"Atlanta: Help! "

My niece is looking to relocate to Atlanta.

She will be working in Clarkston but wants to live IN Atlanta.

Where is the best place for her to live?

What is the typical commute?

Any tips for someone coming from small town USA?

I was on a bus years ago that went on the highway, so no stops for 10 minutes at least. This dude sitting next to me asks to borrow my phone, then proceeds to ARGUE with some chick for the next 10 minutes. I don't let anyone use my phone because of stuff like that.

I live about a mile from Clarkston. The big question is what's her price range, and what type of living situation is she looking for.

Clarkston is basically a straight shot into town, down Ponce De Leon Ave, DeKalb Ave., or Memorial Drive. There are plenty of great areas between Clarkston and downtown, such as Avondale Estates (my neighborhood), Downtown Decatur, Emory, Oakhurst, Kirkwood, East Atlanta...etc.

Price range is the key.

He commute should be a breeze since she'll be going against traffic.

The commute has been the biggest issue. As she's in Maryland, we're completely unsure of what to expect. Everyone has been adamant about living close to work, though.

She doesn't want to pay more than $1200 for a 1bdrm.

Any recommendations?

https://www.forrent.com/find/GA/metro-Atlanta/Atlanta/neighborhoods-Toco+Hills

Search Druid Hills, Emory and Briarcliff

She's be 15 minutes from downtown, and 20 minutes from the job, going down N. Druid Hills Dr. or Clairmont. She wouldn't have to deal with the expressway. Close to shopping and service. A bit of a suburban feel, however.

If she wants more of a city living vibe she could go a little further west to Lenox Park. That's closer to where all the action is, although a few bucks more and maybe 10-15 more minutes on the commute.

But it is on the complete opposite end of the city from where the poster is looking for. I wouldn't wish a west end to east end commute on anyone. The only thing worse would be a north to south commute.

I assumed that the commute is okay as long as one doesn't need to get on the highway. At least that's how it is here.

Every thing kind of radiates from the middle in Atlanta, so there's no direct east to west, north to south routes without using the expressway. You have to navigate to the middle, then navigate to your destination. It's that middle that can jam you up.

No real easy way to cut it other than taking Ponce all the way out, and even then, you're hamstrung by whatever is happening in midtown and the litany of schools heading through Decatur.

It's less than 10 miles from Atlanta. I define both as OTP (On The Perimeter). Living in Dekab County could be an option. Chamblee, Stn Mountain, Tucker, North East Atlanta.

also, the only thing in Clarkston is Churches, liquor stores and a ton of middle eastern people. Never would imagine a job in Clarkston would relocate someone.

good luck

-Near a major economic metropolitan area so they can get work
-Relatively cheap to live
-Close to public transit
-Municipality that welcomed them with open arms

WABE had a piece a few weeks ago that it may be hitting its tipping point and they will start to relocate new families to another suburb, with Tucker or Covington being the current target.

And its not just one group. My friend coaches the Clarkston HS soccer team and it's the most interesting collection of students you'll ever find. And no, it's not "bad", just really foreign. Paranoid white people and the "old Clarkston" folks like to play up high crime, low property value, whatever, but that's all sort of BS and the refugees mainly just want to find work and stay here so keep a pretty low profile. For the most part, they are all from war-torn parts of the world, so lots of Burmese, Bhutanese, Sudanese, Eritrean and Somalis, some Syrian and Iraqis.

If she wants to live IN Atlanta, it would be best for her to live in
the Emory area or any part of east Atlanta (Inman Park, Reynoldstown,
Hosea Williams side of Kirkwood (not memorial dr side lol), etc.)

Clarkston is a small eastern suburb beside stone mountain.

Some folks are throwing out a lot of Dekalb county neighborhood/city names and, as a Fulton county/CoA resident, I wouldn't consider that "living in Atlanta". Depends on how deep in Atlanta she actually wants to live. If she wanted to live intown intown, I would recommend places along the Memorial corridor near East Atlanta/Grant Park right now, because that's going to be the NEXT neighborhood and she's likely already priced out of other east-side neighborhoods. Commute out Memorial to Clarkston isn't that bad, about 25 minutes or so.
One thing I always recommend to people moving here for the first time is get your first place in a safe and somewhat affordable building, then just get to know the city and figure out where/what you want out of it. Never sign for longer than a year out the gate.

that are near the lingering pockets of bad shit OR they are near I20 or 75/85, which make them easy targets for in-and-out quick robberies. Not that it is a rampant thing happening all the time, but it's happening. If she can go a bit north of that budget, downtown Decatur is about the safest and most friendly OTP area that would also still be within manageable distance to Clarkston. Or something older but in a good, quit community, like this: http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_rent/Atlanta-GA-30317/house,condo,apartment_duplex,mobile,townhouse_type/2101296412_zpid/71037_rid/33.788403,-84.282067,33.772012,-84.305134_rect/15_zm/

Or get a roommate. The days of Atlanta being an affordable place for a single renter are pretty much over for now, thanks to the film industry and spike in millennials moving here.
