What do you think about the alt-right? Reason I ask is because there is alot of crossover between Peterson followers and alt-right people. Not trying to say that Peterson is alt-right.

They took his Ubermensch idea and used it to justify antisemitism and crystal meth use even though Nietzsche was pretty vehemently against antisemitism.

Jordan is railing against the radical left because that's what he encounters, being a University professor. That doesn't mean he's riding for the radical right. He's doesn't like ideologues that try to impose their will on others, and that can come from either side of the political spectrum.

If Jordan Peterson were personally affiliated with the alt-right, and not just having specific quotes mined from his debates about the usage of gender pronouns by alt-righters for their agenda, it would color my opinions of him as a person. If you were female you were pregnant almost all the time, and you were worn out and half dead by the time you were 45. Men worked under abysmal conditions that we can’t even imagine. When George Orwell wrote The Road to Wigan Pier, the coal miners he studied walked to work for two miles underground hunched over before they started their shift. Then they walked back. said he couldn’t walk 200 yards in one of those tunnels without cramping up so bad he couldn’t even stand up. Those guys were toothless by 25, and done by 45. Then in the 20th century, people got rich enough that some women were able to work outside the home. That started in the 1920s, and really accelerated up through World War II because women were pulled into factories while the men went off to war. The men fought, and died, and that’s pretty much the history of humanity. And then in the 50s, when Betty Friedan started to whine about the plight of women, it’s like, the soldiers came home from the war, everyone started a family, the women pulled in from the factories because they wanted to have kids, and that’s when they got all oppressed. There was no equality for women before the birth control pill. It’s completely insane to assume that anything like that could’ve possibly occurred. And the feminists think they produced a revolution in the 1960s that freed women. What freed women was the pill, and we’ll see how that works out. There’s some evidence that women on the pill don’t like masculine men because of changes in hormonal balance. You can test a woman’s preference in men. You can show them pictures of men and change the jaw width, and what you find is that women who aren’t on the pill like wide-jawed men when they’re ovulating, and they like narrow-jawed men when they’re not, and the narrow-jawed men are less aggressive. Well all women on the pill are as if they’re not ovulating, so it’s possible that a lot of the antipathy that exists right now between women and men exists because of the birth control pill. The idea that women were discriminated against across the course of history is appalling.

Now groups that were discriminated against. What are you going to do about it? The only societies that are not slave societies are western enlightenment democracies. That’s it. There are tens of millions of people that don't agree with social justice warriors....disagree with modern feminisim, disagree with BLM, disagree with LGBT activism. Those positions do not make them alt-right. I understand that there is some crossover....but there's also crossover with Hitler and vegans. That does not make Vegans Nazis.

I'm not here to defend Peterson's views. If you think what he said was racist....I don't agree...but I think it's a reasonable contention. (I'd be sooner to consider it ethnocentric than racist...people DO immigrate to middle eastern countries so Peterson is wrong)

He's interesting enough, and he has some valid criticisms of political correctness and the way the 'far left' might try and control speech, etc. But he also pushes back on that to the point of being fairly dismissive of movements like BLM, and i feel like he take a couple of leaps too far in a lot of the discussions I've heard. A lot of what he does is take the most extreme examples of groups like BLM or Gay/Trans rights groups and paints those people as the norm, and as broad representatives of a particular group. I don't know if he's doing that to intentionally be a dick, or if that's just his particular world view, but it feels less than honest at times.

He's also a favorite for people who use terms like 'Cuck' and 'SJW' so you're dealing with that level of intellectual appeal. I don't think he personally rides with those fools, but they way the co-opt his message, or the ways in which their messages might align, makes him kind of hard ride for too hard.

He's not dumb, and he's worth listening to at times, but i wouldn't hold him up as someone who has figured out some kind of higher truth that we should all admire and look up to. You gotta listen to him critically and filter out what's good and what's some bullshit that's been colored by his world view.

Gotta keep in mind that he works on a university campus. So even though I agree with some of his critique of the social justice movement....he tends to overstate it's presence. Probably because he is exposed to the most extreme elements of it everyday. When I see a really out there SJW on the net or something...I'm more likely to take it with a grain of salt. It's only a small percentage of the trans community that's on board with the university campus activists.

BLM is a good example. The loudest voice of the Toronto faction of BLM is a melaninist theorist. Not enough for me to dismiss the whole movement. Perhaps enough for someone who is only exposed to the loudest, most extreme voices.

and to add: some of his rather inept low-information followers can't or won't process either his context or his principles. I can take him to task on specific things he says, but he says them in a precise way to avoid being the worst of what he gets accused of. he means well and isn't what the alt-right think he is. but he's coasting on their stupidity by speaking on a small % of an illiberal left. it's a hustle - and he isn't "that dude".

Like Denny said, he's a University professor, so he is much more likely to only be exposed to the extreme examples. Also, the extreme ones tend to be the loudest.

Sure, BLM can be co-opted by those who simply want vengeance against white people, but that's not the point of the movement. He talks extensively about Man's need for meaning and purpose in a modern society that isn't supported by religious belief (and frequently brings up Victor Frankl's novel about the Holocaust) and the remedy to nihilism and I see BLM as an extension of that. BLM originated in a blog post from one Black person to another letting them know that their life matters. The discrimination and oppression that Black Americans face can cause hopelessness and nihilism and BLM is not only an activist group but a tool to combat the assault on the esteem of Blacks. One can use the movement to swirl around in a sea of victimhood but it's much more often used to transcend victimhood and attain a sense of pride needed to succeed in society and "climb the dominance hierarchy" as JP would say.

I'll shoot him an email and suggest he reads Coates' "Between the World and Me" because it touches on some of the same points as "Man's Search for Meaning" and "The Gulag Archipelago", two books he frequently mentions in his lectures.
