""Justified" S5 Post"

Back for a fifth time. Hyped as usual.

What to expect:

Jere Burns aka Wynn Duffy is now a regular. Hell yes.

Michael Rappaport is possibly the season's "Big Bad" as Daryl Crowe Jr., brother (or cousin?) of Dewey. I'm pretty sure they've mentioned him in past seasons.

Other guests in upcoming eps include: David Koechner, Wood and Steve Harris, and Amy Smart.

And that's all I got. I'm a little worried about Rappaport playing a Southern villain, but the show has pulled off casting against type many a time.

I mean, it's still got Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins, so that's a win.

And I hope we see more of Raylan's wife this season.

florida redneck seems like a perfect role for him, and this show always kills it, character-wise.

I was re-watching some S4 episodes last week, and realized I have the exact opposite reaction at the end of a Justified episode as i do to an episode of SOA lol.

11. "I'm going put this in here: Thoughts on the "Raylan" novel"
In response to Reply # 0

I'm a huge Elmore Leonard fan (R.I.P.). Have been so for over 15 years now. He published this book in 2012, but I didn't read it until after Season 4 was over and before Leonard died.

Don't read this if you're planning on reading "Raylan," which I wouldn't recommend anyway, but that's kinda not the point. This is just me reflecting/babbling on the relationship between the book and the TV series. I'm kinda long-winded here, so skip if not interested.

I'm reading the book, and familiar story-lines start popping up, and I think to myself, "Oh, interesting, Leonard's providing his own take on the episodes that the 'Justified' writers created." But then stuff from Season 4 starts popping up, stuff that couldn't have been written or filmed when Leonard was writing this. Which seemed weird.

I finish the book, and they've got an "Ask the Author" interview with Leonard, where he explains that he wrote the book because show creator Graham Yost asked him too, and he constantly sent his notes/chapters to Yost while writing. As a result, "Raylan" reads like over a dozen episode or character pitches for "Justified," many of which they ended up using.

Here are things (that I remember) that "Justified" used that were originally conceived of in the book:

- Raylan living above a bar and acting as the bouncer to pay rent

- The organ thief doctor/nurse practioner arc

- The female coal company executive how comes to Harlan to strip-mine the county

- The town hall meeting about said coal mining operation (just about all the dialogue during appears to have been lifted from the book)

- The rough sketch of the Bennett family; it's the Crowes in this case, although Dewey had already turned up in previous Leonard novels.

- The "wise beyond her years" Loretta and her pot dealer father.

- The gang of meth-head prostitutes who also rob banks.

- The fugitive who sends Raylan a video-taped challenge and the subsequent bar showdown.

- The hot U. of Kentucky grad student who Raylan has to protect.

I will say that in just about every case, the "Justified" writers improved on all of Leonard's ideas. In some cases, vastly so (see: the Bennett/Crowe story). But it made me feel some sort of way, and I'm not sure why. I'm certainly no stranger to TV shows that are adapted from novels, but it just felt... I don't know... weird that Yost had Leonard to write an entire book just so that he could take the best ideas from it and turn it into serialized TV.

I don't know, maybe I'm just rambling here.

13. "It's really one of his worst novels."
In response to Reply # 12

As a rule, when Leonard writes a "sequel" due to the success of the movie version of his novels, the results kinda suck. "Be Cool" is the most glaring example.

Leonard is extremely hit or miss with sequels in general. Some of the "sequels" he writes do turn out to be his best books: "Rum Punch" (the basis for "Jackie Brown") was a sequel, and it's my favorite book of his. "Riding the Rap," the second Raylan Givens book, was also great. It was also turned into an episode of "Justified" in the first season. "Road Dogs" is essentially part 2 of "Out of Sight," but he waited close to 15 years before writing, and it helped.

In that it uses characters from both. LaBrava is one of Leonard's sleepers, BTW, if you haven't read it.

"Riding the Rap" isn't as good as "Pronto," but it's still really good. Very good at continuing to build the Raylan Givens character.

"Rum Punch" is a sort of sequel to "The Switch"; it's the first book with Ordell, Louis, and Melanie (the Bridget Fonda character). It's a slight, pretty-lightweight 200 page-er. "Rum Punch" is a lot better. "The Switch" finally got made into a movie this year, starring Mos Def, John Hawkes, and Jennifer Anniston. I haven't seen it; it might have ended up straight to DVD.

I just read Pronto unfortunately after Elomre's death, but was not sure I wanted to go on with the novels with the Raylan character or skip around to some of his other work with characters I am familiar with from the movies. Rum Punch was high on my list but I did not realize it was a sequel.

Thanks

And Rappaport is even worse than I could imagine with that craptastic accent. It's going to be a chore to take him seriously as a big bad, especially given how well the prior ones were played.

he's got the look down, and they way he tried to sell raylan a different version of how his pops died as if he was all tore up was pretty good. i'm hoping that it won't be too much of a distraction, but we'll see.

some fun guest spots (koechner and dave foley), whole lotta bodies piling up, boyd & duffy working together. pretty solid season premiere as whole.

one minor gripe was raylan putting down machado. other bad guys have tried to use raylan to do their dirty work in the past, so that just seemed like a rehash. seems the story would have been more interesting if machado took off after the accident and was a looming figure over the crowes this season. would give them yet another reason to leave miami. oh well.

Aside from everything that happened in Detroit, of course. Almost sad, the way they've built up the Detroit mob as this powerful entity that could get to anyone. Then we finally see them and they've turned into a small handful of crazies with a blowup doll room.

Also, loved Dave Foley and Will Sasso as the Canadians. I think this show has officially cast more comedians than Breaking Bad (and it somehow never seems like stunt casting.)

I agree all the Detroit stuff was gold. And it was good enough and well-plotted enough that the high body count surrounding it didn't bother me at all. Boyd saying Iraq was "like Detroit, but with better music" was another great one-liner.

Yep, hope they're back eventually. This show has no shortage of characters, but I'd like to see more of those two. "We're the other Canadians."

It would've been enough if the Cuban and the rest of the Crowe clan had been the only people they'd introduced in Florida, but they added the Haitan tour guide/gator-man, the corrupt Coast Guard, and Champ Kind, U.S. Marshall. Then with Boyd's, they add three now flunkies, the Tonin's lawyer, the Canadian Mafia, and Paxton's wife/widow.

I guess that's why I understand them whacking Sam Tonin and Paxton early on: the gotta attempt to clear some of the table to make room.

He's got a lot more going on. He's lost his dope connection, the Florida Crowes are coming to roost in Harland and will likely want a piece of his action (or to take over), and Dicky Bennett is a free man once again. Plus, he's got to deal with Ava and possibly the city slickers after killing the funeral parlor guy.
And teaming with Wynn Duffy is always a risk.

I love me some Natalie Zea but the baby story isn't that intriguing and I'm not sure what the Crowes will really add that we haven't seen before for Raylan.

Keeping the rest of the Marshalls around might be just as tricky. I almost wish they'd just make a spin-off with Art, Tim, and Rachel.

In response to Reply # 0

Six seasons is certainly a great run, but this is one of the rare shows where the seem to be able to generate story ideas to keep the party going.

http://variety.com/2014/scene/news/justified-will-probably-end-after-season-six-says-fxs-nick-grad-1201035286/

‘Justified’ Will Probably End After Season Six, Says FX’s Nick Grad
For a show boasting a heaping helping of southern drawl, the premiere party for season five of FX drama “Justified” had a decidedly metropolitan touch.

Following the Jan. 6 screening at West Hollywood’s DGA, guests headed to Sunset Blvd.’s chic RivaBella, where the buffet line stretched almost past the DJ booth.

The premiere carried its reverential moments, as season five of the Timothy Olyphant-starrer will be the first since the passing of Elmore Leonard, the scribe whose short story “Fire in the Hole” served as the basis for the series. Damon Herriman, who plays Dewey Crowe in “Justified,” told Variety that while on set for season five, cast members read small sections of Leonard’s short stories to camera, clips that will be laced into a tribute video for the writer. (FX has also lined up a 90-second tribute to Leonard to air during the season five premiere.)

“As Graham has said, they went to Detroit and Florida , the two very most ‘Elmore’ kind of locations, and they were excited about Elmore would think of the episode and very sad that he’s never going to see this season. But, he’s the inspiration behind all of this,” said FX prexy Nick Grad.

Grad also said that ending “Justified” after a healthy six-season run is “the plan right now,” though that could always change given the needs of the creatives.

“We like having shows that rate really well, and there’s an instinct that you want it to go on forever. But it doesn’t,” Grad noted. “Another metric that’s important to us is, ‘What shows are going to be talked about in the next 20 years?’ If you’re making a great, 80-hour movie, it has to have a beginning, middle and end. Going out at the right time is going to make your show last forever — we want to make shows that stand the test of time.”

Season five of “Justified” introduces a slew of notable fresh characters. For series newbie Michael Rappaport — a Gotham-bred thesp — adapting to the southern accent that the drama calls for meant a whole lot of country music.

“I listened to a lot to be as authentic as possible — Bobby Bare, Johnny Paycheck, Loretta Lynn. I never got into country music before this, so it’s like a whole new form for me.”

CA 2014: FX chief John Landgraf announces decision by showrunner Graham Yost and lead actor Timothy Olyphant

FX’s “Justified” will end after its sixth season, network chief John Landgraf announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Tuesday.

Landgraf said the decision was made by showrunner Graham Yost and lead actor Timothy Olyphant, and that he would have loved for the show to continue.

“It’s one of my favorite shows,” Landgraf said. “We talked about it a year ago and they felt that the arc of the show and what they had to say would be best served by six years, six seasons… and so I accepted their decision. We try as much as we can not to make business drive creative.”

Season five of the Kentucky-set cop show premiered on Jan. 7.

I was a little disappointed with the premiere, but this episode kicked ass.

-Harris Bros are badass, I hope they play a key role in this season and this wasn't just a guest appearance.

-Raylan taking over the mansion.

-Mara is scheming and has to now figure out how to play the situation with Paxton, Boyd, and Sheriff Mooney. I was suprised Boyd's guy didn't suffocate the Paxton in the hospital, it'll be interesting to see where that goes now.

-Loretta's plotting too. She was a great character and I hope she'll make another appearance this season. I'm also impressed by the actress, she was good before but seems to have gotten better.

-Amy Smart...eh, okay. Not too interested in Raylan's lovelife, hope they keep scenes like the conversation over wine to a minimum. I'd rather him go after Wendy, Rappaport's sister.

-I don't know why Art goes poking around in Raylan's business like that. I understand he's curious, but he doesn't really want to catch Raylan doing dirt like that, does he?

-Daryl Jr. touches down in Harlan. Still not sold on Rappaport as the lead villain this season, but him bossing Dewey around and trying to take over Boyd's operations will be fun to watch.

-Who stole Boyd's shipment? I'm guessing it was the Canadians, but I really don't want to see Will Sasso and Dave Foley play tough guys again. I know other people liked that casting it but it was so unbelievable to me to see them as intimidating leaders of a criminal organization, albeit a Canadian one. Maybe I've just seen too much MADTV.

Great episode, got me hyped for this season.

Not sure how much it tied into the tension between Wynn Duffy and and that one dude. I don't see Duffy letting insults about his 'cute little suit' slide. Plus I don't think Duffy appreciated Boyd giving those guys too much info. it obviously just came back to bite them

It's weird Art is investigating him tho. Raylan's been so dirty many times before its interesting how this might come up and bit him. I figure maybe they are setting up a plotline where he really gets in trouble? But considering the first two-three seasons had him -><- close to getting fired (and they even had fun with it season 2 where he couldn't shoot his gun) its an interesting storyline to bark up.

Also, woah at the 21,278 different storylines they slyly introduced in this episode.

it's always been a balancing act for him because he likes Ryalan on a personal level and knows he's so effective, but he's borderline criminal in his ways.

then there was that thing with Winona and the evidence money. Art lets a lot of shit slide with him, and he's low-key salty because he knows Raylan doesn't respect his authority.

^^^This right here is why I absolutely love this show. The writing is so crisp. It has such a bite but doesn't go overboard or take itself too seriously.

I loved all things Duffy in this episode

Boyd vs Florida Crowes, Cousin Johnny, etc...

poor Dewey. never thought i could feel so bad with a guy with "heil hitler" tatted on his neck.

lol @ Ava's lawyer

Mara is just ridiculously sexy

Amy Smart is shaky at best. criminal at worst. I've always had a thing for her, tho

another dope one. this show is Noir as fuck

The music sting during the double choke out and the way the final scene was shot both felt more like hokey horror films than noir. And Rappaport's accent was even more distracting this time around.

Beyond that, a great episode. Wynn Duffy is always great, Boyd has some great lines, Amy Smart is purty. It would be nice for Raylan to admit his issues with women although I did love the line in which he said he wouldn't call it a tendency and that he wouldn't have noticed had she not brought it up. At least the show mentions his gluttony for punishment even if he doesn't see it.

When it all comes out Raylan can't really use the excuse "I called up one piece of shit to help him kill the other piece of shit because he was threatening my pregnant girlfriend", particularly since it DOES look like he was actively working with them since he called up the assasination meeting and he was the one who got the Hail Mary phonecall when the Canadians killed everyone off screen.

Raylan might not have a job next year and we've got like ten episodes left, although I do see a way out it ....

i had a hard time buying that loser ass Johnny could actually convince Hot Rod's guys to turn on him.

but damn @ everything else...

Boyd's literal destruction of Paxton's entire existence on this planet.

Art's Diner stand off. (i need to call someone "shit fingers" before i die)

Boyd meeting Daryl Crowe for the first time = even more awesome than i expected.

More Alicia Witt. always good.

Tommy Gun shootout!!

damn, i didn't expect the Hatian to go out like that. I'm assuming the Crowe brother will try and pin it on Boyd.

We all know Mara will be back

As soon as they said Ava was getting out in the morning, i knew she was boned.

Raylan turning around at the end... conscience? ego? something else?

So much going on

Prior to that, I had an issue with Boyd's snitch dude being at the cathouse skimming from the top since that was a convenient way for Rappaport's character to edge his way into the show. I like the show, so I was able to let is slide, but that kinda bothered me in how convenient it was storywise.

Him deciding to fuck with Ava because he's a perv with a Napoleon complex seems a little weird. Especially when they just wrapped an angle where Boyd is fighting someone on the law enforcement side of things. There's gotta be some other connection to something going on.

BTW, you know that's Danny Siegel from Mad Men, right?

If Art was gonna figure it out anyway - correction, if I'm Raylan and I know Art has already figured it out due to the heavy knowing glances he gives after every "Unless there's something you want to tell me Raylan" conversation - then I already know I'm being protected. That means I just keep my mouth shut and work every extra shift the boss wants me to.

He's sick of dancing around this kind of thing with Art, and him half-assing his accusations... especially knowing he just flew out to Detroit for the sole purpose of investigating him.

and on some level he knows he's a borderline outlaw, and he hates it.

this new self sabotage seems like just another way to put himself in harms way... because, fuck it

It wasn't close to the prior one, but it wasn't that bad IMO. My main thought is that I'm kinda surprised by the amount of L's Boyd is taking this season. Hard to stomach him working with Rappaport's character, but this show's good enough that I'm interested to see how the show goes.

Interesting the show is brave enough to not have a big bad so far. I don't see Rappaport as a big bad since things aren't running close to smoothly as the prior big bad's had things during this portion of the season.

Man, that shit was funny.

Anywho, yeah that was a good ep. Shit continues to go sour for Boyd, but I have a feeling that he's coming out on top by the time the season's over. Last season everything went great until Ava ended prison, and then everything fell apart. I imagine the reverse is coming this season.

The intro scene with Raylan and Art was about as well done as possible. As were all of Raylan's interactions with Rachel.

And, yes, Rappaport is turning out to be pretty good.

Yeah, I go and flirt with other shows: True Detective got a great body House Of Cards will get as nasty as I want in conversation.

But when I come home after a hard day and want consistently good writing, great characters, great acting, and to truly be surprised week after week, accept no substitutes.

Boyd once again shows he's the smartest guy in the room. Luckily for him I assume the Mexican cartel will be *slightly* forgiving considering he can always play he had to shoot his way out of a jam they put him in.

LOL@Raylan and the hacker. I do wish they weren't so cheesy with the computer effects tho, that could have just been a twitter message instead of 'blogging'

I have a sneaking suspicion Rayland wouldda fucked Alicia Witt if she didn't show her cards so early to the social worker, particularly if she teased turning her cousin in.

And I feel sorry for the kid and I hope he gets a chance to escape from the Crowes.

I also love how they didn't wrap his issues up with the chief in a nice little bow. I do wish they had a more cathartic screaming match (hopefully before the end of the season) before its all said and done

There's a lot of plates spinning, but it's all so independent of each other. It just feels like at this point in the season, all of the characters should be headed in some shared direction.

I mean, obviously Daryl is gonna end up being the thing that brings Boyd back in to Raylan's sights, right? And the bodies in Mexico are gonna bring the cartel to Harlan I would assume. But I don't know. It just feels weird for everything to be so fluid still this deep into the season.

BTW, these are nitpicks. It's still one of my favorite shows on TV. I'm just sayin' this season so far, while good, seems tame for JUSTIFIED standards.

that this season will carry over a lot more directly to the next season moreso than the show had done in the prior seasons. With the next season being the last one, combined with a lot of key characters being killed off this season, I can't see the show introducing a new Big Bad next season.

...it's a different vibe from the "big bad comes to kentucky" the last couple seasons have had...and they don't have Elmore, so it's gonna be different...i love that the entire Crowe family is this lurking, but not immediate, threat.... i also love that many of the main characters are fairly self destructive, despite being pretty intelligent folks...Boyd and Raylan are still dealing with the consequences of last season and struggling to stay afloat in different ways

we all know it'll become more singular in the next couple episodes, but i hope everything isn't tied to together because right now the separate storytelling is really awesome...

all the characters have this sense of desperation (well, except tim and rachel)....just trying to survive and make it through the day....even Boyd hit that wall when he realized Ava wasn't coing home....

great season

Won't those bodies pop up south of the border now? It shouldn't be too hard for those cops to just say they stumbled upon the truck and found the dead bodies. Would kill their deal.

Overall, the Mexico trip story didn't do much for me because there were never really any options. The only interesting part was Boyd bringing up the sister to the guy who was helping them.

I still enjoy the show because of the sharp writing but this felt like kind of a throwaway episode. A set-up episode in the middle of a season that's done little but set things up.
Amy Smart's character was a little odd as well. Seems like she's a placeholder to keep Raylan busy until he shacks up with the redhead and takes Kendall under his wing.

I wish the Crowes were a more formidable foe but Johnny seemed like a bigger threat.

It was hella shortsighted, but at the same time it was smart move. Boyd figured they'd run into federalales as some point and the fact that they would more than likely rip them off. I'm sure the cartel will find out which will lead up to something big either at the end of the season or next season

Yea it was a boring episode overall, I did like the development with the Kendall story. I figured that the sister was Kendall's mother.

>I wish the Crowes were a more formidable foe but Johnny seemed

I'm almost there with you, but I still wonder what Darryl Jr. has up his sleeve, but then again he could just be just a bit smarter than Dewey in the end. I just hope Boyd isn't so desperate that he falls for it, cause it's been going bad for him.

The story I want to see develop so more is Ava, its probably the plot of the season. I really feel the severity of her situation.

As I noted in the other post, I thought holding out on the secret identity last season cost them a lot of tension and some great moments and all for a fairly anticlimatic reveal.

I kind of feel like they could be going that way with Darryl Jr. I mean, the reveal that Darryl had planned this whole Mexico mess wasn't that strong. I'd have rather watched the Crowes bickering about the plan and worrying about whether it would work (if the cartel would kill them or could Boyd talk them out of harm's way) than drudging through a rather straight forward and cliched Mexico plotline.
Keeping mystery around what's going on with Darryl Jr is just creating a rather boring villain for the first half of the season.

That was cold. Final words too.

The guest stars have been top notch. The Harris brothers and Eric Roberts this ep.

Love the butchered version of King Lear. They were great this season. Could've used more of them and less of chained heat ava crowder style.

I'm beyond tired of that story now. Can't see a pay off big enough to make it worth it.

Daryl Jr. finally spelled out his intentions. Not with that crew. LOL Can't even work a GPS. He's in over his head. Set wendy and the boy free.

Agent miller is corrupt as hell. Could be a good directv commercial for raylan. "Listen to ART, and don't get run over by d-level thugs on a road in the middle of nowhere"

all the old folks in this episode caught L's

Hot Rod, and two old men who could easily be the older versions of Raylan and Boyd

even Raylan's confidence took a hit in that first scene where the young hot girl vibing him turned out to be an escort

pretty fantastic episode. these writers are incredibly consistent. danny has been talking about the 21 foot rule all season long and he gets it by his own knife. much like raylan, i didnt even think of the ditch. and of course any episode that brings dickey back is just gonna win me over.

Two great episodes in a row. Man, I love this show. I've even gotten used to Rapaport's accent. Only two episodes left as well so things won't be drawn out.

I didn't realize that next year was the last year.

crowder there is only one outcome.

this episode was a bit too convoluted for me. why was theo tonin involved? because he wanted to finger picker? but then picker fingered darryl? and darryl finge...uh, blamed kendall?

it was worth it for the hotel scenes and raylan being the only one wise to darryl, but that was about it. the dessert scene in the prison came off as a bit corny.

Art captured Theo, so higher ups suspected Theo was trying to get revenge.

Theo however realized that this was an opportunity to get Picker, who killed his son Sammy, sent to jail where I'm assuming it would be easier to kill him (since the hitmen had come up empty so far.)

Picker then told Raylan what he had heard from Boyd, which was Daryl Jr. (Why Raylan would think Picker who'd been holed up and had little connection to the Harlan stuff would know anything is a little problematic.)

Daryl Jr. then had Kendall take the blame since he'd get just a few years in juvee while Daryl Jr. would get life or the death penalty.

Well, he was already aware of Picker's association with Duffy and Boyd (and in turn suspicious of Boyd's association with the Crowes) prior to this episode, so it's not that far-fetched that he would think Picker may have a heard a thing or two about Art's shooting from the local big shot criminals.

also, i assume they are sketching mary steenburgen's past because she will be involved beyond her assessment of picker and boyd (wonder if duffy gets a refund).

too many corny jokes, no real plot development, and very unbelievable plotlines.

- the writing just seemed off to me. some of the dialogue was so bad it took me out of the story, and the jokes belonged on another show (especially the "so good i got a boner" and "worldstar" bit). laughing at dewey crowe is fine in moderation, but this episode took it to slapstick levels.

- mikey has got to be the worst bodyguard ever. and then duffy is comforting him and giving him water like a sick child?

- what grounds did they have to arrest wendy? for all her knowledge of the legal system i was surprised she was apprehended so easily.

- most unbelievable part for me was wynn & boyd's play with the mexican cartel. they know the cartel is after them, so instead of appeasing them and doing all they can to give up darryl crowe, they set the cartel's messengers up to get busted by the marshalls? even if that plan worked out, the cartel in mexico would send many more guys to skin boyd & wynn.

- i also can't buy boyd believing he could get a clean slate and him even wanting one at this point in the show. he's tried going straight before but by now he knows who he is and has accepted it. so why would he ask for something he knows he wouldn't get (nevermind cooperating without a lawyer drawing up an agreement) instead of advocating for eva. he's made so many sacrifices this season to get eva off the hook, one little fight they have in jail and we're to accept he just forgets about her completely? his whole storyline this season was a man who will do anything for his woman.

- lastly, boyd calling his guy to talk shop on the phone he just got back from a us marshall who had it the whole day. cmon man.

so before this episode, the cartel was after boyd/duffy, crowe was on the loose, and kendall was being tried as a minor. after this episode...the cartel is after boyd/duffy, crowe is on the loose, and kendall is being tried as an adult. not much for plot development, besides getting rid of the dewey crowe comedy act.

raylan will have a shootout with dewey crowe in the finale and i'm sure they'll wrap it up nicely and set the stage for the final season, but this season has been pretty disappointing in my opinion. there have been some good episodes that highlight why this is one of the best shows on TV, but overall the underwhelming villains (shouldn't have killed off jean baptiste so early), story arc, and filler (dewey & eva) held this season back.

actually, almost everything ava/boyd related since their house hunting and engagement has been corny. should have just killed her off last season, making boyd desperate and even more dangerous this season. but that will probably happen now, with ava getting shanked next week.

old lady with a shotgun was predictable. thought it was funny when she was calling dewey touched, but as soon as she was going inside you knew what would happen. still love dewey though. bummed he copped to killing messer.

i can't believe that wendy would turn on kendall so quick, after just revealing to him she's his mother and after darryl beats the shit out of her. thought she had more smarts than that.

even an off season of justified is better than most shows on tv, but i'm a bit disappointed in this one.

In response to Reply # 145

They're now talking about what a slippery guy he is an can't be caught but we really haven't seen too much of that. He really hasn't had enough to do all season to establish him as a big bad guy.

Agreed that the prison stuff has been lousy, but the stuff with the Mexicans/Asian dude has been weak as well. They are a huge threat but everyone keeps putting them on the back burner - they put the bodies in the truck that the federalies take even though they know that will mean the death will be uncovered, Wynn Duffy lies to them about Boyd. For such a threat, people don't seem to mind pissing them off.

I think the end of the season will be Raylan killing Rappaport and his boss waking up and saying that it was indeed Kendall who shot him.

This season has been a lot of weak buildup. Picker was weak since he was basically confined to a hotel room. Rappaport's character flew under the radar for too long and was just trying to weasel his way into already shitty plans which didn't help. Ava and Boyd's love story came to a rather abrupt end which will likely end with Ava getting killed.

As others have said, a mediocre Justified is still better than most shows but this has most definitely been the weakest season and I'm almost happy that they are wrapping it up next season because I think they've gotten as far as they can with the current set-up.
Although I'd still like to see a Rachel and Tim spin-off

And, honestly, the "I'll stick around to nail Boyd" angle felt odd to me. I always felt like Raylan would have just turned his back on Boyd and not cared about whether or not he went to jail. I didn't see him as hell bent on nailing Boyd.

It was a lackluster season for Justified and I'm a little nervous about next season. Boyd working for someone doesn't have the same draw as Boyd trying to expand his empire.

I think he had just had enough of him. and you have to remember, raylan is the one that pulled out that big ass file of all the things that boyd has been tied to, but couldn't get any real charges on. he has been waiting for the time to come, and it has finally fully presented itself, so of course he would stick around to get it finished.

seemed like a much cleaner episode than the previous one, even though you had all the same players (darryl, kendall, boyd, the mexicans, wynn duffy, steenburgen).

i can buy raylan being done with boyd, but it was a little weird to have his decision to stay in harlan immediately after his call to winona. the juxtoposition of those scenes is the only thing that made it seem unlikely he would want to stay. but this whole season has been teasing about how boyd destroys everyone in his wake and raylan and the marshalls are finally about to put him down.

here's hoping to a big bank heist, explosions and all, in the season premiere and a full throttle chase against boyd, wynn & steenburgen all season long. no more mexico, no more detroit, no more canada, no more florida.

yeh it did seem like most of the season was on a bit of a cruise control, but that didn't stop em from dropping bodies left n right. the Picker explosion. holy shit. & i know they haven't really played up the angle lately, but the undercurrent has always been Raylan and Boyd and how they're the two sides of the same whole (Art's struggles this season speak to that dynamic as well). Raylan even muses on it when he's psyching out Kendal n wondering what he woulda been if he didn't become a lawman to spite Arlo (most-likely a crim, is always the implication). the way he let D. Crowe Jr get ganked like that, n then stand over him to deliver the last lines the man will ever hear on this earth, was badass but also ice cold. once again highlighting dude is just as dangerous and lawless as Boyd (but of course with less explosives).

they played that "won't get out of Harlan alive" song again. can't remember but do they use a version of that during every season finale? seems a bit on the nose if it's talking about our main characters. wouldn't be surprised if both Boyd and Raylan end up dead at the end of it all.

good to see majority of the Crowes now either dead or destroyed, altho they're hecka fun to watch. Rappaport wasn't as underdeveloped as some of yous say, i think he was meant to be a wildcard and an imposing presence thrown in the mix, and he was just that.

i think sumones already said it in the thread, but it's a good time to bring it around full circle and implode the Boyd/Raylan relationship (cos at this point they're almost like a couple of smirking war buddies, despite being on opposite sides of the law). these guys were ready to kill each other at one point early on in the series, seems fluid that the final season would be about bringing them both back to their original states of being from season 1 n 2. then it's just collision course b/w the two and let's see who's left standing.

i will say this, tho. i want Duffy and Mike to survive and drive off into the sunset in their cute lil motor home. everyone else can bite a bullet or two, but not them.
