if you had to choose one and only one.

increased autonomy and responsibility?
sheltered safe space?

which description does the college experience tilt toward more heavily?

*(assume youre away from home)

It's isolation, but at the same time, being locked into a career is a similar type of isolation.
Of course...I guess this does kinda depend on the size of the school too....

...then they would probably benefit from college being an isolated bubble. If I'm studying physics or electrical engineering then I need to be immersed in that world of numbers and logic. It's a huge investment to learn specialized fields, and trying to mix "the real world" into that just makes it harder.

Of course, not every college student is after a tough-to-earn degree tho.

I don’t think it’s really that different.

What exactly are you in when you mean the thick of it?

Dorm shit? On campus shit?

I think college is closer to real life because you don’t have anyone forcing you to be in the thick of it. You have to motivate yourself.

That was prolly the realist real life shit I experienced. No meal plan? Shiieeeet.

My first year I went to UT in Knoxville. You could go to the cafeteria as many times as you wanted from 7AM to 7PM.

I’m talking omelets made to your request type meals. That ain’t real life.

I have a teenager in my house who is in many ways useless. I look forward to her learning how to get places on time, and make a whole bunch of decisions on her own. The good thing about college campuses is that when she makes a lot of bad decisions, which she ultimately will, it's a safe environment where those decisions won't have lasting effect.

But it is nowhere near the real world, its just closer to the real world then her current sheltered environment.

interesting question posed though - relative to how you framed it

it *CAN* be a step toward autonomy (or better said maturity, in the getting out from under your parental covering and making decisions with less of a safety net)

but in may ways it is indoctrination to a specific kind of conformity

*ponders*

tens of thousands of young people, drinking, smoking, fucking. figuring themselves out. going to class, skipping class. studying, networking, bettering yourself. charity/community work. there was always something to do around every turn. a safety net for your fuckups short of them being criminal. also campuses/collegetowns tend to be very insular unless you're smack dab in the middle of a big city

those first 6 months postgrad of being broke, unemployed and bored to insanity damn near made me lose my mind. learned more then than at anytime in college.

so i'm gonna say "Away"

if I understand your question correctly...

see, I was always told college is suppose to make folks “well rounded”; yet, I’m not sure if that’s always true. Like, there’s not a lot of poor folks that go to college. I think..it would depend on the child’s upbringing...

-I grew up in a 'hood' (East St. Louis) and it was mostly Black.
-I went to school heavy on diversity (Asians, Middle Easterners, Hispanic, Black, White, Gay, etc) so I got exposure to cultures I'd never had before.
-I actually interacted with these people and not just went to class with them.
-I was a business major so I learned how corporate America functions, both the pretty and ugly sides of it (Had a marketing professor legit walk us through a case where ziplock figured out the sales in the southeast were due to the drug trade and ziplock threw their hands up like 'welp, now we know, it is what it is.' lol
-I got waaaaaaaaay more comfortable with women and learned a big chunk of what I know now about 'mutual satisfaction' in college. Learned a lot about relationships too. Co-ed dorms.
-Social issues became more important
-I got real exposure to career oriented jobs
-Was completely independent from my parents (I went to school in Chicago)
-Learned preparation is important the less you prepare, the harder completing tasks are. That's a life lesson you don't really get at 18 but by 21 it was clear.
-I got exposed to programs, technology and knowledge that eventually helped me be competitive for jobs post-grad.
-Partied, learned my limits lol

Don't get me wrong, there's a definite safety net. If you don't make any major mistakes, it's a safe place. But it's a safe place to learn...which it should be.

At least that's what it was for me.

About the only thing "real world" is not living in mommy/daddy's house anymore (which is actually a big step, and helps balance this a bit).

Doesn't seem like dissenting points of view are looked at as just "spirited debate" anymore, but rather an attack on all that is right. Still seems very clique-y.

I commuted on the train into Philly for college. It was very similar to having a real job and I treated it like one. I left, came into the city to attend class, and went home, then went to work. There wasn't really much typical college life. I liked it honestly. I hated school and my stupid grocery store job and was very ready to move on. I got my degree in 3 years and was glad to be done and get a real job.

When I think about the typical college experience, that sounds a lot like high school 2.0 to me. I'm sure it's extremely fun too, but I dont regret the route I took.
