It's been too long since I've seen him as a guy MC's might not want to try.

At this point I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than get my hopes up and be disappointed yet again.

And yea, that Comm's been gone for over a decade. "Hungry"-era Comm was at his peak and prime (c) maxxx lyrically then. The perfect balance of what he was before and what he became after. And that's OK. He was young and a much different person then.

But, like you touched on, he's hungry as fuck still and still has BARS. It just ain't quite as potent as it once was, and again, that's OK. He's older now but he still spits better than 90% of the new acts out there.

the ONLY skippable song is Love Star, but everything else is on par with ODIAMS, LWFC, or Be. Easily Com's best album since Be. Very pro black, very very lyrical, and simply great beats. There's no way any Common fan can sleep on this.

And I love every song besides Love Star like you do.

But anyway - my only gripe so far with these tracks is , like someone recently said in another Common post I think in the Lesson , that his flow is still just a LITTLE off on some beats. "Home" is the best example. Because the beat is fucking BANANAS, his lyrics are fucking BONKERS, but he still sounds like he's fighting against that beat a little bit. It doesn't even come close to ruining the song or anything crazy like that. It's an amazing song. But at times he sounds like he's struggling to get his lines to fit the tone and pace of the beat.

"Hungry"-era Common, that we were speaking about above, never had that issue. It may be just cause he's trying his hand at different sounding beats now, whereas in "Hungry"-era he was only rhyming over the paces and volumes he was comfortable with. But still, it's there.

Edit: I need to learn how to read. Carry on. Glad to hear you love it cause it sounds like you're as big or a bigger Common fan than I am so I'm even more excited now.

i thought FF was very good, but not great. I thought UMC kinda sucked. I thought TD/TB was very very good. I thought Nobody Smiling was good, but uneven at points. This album has me hyped like i haven't been in years.

As for, ODIAMS, it has some higher highs, but the sequencing always kinda sucked for me. nothings bad on that album of course, but i've always felt it should have been so much better. iono, i'm just more as hype for this album as i am listening to that album. but, i should note, i think they're both on par with each other.

FF has some really great moments (I still listen to "Start the Show" so often ... that quintessential Common song dissing nobody but dissing everybody shit, I love) but was the epitome of star-gazing. All the Hollywood name-dropping makes me want to puke. But it's an album I really like outside of a couple absolute bombs/duds. UMC doesn't exist as I said. TD/TB is excellent, again with 1 or 2 missteps. Nobody Smiling I agree about. Very uneven but Common was still dropping bars. My main complaint with that album was the style of production.

Haha yea you and everyone else here has that same sequencing gripe. I really don't, and I don't even really understand it all that much. It's my personal favorite just because it's Common at his very best, his prime lyrically IMO. His flows were unbeatable and he had that perfect balance of his own brand of wordplay (which many have run with since) which was building off of Resurrection, and the socially conscious stuff that would dominate his work thereafter. I just found his particular brand of lyricism to be so endearing to my ears. Loaded bars like "verbal vegetarian, squashed beef with Ice Cube" will never stop blowing me away.

Don't mind me, I'm just jealous. I do have a cool half-story of my own though. I got to go to his release party for Be, shake his hand, and chat for about... I dunno, a minute?

Then I got to talk to peanut butter wolf, which was cool in theory but he was kinda cool for school. Madlib was there but dead to the world.

I watched the Be DVD recently. That was a great look into Kanye and Comm's work on that album. Would've loved to have been around at the time like you were. I love that album. Wore that shit out the first few months after its release.

I didn’t expect anything from him but I was surprised at how insular he was. He just sat there in one spot most of the night and didn't really talk to anyone. They weren't off in a secluded section or anything, they were right in the mix with everyone else and ML was just kinda there.

I posted about it at the time and someone here said he’s always like that.

I thought EC was dope, but dude got scared and regressed. Then the corny movies and "Peace, Love and Gap." Haven't listened to an album from him since.

Meanwhile, mad shit is sounding like EC now.

New album probably has some heat, but his image is tainted. Kinda like Nas with that "Hate Me Now" wackness... I never really checked for dude after I saw him wearing a furry hat in the club.

..., Comm is only of my two all time favorite MCs. But I feel like the toughness of the beats, the bars he' spitting, the political commentary, etc...are all the EPITOME of everything I've always loved about hip-hop. You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not listening to this album when it drops, no matter how you feel about his post-Be image/marketing BS/acting/whatever. He's still an MC's MC through and through.

just don't love music, and there's nothing wrong with that, but that's the truth. lots of artists have bad periods, or drop a dud, but if you truly love music, you don't give up on them. i read some dude on here say he gave up Nas after "Hate Me Now," and all i could think was "do you realize how much great music you've not heard?" This album fits right in with all the great, pro black albums we've gotten recently, from TPAB, to Black Messiah, to A Seat at the Table.

I like to pretend UMC doesn't even exist so I can understand people not liking that album. But I just canNOT understand someone giving up on an artist that has otherwise provided SO MUCH CLASSIC MUSIC just cause of one or two bad outings.

I seriously wonder if he might make a run for the album of the year. He's kinda got the perfect set-up here. The extensive collabs/producers....the timely political message....all of us golden age hip hop heads entering our 40's....the additional co-sign from the Obamas.....the white house performance.....and doing the theme song for the critically acclaimed '13th' which addresses the MOST significant social justice issue of our times. This album might have Grammy written all over it.

Plus the table was set for someone to really take the reigns of a new sort of adult-contemporary hip hop album format somewhat similar to 'Miseducation.....' and it sounds like Common has seized that opportunity. We're seeing an absolute flood of hip hop documentaries on established media outlets....the origin of hip hop is starting to get the same treatment that Woodstock and the like was getting in the late 80's in terms of cultural recognition. Perhaps the NWA movie and it's success has sparked that. But everytime I turn around nowadays there's a new mainstream hip hop doc or series. Not sure if it's hitting in America but HBO Canada has a mini-series called 'Hip hop evolution' which has 4 one hour episodes so far. I guess we're old enough to want to reflect on our youth now and hip hop seems to be taking center stage.

or Kanye for rap album....ya' know, the acts who sell a lot of units. Common will probably get nominated just to lend credibility to the category, but when it comes to rap acts, it is those who have sold the most. If Common can have a single that is far reaching like he had with "The Light", then maybe.

Think the last album I was really hyped about pre-release was PRhyme. And that one MORE THAN lived up to expectations and I wore that joint out for like 6 or 7 months straight. Hope Comm's album does the same, and it sounds like it definitely might. (random thought: I really, really wish he stuck with "Little Chicago Boy" as a title)

This summer I wore out Coloring Book for like 4 or 5 months but I wasn't really anticipating it pre-release like I did PRhyme and am this Comm album. So kinda not the same thing. Just saying that would be the only other album that I played pretty much non-stop over the last 2-3 years.

57. "My funny ass Common story."
In response to Reply # 0

First time I met Common was at the million man march. My boy tapped me and said, yo... it's common sense. I didn't hesitate. This is back when I was in college promoting shows so I had no fear of walking up on rappers and chopping it up. Would usually find a way to get contact so we could send beat tapes. (Yes, tapes).

I screamed out "what up Common" and dude walked through the mud to give me dap. He was in camo gear, I was in camo gear... we were ready for war that day. Lol

A few years later after he was dating Badu he had a show at the 9:30 club with De la soul. We just left a freestyle battle and my boy from Richmond was in it and he was pissed because he got lurked in the 2nd round. White dude who was DJ told us there was an open bar meet and great at the 9:30 club so we rolled over there and sure nuff common is chillin with De La.

We didn't have tickets to the show so my boy asked me to talk to common to see if he could get us in cause it was sold out. I go over and give him dap and this dude had on crochet pants and a tight ass shirt with rhinestones on it and he gives me the softest dap in the world. Total 180 from the MMM. Common tells me there isn't anything he can do but to stick around cause we might be able to get in through the bar downstairs.

Now mind you it's an open bar. We are slow sippin beers and don't even realize our boy who lost the rap battle is slamming back Grand Maniets (sp). I go to the bathroom, come out and a bouncer is in front of my boy trying to give him water. In 30 minutes dude went from sober to sloppy drunk. He takes the water bottle, pours it over his head then throws the bottle on the ground and it splashes on the bouncer. The bouncer picks him up like a sack of potatoes and walks him out next to the concert line and sits him on the curb. Common and them we're crying.

The whole time my boy is shouting out his rap names (dude had a new name every week). The white DJ does like white people do and says well, I'm going back inside. I didn't drive all this way to not go to this show. My boy drove his new car there so we can't leave him. He is swinging on us, just sloppy...

Had to drive all the way back to Richmond, drunk... high... and dude is in the back seat throwing up in his new whip but I wasn't pulling over because we were fucked up and 95 ain't no joke. We get back to Richmond and eventually we had to call the medics cause dude wouldn't stop throwing up and dry heaving.

My roommate documented the whole thing on film. Cops came with the EMT, looked at dude and said.. shit, I was this drunk last night.

White DJ told us the next day that he walked up the steps without a ticket to the show and the t was off the chain. Smh...

We told Jeru about commons fashion choices and dude said "yeah, he always wants to come to my hood and hang out in NYC but I tell him "No funny hats, you can hang but nooo funny hats, these cats will rob you" I asked him if cats really robbing rappers in his hood. Dude says "Guru (rip) gets robbed every time he comes to my hood... prolly been robbed 5 or 6 times already"

End of story.

I'm so behind this shit I'm lost for words.

I don't know about y'all....I love my kids, I love my teens...and I love watching them having their own culture and sounds. But I need mine too. I'm sensing there's alot of others who feel the same way. I've never been one of these 'hating the new generation' type of people but there's something new sinking in with me....I need MY music that I grew up with. And I'm sneaking in some new Common Sense the next time we have a birthday/bbq.

BTW....the album version of this song is an interpolation of Tribe's use of the one-off rhodes phrase in Minnie Ripperton's 'Inside My Love'. I'll always be a music nerd. I remember listening to Resurrection almost everyday for an entire summer when I was 17. To think that a fringe rapper that me and my 5 friends were worshipping at that time would be the dude he is now? I'm just sparked.

I don't have kids yet but everything else rings so true with me it's laughable. Maybe it's because I got engaged and married over the course of this time but this is the exact feeling I've had the last 2 or 3 years re: "my" music and the newer stuff. I will forever say that I respect the artistry of certain new artists and even dig some of it, but nothing compares to the music of MY time in MY mind. So all these 4th quarter releases from the heroes of my musical awakening got me, as you say, sparked as fuck as well. I'm so excited.

Haha yea it's pretty amazing. You nailed it. I remember putting people on to Common all through high school. And those people still love and appreciate him to this day. It's pretty awesome.

with that album was him trying to write from the perspective of a young black kid in Chicago now. Dude's 40 and couldn't really pull it off.

Dude wrote this from the perspective of wise elder and that's his lane now.

I don't really know that you have that right, IMO. I think Comm was still rhyming from his own perspective, a wise elder trying to advise those that are still where he used to be. I think the album's plethora of guest spots were his attempt to relate to the youth of Chicago as many of them were young Chicago MCs. But I think that Comm's OWN raps were very much from the perspective of someone who's been there, is wiser, and is just trying to give some advice.

May be wrong on some tracks, I haven't listened in a while. But that's how I always characterized it.

(1) Comm rhyming from the wise elder's perspective, and (2) the younger guest rappers rhyming from their own perspective. Which, even though I didn't love the album (mostly due to production) by and large, I still loved that approach and thought it was fresh and interesting.

Nothing. He made an album people didn't like. The critiques of the album are critiques of the album. How do you arrive at "what did he do to you?" as the response for people's dislike of the material?

>I even started a thread asking why
>but they deleted it. His windmills and acting caused a brand
>new level of hate.

No, a decline in album quality caused a decline in the positive reaction to that particular body of work.

and that's fine. It's their opinion...

But it wasn't based on hearing the album. It was due to him being a bad actor, doing windmills and being fake deep.

I'm just giving my opinion that shrugging off an album before it dropped was odd.

I could see if he was out the game for 20 years but Common has never been that bad of a rapper.

He also showed us on BE that he still got it when it's packaged correctly.

103. "How did Be show he's "still got it" when there were three albums between..."
In response to Reply # 98

And NS?

He had three albums worth of material to shape the way people would embrace NS, so you can't point to Be to say he "still had it" when NS dropped.

Three albums and nine years is a lot of music and time to form an expectation of the next album.

I just think the question "what did he do to okp" is a huge deflection from the fact the people have simply lost interest in his music.

Apparently she heard Love Song.

It was right before her ballet class so I couldn't play Pyramids for her then I forgot about it.

I can't wait to see the expression on her face when she hears it.

But Common is spitting quite hard on this album. You are quite correct, sir. Feels even better to listen to this since I've written him off from his prior works I wasn't feel to much. I'd love to know what got in Common's ass to make him spit like this since the stuff I've heard from him somewhat recent was pretty weak. Stellar return to form though; almost somewhat like how Sean Price and MF Doom got better latter in their respective careers.
