"It's October, time to talk horror"
Fri Oct-07-11 03:38 PM by Dae021

Ok so I know we've talked it before, but this is the time of year where you should be seeing them now.

Last night I just rewatched the Original John Carpenter's The thing.

So i'm gonna talk about it because I just watched it. Not what I remember of it 6 years ago.

Those are the rules, Horror movies you've seen in the last 6 months or so relatively soon. Or have seen more than enough times that you can talk about them pretty deeply.

The thing is surprising because it has a slow burn feel, but really just blows through itself. Once the first person gets got it's rolling the whole way through, and even at the end you're still not sure what's happening. It leaves you like Deep blue Sea just with more ambiguity.

I'll give it 4 slashes for rating.

Please feel free to rate your favorite horror flicks with slashes.

Like Child's play should get 2 slashes ya dig.

I know a lot of people love this flick. I've always found it to be sort of bunk. I think because so many people love. The werewolf aspect of it is janky, but the transition of Ginger from ostracized teen to sex pot werewolf is the most fascinating part of this whole flick.

Although I did like the mom. i thought she was great.

Anyone see any of the sequels?

She had never seen it and wanted to know why it was a classic.

She absolutely loved it.

I think it's a great flick, and the way that Anthony Perkins plays those roles is so good. The violence of the shower scene was shocking for the time period and has to be viewed in that context.

It's just a great flick.

i love the staircase deathscene.

True story.
I take this film class in college.
About 20 of us.
Fun class.
Psycho is on the list.
Professor asks how many of us have seen Psycho at least a dozen times.
Everyone's hand goes up.
Professor asks us how many of us have seen the movie on a big screen.
Zero hands.
Professor promises us that everyone will jump during the staircase scene, bets us that if even just one of us doesn't, he'll give the entire class an A for the semester.
All 20 of us, who have seen this movie LITERALLY thousands of times, are hype about this. Who doesn't want a free A? All you gotta do is not jump when a scene you've seen a thousand times happens. How can we lose?
Man, every single student in the class - self included - jumped out of our seats during the staircase scene.
Professor stopped the movie and turned the lights on, laughing maniacally.
That's a great movie.

I watched that film and since my sister and pops were into horror flicks when I was youngr I watched with them as a young kid. Then i watched as an adult, man that is just a masterfully done film.

I liked every aspect of it, the beginning which sets the whole story up that folks tend to gloss over.

Including the Busta Rhymes sample in there that when i watched recently hit me in my entire head. Love it.

clicked the link.
Yup, the nurse scene.
That's a great scene.
The scene that always scares me from The Exorcist series, and I don't remember which one it's in (it might not even be an Excorsist movie, I had a huge contact high when I saw it) was one where the protagnist is talking to the doctor, and in the background, unobserved, one of the patients literally climbs up the walls and sits on the roof, then comes back down before anyone notices.

I liked where it was goin and I also loved how when she recognized the power of the vagina it became a weapon.

It was sort of boringly written in parts, but all in all it was a fun film.

It gets 5 due to the claustrophobic horror it creates. Perfect. Alien status imo.

In response to Reply # 0

Trick R Treat is one of my favorite movies of all time, it's got great actors, story and some kind of throwback appeal. All around great flick though. I watched this for like the 5th time two nights ago. If you haven't seen it, get your ass on Netflix right now.

^^5 out of 5 slashes

The Dream Warriors was ok, it's hard to watch these old flicks with such ambitious special effects. I didn't find it scary at all

2 slashes.

OH, I did see The Thing for the first time recently, dope flick. I played the video game YEARS ago, and that shit was AMAZING. This post makes me wanna go see the new one. Eerie flick though, 4 slashes.

I saw trick or treat. I saw the lineup of actors and was like this will be dope.

I enjoyed the way that all the stories intertwined, but I felt that there were times when it was just bunk. The little pumpkin head thing was crazy!

If we're going outta five it gets 3.5 outta 5 for me.

Now NES 3 is a good flick. The first thing if you've seen the #1 then you'll notice that this one is really #2 as #2 just sort of sucked and had nothing to do with the cannon of the movie. It had a young patricia arquette and a house full of young kids who were all over the place. The fact that they explain that Freddy's mom was raped by a 1000 maniacs and no one knows who his father is! Also Kindcaid lived fam, that has to get love, Kincaid lived! The scene in which the glass breaks and everyone falls into the room still has effect today. I really liked this movie. The death scenes are creative and fun. I give this 4 outta 5.

watched it for the third or fourth time last night...it's definitely going to be a Halloween tradition for me.

The throwback appeal that you're talking about, for me, is that it reminds me of the old Nickelodeon Halloween specials...just grown up a bit.

I really wish this got some studio backing and caught on. It could have been a great series of movies.

In response to Reply # 49

I kid.
I can't think of any horror movie that delivers more than THE SHINING. I'd have to give that the #1 spot. PSYCHO is up there, but it's gotta be Kubrick's horror masterpiece. Whatever kind of horror movie you like - whether it be psychological, boogieman, gore, violence, shock, whatever - this movie delivers in heaps. The number one movie from any genre should be a good film, independent of its genre, as well as represent the best of said genre. And on that level, what's fucking with THE SHINING?

how this movie was released in the '70s with only a R rating. I guess it's not violent or sexual enough to nab the X, but some of the lines uttered are still quite shocking today.

good movie though. I also took a little perverse joy in seeing it happen in Georgetown.

In response to Reply # 0

Though I loved "Scream" for bringing a freshness and an energy back to the well-worn slasher genre, IKWYDLS was a steaming pile of laziness, which sucked all that energy (and the air) right back out. I hated that "Dawson's Creek Horror" of the 90s,and in some ways we still seem to be stuck there.

Who thought a killer fisherman was a great idea? smh They were stalked/killed by the Gorton's Fisherman, who somehow anticipated exactly EVERY move they made. This wasn't a friend, or someone familiar with the group. This was a random dude seeking revenge for getting run over and dumped in the water, after he JUST killed someone else. Why didn't he fill out a police report? Oh right, because he JUST KILLED SOMEONE. He should have simply kept it moving.

I know arguing about logic in horror movies is down right ridiculous. But it's one of those movies where suspending reality/belief doesn't work, because there are too many "Hold up, wait a minute" moments requiring answers.

No notices a man dumping a dead body...and crabs...in a car trunk? After Julie discovers the body and runs to get help, no one notices a man, in the middle of the street, during daylight hours, removing a dead body...AND CRABS...from a car trunk?

And how'd he get the trunk so clean, leaving no trace, not even a smell?

When Barry gets killed on the balcony, and Helen runs and screams for someone to help, why'd the audience hold her back, keeping her from getting to him? Why was Barry the only person allowed on the balcony to watch the beauty pageant? And why'd it take the cop so long to get up there, allowing the killer to once again "Mr. Clean" the entire area?

When the cop drove Helen to the police station and saw the barricaded street, how'd the killer know the cop would back up and turn down the alleyway where he was waiting? When the cop saw the killer's truck blocking the alley, why didn't he back up and try another street? Why'd he get out of the car to assist?

When Helen ran to her sister's shop, why didn't her sister see the fisherman walking after Helen when he was only a few steps away? And how'd he get around the block and enter through the back door so fast?

How did NO ONE notice Helen getting killed at the alley as the parade was going on. It wasn't back deep in the alley, it was at the ENTRANCE next to a stack of tires. All those people marching by and standing across the street and no one saw or heard a thing? It wasn't like the Grambling State or the USC marching bands were rolling through.

And did anyone REALLY think Ray was the killer? That may have been the laziest attempt at throwing the audience off the trail I've ever seen.

Watching it, I had so many issues, I couldn't even look at it as a guilty pleasure horror flix. Terrible dialogue, terrible acting, terrible death sequences. Terrible, terrible movie.

1 slash (and that's only for having cute ass Jennifer Love Hewitt. They get points for showing how their lives were negatively impacted holding on to their secret.....but mostly for JLH).

But from everything else you wrote, you're spot on.

It's a bad flick, and the sequel even with Brandy and Jennifer Espinoza is even worse.

Terrible Terrible flicks the both of them.

Man, I love flicks that so expertly mix comedy and horror. Never cheesy, and dark and surreal enough to keep interest. I'd give it a solid 8/10.

INSIDIOUS: i hated the script. And, totally shied away from it when it was out and i'm NOT a fan of Patrick Wilson (I don't give a damn that he went to Carnegie Mellon or his wife is smoking hot, he's irritating as an actor and needs to do something ELSE other than the nebbish, weak ass white dude who gets a backbone AND strength at the end of the movie schtick) and Rose Byrne needs that good plate of smothered chicken, collards with fatback, baked mac and cheese, mash potatoes and gravy with a couple slices of saltwater cornbread and sweet potato pie washed down with some sweet black tea....
but that movie was scary as fuck. the scares were RIGHT where they needed to be, the cast was great, etc. the ending so OUT of left field... 9/10 definitely

THE THING (1982): classic horror like Dae said, it was a well plotted out slow burn, and WHUT, the negro was at the end y'all (though we can all BET he was the thing)...just a great REMAKE of a classic from the 50s (y'all KNOW the 1982 THING is NOT the original, right?! RIGHT) 10/10

THE ENTITY: Barbara Hershey stars as a woman who is physically and sexually molested by an invisible demon...the filmmakers failed with telling this story from the POV of the doctor who didn't believe she was experiencing this....but barbara hershey was BRILLIANT as the woman who goes from victim to almost badass in fighting back and reclaiming her life from the demon...the fact that it followed her everywhere was scary as hell 7/10

THE SENDER: a disturbed mental patient, blessed with psychic powers, transmits his nightmares onto the staff and patients of a psych hospital and people start dying. Cheesy, but very effective performances from Zeljko Ivanek and Kathryn Harrold. Just a really good film. A rare gem. If you can find it, rent it. 7/10

Of recent years, plain and simple. I still maintain that Rose Byrne is incredibly boring as an actress, but she pulls this off well.

The scares are pretty real here. If I were prone to jumping and being scared by movies this one would probably have done it. The way things play out towards the end are absolutely fantastic.

Now I don't get me wrong, I don't love it but it's good.

I'm gonna have to adjust my slashes, but it gets 4 outta 5 from me.

i know THE SENDER is at netflix but not streaming.

But both are OFTEN hard to get at netflix...I had THE SENDER once last year....

sent it back wanted to see it again and all of a sudden, they either didn't have it or there was a wait...

which is odd since *MOST* people have never heard of this...which is sad its a good movie.

They kinda acknowledged their remake-ness too early, with the opening. But there were some good kills, and you never got attached to the early victims, so you don't get to be bummed out when they get fucked up.

my favorite type of movie, gritty, mildly nonsensical, and gory. tom savini really made this one pop. 2.5 out of 4 slashes.

tobe hooper's funhouse--i hadn't seen this one since i was a kid. it was okay, but didn't quite excite me the way it used to. 2 out of 4 slashes.

...if he kept the Frankenstein mask on. There was something kinda creepy about that mask.

They didn't even need the "deformed lunatic" angle, especially in a carnival setting (which is always creepy to me). But as soon as he took it off, it became silly. I was like, "WTF is that? Is he supposed to be deformed, or a monster, or an alien?"

I did like the atmosphere of it though. Everything was dark, with all the weirdness of the carnival attractions mixed in.

Let The Right One In ****
I think this and Pan's Labyrinth are two of my favorite "horror" movies ever, the mood and fantasy it creates never gets old to me.

Let Me in ***
the remake can't touch the original, still a dope flick.

Dawn Of The Dead (remake) **
I loved the update on the whole zombie takeover thing
damn scary too

28 Days Later **
Same as Dawn Of The Dead remake, like the angle they approach it with

Pan's Labyrinth ****
I'm a sucker for the fantasy/horror mix,
Gore is okay, as long as it is not overdone (like the hostel, saw series & final destination sequels...hate those with a passion)

Audition ***
Scary as hell towards the end, nice build up during the movie itself

Scream 4 **
I always enjoyed the Scream franchise

Urban Legend *
Had to add this, it came out during the whole teen slasher period around scream & I know What You did,
it's entertaining

28 Days later is so scary because for the 1st time ever, the zombie like things are fast, they are sprinting to kill you, not like the other aimlessly ambling things these fuckers might actually be faster than you and will catch you by sheer numbers.

>>28 Days Later **
>Same as Dawn Of The Dead remake, like the angle they approach

Audtion is one of my favorite flicks for just the way it goes so incredibly wrong, my goodness after the bag shit, and the ending man I was just sort of awestruck by the whole thing.

The trailer had me scared as shit to watch this, meaning I probably should watch it.

I have not been freaked out by a horror movie since seeing The Grudge. The Ring was the one I saw before that.

Is this movie up there with them or should I look for something else.

I finally saw Let Me In this week and I think they did a great job.

horror flicks but i got tired of watching the sub titles. i realized that as much as i like gore and guts and a good scare, i also like good dialogue. i wish they would use english speaking voice overs for some of the stuff they sell in the US.

but, I hate torture porn horror
and extremely sadistic violence towards women

Martyrs had both, and I still say its a great film.

It's hella French, though. Especially the second half.

If you don't like the whole ponderous French Film thing, you might not like it.

Personally, I thought it was great, but I won't be watching that again, lol

That movie will make you stop and think after watching it. Despite a whole lot of tortue it is still a deep movie somehow. I love that movie but it makes me uncomfortable to watch.

A Serbian Film fucked me up in a diff way, but Martys made something inside me uncomfortable.

I couldn't finish City of the Living Dead. Which is weird, I've seen a ton of horror, some pretty gory, brutal stuff...but for some reason that one grossed me out so much I stopped it half way. I can't even think of another movie where I've done that, not even counting Takashi Miike films.

i mean, no doubt, fulci's films are hella gory, but i find his brand of gore comforting. (watching that tarantula eat a man's face is one of my favorite things ever.) takashi miike, on the other hand, nope. just can't do it. it's too slick and realistic without the grainy, dream-like feel of the italian stuff.

My first thought after finishing this film was "What the fuck did I just watch?"

Not in a "that movie was utter trash" way but in a mentally scarred way.

Beautiful cinematography, and the build-up to the wife just going completely nuts was executed really well, another slow-burn situation.

This movie is really graphic though, so prepare yourself. For that reason alone I will probably never watch it again, but I can't say I regret watching it at all

A bunch of Nazis take over this Keep on Romania and accidentally release a Demon. The jewish doctor that studied the keep (Ian McKellan) who was brought out of a ghetto to help them figure out what's going on tries to free the Demon to destroy the Nazis but a strange loner shows up and tries to stop him

If you're into fantasy/horror and/or 80's movies I would definitely recommend it

But it allowed Robert Englund to go nuts and just be as fun with Freddy as he possibly could. I am disappointed Monica Keena didn't get naked though.

I did however enjoy how Kelly Rowland got it.

Jason X blew my mind, I saw it in the theater and it seriously brought the revenge of the nerd right out of me. 90 minutes of wheezy laughing and snorting.

Everything about it is so over the top and hammy that I can't imagine anyone went into making this movie with a serious face.

I just wish the same team was used for Freddy vs. Jason. It was kind of trying to pull off the same tone, but I thought it failed.

Which is why it failed, I think in Jason X they shot the first couple of scenes and realized what was about to go down and was like fuck it this will be way better if we just go all the way with this.

It might've been around the time that dude yells out:

"IT'S OKAY EVERYBODY! HE ONLY WANTED HIS MACHETE BACK!!!!"

That I wondered if maybe it was supposed to be a comedy.

Lest we forget the part with the "Holo-deck" and the two camping girls meant to lure Jason away...

yea I can see your point, it's a mixure of camp and scares. Couple of things about it.

#1. Katherine Isabell should've gone full nude
#2. They played Jason more towards the way he used to kill people in the 2nd one, like all of his kills were somewhat funny or even ironic. Freddy is just a phsycho who loves killing, I absolutely love that about him.
#3. Monica Keena can't act, but hey i'll take it. Fake jubblies and all
#4. Really dog? Really? You're going to use the fake Jay to sedate Jason so you can get him in the van? WTF come on now.
#5. (mild spoiler, but if you didn't know it was coming shame on you) Watchin Kelly Rowland get read in that cornfield was great, then seeing her get got at the end was even better

I've seen this movie and pieces of it maybe 20 tmies.

For some reason it didn't register that the dude on the stage with her was William Katt (The Greatest American Hero) Fam check out his hair, he has the illest curls B.

Ok so the part I wanted to talk about was the look on Sissy Spacek's face right before it jumps off. She's seeing everything, still in a state of disbelief for being on the stage. She's watching and she's recognizing everything, but it's not registering, so when the blood hits MAN there's a look of horror, disappointment, hurt, and finally disgust with herself for trusting these people. And then she blacked out and it's a wrap.

I've always loved that part.

...was freakin' AWESOME. Excellent job of building tension through the score. Then just after the blood was poured, the music stopped and all you hear is the clanging of the emptied bucket overhead, 'til it hits and knocks out Tommy. That's my favorite part of the movie...

Well, that and at the beginning when the kid rides past her, calling her "Creepy Carrie, Creepy Carrie," and she "mind pushes" little dude off the bike. He straight busted his ass. Has me dying every time.lol

I take it you caught the Stephen King tribute on AMC...

Yea I saw they're still doing it. Honestly outside of the Shinning the majority of those films just aren't that good.

But you're right about most of the film versions. Going through the list of King adapted movies, it gets pretty hazy past '85, horror wise:

Now this is how you make a ghost story. It has all the familiar story elements, but presented in a way that doesn't feel tired. This movie had some pretty good suspense even though you know what's going to happen (The Ghosts just need to be vindicated so they can live in peace blah blah)

I would definitely recommend it to Ghost story/haunted house fans as well as Guillermo Del Toro fans (he "presented" the film QT style)

Alien - 4 slashes - Movie was awesome on all levels

Predator - 3.5 slashes - I can't put my finger on why I like it, but it was really a scary and entertaining movie

The Thing - 4 slashes - Same with Alien - Awesome on all levels

Tales from the Hood 3 slashes - It wasn't really scary, but I was really entertained. David Alan Grier was really good in his segment. You know how comedians being in non-comedic roles can take away from their performance because it's hard to take them seriously? This didn't happen for me with this role. He was truly menacing...until the end of course, lol.

As much as I hate to admit it, The Blair Witch Project had me shook. Made me think twice whenever I was in the woods.

I really miss shows like Tales from the Crypt, Creepshow and Twilight Zone. I remember really looking forward to seeing what they came up with.

It's where one of the three dude's goes "Where's the shit" and Clarence Williams III smiles that creeeepy smile and goes "The shit?!? Oh, you'll get the shit. YOU'RE ALL GONNA BE KNEE DEEP IN THE SHIT!!!"

It had me laughing so hard, it brought tears to my eyes. Just the way he says it.

As far as great lines by him, that might even top "YESSSSS! CUBAN B!!!"

The way things progress, and the low budget realistic feel of that movie, plus combined with the marketing campaign at the time was genius.

Plus that movie was genuinely scary for a lot of folks.

That part in the tent, and everything leading up to the end was good movie making fam.

Just rewatched it last night, and it really doesn't have THAT much blood and gore, seeing as how it is credited with creating the 'torture porn' label (btw, that's a stupid genre to have come up with).

Sure, the sequels are over the top and VERY gory, as are the films like Hostel, High Tension, Wolf Creek, etc, etc, but the OG Saw was a great movie (with admittedly weak acting for a couple characters, but I digress)...

The first one is genuinely good and clever.

you have no clue who jigsaw is until the very last minute and it's done really well.

You get a sense of Wesley (Princess Bride)'s desperation at the end.

I think it's well done.

The rest are eh, and probably could've been done without.

I'll say this though, I loved Wolf creek, I enjoyed the 1st Hostel lets be real the 1st one of a lot of those movies are good. After that though, they tend to fall fast.

I didn't really care for either Wolf Creek or Hostel.

Wolf Creek was just... depressing for a 'slasher' flick (I'm using that quite loosely, not sure what subgenre to call it).

Hostel was a good idea but had WAY too much gore for its own good, and the sequel, yuck.

like when you're watching that, you have no hope that anyone is going to survive. I felt like they set that one up really really well. When homeboy made Head on a stick I was just like this muthafucka is crazy and they all gone die.

Hostel stylistically was good, Jay Ramirez as Paxton was good and the story was cool. It was really gory, but I mean you couldn't really have that movie any other way. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Sunday: The Walking Dead Season 2 premiere
Nowhere near as good as the season 1 premiere, but it wasn't too bad. Can't believe there's a show like this on even a cable channel, they don't leave a lot of gore to the imagination, and that's OK.

Tuesday: Saw
A buddy of mine had never seen this, so we watched, and I think he was pleasantly surprised. He goes afterwards: 'That really was not scary or too gory, how come I thought it would be more of both?' Truth be told, the first movie is fantastic, and plays more like Se7en than a traditional slasher flick. Now the sequels, those are completely over the top gorefests.

Wednesday: Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: Nightmare Warriors graphic novel
Y'know, much like the original Vs. movie, this is very entertaining and a bit goofy. But that's the beauty, it is a horror fanboy's stroy really, with appearance by characters from all 3 franchises, not just the main guys. Should have been a movie.

Thursday: Let the Right One In
Finally got around to watching this on Netflix, and it did not disappoint. I was expecting more 'horror', but was pleasantly surprised to see the 'love' story that it really was. It was part The Shining in its buildup to the intense scenes, part Romeo & Juliet, and part History of Violence. Very good flick.

When you watch you're expecting some horror flick, but it's really about love and companionship.

I did love how in Let the right one in they showed the mutilation of the girl(i used the term loosely) but in let me in, they showed the kids expression to seeing it. The original means more that way you know.

I mean if think about it, it's a happy ending in someways and oppressively sad in another. This little kid has just given his entire life to this little vampire who will never grow up. He will become the old man and then she'll get another 12 year old just like him 45 years from then. It's such a strange strange revelation to make when you're watching these two kids.

That is exactly what I was thinking... The first dude who poured acid on his head, that was him. The look on his face when she was meeting the new kid was a sad twist to the film.

Because it's hard to say if the vampire was ever actually the kid's friend. It seems like maybe from the beginning, when she saw that her guy was getting old and losing his touch, she needed to find someone knew...so the whole movie was her trying to win the little boy over so that he could be her next companion/servant.

Its like he could've been the 3rd or 4th one in a line of servants you know.

Although he/she could've felt a genuine connection with the kid, that could be part of the whole deal. She actually likes them enough to turn them into her servant.

Watched this last night. I had seen it about 4 years ago. I really liked this movie. It was fun, without being wack. Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks do a great job carrying this movie. The two of them seem to enjoy the ridiculousness of the situation of which they find themselves.

It had some cringe inducing gore moments (when the fat lady bursts) oh man that's the OH shit moment.

There's some really good stuff in this flick.

I would give it 3.75 slashes.

I've seen all of these in the past few months, Netflix Instant is responsible for most of them (No, I don't know why I hadn't seen any of these beforehand).

The Thing: Perfection. Probably my favorite horror movie already. I love the paranoia of movies like this, and as others have mentioned the special effects look like they could have been done yesterday. I was really worried it would look corny too. Great ending. Will see the prequel despite some reservations. 10/10

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Absolutely terrifying. I sincerely didn't know whether the last one in the group was going to live or not, or who would even be the last one in the group. Leatherface going nuts by himself with the chainsaw is an image that will stick in my mind. 10/10

Eraserhead: I'm sorry everyone. I thought I was into weird shit until I saw this movie. It's just fucking gross. But I'll give it a point for cinematography. 1/10

Poltergeist: Giving some allowance for bad special effects (although you could argue that The Thing came out the same year and that didn't stop it from having great SFX) it was pretty scary and I love the mystery what was going on in the portal. 8/10

Jaws: Like The Thing I was worried the effects would look corny and they didn't at all. Nothing else to say other than I see why it's a classic. 10/10

Psycho: This is actually the first Hitchcock movie I've ever seen. Great mystery and suspense, and I never guessed the ending. 8/10

American Psycho: Still not sure how I feel about the ending, but I loved the look, violence, and the commentary on 80's American culture. The dark sense of humor of it all did it for me. 7/10

Rosemary's Baby: I'm only knocking it a couple points because I'm not really a fan of satan-themed movies, but this was a great script with great performances. Strange, but a very well done. 7/10

Zombieland: No complaints here, it was pretty funny. The Zombie action and Bill Murray appearance were both damn good. Probably won't go out of my way to see it again, but if I catch it by accident I'll definitely watch. 7/10

Red State: I won't go into detail, because I already did in the other post, but I can see why it is a love it or hate it thing. I actually loved it, though it's not really a horror movie. 8/10

Shaun of the Dead
Just saw this for the first time yesterday, it was very enjoyable and funny, although when discussing horror-comedies, I think I prefer Zombieland. I feel like I now have to play catch up with Edgar Wright.

The Thing (2011)
I went in with reservations, but it turned out to be pretty entertaining nonetheless. The shock and awe of 'anybody could be the alien' was still there, and that made me more jumpy than I probably should have been. The effects were pretty great, and freaky as hell. That all said, the OG movie is still the better film and those original effects are just too good to pass up.

I thought that the way they portray the zombies was light, and great.

I loved the comedy aspect and felt like it was more comedy than horror but it's done well enough that everything works.

Zombieland is slightly behind it to me, although Woody Harrelson was pretty badass in that jount.

It started really slow, so I fell asleep on it the first time I tried to watch it, but picked up towards the middle. I tried watching it at night, but couldn't. Had to turn up the volume because the actors were speaking so low, but the sound effects were really loud. As a result, my kids are calling me from their rooms all scared and shit because the can hear the scary noises, so I ended up watching it during the day. It was still effective even with the sun up. I can see it being a top 10 contender. I'm going to read the book as someone recommended.

It would not surprise me if Linda Blair was currently strung out on drugs and in constant therapy. I'm always amazed at movies like this using kids. If adults are scared from watching, what psychological effects does it have on the kids participating in the movie production?

http://www.npr.org/2011/10/29/141683620/after-40-years-grisly-exorcist-book-gets-a-rewrite

After 40 Years, Grisly 'Exorcist' Book Gets A Rewrite

In 1971, a novel set off a frenzy that soon inspired a film — and then a firestorm.

In The Exorcist, William Peter Blatty told the spine-chilling story of a little girl named Regan MacNeil, the daughter of a Hollywood star shooting a film in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Funny things start happening in the MacNeils' rented house: They hear noises in the wall, and Regan starts speaking in a growl, levitating, turning her head 360 degrees and spitting up green slime. Then, Regan's bedroom gets as chilly as a frozen foods case and her bed starts flying around.

Readers were drawn to the novel's profane subject matter, making it a best-seller. When the book's film adaptation came out two years later, fans waited in lines that stretched around city blocks to catch the first screenings; some even tried using battering rams to force their way into theaters.

Forty years later, Blatty has revised and polished his landmark novel, even adding a whole new character. The result is a 40th-anniversary edition that's just as terrifying as the original.

'A Blessing From Above'

Blatty tells NPR's Scott Simon that before he started writing The Exorcist, he'd been working as a comic novelist, and screenplay writer for comedian Peter Sellers. Then, in the summer of 1969, the comedy job market dried up.

"I said, 'What am I going to do?' " Blatty remembers. " 'There is this novel I have been thinking about writing since my junior year at and what else have I got to do now? I'll do it.' "

Blatty spent the next nine months working on the novel. About three weeks before it was finished, he received a lucrative offer to adapt it for the big screen.

"I raced through the ending of the novel and that's it. I had no time to do another draft. It was my first draft. Now, you know, I virtually prayed for a chance to do it again and then along comes , and on the 40th I'm still around," he says. "I thought it was like a blessing from above."

'I'm The Devil!'

About halfway through Blatty's novel, Damien Karras — a priest and psychiatrist experiencing a crisis of faith — is called in to help the troubled Regan. Their first encounter is unsettling, to say the least. Blatty writes:

Regan's eyes gleamed fiercely, unblinking, as a yellowish saliva dribbled down from a corner of her mouth to her chin, to her lips stretch taut into a feral grin of bow-mouthed mockery.

"Well, well, well," she gloated sardonically and hairs prickled up on the back of Karras's neck at a voice that was deep and thick with menace and power. "So, it's you ... they sent you!" she continued as if pleased. "Well, we've nothing to fear from you at all."

"Yes, that's right," Karras answered; "I'm your friend and I'd like to help you."

"You might loosen these straps, then," Regan croaked. She had tugged up her wrists so that now Karras noticed they were bound with a double set of leather restraining straps.

"Are the straps uncomfortable for you?"

"Extremely. They're a nuisance. An infernal nuisance."

The eyes glinted slyly with secret amusement.

Karras saw the scratch marks on Regan's face; the cuts on her lips where apparently she'd bitten them. "I'm afraid you might hurt yourself, Regan," he told her.

"I'm not Regan," she rumbled, still with that taut and hideous grin that Karras now guessed was her permanent expression. How incongruous the braces on her teeth looked, he thought. "Oh, I see," he said, nodding. "Well, then, maybe we should introduce ourselves. I'm Damien Karras. Who are you?"

"I'm the devil!"

Blatty says he actually didn't mean to make the book as scary as it turned out. Instead, it was meant to be a novel about faith, in which Father Karras' beliefs are tested by Regan's possession.

"It's a humiliating confession. I have no recollection of intending to frighten anyone at any point in time," he says. "That's Stephen King — he's the master of terror."

According to Blatty, his book was initially a disaster. It was so bad that his publisher went so far as to treat him to a farewell lunch. But in the middle of lunch, Blatty got a call from The Dick Cavett Show. They had lost a guest at the last minute and wanted him to fill in.

"I came out onstage, and Dick Cavett said, 'Well, Mr. Blatty I haven't read your book.' I said, 'Well, that's OK, so I'll tell you about it,' " he recalls. "I got to do a 41-minute monologue. That was it."

The next week, Blatty picked up a copy of Time magazine at the airport and found that his book was No. 4 on the best-seller list. Not long after, it reached No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list — and it stayed there for 17 weeks.

"I still didn't plan on frightening anyone. I sleep with a night light!" Blatty says, laughing. "It was all an accident."

http://www.avclub.com/articles/24-hours-of-horror-with-edgar-wright,63920/1/

Really cool article, in which Edgar Wright -- director of "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz" and "Scott Pilgrim" -- programs a 24 hour marathon of his favorite horror movies and discusses why he picked each one. A lot of obscure stuff in here that I would love to see, particularly "Long Weekend," which is described as a bleak, straight-faced version of "Furry Vengeance" set in the Australian outback. Watch the trailer -- looks pretty awesome.

Man this shit was crazy. The kid, damn even the kid!!!

Even when we think that they got one of em, nope they flipped it on us. I loved the way they broke the 4th wall in this though. This is just unrelenting evil that is made even more so by the nonchalantness of it.

Really creepy, and really wel done.

I'll give it 3.5 slashes

It's been on AMC a few times this weekend, and it's poop. Was there an off-point in the series to make them not go with Michael Myers as the antagonist?

Carpenter originally intended to have each Halloween movie be a different scary story.

He was basically pressured into keeping it about Michael Myers.

I mean even the low budget pumpkin graphics on the TV everything about that flick was a fail.

There was nothing scary about it, there was nothing cohesive about it and above all else you're waiting for Michael Myers to show up so at the ending credits you're like expecting him to come through until it's over and you're mad you wasted that time out of your life.

All the Halloweens were supposed to be seperate movies unattached.

So they would all be under the Halloween brand, but none of them would be connected, sort of like freakshow.

I don't think most people have actually watched this movie. I think they all know Tony Todd as the villain.

I didn't know Virginia Madsen had such ample bossoms, you wouldn't know until you watched this movie and saw that she's bascally naked for like 15 mins straight.

The actualyl flick was almost scary, and done almost well. I enjoy it, btu i know it's not good.

I should probably get like 2.5 outta 5 slashes, but young some of the kills were GANGSTER!

Candyman was getting fools.
