"LMAO at all these lying ass NFL boycotters"

especially these Iggle fans.

Had a friend boycott the NFL till around week 10 when the Iggles started making that run.

and these other niggas who always talk about how they held it down but then add a "I watched highlights.. it was on but I was doing something else"

nigga... that isn't how a boycott works.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

In a way I'm not part of the national zeitgeist or even local
I don't know how Washington or Dallas did but everyone talked about things
Sports talk radio is essentially pointless during the season if you're not following the game
And you miss cultural events in real time. When all of a sudden the timeline starts blowing up and you have no clue what's going on.
Or a friend texts you "omg omg omg" after the Vikings thing and you're watching Dragon Ball Super at the time so you kind of mini panic.
At the same time I've never been a huge fan of the NFL.
We got invited to a super bowl party and the boycott gives me a convenient reason not to socialize or leave the house
But I'm rooting for my eagles friends.

He didn't play most of this year I think.
DC all they care about is the Cowboys and Washington, it's the weirdest thing for a person that's actually from Texas, particularly with how little Houston fucked with the Cowboys to come all the way up here and have everyone be Cowboys fans.

that we have zero commitment to ourselves as a people these days lol. I mean, I dunno how Monique thought a Netflix boycott would work when people can't even flip the channel past a football game.
This is easy for me to say since the only football game I ever watched after I quit playing was the Super Bowl. Now I refuse to even watch that. A friend invited me to a Super Bowl party, and I reminded him Idfw the NFL on account of their treatment of Kaepernick. He like "aww man cmon." I just said "you know me" and that was that. I couldn't live with myself if I participated in some slave culture shit that's so easily avoidable. That simple action just seems like a test that millions of us failed imo.

Sometimes I wonder what it would take.
Like if the NFL was sponsoring military tanks patrolling Black neighborhoods and killing us, would Black folks still play in it and watch it? How often would the deaths have to happen? 300 times a year? A million? How serious does the issue have to be for us to stand with us? Is there an issue serious enough?
Granted, Monique's Netflix boycott didn't make the best sense, but I think all Black folks abandoning the NFL is very sensible.

things got interesting toward the end when the Vikings almost made it to the Superbowl. I live down the street from US Bank Stadium. After home games my neighborhood is full of Vikings fans leaving the game. It's already a fucking mess here now for the big one. Me and the homie were having a conversation during the playoffs about if we'd watch if they made it to the Superbowl. I decided no. Not even then. The only highlights I've seen are those from the "Minneapolis Miracle" because they were impossible not to see if you live in this city but...

Yeah I think I'm just gonna be done with football period.

I won't even be home on Super Bowl Sunday to watch the game. I'm going to a show. I am a diehard football fan but once I made the choice, I stuck with it.

New Orleans is a football crazy city so it is not the easiest thing to avoid but I did. I watched a ton of Netflix this season. I'm not sure about next year. I'm unsure what the impact will be, if any.

Funny enough, I am a lifelong Giants fan and I root for the Saints (because I live here). I'm not watching and the Giants have the worst season in their history and the Saints almost make the Super Bowl. Crazy!

This is the first season, in more than 20 years, that I've not attended at least one game. Nor have I bought any NFL paraphernalia (except $ spent on alumni dues and that swag they send in return).

Total I've watched two and a quarter full games, visiting someone's home with a group where I didn't control the TV. I've caught numerous highlights by happenstance, but never specifically intended to watch them--didn't turn immediately either.

Months ago I did submit background screening info & a passport photo for the Superbowl credential application, to crew the game--and was confirmed early this month...because of my 3/4 boycott, I've decided not to go, even though in the NFC the Eagles are my favorite.

after the Cheatriots won 5, especially after last year's bullshit in the SB I was pretty much convinced, ahead of any real "boycott" that I wasn't going to get invested this year.

then the Eagles had to fuck around and be good, so I could not escape at least talking about it, since everyone around me knows that I'm an Eagle fan.

Still, I spent the entire NFL season doing everything and anything else during the time the games are on TV. at best, checking scores on Google.

also, Cleveland (where I live) went 0-16 so there's something else I couldn't escape.

NFL's YouTube channel is actually very good. Full archival games, highlights tailored to your team.

the Eagles are in the Super Bowl for the first time in 13 years.
they're playing my most hated team.
someone else I dislike almost as much as said team's QB/Coach is doing the halftime show.

Eagles win, I'm partying.
But I'll probably go back to my "minimal contact" level next year.

I used to chase illegal streams just to see the Eagles

I'm not dealing with all of that to see the Cheatriots in the SB year after year.

I ain't sayin playoff's but maybe .500
but yeah if they

snatch a decent free agent qb (Cousins...any of the Vikings qb's)
draft Barkley @ 1
draft ANYTHING they want @ 2 (i'd take the guard from ND)

they'd have a legit roster

definitely can cause problems in the North

>snatch a decent free agent qb (Cousins...any of the Vikings
>qb's)

I think Cousins might go to Denver (or at least I hope he does... AFC needs more competent QBs, and Denver is a place lacking in them. I'm still mad at Assweiler for screwing up the good thing the Texans had going in the '16 season playoffs)

I think Vikes somehow keep Keenum and Teddy... Bradford might be available, depending on the price. I think he actually might be the "veteran" QB for Cleveland.

Cleveland got a lot of ways to go (obviously) but they do have high picks. I'd draft a QB at 1, whatever at 2 -- they need to fortify that offense.

I think they could even win with Kizer tbh, but to do so they need to build around that O-Line.

the rest of the AFC North is the most vulnerable they've ever been

Pittsburgh is gonna ride out Ben as far as they can, but their defense is super suspect (how you give up 40+ to Blake Bortles and 'em).

Cincinnati is basically the "Buttskins" of the AFC North, messin' around with Dalton. one season they had the North all to themselves and STILL effed it up in playoff time. they end up in mediocrity so they can't get someone else in there. can't be mad at Marv about to cash out. that dude been coach for a long time.

and Baltimore is on the verge of blowing it up. I've been watching a lot of Ravens stuff from the last few years on YouTube, particularly Flacco. the last SB they won he put on one hell of a leading performance. even before then... controversy notwithstanding Ray Rice was messin' dudes up. and they still had a couple seasons of McGahee. I think as long as their front office (besides that bum ass owner) remains intact they'll be back.

which leaves Cleveland, who has all the picks and basically has to start from ground zero.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

That's what I mean...I'd take an effective/game managing vet...that way you don't have to waste ANOTHER first round pick on a qb....and like u said...Kizer has slight possibilities but he is a future backup

Snatch Barkley at 1...you got your franchise/ he's a problem rb...
Snatch Nelson at 4...he will be a HOF guard...dude is legit

ya'll already have receivers as long as Josh does Gordon ...get another weapon 2nd rd...go all in on defense the rest of the draft

like the Browns have an ok roster f'real

>the rest of the AFC North is the most vulnerable they've ever

ABSOLUTELY!!!

They have more internal problems than a little...my homeboy swears we should just trade coaches....Tomlin to bmore and Harbs to Pitt...both are similar yet different enough to be perfect for both teams/cities

Nah...we got the pitchforks out down here....EVERYBODY is mad at the entire front office...Ozzie is public enemy #1...Harbs has no more friends because he kept Mornignweg...Pees retiring and then poppin back up with Tennessee a month later is VERY telling....the owner is having his yearly press conference in an hour and the entire area is tuning in because they want answers...erybody mad down here lol...our roster is butt..... we went all in on defense last draft and ............nothing to show for it...we beat up on under 500 teams

After "Nipplegate", Viacom blacklisted Miss Jackson, effectively banning her unofficially from performing in the SB. Meanwhile Timberlake will perform his awful music for a 3rd time...which is probably a record.

i know a lot of other people like that who dialed it back a bunch this season too.

I gave up the idea of feeling guilty for watching... Ultimately the real issue had nothing to do with football and all the football drama really took the conversation away from what mattered.. it was total distraction from the real issue and played right into the hands of those who would perpetuate the problem...

I still wasn't making time for watching football but I wasn't going to turn away if someone else had it on (i.e. Thanksgiving).

Going forward I think protests need to take a different form in order to have staying power and to remain effective. I don't know exactly what could've been done differently but I just don't think not watching football is enough. I'm more in the camp that argues for black men withdrawing from the NFL to a league that gives them more power and equity.

niggas DEFINITELY boycotted this season...all niggas? no...but there was DEFINITIELY a huge dent put into it by niggas

BUT

the NFL didn't/doesn't/refuses to acknowledge that it's not just the deplorables who stopped watching cause they see niggas on they knee's for a 90 seconds

so then the narrative ALWAYS goes back to bringing back THEIR eyes on the screen...

hell they even did a poll to prove that it's 40% on both ends of the spectrum of boycotting

I still say the most effective way to boycott is via consumerism...target the sponsors ...
niggas spend money...yt folks save money...

I can't look down on any nigga who chose not to watch the NFL this year...plus most of the league is filled w/clowns n coons anyways so there's that too

they figure the only fans are the PSL season ticket holders aka those that 'don't live in the city'

COMPLETELY ignoring the fact that:
- this IS Baltimore
- 'they' ain't the only ones who can afford the PSL tickets...some of 'us' here got dough too...and WAYYYYYYYYYYYY more than they assume...we just don't cop because they usually sold out
- the handling of the Kaep w/ the Ray and Him w/ the Django thing
- the kneeling in London and standing for their anthem REALLY hurt their feelings...I 'kinda' get that and can hear them out on that
- the actual football/personnel/draft/coaching/scheme/injury woes

so tomorrow he is holding his State of the Ravens address ....which is normally held a week after the regular season ends..and EVERYBODY is gonna be coming at his neck...so he has a clusterf*** on his hands

I've never liked him

>I still say the most effective way to boycott is via

i agree here in almost all cases. and theres no reason not to boycott the sponsors too.

but the nfl gets a large sum of money (tens of billions) from their tv broadcast rights deals (cbs, nbc, fox, espn, directv, etc). and the majority of that money gets distributed to the different teams.

so you gotta fuck up *that* pipeline to really disrupt them imo. if ratings fall dramatically...the broadcasters get antsy and the advertisers on those broadcasters get antsy (broadcasters make most of that deal money back through ad inventory). i forget the exact term for it...but when a channel doesnt hit a certain ratings/viewings mark...they return a portion of the money paid by advertisers.

broadcasters also heavily promote a lot of their other programs during nfl games. so if less people tune into nfl games...then it also leads to less people tuning into their other programs. cue the advertiser issue again.

if broadcasters and advertisers start seeing a horrible return on investment then that puts a lot more uncertainty on the next broadcast rights deals...affecting everything from team revenue, advertiser/broadcaster stock value, etc.

you start impacting them on that level...you start seeing some real change.

49. "yeah 5 year deal with fox sports exclusively right?"
In response to Reply # 43

iono if you were thinking the effect of this years 'boycott' would be immediate. but it would obviously have to be a long term far reaching type of thing. im not sure how far ratings even fell this year alone. im not even sure there was really a widespread coordinated boycott (outside of anecdotal evidence).

the fact that fox paid that much doesnt necessarily forecast future success either. 21st century fox just sold off their entertainment assets to disney...and kept the sports arm. they got a bunch of cash on hand to spend and are obviously focusing more on sports.

like primetime tv shows, other sports (except nba whose ratings are actually going up), etc. seems like ratings are dropping around that percentage across a lot of different areas.

sounds steep but i dont know if/how they factor in dvr, official streaming (direct channel websites and streaming via authorized providers like hulu, youtube, sling, etc) and so on. plus you got the cord cutters making their dent too.

In response to Reply # 56

are purely speculative with some based on surveys with questionable methodology.

this was a pretty shitty regular season by most accounts. i mean...you had jags, rams, and titans in the playoffs. and primetime game selection has been pretty poor at least the past 2 years.

ratings dropped a good bit from the year before too and there was no boycott. they tried to nail it down to games being too long, too many commercials/ads, rule changes, lack of celebrations, etc.

basically nobody knows wtf the reason is lol. could just be usual peaks and valleys.

every article I've seen trumpeting the ratings were down and claiming it was because of any boycott from anyone was complete bullshit.

I don't know how much the league was affected by anything, and I don't think anyone else does either.

for the thousandth time: ratings for a looot of stuff have been off for the last year.

the NFL had just had an unprecedented ratings peak a few years ago, and had been sliding since.

so then the narrative ALWAYS goes back to bringing back THEIR eyes on the screen...

I'm not even sure what you're citing, the NFL hasn't been specific about anything in terms of ratings.

from sitting to protest police shootings being twisted into "disrespecting the flag/military", the old a$$ owners taking a knee just to protest trump, kap getting blackballed, etc etc the point was getting lost

but at the end of the day, what else was ppl really expecting the nfl to do, beyond what happened

obviously they coulda come to the table sooner, worked with more orgs, players coulda negotiated better, etc

and i think kaep filed the lawsuit too soon (before mad qb's started getting hurt), but after that it was basically "over". watch or dont watch. take or knee or dont take a knee

now ppl protesting bc of the violence, or the crappy teams, pats cheating, etc sure, please continue.

That's sop with critics of protest. BLM becomes all lives matter. MLK Jr was called a trouble maker and every name in the book. It's always about distorting and co-opting.

People should push for more than throwing money at it. Owners and sports league associations made politicians jump through hoops on other issues like the bathroom controversy in N.C.

NC had a law or bill that made for a very specific target

Same for when blk folk could fight against segregation.... the enemy was clear

Meanwhile Obama and holder couldn't even come up with good strategies for cop shootings, except weak recommendations after the fact

So I surely wasnt expecting nflpa and the league to come up with +the+ solution. Or get some kinda new legislation passed

getting grief for protesting when he was literally the victim of police personally harassing him was the straw the broke the back for me watching the NFL. I promptly gave up when I saw that and I haven't watched a game since.

To be honest, it was fairly easy for me to give up watching because I don't have a favorite team and in prior seasons, I lost interest more and more as the years went on. I would literally fall asleep during most games on Sunday afternoons.

I have to admit it's going to be tough to occupy myself this Sunday since more television networks aren't going to air good content, but I'll have to be creative I suppose.

But anyway, since nba was not in the middle of a athlete protest mvmt/controversy, nobody looked to the league to get involved or anything
