"Chris Rock tried to make sexual harassment funny"

https://pagesix.com/2017/11/05/chris-rocks-jokes-about-sexual-harassment-bomb/

Chris Rock tried out some new material about sexual harassment at the Comedy Cellar on Thursday night, and some women were not amused.

Rock said he won’t hire women anymore because he would need a crew of witnesses around him at all times so he wouldn’t be accused of rape, one patron of the MacDougal Street club told me.

“They cry rape because they want money,” said Rock, who added he won’t even hire a cleaning lady because he’s afraid of false accusations.

“I’ve seen him before and he was hysterical, but this wasn’t funny at all,” said one woman.

“Nobody was laughing. There were many boos and many women who were telling him he was a sexist pig. Two people got kicked out.”

Rock’s friend Jeff Ross, who was waiting to go on when Rock finished, was asked by Rock for a new topic. “Talk about growing up in Brooklyn,” Ross yelled.

But Rock kept going back to sexual harassment anyway. Rock said he felt the wrath of Harvey Weinstein. “Weinstein f–ked with me by trying to have me star in the worst movies of all time,” he said of roles he didn’t take.

Rock’s publicist had no comment.

After 20 minutes, Rock exited to silence, and Ross took the stage. “Now that we got that Chris Rock kid out of the way . . .” Ross said.

A spokeswoman for the club had no comment.

after the first few weren't hitting, he needed to move on tho.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I've heard him (or was someone else) describe his process for trying out new material which is to go to smaller clubs and just read shit dead pan to see if the idea alone gets laughs.

If the shit ain't funny, it dies in the comedy cellar.

Seems not cool that you can't work out material for fear it will end up in the paper.

What I want to know is did Larry David work out his picking up women in a concentration camp material he performed on SNL.

And the Weinstein jokes they tried fell flat during the week so the scrapped it from the show.

where one typically goes to work out material. at least i'd think not b/c it's kinda well-known as a place where one can catch famous comics doing stand-up.

so if i were to see Rock on stage there i'd think he's performing material he worked out elsewhere. plus since it's in NYC right in Manhattan a comic like him especially should expect an appearance on that stage to be news-worthy. if only entertainment news-worthy, still.

there are indeed places like you mentioned but i dunno that CC NYC is one of them.

In response to Reply # 27

Let's be real. This isn't a really big news story.

And it sounds like his material was extra atrocious.

But I do recall Dave Chappelle made some headlines because people thought he was defending trump while working out some material.

https://splinternews.com/dave-chappelle-steps-in-it-defends-trump-1793863479

Of course, when we heard the material it was actually very different from how it was reported on...while he was working it out.

I am arguing this isn't really a big deal. It's a page six item.

Whether his material was problematic I don't know, I didn't hear the jokes and alot can get lost in the translation of a page six reporter reporting what a witness heard a comedian say.

it's entertainment news. which you say isn't a big deal.

i don't know what to think of the material b/c the only report i see about the jokes is based on the account of a person who was seemingly offended. so i dunno if the retelling missed some part of the joke or some element of Rock's performance that was key to the whole thing. Rock's pretty good at joking about controversial stuff so i'd expect him to handle this subject in a funny way. but like many man comics he's got a problem w/joking about women and women's sexuality. so i can see the jokes bombing too. i dunno.

but if he's working on som'n i expect these jokes if they're part of it will be better than what i read in this story.

fuck you.

A listers try out material because those clubs value privacy and have zero tolerance policy for audience members taping comics. Those who aren't A listers dont really workshop material at these clubs because they're audiences paying a decent ticket price to go, but no name clubs/open mics dont have nearly the security of a place like the Cellar or the Store.

main entrance who I guess checks ya ticket and then when you're in there it's basically just the MC and the waiting staff

although, I used to always go thru the entrance that the comedians would sometimes use from the restaurant/ bar above

wasn't never really anybody walking around watching the audience and whatnot, I dunno.

Those are more for larger scale shows that are harder to police. The Cellar is way easier to see what people are doing.

I used one of those for Kevin Hart. They're actually way efficient to use, but no - small clubs don't use them. In fact, I saw Chappelle not long ago and they just told people to not bring phones in. People did, of course, and I didnt and had to figure out how to get a damn cab home.

performance.

Because the CC is definitely a room where Big star comedians go to work out material. Shit with Chris Rock preparing for shows at MSG and Barclays in December, anything short of big theaters is a small room for him to work out material.

cuz, shit, a famous comic should know that showing up there on stage doing new material is going to make news. that's not a place to try out material that one doesn't want reported, i would think. b/c of course it's gonna get reported.

where do they go if they don't want the material in the news? do those places exist?

The point isn't to not have their material in the news.

and it wouldn't end up in the news never existed?

b/c i've seen ppl lamenting for those spaces and complaining that it's difficult to workshop anything b/c now it's news whereas there used to be places where they could do that w/o making news. these places they talk about no longer exist? did they ever?

CC being one of them or not one of them even though it's famous and right in a media capital so of course whatever happens there is news (as has been proved by this Rock story and that January story). but do or did those places exist? if they never existed then what are those ppl talking about?

its not about it being low-profile. Its about people not paying to see him work out his material. If it bombs, you saw chris rock unexpectedly. If it hits, you got to see a great show. Its a win-win.

since the joint is so famous and is located right in the heart of the media capital of the US then a comic like Rock knows if he bombs there it's going to be news-worthy. especially just showing up like that, unannounced.

so where are these places where comics try out material w/o it being heard by the gen pop? do they exist after all? i've heard ppl talk about them but they may not really be a thing.

Eddie, they ALLLL pop up there to try out new material. It'll be on the main Chocolate Sundays Night with Pookie, and it's never announced that they'll be there...they just show up.

The Monday night spot that Spike does is similar. So these are major comedy clubs in a major comedy market, but the stars do go there to test out their material because it's still "small" compared to the Staples Center shows they do.

And honesty. His comedy was raw and lived off the call back.
Rocks isn't that. His only call back methods are "that's right!" or "you know I'm right"

Patrice lived off the back and forth with the audience. Which makes regurgitation that much worse. Because it argues for a position that one doesn't hold, to an audience, that's not able to reply to the source material.

And accuse others of it.
He asked you a question that you don't wanna answer.
Instead of saying that, you state the obvious reason
he asked the question (that you haven't answered it).
But sure dude.
People are coming at you passive aggressively, even
though no one has.
You don't have to answer anything, but miss me with

You don't want to answer. Pretending that
your reason for that changes anything is
another of your passive aggressive tactics.

Are you wishing me a good day now, or do you
wanna keep this up?

I get paid to use words, Im pretty good at communicating whatever I would like to whoever whenever I would like. My exact words were "I haven't stated an opinion either way", which should have been taken as politely dismissive

do you think he has a problem w/the report?

do you have a problem w/the audience reaction to those jokes? if so, what?

the only reporting about the material itself came from an audience member who was possibly one of those who didn't think the material was funny. so the retelling might've missed some element that could've made the material funny to someone else. i dunno.

i know Rock has been pretty good at making jokes about controversial stuff so i am surprised that these jokes allegedly bombed.

fuck you.

I think comedians pop up at tree spots and do a quick set to see what the climate is like and to keep themselves fresh. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens a ton and we never hear about it unless it’s really bad or some epic shit like Cenario posted.

There is a distinct misinterpretation of what is going on and its clear in your reply. Theres many stupid shit going on in the tornado of misinformation here

- Work shopping new material and it flopping in a few shows doesn't mean its fully scrapped or that the bit sucks. Regardless of the reasons it flopped means you refine it till it works on that type of crowd. You keep chipping away at it till you get there and find out how to word shit a certain way. Most bits that we love from the great comedians have started out shitty because they didnt' know what part of the material was the fat they needed to trim or how they needed to word it

- For some reason audiences think no matter at what point they are hearing the bit that its a statement. Thats usually the first mistake from a sensitive audience, which only means don't go to a comedy show if you can't distinguish that. But the bigger problem is that if you go see someone in the early stages of that tour of them working out bits, expect that the bits are far from perfect. There will be a lot of swing and misses along that journey that you are going to witness that either will be fixed or fully cut from their set when we see it on tv.

- Being offended at a comedy show is a cop-out for being a dumb fuck for being so willingly PC sensitive. Its easier to say someone sucked then it is to admit you are sensitive when you shouldn't be in that environment. Being offended in a comedy club is a choice. Theres no question to that. Those are the types of people who pretend they can take a joke, this is a clear indication they cannot. Comedy shows aren't for you, not sure why you pretend they are. Comedians are going to shit the bed, its the brilliance of trial and error. They are fully aware of this, and their process is not some inside secret. The only way you know if a joke is going to hit is by trying it out. Sometimes they don't. The main thing is at the end of the day its a bit. Not a statement. Their job is not to have a line, the are't trying to be cruel but they miss. And thats what those workshopping shows are for. People are always going to take shit out of context tho and most times its willingly and to me thats the funniest part of someone being offended. Its almost like they WANT to be.

Tired of people thinking because you are offended that it automatically means what was said was offensive LOL It doesn't work that way. Being offended is a point of view. You have every right to feel that way, but it doesn't mean you are right.

"What’s the difference between sexual harassment and just being an idiot? I mean, if my father didn’t harass my mother, I wouldn’t be here! I mean, I understand some sexual harassment.. if a man is your boss and says, “Hey, sleep with me, or you’re fired.” That’s sexual harassment. And that’s the only thing that’s sexual harassment! Everything else falls under “Just trying to get laid.” You can’t put a man in jail for that! I don’t care how hard he tries, that’s all he was trying to do! Anita Hill started this whole thing. It’s all about looks, you know? Because if Clarence Thomas looked like Denzel Washington, this would have never happened! She’d be all, “Oh, stop it, Clarence, you nasty! Your fine self!” So, what’s sexual harassment, when an ugly man wants some? “Oh, he ugly! Call the police! Call the authority!”"

Folks laughed HARD, and people even jokingly used it as a rule..."oh, she said he harassed her? That's only because she think he's ugly."

It's a new era now, so a lotta jokes just won't fly, even if it's "just a joke." Same way I saw Katt say some extremely transphobic jokes at Laugh Factory in 2004, and nobody in the crowd had an issue aside from the trans woman. Today, he woulda been dragged HARD.

Rock could do this same set that bombed on tour and shit might kill. Hell, shit mighta been funny if we heard the delivery.

Ionno, it definitely feels like we are living in the age of think piece/outrage. Folks go out to laugh but there are always a few folk who go out to comedy clubs waiting to be offended. Cause some comedians are going to cross that line or put their toes up to it.

But it came to tv in 2017 and that just doesn't fly. A few months ago he touched on the same topics and it was legit funny and time appropriate.
I don't think Rock is on the same level as Dave though.

I remember the first thing folks on here did was start their post with the trans disclaimer when talking about his special.

but the crowd was laughing at those jokes.

and the one clip I saw with him doing the “nights gonna be in high heels” had the whole place rolling.

I get folks trying to be super sensitive to everyone’s feelings but I think some people are trying too hard to make every space super safe. Only thing you can joke about is Trump. Anyone else leads to a think piece and talks about how it’s not the 90’s anymore.

Is this live or the specials on Netflix?

And yes the crowd loved it.
Two reasons for that.
1. Editing. People edit the hell out of live shows. Hannibal had Chris Rock on his podcast recently and explained that whole process.
2. The time. The specials we watched were about 5 years old. The crowd wasn't sitting in 2017 laughing at 2015. They were in 2015 laughing at 2015. I mean he made a Paula Dean joke. I found the first one funny, I found the second not as relevant to today. Like reading Langston Hughes and taking a mental pause at every utterance of "negro".

And this is work shopped material versus what ended up in the special.

And this is one persons account.

Again, I heard Chris Rock has this strange workshopping process where he just reads material with no form of delivery to see if the joke is funny or if people are just laughing because Chris Rock is telling them a joke.

I wouldn't read alot into this episode.

The only folks that should be privy to that concept of the comedy biz are comedians... now that EERRY body know..they are more forgiving and willing to give folks a pass for some bad comedy.

Bottom line...Chris made some unfunny/tasteless jokes. Let them shits be and lets hope that he moves on to some funny material next go around.

Comedy takes work, people.

Shit like this is probably why Eddie Murphy won't ever do it again. Reporting on some jokes with zero context and almost certainly misquotations is wrong. Comedians should have safety nets when trying out material...because it's a HARD thing to write a provocative joke that goes against groupthink.

I once saw Chris Rock at a small venue, and people went insane. He said, "How much was this show?" and someone told him $10, and he said, "Well, lower your expectations. You can't PARK at my shows for 10 bucks."

It's the same at the Cellar, or the Store, or any small venue. Comedians should have the freedom to eat dicks in order to make the jokes better. If you're going to take a thought that's near 180 degrees from the popular opinion, be prepared to fail for awhile or always. You think Louis CK's joke from a couple years ago, "Of course....but maybe" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O5h4enjrHw - came together easily? Going against the grain is very, very fucking tough.

The growing concern over recording material that isn't ready to be seen in a widespread way is very real, of course, but reporting on it in the blogosphere is almost as bad. Writing out jokes (again, likely misquoting them at the same time) gives zero context, inflection, etc. and truly hurts the development of material from these big celebrities.

Like look, you can keep harping on the same point, but that's simply not how it works.

Comics aren't comfortable performing in places that don't have their best interests at heart. Very VERY few venues, NATIONWIDE, are anything like the Cellar when it comes to making sure the comics have a non-intrusive space to work out material. And again, this goes for the top of the A-list comics. Going to a more fringe club or open mic would mean there isn't likely a reporter type, but it also means there's almost no security to protect against people recording the material...which IS worse than reporting on it.

Plus, Chris Rock lives in NYC. Why should he have to work out somewhere out of town when he probably wrote the joke that day and wanted to see if it works?

People overexplaining comedy is detrimental to the art form and comics are simply trying to adjust in today's 'everything is recorded and reported upon' environment.

But like...again...you were wrong about comics working material out there, so perhaps you should take a backseat on this one, k?

But you stood your ground so loudly and ignorantly that youve gone too far to even acknowledge that you are wrong. You are talking about a subject you clearly know nothing about but speak about so matter of factly solely based on the fact that it's partly based on a subject of injustice you feel strongly about. Feel strong about it all you want, but in the context of the original post and what you are arguing about you have zero fucking clue how comedy works and you refuse to give a fuck so what's the point of even discussing it further. You are smart. Just not in this subject. Keep it moving or admit you don't know what you are talking.

I'm not entirely sure what your beef with being wrong is, but it's in full display here.

sure, guy.

and here you 'sigh' and bemoan the fact that Rock can't try out material w/o it being reported in the press when he tried out that material on a stage in a world famous venue in the media capital of the USA. i call it bitching and whining. you call it what you want.

earlier i questioned whether it was odd for Rock to try out material at CC b/c others seemed to be similarly bemoaning the fact that Rock may have bombed and had that fact reported in the press. i figured maybe those ppl expected Rock to be able to bomb and have it kept secret b/c they too know of some place where a famous comedian can bomb w/new material and not have it reported. b/c that happening to a top comic on a world famous stage seems like news to me and i'd expect it to be reported. like if my man Prince showed up at First Ave in Minneapolis and played new material that stunk up the joint i'd not be pearl clutching if that info was reported. b/c of course that's gonna make news. so i was puzzled and asked questions trying to understand the reactions. now i've gained some clarity. and you came in right on time to provide the final clarity. those expectations are unrealistic. and y'all are really bitching and moaning b/c Rock may have been called out for telling unfunny anti-woman jokes. and THAT is what is really being lamented here. that anti-woman unfunny jokes are now news-worthy. when connected to what's in the air about anti-woman action and sentiment it all makes sense.

*shrug* *sigh*

I'm not reading this dumb ass reply either past the first couple sentences, because you're clearly just an angry dude with an axe to grind.

I told you about the neighborhood that I, a straight male, live in.

You got mad. Mostly because you didn't understand the area is a lot bigger than a one mile stretch of gay bars, but whatever it was...you just get mad at things.

The pattern here is that you're loud, wrong, and mad a lot. Over like...nothing. Which is weird.

Cause all this shit was, and is reasonable. Your defensiveness is now hilarious to me.

Also you're dodging admitting you were wrong, which is also just hysterical.

In response to Reply # 170

In retrospect...IS BEYOND TAME.

You won't go back and read it, because it'll prove you wrong. But I have never been a dick to you. You keep calling me a bitch, to eat dicks, to fuck off, and yet I've never once said anything to you that can even be construed as mean or dickish.

You're making no sense. Dunno why you have a beef with me, but here we are.

I even remember sending you an inbox apologizing if I did anything that offended you. But going back and reading that thread - I didn't do anything even remotely wrong. I didnt do anything wrong HERE either. You didnt reply because apparently you just dodge L's consistently.

But keep calling me a bitch if that makes you feel better, I guess.

I said "I sure hope he's ok". That was sarcasm at you being upset at me for literally nothing. I didnt know anything that has anything to do with your mental health prior to saying that. So, keep blaming me if you want. I'll sleep just fine I've done literally nothing.

Tru suggested WeHo trying to be funny. I took umbrage. You ASSUMED I had already visited WeHo in previous trips to LA. I hadn't bc I was uninterested. You clutched the pearls. You being one of those asshole know it alls that makes me wonder if you're a comic or just an annoying white guy who wants to be down just had to get me to like something you suggested so you went about WeHo and other places. I was uninterested but polite. Then you got snarky about me in a reply to someone else bc I didn't give a fuck about your suggestions bc I had plenty by then. That's when I went off.

Fuck You, ho.

West Hollywood is a punchline if you're trying to emasculate a straight male

I didnt think it was offensive to suggest a gay guy would be comfortable in *the* gay city, having had no clue of your preferred environmental factors

apologies if I came off as insensitive in any way

That you see and instead of talking to me privately trying to see what's wrong you make jokes publicly at my expense and invite others to join in making fun of me and my issues. You have yet to inquire what issues. I told you one. You make more jokes.

When it's an issue of fact that you are clearly wrong on, you like to double down instead of take the L and move on. Then you like to insult people and their families and tell them how you are better than they are. You also like to assume the worst in what other people are saying and even direct it imternally.

If the above is bc there is a mental health situation, my suggestion would be to man up, apologize, log off and go get the assistance you need.

This is beyond weird.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

If it's a mental health issue, and you're aware of it - go deal with it and log the fuck off. Me and Cenario aren't the bad guys here, so knock it off.

Right as it stands...it just looks like you're an angry guy on a dying internet forum who got mad when he was wrong.

Again.

I've seen him talk to legs similarly. But he gets pissed cause is tough Internet talk doesn't upset anyone.

And I've explained more than once that all I'm doing is trying to say something equally offensive as some awful offensive thing you and legs have posted. I fail bc I'm not as awful as you 2. i will never be able to get under your skin or be as offensive as y'all bc I don't have it in me. Like you here making fun of my issues. Lol. You're a piece of shit and the worst part of that is you not giving a fuck about how low you are.

Even watching his old stuff his relationship topics veered from genius to shitty 1950’s barbershop talk. I thought Five was pretty nuanced for once..his directing of the wife character made her be a harpy but she was supposed to be a Kim K type; the other strong female roles balanced it out.

I think a lot of folks are exasperated in this convo because folks are drawing strong opinions based on the gossip column's report from one person there. We have no idea if 95% of the people there thought it was the funniest thing they ever heard.

You're being a fucking asshole. Mental health issues don't excuse you for doing so. You're an adult. You don't get a pass to be a dick simply because of that. It exacerbates an existing problem - that you seem to think you can just be a dick on the internet and then say "Yeah I do have issues WHY DOESNT ANYONE REACH OUT"

Well.

Because you're being a fucking asshole. That's why.

Nobody is bullying you. They are punching back when you say things like "Fuck off" "Eat dicks" "Bitch" and so on.

Yet we're all the bad guys. Okay.

Dude seems to be saying he needs help.

He literally said he’s suicidal in this thread.

..i wasn't available for the fallout in real time, but it appears that all parties involved had a tough time letting go and simply walking away.

comedians have the right to try out any angle they feel is necessary to find the funny....but the fine print says the audience has the right to be offended.

If your bit falls flat or you are deemed as "offensive"...you gotta eat that shit and refine your bit. Comedy isn't static. It changes with the times you are living in. If you joke about some shit like that...it BETTER be hilarious, if that's even possible.

It's not rocket science.

Especially when all it takes is one person being offended and giving their take on the joke.

That’s the chance they take

That's what comedy is about. He'll see what works and then keep it moving. How they gonna do a play by play on somebody trying out material? That's some bs.

Everyone laughed. No one walked out. Didn't sound like what's described here. Maybe he was just working the joke out.
