I dig it.

Once her album drops, she's gonna get the look that Jazmine Sullivan should be getting

Who is the last female artist to be hyper-sexualized by someone other than themself?

Like you really think NO ID is about to tell this 19 y.o. white girl to jump in a bikini or something? lol

Yes she is...

"The industry" is a retarded catch all term.

The music business doesn't work like it used to. There are barely A&R's looking over your project. You basically are work-shopping with your team on your own and come in with finished product. They package it and sell it.

ESPECIALLY at Def Jam since NO ID is fostering those "indie" ideals.

Are there managers/producers forcing some upstart female artists to be sexier.. almost certainly... But you see how quickly those fail

"Sexy" w/o purpose doesn't work. You can be an IG model for that. You cannot dethrone Rihanna in the "sex pot" dept. Anyone who does fails.

lol...

If you watched the movie you realized Momager was the one pulling the strings...

EDIT: You do realize I am in the industry everyday.. for a living.. friends with and work with female artists..

The pressure IS there.. but it's often times a larger societal ideal of what a female (entertainer) should be...

beautiful female... on screen.. what you should be about is the male gaze..

Point is... Alessia's success is based on being a bit of a tomboy and outcast with great songs about being a tomboy and outcast.

Suggesting she be hyper sexual would go against the entire brand they are building

Here and Four Pink Walls are obviously the two main standouts.

Not a fan of 17 (Reminds me of r&b version of Taylor Swift's song about being a teenager).

Outlaws is ok (typical bonnie & clyde track. would have liked this more if she kept it oblivious as to gender ONLY because I think this would make a damn good "Thelma & Louise" type video)

I'm Yours is ok (her singing reminds me of Avril Lavigne)

So that is my problem. Here is an amazing song...but there is no other Here type track on the EP. Four Pink Walls is great. Everything else reminds me of someone or something else. So it disappointed me a little to have such an original track and then everything else sound *typical*.

But I'm still checking for her. I feel like Def Jam probably picked tracks they THOUGHT would pop off instead of letting her be.

that's specifically why I compared it to that Taylor Swift song (which was called "15"). It was wildly successful. The song doesn't suck, it just isn't for me and has no replay value for me. Production wise it's dope. Lyric wise, it's teeny-bopper. And I think Def Jam did that for a reason. That song has great potential to pop for her. Overall the EP is solid, but to me, it's for a younger crowd. Whereas Here had more cross over appeal. But truth be told, had I heard 17 first, I probably wouldn't have checked for the EP at all.

I mean she is 19..

She still is a teen..

I think older people connected with Here because of Portishead/isaac hayes nostalgia.

I know that Steve Bartels is still all about 'Here' so it's gonna keep getting pushed for a while. At least until they see what the data is saying about the EP. Like what other song people are playing.

i was told that she wrote the song after a party when she was 15 or 16, so it seems to me that the production was secondary. so how it sounded when she wrote it, how she originally envisioned it.

"mindie = major + indie" is the new story that the media likes to tell of random person with random great song just falling into success because the internet is SO powerful...

When the whole time they were signed to said major that they eventually "announce" they've signed to later.. see: (lana, lorde)

the "big on youtube" move is also a new thing I see people using because most people dont follow cover signers on youtube so they'll never know either way..

Good songs cut through (especially when a major can help) and it doesnt matter where they came from... so it's kinda dumb that they do it to begin with
