Not acceptable, but I wouldn't move my car after shoveling it out
Jan 25th 2016
1
I am not even going to dig my car out. I just won't drive for a few week...
Jan 25th 2016
2
Yup. I've seen lazy neighbors drive OVER the snow...
Jan 25th 2016
5
And this is *precisely* why I support the practice in the right situatio...
Jan 25th 2016
8
Here's my thing, not only can you not claim public property, but
Jan 25th 2016
3
Yup
Jan 25th 2016
6
Complete/utter bullshit.
Jan 25th 2016
4
I support it if the work necessitates the dibs.
Jan 25th 2016
7
I'm in this camp
Jan 25th 2016
12
Don't understand it...once you move your car, it's fair game.
Jan 25th 2016
9
Here we go yo (Scenario):
Jan 25th 2016
10
hell yeah i'm heated.
Jan 25th 2016
11
What is the point of doing this?
Jan 25th 2016
13
Right, if they were able to get out of their spot, what benefit is it to...
Jan 25th 2016
18
Y'all ain't no fun.
Jan 25th 2016
19
But yeah, some folks literally drive over the snow out into the street.....
Jan 25th 2016
35
Hmm...8've never seen that but yeah that we piss me off I suppose
Jan 25th 2016
45
It's the same point as speeding ahead of someone just to be in front
Jan 26th 2016
127
I'm shoveling snow back onto their car. I'm covering their ride up n/m
Jan 25th 2016
29
Done that before.
Jan 25th 2016
87
I have never expected the spot to be there once I'm gone.
Jan 25th 2016
39
Because everyone should be parking in the spot they worked to clear.
Jan 25th 2016
22
You didn't work to clear a spot, you worked to get your car unstuck
Jan 25th 2016
23
And have somewhere to come back to.
Jan 25th 2016
24
           but it's not yours
Jan 25th 2016
27
In my case it actually is mine.
Jan 25th 2016
30
If it's your spot, then the snow is irrelevant
Jan 25th 2016
31
It's not ridiculous. It's called an emergency scenario.
Jan 25th 2016
42
This is the 1st time i've ever heard stay out the neighborhood
Jan 25th 2016
46
The question is what reason do you have to be there.
Jan 25th 2016
48
Reason is irrelevant...is there a travel ban?
Jan 26th 2016
101
It's irrelevant to you because you don't have one.
Jan 26th 2016
112
bc i;m gonna get some ass is a reason
Jan 26th 2016
113
I know you want to argue for the sake of arguing...
Jan 26th 2016
114
Well no, i'm arguing bc i'm right
Jan 26th 2016
115
                                                             You're entitled to your opinion.
Jan 26th 2016
116
Dude, you have an assigned spot.

...to get out of their minimally-shoveled spot (still like 8" of snow/ice on the ground around their car) just to drive 30 feet to pull into a cleanly-shoveled (down to the asphalt) spot that their neighbor spent 90 minutes clearing out.

Contrary to what you may think, you did not dig out that parking spot. You dug your car out because you wanted to move it. You did not create a parking space. Now, if you walked up to a snowbank and dug out enough space to fit a car, with the express purpose of parking there, then you can say you dug the spot out.

In other words, don't do what 5 of my neighbors did in Boston yesterday and today and put a parking cone/chair in a spot you spent 30 seconds combing over with a broom. We got 2 inches and half that snow already melted, and these assholes are claiming spots. I so badly want to throw their spot markers in my trash but the collateral damage that may cause for the poor saps who park in those spots thereafter make it not worth it.

If we got 6+ inches and you spent an hour on your spot, yea I have no real issue with claiming it. Especially after the events of last winter.

Anyway my neighbors are useless assholes.

You spend 90 minutes shoveling out your whip (parked right in front of your house, btw).

After you're done, you decide to drive to a gas station to fill'er up. Trip to the gas station and back takes 30 minutes, tops.

You get back, and the neighbor ONE SPOT DOWN from you car has moved their car into the spot you shoveled. You see that they did the minimum possible to get their car out, and in order for you to park in that spot you now have to shovel some more.

You not gonna be a little heated about that?

To one bc it's more shoveled?

Second, I aint moving my car out for a 30 min trip unless it's urgent. I get gas before the storm but besides that, I assume parking is gonna be hard when I get back home, henceforth I ain't moving unless I have to.

People that want to own parking spaces should buy houses with garages or driveways

...they maybe do a little kicking/shoveling, but the bare minimum. So, they really didn't shovel the spot out, they just managed to get their car out. When the snow inevitably freezes, that spot is now a mess of tire track-shaped ice "hills" and the packed-down (now) black ice that they drove over to get out. When it comes time to park again, it can be a pain in the ass to basically park on ice, so they jump into a spot that's already cleared.

Maybe it's a dense city thing, but there are mad folks that will go out and move their car to another, better spot just because they are outside and they see that can.

The only thing I expect (all year round) is for ppl to leave room for other cars when they park. Space-saving of all kinds is foul imo. Selfish. The only reason I got to shovel out my spot in the first place us because I was lucky enough to have that spot before the storm. I don't get to claim that shit indefinitely now. Nobody should.

I live in a neighborhood where the parking spaces are assigned. So even on a normal day I can have your shit towed.

But in the case of neighborhoods with "public streets", wanting to slide conveniently into a spot in front of someone else's house where they spent time and effort clearing it, knowing they will need to return at some point, just makes you an asshole.

Like I said, stay in your neighborhood. And if it is your neighborhood, go back to the spot that you cleared until conditions are back to normal.

It's really that simple.

At a time like this, what reason do you have to be in my neighborhood other than if you have a family member in need of help? To chill?

The streets are fucked up as is. So you being where you don't live is an inconvenience to the residents as parking is already limited.

And if you DO live there, you have no reason to park in a space that someone else spent time clearing, unless by chance that space is in front of your own house.

I mean, what are we really talking about here?

What if it's an elder, 50+, that lives there. Is it really "fuck him" he needs to park up the street instead of in front of his own house where he took his time and cleared the spot? Really?

This isn't about law, it's about being considerate.

It's fucked up in Baltimore right now.

Side streets are fucked. Limited space, etc. etc.

So other than trying to rescue a family member, what's your reason for journeying to my block at a time like this?

How is the person jumping into a space that someone else dug out of LESS inconsiderate than someone who just wants to park in front of their own damn house?

I'm not talking about an apt building or some shit. I'm talking about someone's own damn house, where they shoveled from their own door all the way to the street and around their car, and now have to park up the block.

Am i going there to kee kee at your jacked up streets. If not, i'm free to go there if my business or pleasure desires me too.

Me parking on the street is less inconsiderate than you holding a spot because its a PUBLIC PARKING SPACE. You do not own that spot. If having your own space was that important to anyone, they should have made a purchase that came with its own space.

And again, if you and your neighbors have that understanding and consideration between ya'll that's one thing. But you can't expect an outsider to not only search for a parking space, but one that isn't in front of someone else's house as well lol

Which means you would be causing trouble for no reason.

And that's the point.

There's no good reason other than a family emergency to go into someone else's neighborhood remove a chair where THEY shoveled and park in front of THEIR house causing them to have to park farther away.

So you think it's okay to blatantly inconvenience someone else just because you have the "freedom" to.

but there's obviously a reason why you wouldn't do it.

It's because it's unnecessary and morally wrong even though it's legally permissible.

We're talking about 2 ft of snow here.

So causing someone to have to dig through 2 feet to get to work just to come back after a long day and dig thru another 2 feet (farther away from their home) to park again, just because some jerk felt it was okay to park in front of their house where they shoveled is inconsiderate as fuck. Period.

And the reason i wouldn't move someone's stuff is bc i don't want to get shot like homie in boston. PEople are crazy...it ain't that serious.

But if there is an available spot with no dibs items, how do i know which house corresponds to what spot? If the house has a driveway, but the spot in front is shoveled out too, is it theirs or is that one ok to park in? Do i ring the homeowners bell and ask permission?
What if there is a shoveled spot, not directly in front of a house? Is it okay to park there, bc someone clearly shoveled it out. I don't see a name, but maybe its theres? IDK?

ALL OF THAT IS RIDICULOUS. Too many dumb unwritten rules.

Again, if you want to OWN a parking space, buy a house with one. You bought a house with PUBLIC PARKING. As long as someone is part of the public, they are allowed to park there.

In a neighborhood where everyone has a spot, why in the fuck would you even think about taking a space that you didn't shovel out? You know who does that? Lazy fucks who can drive over the snow, head out, then come back and say, oh look no snow in his spot let me park here.

No! Go back to that got damn spot you was in before and shovel it out and stop being a lazy fuck.

People in this post want it one way, but it's the other way.

and they still can't grasp the concept of hours. Like me for instance, it took DAYS to even be able to move forward, like I really couldn't even leave my neighborhood until a few hours ago, been here since Friday. At this point fuck your rules about how you hate dibs, I'm calling dibs and whoopin ass.

In response to Reply # 53

Many of us live on streets where parking spots are not plentiful. Some of us share our street parking spots with ppl who frequent local businesses or services. Some of us compete for parking daily. Some of us would love to be able to save a spot everyday but we can't unless we purchase or rent a spot in a paid lot nearby. So the idea that suddenly we can save a spot on one of these public streets is foul. It's inconsiderate. It's against public policy. It's bad business. It's not nice. It ain't right.

fuck you.

In many of the neighborhoods I'm referencing personally, there's an unwritten show of respect where people should be able to park not that far from, if not directly in front of their own house (most times it's directly in front of the house). And people in the neighborhood come to respect it (that's Ms. Johnson's spot).

So to go through the trouble of digging out of that spot only to come back and find someone has claimed it (which in this case involves deliberately moving a chair or cone), is cause for a fight.

Ride is right in front of my crib

Saturday spent a few hours dug the spot out, still couldn't move because the streets were not plowed yet, so I chilled, that's right -©Oren "Juice" Jones

Sunday morning I wake up, the plow comes through and pushes a mound of snow back in front of everyone's car, another few hours shoveling. This time its a tad bit warmer out and the bottom later is ice. Still, I Rise - ©Maya Angelou

Monday, Today, same situation. I can't go to work, cats is getting stuck leaving out the community. I go back out, and we are all shoveling yet again, this time trying to break through even more ice. Just to get out of a GOT damn spot. Each day takes hours, you have to walk each shovel of snow quite a ways away just to dump it cause its no space to really place the snow that's close to you.

At this point, I wish a mothafucka would.

I hear what ya'll saying. What I'm sayin is, I might fight a nigga over this spot I spent this long digging out. This is some slave shit at this point. I's done broke my back long enough and I's caint take this shit no mo! I would honestly beat a niggas ass if I asked them to move and they didn't because I spent the ENTIRE FUCKING WEEEKEND digging out *eyes twitching*

Don't even try to talk sense into me either, this is my spot, AND YOU. CAN'T. HAVE. IT!!!

If its an inch or two then whatever. We got over two feet of snow, add that on top of the snow the plow pushes up and what do they do to it? They dump it to the side to add on to the two feet that was already blocking your shit in. Add in the snow drift.

Cats already heated that everything they did one day was negated by an ignorant fuck who was hired to plow and did a fucked up job. We no trying to hear that "its public property" bullshit. Catch a shovel upside your head with that mess.

And yea - the two inches bullshit is beyond me, too. Not only did you not work for your spot when you "shovel" after a two inch dusting, but you're also quite literally putting a spot saver in a huge empty space. Like, you're not saving anything. You're just making sure you get a high quality spot when you get home, and therefore being a total and complete asshole.

I fucking hate my neighbors man.

working on that shit so I can go out and get some food for my family or whatever, and come back and you're there for more than a few minutes, you're on some fuck shit. Period.

Once the streets are back to normal it's whatever, but while neighborhood parking is still at a premium it's best to stay in your own neighborhood (unless you have an emergency with a family member).

Old nigerian dude I helped, I did 90% of the work. LMAO when I was done he tried to hand me $20. I was like naaah

I had to go meet someone and the next train was 20 minutes so I took the car. Came back and my spot was still there, but I decidded to see if I could find one closer to my house. Nope!

By the time I drove back my original spot was now being moved into...I drove by my house and dug out a partially cleared out spot , parked and Kept it moving.

I know im in the minority but I really dont understand the hate for shoveling snow. I wasnt ding shit else but sitting in my house on a sunday. This was a great chance for me to get a nice workout in, meet people, and be a good neighbor.

Major snowstorm, I got out early in the AM, thoroughly shoveled out our building's driveway, and then proceeded to shovel out every damn car parked on the street, so when they came out, I could say "I did that, you're welcome, everyone is allowed to park here, yall didnt have to do anything, so no space saving"

True fucking story. Because I've never claimed a space that I shoveled out. Fuck that.

And did you do that every storm thereafter ? If not, were there space savers in every spot after every storm thereafter (assuming you live in a neighborhood where that is commonplace) ? I bet there were.

This is a failure to understand property rights.

Public property is illegitimate, and ultimately unowned, because the government resorted to extortion in order to gain "ownership" of it. The Lockean theory of property rights involves taking resources and mixing your labor with it to gain ownership over previously unowned property. This is what occurs during large snowstorms. You are homesteading parking spots.

yes I live in California and we dont get snow. But there are 2 houses that are being rented out to multiple renters on my end of the street. Im pretty sure they are students. But its like 5 of 6 people to a house all with their own cars. Even though every house has a 3 car garage and you can fit 2-3 more cars in the drive way they all just park in front of everyone's house. Shit is fucking annoying. When I have company over they have to park 5 houses down because these assholes use up all of the street parking. First it was leaving out our trash cans so they couldnt park. But one neighbor put up cones, then we all bought and put them out. It took about 6 months but now they leave our spaces alone. Assholes.

but if lived in that area i might holler at the local council rep (or som'n similar) about the situation and suggest some parking permits be issued to homeowners/renters on the street. that's the move here in Chicago and in other cities/towns where street parking is limited. local governments prefer that solution b/c it avoids self-help like this dibs b/s. and it avoids retaliatory vandalism where ppl rightly ignore that dibs b/s.

see the thing though is parking isnt limited. Like I said every house has a 3 car garage and a big enough drive way for 2-3 more cars. But when you got a home owner and 4 of 5 college students renting a house then it becomes a problem. It aint as serious as retaliation if someone moves the cones though. I mean this is an extremely white area. The most that would happen is a harshly worded note on the windshield.

Granted I don't have a car, so for right now I don't really give a shit.

In my neighborhood in south Philly there are lots and lots of tiny streets The street I live on is wide enough for cars to park on one side and normal sized vehicles to still get thru. The city has smaller trash trucks for these blocks.

When it snows these blocks NEVER get plowed. It's just not gonna happen. So today on my block multiple people banded together to shovel out the street for part of the block (which means the sidewalk is impassable on one side of the street). In a situation like that I'm all about having dibs on those spots. People were out there for hours shoveling.

South Philly is already the wild west for parking. The city turns just turns a blind eye to it.

It may not be good etiquette at all, but you don't own public property, so you run that risk of losing your parking spot whether there's 2 feet of snow or 85 degree weather.

That's all well and good, congrats, you're a bad ass. Run across the wrong mother fucker though and this happens. I'm not saying its right, but when you say fuck it and start moving someones stuff you have to think first if this person is stable in the first place, and are you willing to deal with the consequences if not.

A few inches of snow you can have my spot, fuck it I can dig out another one. I spend hours or days digging out, nah homie, that's mine for at least a few days.

>RE: lol exactly only unstable cats is 'saving a space'

Wrong. You move into a neighborhood where this is tradition and standard practice, you'll be saving a spot too if you want to park within 100 blocks of your place when you get back. If you choose not to and deal with that, that's cool. That's your choice. I choose to take part in the tradition to avoid unnecessary hassle.

I agree with everyone saying it's not right, you shouldn't have rights to public property, etc.....but the fact of the matter is that some neighborhoods adopted the practice long ago and if you move into the neighborhood and don't respect that, *you* are the asshole. That is life.

but how do you know who's a visitor and who's not, you know what I mean ?

Obviously it sucks for a visitor who unknowingly parks in some neighborhood guy's "spot" but short of, like you said, hanging signs with the unwritten rules there's really no way to make outsiders aware of the neighborhood's practices.

That's why I said it's flawed. There's no easy way to manage street parking in snowy areas. In a perfect world everyone would have drivways/garages ha but that's just not reality.

parks in 'your' spot that you have a mutual understanding with bc he's your neighbor, you can have a convo with them about it and hopefully resolve it peacefully.

If you someone parks there who is a visitor and there is no mutual understanding between the two of you, they aren't doing anything wrong and you have to park somewhere else or deface their car and then park someone else (if that's how you get down)

I don't see the difficulty. I certainly understand the annoyance but that is life when you don't own a parking space. Actually, I don't personally see the annoyance, I regularly have to park a block away from my crib bc parking can be tight at times. Ideally we wanted our own driveway but this house had other amenities that we decided to forsake our own spot.

It's difficult because people move all the time, you may live in a big neighborhood, people get new cars, etc. So it's tough to flawlessly navigate who's a neighbor and who's a visitor. Also if you live in a large neighborhood, it's difficult to memorize who owns/drives each vehicle. So knocking on a door, "talking to your neighbor" may not be quite as easy as you're trying to make it seem.

That's what I meant by "difficult"

which is why it should be done away with.

instead ppl should be fucking grown-ups and accept that unless they own a spot on some private property or some government has reserved a parking spot for them on a public street/lot, they don't have a dedicated parking spot. and that means they'll be inconvenienced at times. such is life. be a grown-up and deal. don't like it? do som'n about it. like - buy a spot somewhere or buy/lease housing that has some sort of dedicated parking spot(s) in a garage or driveway or lot or carport, et al.

the fact that the police are familiar with the suspect insinuates that they know there is more involved that just a parking space but the parking space was the straw per say. As mentioned above, you never know who you're dealing with and what they are dealing with so proceed with caution.

In my neighborhood, we have two assigned spots and then there's a "visitor" spot. We have 3 cars, so I use the visitor spot for my van.

Instead of digging out all of the cars, we dug out my van and I'm going to take my wife to work until I dig out her car (mainly because we had to sacrifice her car for the snow because some neighbors were bitching about where we were putting the snow).

Me and my next door neighbor cleared the shit out of our spots the other day. Clean.

I took my wife to work this morning, come back and the neighbor across the street was parked in my spot. Her spot isn't as clean as mine, so she must have left out, came back, and conveniently pulled into mine while I was gone.

I was going to straight block her in, because the main parking lot would still be passable. She saw it and immediately came out and said "Hey babe, I'm going to move it."

Simple.

where I park my van and they know damn well I shoveled that spot, while she and her husband kicked back and let a teen do a half ass job on theirs.

#2 - If it was a visitor I would do the same shit because it's fucked up around here right now and there's nowhere else to park. My only recourse would be to a) Park in someone else's spot who also left or b) park all the way out on the main road that's only partly plowed, both options compounding the issue. The other visitor spots are filled with the excess snow or by other neighbors who also have 3 vehicles.

So yes, a visitor would have had his/her ass blocked in.

"Now yous can't leave".

That's why I say visitors should wait until the situation is normalized.

In response to Reply # 0

In general, at all times, it is difficult to park in my neighborhood. There are many times when I want to go the supermarket or grab something to eat, and I don't. I don't go because I don't want to lose my spot. If I do go, I accept the fact that if I go I am not going to get my spot back, and I might have to park blocks away from my house. And what happens if I dig out of "my spot" and return and some other car is there, am I not allowed to park after that? If I see a spot that is open, I should just pass it and go shovel out another spot or park blocks away from my house? I would get this way of thinking a little more if you lived in a neighborhood where everyone knows each other and there are lots of places to park. But in my neighborhood, how would I even keep track of who parks where and what their car is and who dug out which spots? What is the time frame I should work with? You just own that public spot until all of the snow melts? If you don't want to lose your spot, don't move your car. It's an unfortunate part of living in the city, but that's the way it is.

thankfully the law prohibits 'dibs' and when it's enforced (like when city sanitation crews remove and dispose of the various chairs and other crap used to save spots) the dibbing ends.

the city of Chicago will look the other way on 'dibs' for like the first couple of days after a heavy snow event. but then it's over and the city sanitation crews are directed to remove and dispose of the various items ppl use to reserve parking spaces.

b/c ppl feel entitled to go around vandalizing private property thinking they'll have some support in court.

hint: they don't. there's no dibs exception in the various statutes that criminalize vandalism of someone's property.

even in Boston - if i park my car in a spot someone else 'reserved' via dibs and they call the police and ask that my car be removed and/or ticketed...it ain't happening.

also, if the person who 'reserved' that spot vandalizes my car i can go to the police w/that complaint. if the police investigate and find proof that proof can be submitted to a prosecutor who may file a criminal charge. AFAIK the law doesn't provide an exception to a criminal damage of property charge to honor dibs-related vandalism.

fuck you.

I'm trying to find the actual policy. I believe it states that the city will allow you to use your space saver for up to 48 hours after the storm. What that means is that they will not throw your chair away and charge you with illegal dumping. If someone else moves your space marker, they have the legal right to park in that spot.

that boiled over into the alleged vandalism.

so the complainant goes to the police claiming that they're husband's babymama keyed they car b/c she mad about some bullshit. the police go look for the babymama to find out if she'll talk. if the car was parked in an area that's covered by surveillance cameras they'll try to get video footage. they'll knock on doors of nearby residents asking if they saw anything. they'll take photos of the alleged damage and any thing else in the immediate area that might provide clues. among other tactics.

not necessarily.

again - i regularly represent ppl who have been arrested for and criminally charged w/vandalizing other ppl's cars. and the complainants don't always have proof of who did the vandalizing. they often suspect a particular person or group of ppl and they report that to the police who then investigate the allegation.

b/c if it's just about 'sweat' then the person who dug their car out would later just park in some other spot that's been cleared so they don't have to dig their car out twice. but as seen in this post, most of the concern is about having a spot that's convenient as opposed to avoiding labor.

But .... jesus I can't believe we're still doing this.

How about this. You go to someone's home. When you enter the front door, the person asks you to remove your shoes. You refuse, and stomp around that person's house with your shoes on. You are an asshole. There is no law about taking off your shoes when you enter a home. But you are a fucking asshole. And you are inviting a punch in the face. The person punching you would "legally" be in the wrong, but according to general common-courtesy and how one carries himself day to day, you are a flaming, insufferable asshole.

The same general principle applies if you move into a neighborhood with generations-long, well-established practices that are not "law" but that were established by the inhabitants of the neighborhood, as a community, to establish some sort of order in said neighborhood. You move in and decide to ignore those well-established practices. That is your legal right, and your choice, but you are an asshole. And you are inviting vandalism to your car from the neighbors who established these practices long before your obnoxious ass stepped foot in that hood. The person keying your car is "legally" in the wrong, but you are an unbearable asshole.

Now I understand this is not an apples to apples comparison, because in the first example the person "owns" the home. But in a way, the members of a neighborhood/general community "own" that neighborhood....if you're not an asshole.

I have no idea who started it and when. What I do know is that if I move into a neighborhood, and they are taking part in that practice, I will partake, too. If they are not, I will not either. I admit to possibly overstating it with "generations-long" as that wouldn't apply to every neighborhood, of course. Just saying, if you move in, and they are in that practice, and you choose to move spot savers and take people's spots, you are an asshole.

Anyway - I covered your second point so...yea.

Edit: let me be clear, again. I in no way support the "spot saver" tradition on general principle. Were I to create a neighborhood and create my own ordinances, that type of BS would have no place. All I am saying is that if I move into a neighborhood where they have decided to take part in that practice, I am following suit. You should too.

When I was in Boston, it was pretty much only Southie and JP that did that. Since then, it's spread to other neighborhoods. It's not a generations long well-established practice, it's assholes spreading that shit under threat of retribution.

It's just an courtesy thing.

If its an inch or two or three I know I'm not trippin. I will, and have, just move to another spot shovel it out quickly and park there. That's not the issue.

I believe the issue comes from the OVER 2 feet of snow and the hours it takes to remove that snow and whatever else is piled in front of where you normally park. I get its a public space, it's also in front of someones spot that normally wouldn't care who parked there, the amount of snow just changes things.

Had this lady who worked her ASS off this weekend, she finally could get out on Sunday evening to get her young kids. They were 10 minutes away driving distance. She comes back and someone else went smooth in there. Someone who didn't care to shovel anything. They had a big ass truck and could have just rolled over shit to park in front of their spot they were too lazy to dig out. Homegirl lost it when she saw this. They saw her anger and promptly moved after trying to argue over it for a minute.

It's THAT shit that makes people do things like this.

>But .... jesus I can't believe we're still doing this.
>
>How about this. You go to someone's home.

more like...

i go to a public park. b/c our whole point is that we're talking about public streets owned by no particular individual. 'someone's home' is a privately owned space.

>The same general principle applies if you move into a
>neighborhood with generations-long, well-established practices
>that are not "law" but that were established by the
>inhabitants of the neighborhood, as a community, to establish
>some sort of order in said neighborhood. You move in and
>decide to ignore those well-established practices. That is
>your legal right, and your choice, but you are an asshole. And
>you are inviting vandalism to your car from the neighbors who
>established these practices long before your obnoxious ass
>stepped foot in that hood. The person keying your car is
>"legally" in the wrong, but you are an unbearable asshole.

my head just exploded thinking about all of the generations-long, well-established practices that were or were not 'law' but were established by the inhabitants of a neighborhood or other community that are fairly abhorrent but were intended to establish order. so forgive me if that argument falls completely flat w/me. b/c it does.

>Now I understand this is not an apples to apples comparison,
>because in the first example the person "owns" the home. But
>in a way, the members of a neighborhood/general community
>"own" that neighborhood....if you're not an asshole.

but they don't own the streets in that neighborhood and they need to be disabused of the notion that the public streets can be treated as private spaces on which they can enforce some right of ownership or entitlement.

fuck you.

And I support doing away with the practice altogether. The question is how to go about that. Because in a city like Boston where it's well-established for at least a decade (longer in Southie), it seems like a tall-task to start playing vigilante especially when people are getting fucking stabbed and shot over it.

188. "the various mayors of the cities where dibs happens"
In response to Reply # 184

need to be better about directing the various city departments to refuse to honor dibs. like, tell the sanitation crews to remove those items from public streets immediately - as soon as they're discovered. get on tv and let the citizens know that public streets don't belong to any particular person w/o regard for how much labor they put in to clear snow from a particular parking spot for whatever reason. enforce the various criminal statutes that prohibit vandalism of ppl's cars.

^ these are the reasons folks generally can't and don't 'reserve' spots on public streets when there's no snow. right? there's no good reason snow should change that situation. i understand the arguments for dibs but none of them are persuasive. the response is always 'too bad so sad get over yourself'.

fuck you.

So in the meantime, while I'm waiting for a mayor that will take such a stance, I'll just continue to ensure that I have a parking space when I get home, just like everyone else in my neighborhood.
