"Hubby & I now drive for Uber & Lyft. #lovinit"
Wed Jul-22-15 02:55 PM by Damali

It definitely helps to live near a major train station and a major airport. (Newark)...we've been driving for about a week...he likes doing late at night. I'm probably just gonna do a couple hours during the day at a time..we share the same car (for now)...best part time job ever.

anybody have any experiences to share? what city you driving in? all the research says that DC is the best of them all...

granted, there is no mechanism to tip in the Uber app. Hubby did get 1 cash tip from some guy w/kids for being very entertaining to the kids during the ride...

but in NJ, we get far more ride requests from Uber than Lyft. Lyft is not that well-known here yet

meaning, the drivers are taught not to expect them and the passengers are told its "not necessary"

so i'm not thinking about tips when i'm driving for Uber

short answer: you are not a dirtbag you don't have to tip unless you really truly feel compelled. even then, we are told to refuse first, and only take it if you insist.

But that's good to know. I guess if they are paying you right, than tipping should be extra and not something you are depending on.

The next week, my boy told me they were secret shopping the secret shoppers lol

hubby is averaging about $25-$27/hr because he drives during more of the "surge" hours...

not bad for a part time gig these days, i'd say

we also try to be strategic about where/when to drive to maximize the time we're spending

i'm looking strictly at paychecks. some other people do this whole wear & tear + gas + taxes + etc etc and be crying that they don't make any money

i personally don't look at it like that because i'm going to be using my car alot whether i drive for Uber or not. when we could afford it, we were driving into NYC almost every weekend, paying tolls to visit family 1-2 hours away, driving to restaurants and spending money..etc

so to me, i'm saving money by using my car to make money...and i'm still gonna do all that other stuff, but a little less frequently.

out of doing Uber.

It's not for everyone. I'm going to try it but it's not like I'm quitting my job to do it.

It's extra income for me and if I can make $15 to $20 an hour vs $12 then it's a win.

if you are trying to determine whether or not to take on a business venture or new job, any wise person is gonna do a cost analysis. Certain things are really easy to figure out, uniform, travel expense etc...others arent like wear and tear on your vehicle.

but to say a statement like

>>>i'm looking strictly at paychecks. some other people do this whole wear & tear + gas + taxes + etc etc and be crying that they don't make any money

is easily not seeing the bigger picture.

I said if I weren't driving for Uber, i'd be putting miles on my car anyway because my NJ lifestyle means i gotta drive to do fun stuff...i'm active and never just sitting at home..i'm driving to six flags, to NYC (and paying to park & eat there + tolls), driving to PA and South Jerz to see family...out and about...spending on tolls and food etc

me driving passengers means i spend less time doing those things, but pretty much the same amount of time and gas driving around

so FOR ME (read: for me), the gas, taxes & wear & tear are negligible. that's my cost/benefit analysis and it's sound.

oh and 1 more thing: there's considerable income in recruitment. anyone that signs up from my link and drives for 10 days..i get $200...which would cover weeks worth of gas. AND anytime i have to drive someone to NYC (which is very close to me) i get an extra $20. that pretty much covers all expenses for that whole day, just from that one fare.

the math works out quite well as far as i'm concerned.

stop defending what you do lol

you said 'other people cry about blah blah blah.'

That's what i was explaining in the first place. Why other people worry about gas/wear and tear etc.

if your only options are uber or drive to six flags etc than do you.
I'm talking about the quote you made in reference to other folks.

is that how you signed up?

I thought about it for a sec... If I had another car, I would be all over it

I was more concerned about all that mileage being put on the car

i guess i don't understand why there's a mileage concern if the car is being used to make money...

and he signed up first, then "invited" me, so once i take 30 rides, he (read:we) get a $200 bonus!

in the toll on your car. You will need to buy a new car sooner now that you do lyft/uber. So that 22 an hour might be more like $19, $20,$21 an hour at the end of it all.

Is it a reason for you or someone else not to do it...no, but it is a legit concern generally speaking.

I couldn't see on average how one wouldn't be able to either purchase another vehicle to replace the one being used as an uber vehicle or to be used as a personal vehicle only. Plus when you factor in whatever you may receive should you trade in your Uber car. To me it looks like more pros than cons.

bottom line is if you use your car for a business its going to have more mileage, more wear and tear, and the upkeep is going to come around quicker and you are driving down the value of the car.

Whether you trade it in, resell it, have a new car, old car whatever is all immaterial.

If you are using your own vehicle for business that is an expense that is coming out of your pocket whether you realize it or not.

Its why business pay mileage when you use your personal vehicle for work purposes. It covers gas plus the use of your vehicle. My company currently pays 57cents a mile.

I plan to start next week once I'm approved. I'm thinking about doing a Thursday through Sunday shift after work for a few hours.

I'm still a little skeptical of picking people up after the bars close at 2AM. I don't want no people throwing up in the ride.

at least 20. sometimes more. the more you drive in peak/surge hours, the better, i'm sure.

haven't told them yet, so I don't know LOL

>I keep hearing after has and maintenance of isnt that much but

We already drive alot anyway so I really don't see it being that much of a deal. In the first week, we've used up an entire gallon of gas, which would be about $30. But if we weren't driving people around, we'd be out and about, driving to NYC, to go see relatives, to go have fun...etc. So we'd be using that gas anyway.

it all depends on your lifestyle and when you drive...this is a true hustle in that each person has to figure out how to make it work best for them

i'm planning on purchasing a second car and using Uber to pay the car payment.

Uber has insurance that covers you in 3 phases: while you have the app on, waiting to be contacted by a passenger; while you are on the way to pick up a passenger; and while you have a passenger in the car. the coverage is different depending on what phase you were in when the accident happened. therefore, they pick up where my own personal insurance would leave off.

they also pay a cleaning fee if a passenger damages your car (i.e. vomiting)

the convos happen organically, because the natural first question is: how long have you been driving for Uber? or do you like it?...

i'm also pretty intuitive so I can sense when someone doesn't want to talk. the teen girl this morning had her headphones in so i left her alone. teens usually aren't interested in convos w/adults anyway

but i definitely still treated her well..made sure to open the car door for her etc. i'm confident she gave me 5 stars

I work at night and could make a killing picking up folks right after i get off since im already downtown. I live a good 10 min away from the airport so i could just post up around there during the day. I feel like I need to get a new car first though. My current car is 7-8 yrs old. I keep up with the maintenance so it's still in good shape, but it just doesn't feel new enough lol especially compared to the Ubers I've rode in.

The one driver that sold me on it said it was best to just get a Black car because you get paid more.. I guess I should just try and let them tell me no...I'm pretty sure my car is too old though. I plan on getting a new car some time in 2016 so I guess I can wait.

you'd be driving for UberX so you don't need a fancy car...do that for a while, then see if you feel like you really need to upgrade to an UberBlack vehicle

oh and my referral code is: S25GX4HPUE

but seriously...perhaps there's alot of folks signing up in your area...or the counties where they have to get information from, about you, are slow in turning it in?

are they sending you regular updates on your background check?

but I'm still waiting for the official approval.

I wonder if NJ needs drivers more drivers so the process is faster

I'm in D.C. so the red tape is probably crazy plus a likely surplus of drivers. I'm glad to see many of us trying to take advantage. I have a feeling the getting won't be good forever.
