"Headbangers Ball: Groove Metal Recommedations"
Thu Dec-17-15 04:10 PM by PROMO

i'm a johnny come lately to metal. been exploring a lot of different stuff but definitely find that groove metal is what i enjoy the most.

thus far, my 3 favorite groove metal albums are:

Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
Slayer - South of Heaven (Slayer is more thrash i suppose but this album is very groovy IMO)

so...if you're familiar with any or all of these albums, throw me some recommendations of albums to peep whether it's the big dogs or your brother's metal band who toured your parents garage every weekend.

some of the passages are more outright trash but it's still got groove; it's basically a 'metal supergroup' where they play within the metal/punk genre's that inspired them, great record that came out a few months ago.

Metal where there's more of a...well groove...seems to be more in sludge metal nowadays...groove metal has kind of fallen out of favor.

you can google it, but i guess the way i would describe it would be the guitars tend to play more repeating "riffs" so that there's sort of a "groove" to the song.

i'll peep your suggestion.

groove and metal do NOT belong int he same sentenace and anything by pantera is most emphatically NOT a "groove"

that's any genre.

i dunno. my attention span is too short. i get 3 or 4 mins in and start thinking about how much longer the song is and start skipping tracks.

i did check out all of the albums though. enjoyed that first artist you posted the most.

so good. Anselmo had the perfect voice for their style. RIP, Dime Bag...his solo on "Walk" is one of my favorite ever and Vinnie Paul stayed in the pocket on drums. Great group.

but since i've gotten into it i've listened to a lot of metal albums across a lot of metal subgenres (including pirate metal - it's a real thing and if you want a good laugh check it out), and to me Vulgar Display of Power is the best metal album i've heard.

everything about it is damn near perfect to me.

Shit goes. I also got the Roads to Judah (on clear vinyl, que fancy) and it's not nearly as good as sunbather and new bermuda, but it's a good addition to the catalog.

I had seen their new album Meliora, on a best of list so I randomly copped it for my niece for Christmas.

then I listened to it on Spotify and really liked it.

I asked her if she liked them and she was a fan, so I got lucky because I took a shot in the dark w/ that one.

not sure how I'd describe them...maybe like a really good metal band who at times sees another path in their song that takes them for a short trip into Shins-like musical musings?

anyway, I really like the album. good metal when it's metal (which is MOST of the time, honestly) and definitely original.

I'm more of a doom / stoner / death guy myself but I saw anthrax, cavalera conspiracy, and primus listed as groove metal bands, and i like them all, especall primus. How Suicidal Tendencies doesn't make it on there I have no idea. Oh and Faith No More. I can't open another window to look up songs and jog my memory but hers a few from different artists.

Primus best list:
John the Fisherman
Sgt Baker
Too Many Puppies
DMV

Faith No More:
Woodpecker From Mars
Falling to PieceS
Epic

Anthrax:
Stand or Fall
AIR

S/T:
You Can't Bring Me Down
We Are Family
Institutionalized

Newer bands that are 'groovy':
Intronaut
White Widows Pact
Elder

this is my niece, who is 15, and has been playing guitar for only 3 months without lessons, playing me Pantera's "Fucking Hostile" for Christmas. i got her the new guitar and amp for Christmas but gave it to her around Black Friday so she could get better and practice. She worked on practicing this sporadically for about 2 weeks. she even tried the solo but she just hasn't learned the techniques to pull it off correctly yet.

she's the reason i got around to exploring metal, so as you can imagine i'm super proud of her. to come this far in such a short period and do a decent cover of a fairly tough song w/ not much practice? can't wait to see where she's at in a year or two.

Especially the first two albums. Nola and Down II. Phil from Pantera and Pepper from Corrosion of Conformity form the "super band".
