I dig it.

Once her album drops, she's gonna get the look that Jazmine Sullivan should be getting

12888432, Promising. "Here" is nuts. The others on the EP show mad promise
Posted by DVS, Thu Aug-27-15 12:53 PM
I hope Def Jam doesn't hyper sexualize her.

12888433, Four Pink Walls is dope too. Just edited the original post

Who is the last female artist to be hyper-sexualized by someone other than themself?

Like you really think NO ID is about to tell this 19 y.o. white girl to jump in a bikini or something? lol
12888549, so are you saying the industry doesn't push female artists to be
Posted by KiloMcG, Thu Aug-27-15 02:38 PM
sexualized or hyper-sexualized, that it's all on the artist?

and is she white?
12888566, italian.

Yes she is...

"The industry" is a retarded catch all term.

The music business doesn't work like it used to. There are barely A&R's looking over your project. You basically are work-shopping with your team on your own and come in with finished product. They package it and sell it.

ESPECIALLY at Def Jam since NO ID is fostering those "indie" ideals.

Are there managers/producers forcing some upstart female artists to be sexier.. almost certainly... But you see how quickly those fail

"Sexy" w/o purpose doesn't work. You can be an IG model for that. You cannot dethrone Rihanna in the "sex pot" dept. Anyone who does fails.

12888612, ^^never watched "BEYOND THE LIGHTS^^ nm

lol...

If you watched the movie you realized Momager was the one pulling the strings...

EDIT: You do realize I am in the industry everyday.. for a living.. friends with and work with female artists..

The pressure IS there.. but it's often times a larger societal ideal of what a female (entertainer) should be...

beautiful female... on screen.. what you should be about is the male gaze..

Point is... Alessia's success is based on being a bit of a tomboy and outcast with great songs about being a tomboy and outcast.

Suggesting she be hyper sexual would go against the entire brand they are building
12888838, you take everything so seriously

lol.. my bad yo..

snark meter musta been off..

12888847, aiight, i feel you.
Posted by KiloMcG, Fri Aug-28-15 08:57 AM
but you do agree that the pressure exists to be sexy, and i agree that that also comes from a societal level and not just from within the business.
12888544, I really like her but I don't like all of her songs...
Posted by StephBMore, Thu Aug-27-15 02:31 PM
Here and Four Pink Walls are obviously the two main standouts.

Not a fan of 17 (Reminds me of r&b version of Taylor Swift's song about being a teenager).

Outlaws is ok (typical bonnie & clyde track. would have liked this more if she kept it oblivious as to gender ONLY because I think this would make a damn good "Thelma & Louise" type video)

I'm Yours is ok (her singing reminds me of Avril Lavigne)

So that is my problem. Here is an amazing song...but there is no other Here type track on the EP. Four Pink Walls is great. Everything else reminds me of someone or something else. So it disappointed me a little to have such an original track and then everything else sound *typical*.

But I'm still checking for her. I feel like Def Jam probably picked tracks they THOUGHT would pop off instead of letting her be.
12888572, RE: I really like her but I don't like all of her songs...
Posted by double 0, Thu Aug-27-15 02:56 PM
imo Seventeen could be a 'bigger' song for her than Here though
12888582, completely agree...
Posted by StephBMore, Thu Aug-27-15 03:00 PM
that's specifically why I compared it to that Taylor Swift song (which was called "15"). It was wildly successful. The song doesn't suck, it just isn't for me and has no replay value for me. Production wise it's dope. Lyric wise, it's teeny-bopper. And I think Def Jam did that for a reason. That song has great potential to pop for her. Overall the EP is solid, but to me, it's for a younger crowd. Whereas Here had more cross over appeal. But truth be told, had I heard 17 first, I probably wouldn't have checked for the EP at all.
12888618, RE: completely agree...
Posted by double 0, Thu Aug-27-15 03:49 PM
I mean she is 19..

She still is a teen..

I think older people connected with Here because of Portishead/isaac hayes nostalgia.

I know that Steve Bartels is still all about 'Here' so it's gonna keep getting pushed for a while. At least until they see what the data is saying about the EP. Like what other song people are playing.
12888623, teens will love her...
Posted by StephBMore, Thu Aug-27-15 04:00 PM
they buy music, she has great potential. and yeah Here probably is that whole nostalgia thing. I wonder how it sounded originally.
12888630, RE: teens will love her...
Posted by double 0, Thu Aug-27-15 04:11 PM
What do you mean originally? Like on guitar?

Pop Wansel produced it.. his thing is flipping old 90s samples for Pop & R&B consumption anyway...

See new Tory Lanez record flipping brownstone or J Lo record flippin TROY/Tom Scott
12888635, RE: teens will love her...
Posted by StephBMore, Thu Aug-27-15 04:20 PM
i was told that she wrote the song after a party when she was 15 or 16, so it seems to me that the production was secondary. so how it sounded when she wrote it, how she originally envisioned it.
12888657, RE: teens will love her...
Posted by double 0, Thu Aug-27-15 04:54 PM
yea.. I think she plays guitar so it could've easily been an acoustic demo until it got "produced"
12888835, You're totally right. Title track and Here are the totally standouts.
Posted by lightworks, Fri Aug-28-15 08:37 AM
I wonder if they rushed these songs to capitalize on the Here fame
12888552, Heard Here on benji b's show months ago and loved it but...
Posted by Seven, Thu Aug-27-15 02:41 PM
When I saw my daughter and her tween friends learn the lyrics by heart in about an hour and were singing it all weekend a few weeks ago...I knew right then that she's bound to be a problem
12888557, Fallon had her on about a month or so ago
Posted by RobOne4, Thu Aug-27-15 02:46 PM
he mentioned at the top of the show that her song came on spotify and he hit up his music booker and said get her on. They were like but she has no album coming out no pr team nothing. He said who cares she is good get her on. She went on and killed. Good voice and I like most of her songs.
12888575, RE: Fallon had her on about a month or so ago

lol.... oh the "mindie" ruse....

still works
12888837, What's the mindie ruse?

12888886, RE: What's the mindie ruse?
Posted by double 0, Fri Aug-28-15 09:41 AM
"mindie = major + indie" is the new story that the media likes to tell of random person with random great song just falling into success because the internet is SO powerful...

When the whole time they were signed to said major that they eventually "announce" they've signed to later.. see: (lana, lorde)

the "big on youtube" move is also a new thing I see people using because most people dont follow cover signers on youtube so they'll never know either way..

Good songs cut through (especially when a major can help) and it doesnt matter where they came from... so it's kinda dumb that they do it to begin with
12888561, I dig her lil EP.
Posted by lightworks, Thu Aug-27-15 02:48 PM
12888583, I liked her until I really settled into 'Here', and there is...
Posted by Mongo, Thu Aug-27-15 03:01 PM
...literally one line that turned me off to her

"...and listen to some music with a message (like we usually do)..."

That shit was so pretentious it hurt
12888586, Her one song is ill. I'll probably not listen to anything else she makes
Posted by IkeMoses, Thu Aug-27-15 03:05 PM
but Here is dope, overused Isaac Hayes sample or not.
