn't enforce discriminatory practice in violation of civil rights laws.

Starbucks didn't call the police; a racist white woman did

the cops could have also just asked the men to leave and not taken them into custody...especially if they'd asked the other patrons around them what happened

when a situation isn't charged, which it clearly wasn't, i feel like the police should play a different role..not just to be robots who arrest whoever some store manager tells them to arrest

that gives her more power than their actual training. that doens't sit well with me

i should not be able to direct cops to arrest people in a non-charged situation. i want them to ask questions first.

From what I read they gave the men an option to leave and they refused.

While I have no love for police this is an incident where I think they weren’t in the wrong given how the call transpired. Now if they weren’t given the option to leave once the cops arrived then sure, I would place some blame on them but the majority of on the manager who amplified the situation.

any black people in my store, please ask all the black people to leave.

We know the cops can't carry that out. That's the extreme example.

In this instance the cops should have spent a little time asking, "well why do you want them to leave when other people are here and not buying stuff?"

It would have been annoying and harrassing if they went over and asked the brothers what they were doing there. But when the brothers said we are waiting for someone and we will buy coffee when they get there, that should have been enough for the cops to go back and talk to the owner or otherwise descalate the situation.

You talking about me giving starbucks a pass but I can't understand why you want to give the cops a pass when we KNOW they have a systematic history of racist abuse of their authority.

now why would cops play detective and go around asking for other peoples receipts?

like I said earlier. Police aren't the BBB. They aren't there to check receipts and talk to every customer to see who paid and who didn't.

They were called to remove 2 dudes and gave them the option of leaving voluntarily. They refused. The fuck else cops going to do? At that point it is trespassing since the manager wanted them gone.

There are way too many other incidents with cops where we can shit on them. This isn't one of them IMO.

What? That's silly. Not play detective. Just do their jobs and be cops. And start by asking the Manager why does she want the two men removed?

Is it really that hard?

If the cops have done there job as peacekeepers and spent a little time talking to the manager as to why she wants them to remove. Likely, her reasoning will crumble and it all could have been resolved.

I've got a ton of law enforcement in my family and they will tell you that they spend most of their time talking to people and trying to resolve disputes in real time (i.e., peacekeepers). That's the biggest change you have seen in cops lately. Back in the day you call the cops on a domestic dispute and they go there and talk people down. These days it seems like they go in guns blazing because they so bitchmade.

You are of the opinion that she can have them removed for any reason at all and that's not the law. She can't have them removed just because they are black.

second, while she can't have them removed for ANY reason she gave them a reason. They didn't buy anything and refused to leave when asked.

third, they asked the dudes to leave and they refused.

now, maybe I'm wrong but if you give people the option to leave or get cuffed and they refuse.. that's trespassing by law right?

cops jobs are to de-escalate the situation peacefully and IMO they did just that.

Ain't no cop playing detective in a Starbucks when folks refuse to buy something and the manager calls the cops on them. No guns were drawn, no threats were made.

I'm mad I'm defending cops and shit but damn, this was the most peaceful handcuffing of 2 Black men I ever seen and folks trying to make it seem like they were bloodied and bashed.

expectations of how the cops are suppose to treat people. The rest you said I responded to before, the manager has no right to ask them to leave because they are black. She has no right to treat them differently because they are black. The cops don't have to cuff them up and remove them simply because she said so.

I don't think it's that hard to understand.

Because a simple Microagression by a racist fuck in charge of a Starbucks could've had a FAR worse outcome. Imagine if those two brothers hadn't been as peaceful.

We've seen a guy get killed for selling loose cigarettes and another for selling CD's. We would've added "Waiting for a friend at Starbucks" to that fucked up list.

I've been arrested under a similar stance. some lady said me and my boy tried to rob her. cops game and said they had to arrest us because of the complaint.

dudes chose the cuffs.

bot sure what else they could do once called to remove folks from a business.

they didn't mace them, taze them, rough them up or anything so I can't see how they made the situation worse under the circumstances.

It's like you're just reading right through that point that keeps being made.

No reason.

Just because the manager called them to have them removed is not a reason to ask them to leave.

The manager is a fucked up ass person, nobody is arguing that.

That's what ol racist barista wanted. She got the cops to enforce her racism. That's *why* she called the cops. She knew they'd cuff them up and sort it out later. It reads like this.

"I don't want them in my store. I'm a white lady who can call the cops and have them removed, and nobody will question my motives."

THAT'S what's fucked up about it.

My homey blames it on my college ball playing days. I graduated in '99, haven't played much full-court since '05 and it just started hurting out of the blue a few months ago. I just turned 40, too.

Coincidence or correlation?

I don't know much about Starbucks at all. I'm sure if we decided to dig deep enough, we'd find several things about them that we don't like and we want to rally against.

In this instance, I'm fine with boycotting them. I don't particularly care either way. But to the company's defense, they've reacted the way they should when the media glare is on you for something like this.

The individual (and anyone on their staff) who tried to force these 2 men out and called the cops on them is the real villain.

P.S. I don't drink coffee. At all.

You can't control people's actions...
but you CAN control how much ammo they have to oppress you in some instances.
The barrier for entry was a $2.60 coffee...
Hell...the barrier for entry might not have even been that...just say you're going to make a purchase after you relieve yourself. Who the hell buys coffee and takes it into the bathroom??
I don't fck with Starbucks like that anyway because their coffee is generally lackluster... but living in an urban area...i'm well aware that most establishments have a 'Bathroom is for paying Customers Only' policy and I move accordingly.

at hat point, they're paying $2.60 to assimilate. How much do black ppl have to 'modify' their behavior to not be seen as 'suspect?

how many times have you:

taken your hat off?
taken your hoodie off?
walked around the store carrying merchandise in a visible manner?
toned your voice down?
pulled your pants up?
removed your doo-rag?

just to make someone ELSE 'comfortable' with YOUR blackness? I look at all the 'micro-assimilating' I've PERSONALLY done over the course of my life and it makes me sick...cause nxggas still gettin shot for NOTHING.

so yeah...fuck paying $2.60 for some coffee. I gotta pee, and you just let Kevin, Matthew and Brad in without the code.

you don't have to buy anything when you go. you can chill there and supposedly not be bothered.

buying something is for the bathroom access. watching their interview on GMA, he asked for the bathroom. then she hit him with the policy and he goes to sit down, without saying much.

2 minutes later, she's calling the cops. they didn't even have time to sit and wait for the 3rd guy.

i don't take everything at face value. i THINK and analyze.

boycott starbucks is knee jerk and in this instance, i don't think its the right response

already, the CEO had gone way farther than almost any other corporation in response to this and there isn't much more he can do. He personally apologized, took responsibility, committed to closing for retraining and is giving the two men a seat at the table to improve company operations. Like what more do we want from Starbucks right now?

if Starbucks completely collapses as a business, that doesn't address the real issues:

racist white people with power and over-policing of black people.

boycotting Starbucks is a non-starter

It could've just as easily been a McDonald's, Subway, or whatever. The fact that it occurred at Starbucks is an aside. This was just an evil bitch trying to assert whatever little bit of power she had.

Starbucks is taking the fall for having an ignorant person on the payroll.

The market here is fucking stupid. Everything is a multiple offer bidding war way over asking price. Almost got a place I really liked last weekend and lost out because of the smallest dumbest shit. The whole process is fucking stressful and time intensive. It's like trying to buy something on eBay. Just give me the Buy It Now option and we can stop wasting everyones time.

In response to Reply # 0

I was sitting, parked at a nature trail, thinking through the logistics of living out of my car.

It's idiotic. And I know it. But that's the space I've been in lately.

More and more frequently, I find myself in a near frenzy, wondering where I should go. Where I actually CAN go.

The answer is nowhere. I can go nowhere and to no one. I can do nothing.

I feel trapped and frantic.

I am wringing my hands and standing on the edge of a cliff, wishing for a strong gust of wind.

I've been there before and starting to feel that way more recently. Didn't get to the living in my car part but feel like packing and just going somewhere, anywhere different where I'm not locked down and can forget about a lot of shit. I wish it was that easy.

It's cliche I know but it'll work out for you.

I really do.

But I think I'm kind of past the point of talking even helping anymore. I don't think there's anything for it now.

Either some things will change/work out and something worth holding on to will materialize, or not.

If not, I have at least put these words out there, eventually to be found.

oh i agree that talking just to be talking can be a waste of time...i should have clarified my comments...sometimes we don't know what we haven't yet thought of. talking to someone else can spark ideas about actions you can take to help your situation that you haven't thought of before..

waiting for the external environment to change ("something will change/work out or something will materialize") is one way. Figuring out what direct actions you can take to bring about those changes is another.

so again, I'm here if you want to brainstorm I want you to win!!!! and I know you can.

i wonder if my mother telling me, "you can do bad by yourself" is the reason I'm reclusive. I don't have a problem being alone. Is that because I still have people around that love me or because of my mother's words. I've walked away from many things as a result of those words...

my bff sent of text of her new ride...a brand new Benz. for like two seconds I envied her because I'm broke as hell right now (got my beyonce tic tho). then I remember she's always been my source of inspiration. She was I just a few years ago...

I've made peace with how my life is changing. I started getting rid of things...shit that's just sitting around taking up space and reminders of the past. I'm hopeful about the business and been it's a lot of work. I'm very aware of my weaknesses tho so I've hired more people to help. I'm working with a writer with hopes she'll draw things out of me so I can better articulate my vision. I freaking hate talking...let me just do it. lol

103. "I'm baffled by the Starbucks commotion..."
In response to Reply # 0

IMO...

It was the bias held by one person that caused this. Starbucks, as a company, didn't do it nor do I believe they foster that sort of culture. Fuck that manager for what she caused!

I get that the brush wanted to chill and wait. It was their prerogative to do so. I get that they didn't want to be treated any differently from others who may have been allowed to use the restroom without having purchased anything first. I don't get why ANYONE believes it's cool to just sit up in someone else's business without patronizing that business. Mofos really want to sit up, FOR FREE, and use up a business' resources but not contribute to that.

I don't get why the bros were arrested. Of course, the officers had the discretion to do so. However, that action was not warranted whatsoever. A waste of everyone's time.

I don't get the police commissioner being a punk ass dude. Yeah! He gotta tow the line but best believe them same cops, in the union and on their streets, are calling him a coon behind his back. So, why not speak up as a Black man and get people to understand that his force has to do a better job with utilizing discretion.

Did Starbucks fire that bum ass manager or just relocate her?

Why the boycott and protests? Just stop fucking around and start supporting Black-owned coffee shops that MAY value you as a person before seeing you as a customer. With that though, there will still be BIASED managers/employees that will treat you the same way.

So, what is we gon do?!?!

Aside from that, y'all watching these playoff games?

While I'm not one to camp out in Starbucks, anytime I go to a coffee shop that has free wifi I cop something... however, it's a coffee shop and most encourage folks to chill in hopes they will purchase something.

I can't imagine a book store or shoe store on some "you buy or GTFOH"

Expect More Than Coffee

It’s not unusual to see people coming to Starbucks to chat, meet up or even work. We’re a neighborhood gathering place, a part of the daily routine – and we couldn’t be happier about it. Get to know us and you’ll see: we are so much more than what we brew.
We make sure everything we do is through the lens of humanity – from our commitment to the highest quality coffee in the world, to the way we engage with our customers and communities to do business responsibly.

I've witnessed whole ass job interviews conducted there. I'm sure that someone being interviewed wouldn't be drinking coffee or eating scones n biscotti's

with that said...my personal stance...I like Starbucks...I frequent them regularly(every weekend)...hell i'm sitting on $30 on a giftcard...I didn't like Starbucks initial reaction/comments...I ain't gonna bump wit em for a lil while based upon that...
I don't like how the police are being let off the hook as if they didn't escalate the issue further vs de-escalate...
I DO like the fact that the founder said what he said on GMA and don't necessarily 'applaud' his efforts but acknowledge them because he really didn't have to. Starbucks isn't the enemy. The white lady manager is. I give them credit for attempting to right her wrong.

Plus I worked at a print shop and had to deal with customers every day.

One time I was parallel parking. Heavy traffic. This bitch runs behind my car WHILE I’m backing into the space and then tried to lecture me on how to watch for pedestrians. While I was with my lady.

I screamed BITCH STFU and rolled up the window.

The thing that irked me the most was she was so happy about it.

and that’s why I love and hate Philly. Love the people but every damn day I watched folks try to start shit for no reason

A lot to unpack, but I have to consider whether he's exposed to this type of thing too much. There are just so many people begging for money on the train nowadays in our area. And quite a few of them like to approach each person on the train individually.

I didn't even anticipate having a talk with my child about homelessness.

if they choose to or make enough mistakes that lead them to that point. Made them realize that humoring themselves (or others), at the expense of someone else's misfortune, is an easy way to look like an ass. Made them hand money, out of their pockets or money that I handed to them, to the homeless beggar.

Taught them the concept of: "How much Does A Dollar Cost?"

And I also let them know that I'd light their asses up if I ever caught them making fun of someone else's misfortune. What they do with those jewels is up to them now that they are adults.

And proud to say that I never had to light anybody's ass up.

This morning, i dropped him off at daycare (he's 4). Before i could even get to work, his teacher called me saying that he had a tantrum, kicked and hit her and another teacher.

I didn't even know what to say to her. Sorry? OK? Thanks for calling?
I tried to talk to him on the phone, but he's 4 and is having a meltdown, shit won't do anything.

Only thing I've been thinking about all day is 'I'm gonna beat his ass when he gets home." I guess bc that's all I know. My mother beat the fear and respect of authority into me as a child. And i wasn't even a bad kid but i knew if I acted up in school moms was gonna whup my ass.

Not even sure if beating him will do anything. We try talking to him. Some days are good, some days are bad. I'm at a lost. I don't want him to have behavioral problems, especially since he will be starting school next year. fuck man. Our daughter was SO easy. i can count on one hand the number of times she acted up in school, and she's 9. This mofo here is a challenge.

Only reason I ask is...
I have girls...but my biggest fear is how "aggressive" label is tacked onto Black kids at a very young age, especially Black males. I'm sure you already know...but just make sure them teachers aren't making a mountain out of a molehill. 4 years throw tantrums...that's pretty much a big part of being a 4 year old. They shouldn't be calling you about that stuff.....just like they wouldn't call you every time he takes a piss or a shit...

We had to squash that shit with my daughter when she was 3-4.... Teacher called us in on some "Lil miss FLUIDJ hit another kid in his private area and we thought you should come in so that we can discuss"
I was LIVID...at the TEACHERS....

She don't know a fcking public from a private and I was very angered that they had even made THAT an issue.. The "issue" was hitting. Period. Even THEN it shouldn't warrant y'all calling me away from my job to "discuss". We pay and trust you all to do a certain job. Part of that job is assisting in guiding children how to express their frustrations and anger. Period. There's layers...but this is already turning into a longer reply than i'd intended.

and we have those same concerns, regarding how teachers can perceive Black kids. However, I know my son. I don't even know where this behavior comes from. We try to teach him that he doesn't put his hands on anyone. I guess the challenge for us is finding a way to really get that shit across. Most folks (like my mother) I know would beat their kids until that shit stuck. We've tried that and talking to him. I'm lost. We didn't have any of these challenges with our daughter. Acting up in public and all that shit.
Shit is embarrassing and frustrating.

What helped us, when rearing our kids, was that we had to recognize that each child was different from the one that came before. The tactics that worked on one were different from what worked on the other.

Consistency in rules. But how to get the kids to comply was different.

It helped us to treat each child as their own person, with their own needs, as opposed to comparing them or placing in the same box their predecessor was in.

Wishing you guys the best of luck with it. I'm sure you'll make the right choices to help get your son in line.

Already thinking about karate for her when she is a little older just so she can defend herself and know when to use those hands.

First of all, they don't seem to be professionals and its messed up that that teacher or someone else at the school isn't trained in child development. What should have happened is someone at the school should be sitting down with you and talking with you about strategies to teach your son, based on THEIR education and expertise.

>Only thing I've been thinking about all day is 'I'm gonna beat
>his ass when he gets home." I guess bc that's all I know.

As Black people, i feel...that's always been all we knew and ultimately, it does far more harm than good. Beating isn't parenting. It just isn't. And there's too much research and resources at our fingertips for this to be the answer anymore.

With any skilled profession...IT, lawyers, doctors, tech etc there's a constant learning process happening...they stay up on the latest shit because knowledge is always evolving. We gotta parent that way

We gotta keep learning...we gotta read, study human development, child development...etc. There are skills and strategies that can help.

>Not even sure if beating him will do anything. We try talking
>to him. Some days are good, some days are bad.

And that's normal...kids of that age are gonna have good days and bad days. Its completely unrealistic for us to expect kids to "act right" all the time...and we shouldn't want them to out of fear..that's trauma.

We just have to teach them how to communicate better. How to express their emotions in a safe and healthy way. How to articulate when they want something and how to handle it when they can't have it. How to manage their own emotions. How to handle being bored. Its a process and it takes ALOT of patience and repetition and studying and paying attention to his personality and strengths.

I recommend an amazing book called The Conscious Parent. It really talks about how to enable to child to lead you in the best way to parent them..sounds hokey, i know, and maybe i'm not summarizing it well but its an approach that i've found to be very effective.

Its the difference between a child whining about going to the toy store and the parent responding "NO! WE'RE NOT GOING TO THE STORE WE DON'T HAVE MONE YFOR THAT!"

and another parent responding: "why do you want to go? what would you buy there? what's your favorite toy? How do you think they make that toy?"...thereby redirecting the whining with engaging questions and conversations...depending on the age of the child, and if this is used consistently, the child will forget to keep whining about going to the toy store.

>I don't want him to have behavioral problems, especially since
>he will be starting school next year. fuck man.

you care so you're already a great dad. You'll be fine. Do some research, try some things, learn who he is and how he thinks and what he responds to and what he cares about...then you can find the ways to help his teachers do the same.

I feel like way more parenting conversations are needed on these boards...like maybe a weekly post?

as we are all aging, most of us have kids and face similar challenges...we gotta support each other.

Btw, this doesn't sound hokey at all.
It's something I strongly believe in...

I'm trying to replace it with more words and redirect her energy.

It's hard sometimes tho when she is climbing on furniture and about to bust her head open and I'm holding a 10 month old.

I'm going to peep this book

this has nothing to do with developing a healthy relationship with food or developing healthy eating habits

and it's an approach that violates many smart ppls core values around health and wellness - and is even proven NOT to be successful in the long run, even for ppl who lose lots of weight initially (but i'm stubborn and confident and am pretty sure i got this)

so take this with a big ol grain of salt (that you shouldn't eat)

but the key of all keys is this: eat few calories, drink hella water (like an enormous amount of water) and you'll lose weight

seriously that's it. just don't eat really lol. I'm eating 480-640 calories a day and drinking like 150-200oz of water

I was hungry as shit for like 2 days, and have felt great since. I miss food desperately, but not due to hunger. I'm lightweight intimidated by the inevitability of having to eat more eventually - this routine feels great rn. I couldn't imagine having to eat more tbh - which of course I will.

it's easier for men, and for younger ppl

if you can muster the discipline to do this, the questions that remain are these:

how low can you go, while still meeting your basic nutritional needs and not hurt yourself - and what items do you eat to accomplish this

AND

when you've dropped the weight, how will you transition to more calories without fucking up (most ppl fuck this up)

You have to bump back up to some degree - there are divergent philosophies as to how many daily calories are *really* ideal for an ongoing lifestyle - I'm thinking +/- 1200 for me, but clearly the 600 or whatever I'm currently eating is just a rapid weight loss strategy, not a healthy lifestyle

AND LASTLY

once you're at the stage when you start adding more calories back in - one of the most important details to maintaining your weight loss is to proportionally increase your exercise - in order to balance out the new calories. BUT BUT BUT if you've already been exercising a lot while you were in calorie restriction mode, increasing that significantly enough is gonna be a real challenge - so the other kinda counterintuitive key is to NOT exercise too much when you're not eating shit, so that you have an exercise ceiling to raise when you eat more and need to

so yeah this shit is all math kinda

there's plenty of strategy i could talk abt in terms of how i set up my life in order to make this work successfully for me - it doesn't just happen cause you know intellectually not to eat, but that's the basic concept

when i did lose weight in the past, that's pretty much what I did, but not purposefully

this is really helpful and i'm gonna get back on it...especially now that i'm driving Uber full time. obviously i'm gaining weight cuz i'm eating the same amount of calories, but now just sitting in a car for 8 hours a day LOL

so yes. I can do this.

thanks so much

for healthy living

It's strictly a tactical approach for heavy ppl to drop weight. But in that regard, it's bulletproof

And don't minimize the water part - drowning the hunger is an important part of the equation

That is super fucking awesome! And super hardcore lol. 480-640 calories a day is....extreme lol. Like I thought I was doing something with my 1200 (currently 1400), but you are going the distance.

If it's not too much, what does an average day look for you mealwise? I'm always curious how people are eating.
