"RENTING better than BUYING?"

RENTING BETTER THAN BUYING
Will you really watch that DVD more than once?

Have you seen these ad campaigns for Blockbuster? I saw one on the bus the other day and was like, "WTF? Hell yeah I'm gonna watch that DVD more than once!" Is the new DVD phenomenon really causing havoc on Blockbuster's hold on the renting video market? Do you really watch your DVD's more than once?

To be honest...no, I don't watch them like I listen to CD's. But it's the sense of ownership that I like. I'm a collector. Only on rare occasions do I rent a DVD. Why? Most of the time, the quality is poor (scratched discs), lack of selection, new titles are checked out, and most importantly, LATE FEES. I'd much rather buy the movie instead of paying $20 in late fees (i'm bad like that).

So...are you like m, xangeluvr, Triptych, and myself? When that new Memento comes out, you're gonna buy it for a one time price?

OR

Do you watch everything on that DVD, and then return it to Blockbuster in 5 days?

I've been buying alot but lately I feel like I've been gettin cheated w/ some bad selections that I doubt I really wanna watch again.

Bought Usual Suspects and Memento. Then bought the special ed suspects and gave the old 1 2 my Dad since he gave me Training Day which he didnt really like. I probably will also buy the special ed Memento DVD and give the old 1 2 my pops as well.

I agree Netflix is tight, but in that 3 months you had the Soprano's ($20/month), you could have just bought it, and then never paid again.

But I agree. I own like 6 dvds/tapes. And three were gifts. I just can't watch a movie enough to warrant buying it, unless it's on the clearance rack.

DVD = $19.99 - $29.99

Blockbuster = $2.99-$4.99

I watch a lot of movies but buy few. If I rent a movie more than 3 or 4 times than I'll buy it, but this doesn't happen often. Even renting something 3 times cheaper than buying it. Most movies I get bored with after I see them a few times so I'd rather not have them sitting on my shelf.

Plus Blockbuster Rewards program - I pretty much only rent on days I get 2-for-1s...

Plus I really don't need to see EVERY movie on DVD, so I've been taking advantage of the drop in VHS prices. Sometimes that's a nice middle-ground for me - If there's something I kinda wanna buy but don't want to spend $20-$30 on I'll grab the $6-$10 VHS, used. Got "Kundun" the other day on VHS for $5.99

In response to Reply # 9

is how I make the determination...Meaning, if its a highly visual movie I'll probably want it on DVD. If its a director that makes good use of color...(obviously Kundun falls into this category but I wouldn't have bought it at all if I didn't get it for $5.99)

But a movie like Jay & Silent Bob strike back? half-baked? Hurlyburly? VHS is fine for me. THose movies are driven, to me, by the narrative more than the visual fabric.

Besides, unless you have HDTV, you're not really taking full advantage of DVD quality anyways...

I disagree. The video quality with an S-Video hook up is 100X's better than any VHS video. Same goes for component video, and you don't have to own a HDTV to enjoy either of those formats because the connections are almost standard on most TV's.

I'm not talking VHS vs. DVD its obsvious picture quality is higher on DVD.

What I meant was that, to the best of my knowledge, "regular" TVs don't have the capability to display the full increased resolution that DVD provides. Not to mention the absence of 16 x 9, which although doesn't necessarily take an HDTV, most people don't have TVs that can play that format.

So most of us aren't witnessing DVD at its full potential.

...at the moment, I really prefer to rent above buying. Too many crap-ass movies out on DVD to waste my billfold on(and I have run across some stinkers that were "supposed to be excellent.").

Thing is, the list of flicks that I can honestly say I will/would have/have watched over and over is very short. I have a shitload of videotapes to prove that. I can't be droppin' $20-$30 on a disc I may only watch once or not even like(i.e. Hannibal).

I will most likely buy that Memento joint if/when it drops at a low one-time price. Everytime I go into a store though, I do browse the DVD section, but nothing ever jumps out and screams "Buy Me!" Most of the time, I just file titles away in my head, come home, and put 'em on my Netflix list!!

Now that I think of it I watched very few of my DVD in their entirety or repeatedly. What I usually do is watch scenes I like (mostly action sequences). Like when I buy LOTR I doubt I'll watch that whole movie again just key scenes. But like Leroy said its the feeling of ownership thats probably the bigger point.

Transformers was a BIG part of my childhood. There were a few things I would retreat to that would just entertain me for hours on end as a kid. Shit, I already got the movie(on video though...didn't have my DVD player when I bought it)

To be honest, I think nostalgia grabbed a hold of my billfold and forced me to get it.

In response to Reply # 0

I only buy things that are kind of obscure and that I've had a hard time renting or that I anticipate having a hard time renting in the future. I have maybe ten or twelve videos.

I'm currently trying to find a movie called "Amazing Grace and Chuck." It wasn't the greatest movie in the world, but I often think about it and I use it as an exemplar in a surprising number of conversations. It would be cool to have it. I know it was on video at one time, but not even Facets has it now.

But I know what you mean about pride of ownership. I don't have it with respect to videos or cds (they're indistinguishable from one another) but I do have it with respect to my books, which are first editions.

Peace.

It's both. I agree with both of them.

It's a bad film. And it's one of the best illustrations that I've ever seen of the importance of doing what you can. You know what Gandhi said, "What you do may seem very insignificant, but it is very important that you do it."

I swear when I'm high(on weed that is. I don't do drugs)I catch shit that I didn't catch the sober time around. EX, Soprano's season 3, Tony opens a closet door with a mirror on the outside of it. As he is opening it the mirror reflects the image of Tony's best friend who he had to kill in Season 2 for being a rat. Little stuff like that is why I buy "good" movies and such as opposed to renting them.

There are too many good movies to purchase every damn movie that comes out. Movies can only be truly appreciated in a theater anyway...

Certain films warrant and reward multiple viewings, but if you're missing out on hundreds of beautiful films to watch the Usual Suspects 20 times, shame on you.

Not necessarily. While its nice 2 enjoy the big screen treatment 4 the big spectacle flix (i.e Episode 2, Gladiator, LOTR) alot of the time you miss out on stuff either due 2 the huge audiences laughter or other chit chat. Even if you miss out on some shit on the DVD you can go right back 2 it and even get the words printed out @ the bottom of the screen which I found very helpful in flicks such as Snatch and Sexy Beast.

it'd be like having everyone involved with the making of your favorite album(s) release a companion book with anecdotes and technical info, plus behind the scenes accounts and bonus cuts that didn't make the album.

DVDs are the new film schools, moreso than videos ever were.

In response to Reply # 0

now don't get me wrong cuz i rent also, but i definitely buy more than i rent. i got a dvd player back in december of 2000, so about 15 months ago and i have over 100 DVDs. a small collection in comparison to many, like say m, but that means i buy about 2 DVDs a week.

the thing that people have to understand is that for all the DVDs i've bought my average price per disc is probably around 12 dollars, and m's average is somewhere around 9 bucks per disc ( damn you, m ). for example, just this week i bought Sexy Beast, Kiss Of The Dragon, Made, Chasing Amy Criterion, This Is Spinal Tap, and Blade for a total of 80 bucks. that's about 13 dollars a piece. so really i don't feel as though i waste any money when compared to renting. in addition, i don't just buy every single movie that i see. i buy movies that i know something about or have seen before. actually, i'll buy movies that friends recommend, but only because my buddies and i are tight and we have really similar tastes in movies. do i consider myself as a collector? yes, but i am collecting movies that i like and not everything out there.

blockbuster asks me if i will watch a movie more than once and i answer with a resounding YES!! all my DVDs i've seen at least 2 times. most of them more, and some of them many more times. Crouching Tiger = 15 times, Magnolia = 5 times, Boondock Saints = 4, Fight Club = 5, Goodwill Hunting = 10, Toy Story 1 & 2 = 5, etc etc. i love being able to just pick out a movie, pop it in, and enjoy. also, with many movies like Memento, Magnolia, American Beauty, and Pulp Fiction i catch something different everytime i watch.

next to martial arts and music, DVDs are basically what i spend my time doing. i love watching movies, especially cuz i have a nice Sony WEGA tv with 1 squeeze, and a decent 5.1 DD/DTS sound system in my room so i can enjoy DVDs in all there splendid glory. my entertainment system is pretty sweet for video games too .

yo Leroy, i'm with you, VHS is simply NOT an option anymore. i compare watching a VHS film to watching a DVD without my glasses or contacts. i just cant do it unless i'm at someones house or something and they don't have DVD.

one more thing, i hate me some Blockbuster. they must be getting desperate to start up this new ad campaign.

if you get pissed when a Special Edition comes out for a movie you already own just do what i do. if you have 3 movies like say Almost Famous, Memento, and Traffic that have SE's out or are coming out, just take them to The Wherehouse and trade them for a new movie that you want.

OR

you can sell them on ebay. suckers are always buying old editions of movies.

OR

give to your friends, family, whatever.

at least by doing options 1 and 2 you get something back, whether its money or a new movie.

if it's a movie I really really like, that I know for sure I'll watch again, and it has decent extras I'll buy (e.g. kevin smith movies and ah-nuld flicks, lol)

if it's a movie I like, and the dvd version is movie-only, and it's more than 10 bucks more than the vhs version, I'll just get the vhs version (like I did for Swingers)

if it's something that I've never seen before, I'll rent...and then if I really like it, I'll buy it

It's funny how my whole life, I pretty much got used to VHS, but ever since I got a dvd player, the whole Pan and Scan issue really gets to me...I have to have widescreen now. I cringed when I rented Jurassic Park III from Blockbuster for 4 bucks, and it was fullscreen only...

Even though it's a longer drive, I go to Hollywood Video more often now. I only go to Blockbuster if I'm getting an old movie that's only on vhs.

Exactly. I was the same way until my college roommate explained to me the difference. Kingpin is UNWATCHABLE in fullscreen. Goodfellas and Casino too. My boy had the VHS version of both of them, and I just got up in the first 5 minutes and was like, "Forget this, let's watch it at my house."

I hear you...just so you know there is a widescreen VHS version of both Casino and Goodfellas, these are the ones I own. I generally like Letterbox but I must admit it annoys me sometimes...

Movies that desperately need widescreen treatment are 70mm flicks like "The Parallax View"...It was so depressing to see it on video after seeing it on big screen as a big part of the psychological impact of the film is framing the characters on the extreme edges of the screen...

Did you notice they used a song in that flick that Raekwon sampled 4 the intro 2 Immobilarity?
