"What city neighborhoods are Black folks investing in?"

What city neighborhoods *should* we be investing in? I'm talking about where are we building the *next* well-to-do Black neighborhoods (buying houses, condos and multi-families; opening businesses, schools, etc.) Seems like we have a lot of educated, relatively well-off Black people in the US nowadays. One thing I've noticed is a dearth of 'up and coming' Black neighborhoods that are in the city. Seems like black folks are either still fleeing to far-away suburbs, or spending big $$$ to rent in 'trendy' areas.

So what's the next Harlem, U Street, etc.?

West End was 3.9% white in 2010. 10.57% white in 2014. The Beltline is a mofo.

There are a few right outside the city (like Laverock/Cheltenham), but inside the city I don't see Black folks with money flocking to any particular area. It sucks because there are some great deals on houses and some neighborhoods with great bones, but we're (apparently) not taking advantage.

I was thinking about this Spike Lee rant about gentrification in Fort Greene: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/02/spike-lee-amazing-rant-against-gentrification.html and wondered what are we doing NOW to build communities.

Frustrating that it seems like we have to start over every generation or two, instead of being able to build upon success or the generation before us.

and we still follow the paradigm of moving out of the inner city into a nice big house when we get a chance.

The places being gentrified are minority neighborhoods but those of the means to actually stay will just sell and move not realizing how much money they left on the table for themselves and ultimately their children. I can't blame them; its hard to see the diamond in the rough if those streets just bring out dead ghosts to you.

There's also the problem that many of those cities that are getting gentrified they've kept those minorities firmly under the boot. Milwaukee's undergoing it's own gentrification and is 40% black Yet you have articles like this...lol.

http://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/03/05/390723644/why-is-milwaukee-so-bad-for-black-people

And flare ups like we saw this weekend.

I feel that I see it playing out in the Bronx as everyone gets priced out of everywhere else in NYC and that becomes the next battleground. You've got working class residents that have been trying to get things popping for decades but the powers that b frown and they are unable to get loans/tax deals for new businesses, etc.

However a fresh gentrifier is going to have an easier time getting a mortgage and less red tape setting up shop there.

Philly's quickly becoming even more polarized than it was before. The new hipster/yuppie transplants to the city are basically creating neighborhoods FOR THEMSELVES (and not for the locals). New businesses are springing up, but the existing black and hispanic (and white, tbh) residents seem to be largely locked out of this.

I'm hoping we can start using the tools we have available to start networking and building strong black neighborhoods around the country. I think we all can imagine how things will turn out if we leave it up to chance.

I'm not talking about 100% Black neighborhoods, btw, but I would like to live somewhere that I don't have to be made to feel like "The Problem (c)" every time I leave my house, but also not have to worry about being robbed every time I leave my house.

Since the current class of yuppies pride themselves in their lazy man multiculturalism. A good black restaurant, live music venue, etc...could bring in that same clientele like you see in Harlem now.

I was at a house party with a bunch of artsy neo-boho types and started a convo with a youngin who just moved to BK from Philly. She made it seem like Philly was a just a huge clan of meek mills and she escaped to bedstuy(as if we don't have our own knucklehead problem), lol.

Meanwhile earlier that same week I read an article about how white creatives were leaving NYC and thriving in Philly.

There's gotta be a middle ground in that disconnect.

of NYC artist moving in due to the cheaper rent

in Charlotte we have a lot of black businesses but they are mostly on the west side and it's mostly restaurants and bar/clubs.

a few clothing stores and boutiques but mostly barber shops and food.

4 out of 5 Black youth live in povert.

OKP is quick to say Blacks are doing well because we went to college and made a few friends and we have decent careers..

the reality is most Blacks are still in poverty or real close to it.

Are there a lot of homeowners in those hoods? What are some of the better ones that would attract newer Black residents with wealth?

Philly has a lot of 'middle class' Black neighborhoods, but there's not much stratification among the Black folks in those neighborhoods. We end up with folks with families and good jobs living on the same block with shiftless black folks and that shit starts to wear on you after a while. This is a big part why the "escape to the suburbs" mentality still persists around here.

I understand my folks are scared of change (even MSU is starting to get pushback), but there's no reason that the black side of Northwood down Hillen to 33rd can't equal or come to close to what's in orginial Northwood property value-wise AND add amenities to make that area more attractive.

only real affordable housing left on the east coast as far as a urban environment goes...is philly and bmore.

everything else to get a 2 bdr, 2 bth starter type spot in a decent neighborhood...300+ if not much much more

300 will get you into SE DC.

maybe the bronx?

but yeah.

that ship has sailed. we are abt to make the suburbs hot in the next 20 yrs. all this shit is cyclical.

on sabbatical.

does it really matter?

wonder what bin's doing?

Did a lot of the owners sell over the years? Or were they basically tenants the whole time? It's frustrating that it seems we're not really anchored in many places, and get moved on out as soon as the tide changes.

I'm worried that the suburbs will be "hot" the wrong way when a lot of us end up pushed out to the less desirable ones.

There's a lot of opportunity in Baltimore and Philly, but it's frustrating seeing black folks complain about the neighborhood and what it lacks (and then move to surrounding suburbs), while at the same time the white folks are moving in and completely remaking neighborhoods. Kensington and Point Breeze (north and south Philly, respectively) are shitholes yet white folks continue to move to those places in droves because they are building something.

I wish we'd start doing something similar.
