"The Official 2016 NBA Prospect Thread 4 Thruthiness and Justivity"

This weekend not only marks the deadline passing for players to decide to stay in the draft or return to school, but also marks the fifth anniversary of Basa making the first Thruthiness and Justivity thread.

As he said five years ago:

"i'm listing all the prospects in this thread...and all you gotta do is reply with your opinion on them. that's all i'm asking. it can be detailed or you can simply say "he gonna be good" or "he gonna be sorry." bottomline is NOBODY is gonna get to pretend they thought someone was good or sorry anymore and have the thread fall outta evidence/existence. nah, dogg. we going on record for real. because bammas on this board STAY LYING!

and if you don't contribute and try to cuban B this thread...GOOD...i don't have to respect or acknowledge your opinion about ANY player from this draft."

So you know the drill. I'll list the prospects, you list your thoughts, as detailed or as basic as you want. As meticulously bias-free as possible or as blindly agenda-driven as you want.

Get on record before these guys play a single NBA game as to how you think they'll pan out. Stake claims, "buy stock," etc.

Absolute worst case scenario, he's Rudy Gay

Cocaine-free Lamar Odom

depends on his attitude. Seems like a spoiled brat.

What gets me is THIS... yet on the other hand, he's an unselfish player

Y'all better hope he doesn't end up being a bigger/stronger Duck Sauce
Jun 22nd 2016

Upside: Paul George. Downside: Gallinari
May 26th 2016
63
^^^I'm in this arena
May 27th 2016

Not a good comp IMO, PG's shooting had to catch up with his defense
May 30th 2016
136
I think he meant what Ingram can become, not what he is now.
May 30th 2016
137
Yeah i still don't view PG as a pure shooter...
May 31st 2016

Best player in the draft. Brandon Knight with better handle...
May 26th 2016

If he's the best player it's a really bad draft
May 27th 2016
105
Being that Knight with a better handle, more range, more..
May 27th 2016
110
He's gonna be 3rd best on an Eastern Conference 6th seed

While I have concerns about the jumper, the defense, and the attitude, they're outweighed by what he brings to the table.

However, when you consider that LSU was godawful defensively and really bad at shooting the 3, and you see how Simmons reacted... and then you consider that the Sixers are godawful defensively and really bad at shooting the 3... put it this way, he is not the type of player that will do it himself.

(Which is really why trading for the 3rd pick and picking Murray would be a great strategy for them, as he's a hell of a shooter, a scrappy defender, and he's far from shy about tossing up the rock-- he can be the scorer to Simmons' creator.)

I was gonna go with Joe Smith but 'Reke is the better comparison because like Simmons, he's a guy who kind of needs the ball in his hands to be most effective but probably won't be the lead dog on a winning team.

But Simmons should watch the Greek Freak to get some pointers on how to maximize his skillset in the NBA.

Ingram is no slouch in those two regards either but those two things still tilt towards Ben. I think the top 2 picks (Ben and Brandon) fit the weaknesses of the two respective teams very well.

Also was reading an article from last summer at a camp where Simmons was guarding both Harden and AD...teams were raving about his defensive ability. Obviously the key with him imo is surrounding him with the proper team culture and environment to maintain that motivation.

Presumably he meant Ingram could be a 20+/7/4 guy who plays strong defense and helps lead his team to deep playoff runs, multiple time All-Star, etc.

Though I agree, Ingram should be a better shooter than George day one, and considering George still has never been known as a stellar outside shooter, I think it raises Ingram's ceiling to potentially above George's (though he'd have to catch up to George's defense/strength to actually pass him).

Better Rashard Lewis. Gets to a couple All-Star games, Maybe All-NBA 3rd teamer here or there. I don't think he ever realizes his full defensive potential or turns into elite level offense player.

Have watched a lot of game tape on him these last few weeks. All in all, he's going to be very good because of his physical attributes combined with his skill-set combined with his mentality.

Physical attributes are the most obvious: 6'9" with a standing reach of over 9'1 (same as Drummond! Incredible) and moves very well for a dude that size. People talk about his weight but I will address that further, a lot of it stemming from typical lazy "analysis". His length and relative speed make him extremely versatile defender, he can shut down space very quickly and we have seen how important that is in a league which continues to evolve toward spacing as priority #1.

Skill-set: First and foremost, the jumper. Great balance on it, consistent release, extremely high release and he can shoot it out of multiple looks...spotting up, off the dribble, off the dribble on a spin, etc. Secondly, his footwork particularly on his triple threat....he utilizes pump-fakes and jab steps extremely well and exposes defender's top foot and then he uses that long first stride to get over it and beat them into the paint. I am concerned about his ability to consistently get into the paint but imo as his jumper becomes feared and with his ability to play off the ball, he will have a lot of driving lanes. Thirdly, and this is addressing the weight part, he is not afraid of contact. When he gets into the lane, he has consistently shown that he will utilize his body to create space and when you have defender's off-balance, you don't need sheer strength. He will add bulk as every 18 year old does but imo this is such an overblown lazy criticism, I'd be far more worried if he was afraid of contact. Fourthly, he can handle the ball and is a willing passer. Just versatile for days which is such a boon for any team.

Mentality: This kid is humble and just wants to play team-ball. From all his comments to his actions on the court (particularly the emotion after Duke was eliminated), you can see his commitment and discipline. He has that intangible when it comes to team culture.

Because not only is he terrific at many things, he really isn't bad at anything. He doesn't have the insane upside of some of the freaks in this draft, but he doesn't have a single real red flag either.

The only thing anyone could be concerned about is the frame, but he went from 169 at the end of his HS senior year to 195 now. I'm really not concerned about his ability to fill out similar to how Durant did. At all.

And Los Angeles would be the *perfect* location for him. He'll put up terrific numbers immediately, and why they may not be as gaudy as some rookies on teams with less talent (Simmons-- and if he lands in Philly too, Murray-- will put up a lot of stats), Ingram will immediately be in the thick of the ROY race, even if players in the East are more likely to beat him to an All-Star bid.

Diet Coke Kevin Durant is really reductive, but I can't think of a better way to describe dude. He shoots, he isn't shy about driving into contact, he's committed on defense and long as fuck, he's insanely fast, he's a smart passer and ballhandler, his IQ and feel for the game are really high... like, I don't know what else to say about him. The skeptics better pray he never reaches 220-225 lbs.

Clarkson, Randle, and particularly DLo are all excellent passers who can play multiple positions...throw Ingram into the mix with his versatility, spacing ability, and his team mindset...combined with a coach in Luke who will be stressing a cohesive cuture, willingness to pass, team sacrifice, and positionless basketball...it's such a great fit. I cannot wait.

He could go combo with time, but why even bother? The kid has scoring instincts better than any guard prospect since Kyrie. He's not just an empty gunner too-- he's a hell of a shooter. He's pressed at times-- but so are all of the gifted scorers. Dude shot 41% from 3 on nearly 8 attempts per game as a fucking 18 year old. I'm betting on that all fucking day long.

He's not an elite athlete, could be faster, more explosive, etc... but frankly, I don't give too much of a shit about that. Dude goes. His defense got a lot better as the year went on too. Love the swagger, love the work ethic. I wouldn't think twice about taking him with the third pick. Worst case scenario, he's a Sixth Man of the Year gunner type who kicks second units in the balls. Best case scenario, he's an All-Star guard.

And if he lands in Philly, where he'd be the only shooter on the fucking roster, I wouldn't be surprised to see gaudy (if less efficient) numbers Year 1. Wouldn't be surprised if he took 14-16 shots per game on that squad.

I guess some would say he is not tall enough to be a full-time 2 but I think that is overrated. A 6'3" guy who can play is better than a 6'6" guy who can't. That said I don't think he is a star, more like a solid starter or rotation guy.

Everyone's already noted that he's long and insanely quick and a stat stuffer and generally the sort of physical specimen you'd ideally want as your point guard. That stuff is all a given. He's got the tools to take it to the rack, to get the ball to the open man, to play defense when he so desires, to murder everyone in transition, etc. I completely understand the hype, and the upside is incredibly obvious. Even if my concerns all come to fruition, you *have* to gamble on a guy with this speed and this body.

However, I have serious concerns about his decision-making. This is a dude who averaged over a turnover every ten minutes the last two seasons. If you put the ball in his hands next year and ask him to be your starting PG from the word go, I wouldn't be surprised by 5+ TOs a game. He also did a lot of dribbling right into the defenses, chucking up bad mid-rangers that badly missed, etc. He makes a lot of young PG mistakes... which you'd hope that a guy who's basically a 22-year-old junior would be getting over by now.

I also don't think he's a terribly good shooter-- I trust him far more when he's driving to the rim. He's improved some as a shooter, but unless his motion gets way more consistent, I'm not convinced he'll ever be a guy who can do more than 44% as a pro-- more likely he's one of those 41-42%ers who likely shouldn't be taking many 3s. He doesn't even shoot 70% from the stripe, which is scary when you hope to project his future shooting prowess.

So I still think he's a Top 5 pick. I think you get early Westbrook with more turnovers and potentially worse shooting-- and most teams could do far worse than that at PG, obviously. You just have to work on him. He has to get more comfortable in the half court. I saw too many games this year in which good defenses gave him the business. One could easily argue that Dunn wasn't even the best player on his team during conference play.

That holds me back from all of the "definitely a star/Top 5/etc" talk. He's got the potential for that, but to get there, heneeds to either (a) improve his turnovers/shooting, or (b) develop a Russy-esque motor in which he wills his way through his weaknesses by being pressed as shit 24/7.

In response to Reply # 101

- shooting and decision-making

Those are the two traits which are teachable, especially
with a guy who CLEARLY HAS court vision and CLEARLY IS
an already decent shooter.

When a guy has those traits, you can teach him how to
be careful with the ball and shoot better. It happens
all the time.

He is EXPLOSIVE.
He has excellent handles.
He hawks on D.
He loves ball.
He can score from all over the court.
He goes to the cup.

He has all the tools. If he was an inch and half taller
and 15 lbs heavier, I'd need a reason why he's not the
next Dwade.

They're all sort of tied to the thesis that Wade was simply better than Dunn in college.

1. Wade is much better from 2 than Dunn in college-- much better at the rim, and an absolute monster in the mid-range. Dunn really isn't that. He gets to the rim, but when he's not there, it's more of a struggle. Wade from a scoring perspective was better as a freshman than Dunn was in four* years.

2. Wade's FT percentage the year before he entered the draft was 78%. The FT% is usually the main indicator that people default to when they try to figure out shooting potential. Dunn couldn't get above 70% from the stripe even by the time he was a senior. Either that means he wasn't working on it... or it means he was, and the work didn't pay off. That sort of shit is a red flag to people. Is it fair? Maybe not-- but free throw percentage is a good indicator of what kind of shooter the majority of players can become.

3. I usually do dismiss the high-turnover thing as "well, he's young, he'll work it out as he he improves"... but two caveats to that here: a) he's really not that young-- he's among the ten oldest players projected to be drafted, and certainly in the top three oldest projected as possible lotto picks, and (b) his turnover rate is much, much higher than any other guard in the draft.

4. I also just watched Providence play a ton this year and last (Big East has the best color commentary teams, imo), and one could argue Dunn wasn't even the best player on his team during conference play, that Ben Bentil did a lot of carrying the team in games where Dunn was struggling some with his shot and his decision-making. To put it in Wade terms: Wade only scored fewer than 15 points three times as a sophomore. Dunn scored less than 15 twelve times. A couple were in games where they didn't really need to play Dunn, it's true-- but many of them were in conference games that were either losses or close victories thanks to Bentil.

I should also point out that calling him "watered-down Russell Westbrook" is hardly an insult, since Westbrook is a motherfucking machine, and as I said in the above post, plenty of NBA teams would love a lesser Westbrook. I just wanted to register my concerns, as I don't think he's a *lock* to be an All-Star type-- the potential is obvious and incredibly high, which is why I'd draft him high. You can't pass on talent like that. But he has some very real work to do to live up to that talent.

I want to end by paraphrasing bshelly here: "Plenty of guys have the potential to be the next Dwyane Wade, but Dwyane Wade is Dwyane Wade because most guys don't make the necessary improvements to become Dwyane Wade." I'd love to see it, as he's electric when he's on... but I think he'll remain a tier below the Wades and Westbrooks, unless he takes a big leap.

He's very high ceiling, but his floor is... yeah.

I'm hedging my bets with in-the-middle, closer-to-ceiling-than-floor, because I can't sell on that awesome ceiling... but I think people are overlooking his tendency toward wild uncontrolled decision-making.

Insanely hard worker whose senior year was wildly more efficient than his other years. Remains to be seen if he's more senior Buddy Hield than freshman through junior Buddy Hield once he gets to the pros, but I wouldn't bet against him.

Needs to work on developing a variety of moves on the drive in order to avoid being primarily a catch-and-shoot guy... but he could do 14-16 PPG just on catch and shoot. Kid is fearless and a hell of worker. Good rebounder for a guard too. Draft him and you've got your starting 2 guard for the rest of his contract.

I don't think I'd go Top 3 with him-- I think anyone considering him that high is buying too much into the "next Curry" hype, which I think is grossly unfair to Hield, as he's slower with worse handles, a lower release point, and a worse distributor than Curry (not that that's saying much, as Curry's elite at all of those things). But New Orleans or Denver should jump on him at 6 or 7. Both would be great fits for him.

Brown interviewed five well-regarded NBA agents to potentially represent him. He ultimately decided to enter the draft without an agent, with the collective bargaining agreement already slotting the salaries for two-year guaranteed rookie contracts (which come with an option for two-year extensions). Brown instead is relying on a unique circle of advisers, including Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas and former NBA All-Star and Cal star Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who made him feel comfortable and confident about not hiring representation.

I'm buying.

135. "Really hard to say. His body is perfect. His game... isn't."
In response to Reply # 6

Like, his body really is exactly what you want in an NBA wing prospect. Speed, athleticism, length, slashing ability, the whole nine. I get why a team will roll the dice. Other positives... he's aggressive. Definitely not a NyQuil. So... that's something! He's a guy who will draw fouls and finish at the cup.

But he's all upside at this point. Really TO-prone. Handle isn't great. Tunnel vision-- his aggressiveness could totally be seen as a fault. It's easy to say he "can't shoot," but I think he's more inconsistent than anything else-- undisciplined. Release all over the place, feet all over the place.

This still isn't great, obviously... but you could see his good and bad fully on display this year. In their biggest wins, he was disciplined, shot well, kept turnovers down-- the blowout of USC, the blowout of Oregon. Even in their win over Arizona, in which he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, he became the primary distributor with Tyrone Wallace hurt, and he racked up 7 dimes. The potential is there, and I was on board with him as a prospect... but then again, he finished the season really badly, getting bad foul trouble in some important games (including in the tournament), looked atrocious in their elimination from the Pac-12 Tournament... you'd like to see improvement by March, not regression into worse sloppiness.

So it all depends on his jumper mechanics and handles, imo. If he never becomes a smart defender and he still turns the ball over more than we'd like, it won't matter if he can make a 3-pointer at a 35%+ clip and get even harder to stop going to the rack. If he fixes those, I'd totally believe that he could be a starter for a long time, and maybe even have All-Star potential... but that's a ways away from where he is now. We won't know if he's a true bust for 3-4 years, but if you're looking for a "true bust" bet in this draft... sadly, this may be him. I'm rooting for him, though. He was granted the gift of a prototypical high-caliber NBA body. It'd be a shame for him to waste it.

I think he fits what they need at the 4. He has Chandler there to work as a mentor.

They'll probably be bad enough that he can get starter minutes in the second half of the year. Perhaps grow with Alex Len as future frontcourt.

Boston's a nice fit but we're trying to win and we have a lot of mediocre guys who'd probably keep him off the court as a rookie.

Defensively, he's got work to do, and I'd like to see him learn to shoot a little better from 3... but man, he's so goddamn good inside. Big and strong, good inside and good from the mid-range. Shot nearly 30% from 3 at age 18/19 as a 6'10 guy, which shows promise. He's a brilliant ball-handler for his size. Great hands, terrific rebounder.

He should watch Kevin Love. Mimic his shot, mimic his passing. (Maybe don't mimic his defense.) If he does that, he could be an All-Star. As more teams start big men who play on the perimeter, Ellenson will prove a terrific asset.

I think he could be a double-double, face-the-basket stretch big by Year 3. Really love his potential, and I'm surprised he's projected to go so low in the lottery.

He's clearly got the offensive skillset and raw talent to be in the NBA. I'm not convinced we'll know just yet what he'll be in three years-- I think teams will continue to take fliers on him until 25 or so. Bigs with a nice face-the-basket jumper are too hot right now for him to drop out. May never be worth his pick, but most players that would've been straight-to-pro picks like Skal usually stick around for over half a decade, even just as role players, because raw talent like that simply doesn't grow on trees.

But I'm not convinced I saw enough to believe he could be an All-Star type, either. Has to get a lot tougher, both physically and mentally, to maximize his potential, and that kind of leap in toughness rarely happens to that degree. I think best-case scenario he's a starting stretch-4 for a really good team-- he might even do better in a lower-expectation environment like that, where a team is looking for a piece rather than a hero.

But the physical attributes are pretty undeniable. Definitely made plays this year on both offense and defense that made me sit up straight. I hope he turns it on.

Odom, Simmons, and Diaw are all way bigger. Valentine's a relatively-unathletic 6'6, but he's just really fucking smart and does everything on offense well. He's also a really underrated shooter-- he can score from basically everywhere on the court. If he was even a *little* more of an athlete, he'd be a Top 5 pick.

But he's slow. He's got nice positional length, but I'm not really convinced he's fast enough to ever play that "point-big" position in the pros. He's also, quiet as kept, really not a good defender.

I think he could start-- like Vasquez that one year for the Hornets, he could really fill it up if put in the right spot. I expect a nice decade-longish career. Not really a star-- but definitely capable of some stat-stuffing seasons.

I think he'd have to work hard to start-- one of those classic good-at-everything, not-great-at-anything guys. To start, he'd need to refine his offensive moves and get a better set of back-to-the-basket skills, or he'd need to get tougher and more consistent down low on defense. Or both.

I get why scouts are in love with him, because he's a monster athlete who also has a good jump shot. Blocks shots, gets steals-- his stats are pretty undeniable.

Yet I have a lot of questions. First off, what position does he play? I assume teams will want him to play on the wing, because that's where he would provide the best mismatches. Inside, he's got a small frame and I'm not impressed by his reach. He's bouncy, but he can be bullied, and defensively, when it comes to standing in front of his man, he kind of, from what I saw, sucks. He's far more likely to either whack the guy or just let him go around. Not much in between.

He fouled out of nearly half his games. I know he's young-- but *half*?!

Like, this is exactly why one-and-done is bullshit. Teams are all like, "We want players to be ready so they'll play a year of ball!" but this kid is a lock top-5 pick who also doesn't strike me as ready to get top-5 results. He strikes me as one of those "we'll check in in 3-to-4 years and see how he's doing" guys... but normally, I'm more inclined to bet on those guys if they're elite at something. And, y'know, if they can stay on the floor.

I get the hype. 6'10 freak athlete who can nail jumpers. But... that's really all he is right now, from what I can tell. (I'll defer to the Washington fans, as I saw less of their guys that pretty much any other projected first rounders.)

first time he ever stepped on the court i looked at my wife and said, "he's a future lottery pick." now, i figured that'd be after another season or two. shocking to see how he's shot up the draft board but his potential IS quite high if he pans out he could be a perennial all star type.

>Yet I have a lot of questions. First off, what position does

I compared him to a more offensive minded Ibaka above (as his floor). On the upper end he could be Chris Webber minus the assists. This is assuming he pans out as the other end of the spectrum is he just never sticks (which i think would be more of an effort issue). He's definitely the best shooting big in the draft. He runs the floor and he's a very good secondary shot blocker. He definitely needs to get stronger, but he's a baby still so that should come w/ normal strength training.

>He fouled out of nearly half his games. I know he's young--
>but *half*?!

The reason for this was sort of 3-fold: first of all, Lorenzo Romar had no fucking idea what his defensive philosophy was all season. He was throwing shit at the wall and seeing what stuck (he shoulda got fired in a lot of fans opinions). Thus, Chriss got put into some bad spots he shouldn't have been in. Next, the Pac-12 officiating is a fucking joke. I know fans like to complain about refs but if you don't watch Pac-12 hoops you're missing a real treat. This isn't some conspiracy shit either, every media person talks about it, coaches talk about it and every fanbase complains about them equally. Lastly, Chriss did do some stupid freshman shit. Getting dumb reach fouls and stuff, or trying to block shots instead of just playing good position defense. He's still raw defensively but with effort and coaching he has the movement and athleticism to be MUCH better.

i agree here. he should have stayed one more year at least (although i'm not sure how much better he could have gotten in the areas he needs to under Romar for another year).

I would look at this guy as a third or fourth most talented player in the draft. Needs to work on quite a few things but has a lot of stuff you can't teach. I don't know about Amare, Kemp, McDyess, etc comparisons but he could be an explosive talent.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Best post moves of any big in the draft, imo. Great footwork, nice soft hands. Shows the potential to be a stretch big too-- his stroke wasn't used a ton, but he's got it. He's also a terrific rebounder-- if I'm not mistaken, either among the best or the best on both ends in college basketball last year. Just has a nose for the rock.

He's not a great athlete or super lengthy, so defense will probably be an issue for him. But he's a really hard worker, not shy at all about contact, and high motor on both ends. I thought he could've come out last season, and he got better. He also fucking smoked Poeltl in their matchup. Love this kid. He'll go Top 10, but I'm not convinced in this draft he shouldn't go closer to 6 or 7.

I think going up into the top 10 is a slight reach but he wasn't going to fly under any radars. Super sub as a third big initially, good starting four later. Needs to extend his range for sure but he is smart, he is intense, he eats glass and he has nice touch around the rim.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Strong potential to be starter-quality on both ends, but he's never blown me away as anything other than a shooter. His playmaking is fine, but his handles aren't great. He's got the length and strength for defense... yet he wasn't a consistent defender in college.

If can stay engaged and improve his handles, he could be a starter in the league, and he's a strong enough shooter that he'll stick off the bench at least... but it's hard in a league where the point guards are so good to bet on a guy to start unless he really stuns you in college.

Stud athlete, totally unafraid. Bouncy, strong, fast. Better than Baldwin on these points. Better handles, too.

Outside of his physical attributes though, he's not a stud anywhere. Up-and-down shooter, not a natural point, not a good defender. Baldwin is definitely the better shooter, the better defender (though also not great), and probably the better natural point. Also, while he's a better athlete than Baldwin, he's not nearly as tall or long. Baldwin will obviously be drafted first... but if he can get either his shooting or his defense consistent, he could potentially end up the better player and/or a starter. From a college perspective, Jackson definitely had the bigger stages, the bigger moments, etc. He may just have the stones for it. He's probably the safer "win now" pick... not sure I'd bet money on either becoming a perennial starter without seeing those deficiencies patched up first.

He's just got the IQ and the knack for doing the right thing. He's shown that he can be a consistently good shooter too.

Could start despite his size if he ends up with the right players on the wing with him. I like his odds to play in the NBA a long time.

I could see a team like Boston or Detroit, a team ready to try to win now, having great success with him. Strong rebounder, good size, good motor, decent mid-range shooter, tough defender, quality team player. An ideal post-lottery pick. I think he has a long career and wouldn't be surprised to see him starting on a good team sooner rather than later, just due to his ability to support a good team's stars.

Freshmen guards simply don't come in and put up 39% from 3 and 52% from 2. This kid can flat-out shoot. He could be a better creator, but he's simply one of the best shooters in the draft already. Combine that with his high motor, good athleticism, great positional rebounding, and NBA lineage? Yeah, this kid is being grossly slept on.

Don't be surprised if he ends up better than several of the lottery players.

This year was a nightmare, but there's a reason he was such an elite prospect. I'd take him after the lotto, sit him down, and tell him, "Look, don't worry about shooting the ball. You're here to fill a role-- play gutsy defense, block shots, and grab every rebound. Do this, and you'll play for 10-15 years in this league and make a shitload of money."

I like the kid's odds at succeeding. His degree of success relies primarily on how hard he embraces his role. (I mean, he's so raw that he could end up a decent offensive weapon too, but his goal is to grab a Tristan Thompson-esque max deal thanks to his rebounding and defense, not to shoot the ball 10+ times a game.)

I cysed him a year or two ago after a couple of impressive efforts... but goddamn this dude simply hasn't improved. He is what he is: a terrific NBA body who is good when he plays at the rim... but he's a blah rebounder, an okay defender, bad at passing out of the block when he gets into trouble, very inconsistent motor (dude disappeared in *several* big games entirely), and not a great shooter. Like... what is there to bet on here? What does he do that's elite other than "be big"?

Maybe I'm just burned by my early cysage. A team should take him very end of first or beginning of second just because of his body in hopes that they can crank up his motor/effort, but I'm not sold that he's anything more than a bench big. I could easily see him out of the league in a few years if he doesn't either get a better face-the-rim offensive set or a higher motor.

Can't defend his position at the NBA level because he'll be, as MBJ puts it, a "Gumby" his entire life (though, as I pointed out, Gumby has broader shoulders than Brice), but he plays with effort, has a nice little mid-range jumper, and can jump out of the gym. He'll be a fine 9th man for as long as he maintains his bounciness.

If a shit franchise like the Kings get him, he's doomed.

If he goes to the Celtics at 16, I think he could carve out a nice niche.

Also, not sure what his attitude is like. Will he put in the work?

He's an absolute wildcard.

Really limited. He's strong and has good touch around the rim, and... that's it. Not a great rebounder, average defender, footwork is blah, can't get shit done against players of his own size and strength (which should be most people in the pros).

You'd draft him for his body and roll the dice that he can develop, since he's young... but he feels very 10 mpg, end-of-bench to me. I'd go top of second or mid-second, depending who's left.

He can get his own shot, can shoot off the dribble and has deep range and a quick release.

Will finish better as he gets stronger, and has to improve shot selection.

He's got some JR Smith/Nick Young no conscience in him, but as the season went on he started showing much better passing ability.

Not a fan of his offensive game. Just feel like everything is a bit too slow for the pros but if he works hard, he could become a pro scorer. More likely a three and D guy but he needs to be more consistent on D for that to happen.

He was a volume guy last year. Decent creator, but a wildly inconsistent finisher. His shooting percentages, especially from mid-range, are *terrible.* He ended the season hot, so he's taking advantage, and my response to that is, "Fucking good for him." Strike while the iron is hot-- because if he came back next year and *still* shot the ball so inconsistently, he wouldn't be a Top 20 pick. Instead he'll go in the 15-17 range, in all likelihood. People like to say, "But if he shot way better, he'd be a much higher pick!" That's true... but that's a multi-million dollar gamble.

Great arms and hands, but not a great athlete. No clue how he'll be as a man-to-man defender because Syracuse, but he's got the range to be disruptive and he's quick enough on his feet.

As SH said above, I could see him becoming a 3-and-D guy... but he's currently not a consistent three-point shooter and I don't really know how good his defense is. Tough to bank on him-- you're basically betting on the "he's a smart kid, he'll figure it out" angle... which I could see, but I'd have loved to have seen better results on the court during the regular season and not just the last couple of games of his college career.

In response to Reply # 179

He shot the ball well in ACC play and NCAA tournament play.

He had a HORRIBLE month of December for whatever reason. But I think he's a better 3 point shooter than his season % would indicate.

In response to Reply # 184

I forget the exact numbers, but I remember seeing that no one drafted in the first round has *ever* shot as badly from 2 in the year they were drafted as Richardson has. In the games I saw where he struggled, he forced a lot of bad shots, and he's just not the type of guy I think has the burst to get to the rim in the pros.

I'm just not necessarily sold by what I saw. He clearly can get hot and he likes big moments... but there've been a lot of college players who did that but couldn't deliver the consistency offensively in the pros. Maybe if he shot 78% from the FT line or something, I could say, "Well, at least his stroke is working consistently..." but even there, he's up and down.

It's not like his shit is broke. He just needs to make better shot choices, get the reps in to improve those percentages, and he could be a 3-and-D guy. Which would be of value in the mid-first, if he can become that. I'm just not sold on mid-first after seeing him a bunch this year-- the way he ended his season showed promise, though.

he just doesn't shoot the 3 yet like Jamal can NOW.

but if you compare him to when Jamal came out of Michigan they are mirror images.

then add in that Jamal is his mentor and they went to the same H.S.

The FT% disparity alone shows that Crawford's consistency of form was already there.

I don't know a lot about Murray-- I'd still take him mid-first based on the little I have seen-- I just wanted to dispute the claim that they're identical shooters coming out of college. Crawford's 3P% wasn't at its potential yet, but everyone knew he could shoot based on the stroke, whereas that's the biggest question mark around Murray.

I don't doubt they could be used in similar ways in the pros, though.

not even sure what i was trying to say when i posted that.

yeah, jamal's shot was much better in HS and college.

Murray's shot shouldn't be THAT hard to fix. he's one of those kids that was shooting with "swag" so he's actually angled 45 degrees instead of just facing the basket. if someone just gets him to face the basket his percentage should jump off that alone.

watched a half game each of Simmons and Ingram. Simmons obviously has the much higher ceiling but also has high Nyquil(c)O_E potential. Ingram could be a solid starter on a good team but he'll never be a star.

I like Brice Johnson, with a few more sammiches I think he could be a good in a bamma role on the right team.

I'm rooting for Thon Maker also.

He's one of those dudes that I believe can go fill a roster spot *immediately* due to his rebounding and his defense. Love his body, love the hustle.

Similar to my comments about Diallo (though he may have more offensive upside than Diallo, really), I think he could make the decision to commit himself to being a rebound/defense guy and make millions of dollars over the next 12-15 years. If he wants to come out and shoot a ton... just... don't. lol. At least not right away. Work on it in practice, bust it out in a couple of years.

I had him going to Phoenix in my mock, because I think he could learn a ton from Tyson Chandler.

I agree on immediate playing time, and the later in the 1st he goes, the better for him. Get some limited, but real, minutes in important situations; defend and rebound; and bring the rest along.

Whenever I see reports of a 7-foot Euro that loves drawing contact and playing physical, I always cyse him, since 9 times out of 10, the reports are "he's got the tools, but he shies from contact and he's fucking awful at defense."

This is a 19 year old 7 footer, 250 lbs, 7'3 frame, who loves playing physical and had one of the highest PERs in his league history, a league that recently gave us Nikola Jokic and Jusuf Nurkic, both of whom had similar profiles.

I'm in.

He obviously gave me a lot of reasons to be scared since I cysed him a couple of years ago. He's a guy that could stick solely based on rebounding and defense. If you're a guy with that body who can rebound and play defense, then you should be able to stick. I'd take him end of the first.

I'm biased and rooting like hell for him. But I think he can stick around for awhile and be a productive bench player. He's versatile and athletic, works and plays very hard and will get better. He's gotta shoot the ball well at the next level to make it though....he went from a non-shooter for the first 2 1/2 seasons of his college career to a guy who shot the hell out of the ball from 3 his last year and a half. Was not a good FT shooter though.

If SVG signs the 4 he wants, that leaves Johnson, Harris, and Marcus at the 3, with KCP, Bullock, and Johnson again at the 2.

His best bet is to defend his ass off and try to siphon off minutes at the 2. If he can spell KCP and not have a big drop defensively, he'll play.

But realize it's going to be tough competition.

The defensive side will be interesting....he has the physical tools and he was very good in the zone, but sometimes the zone is looked at as a detriment when it really doesnt matter. If you have the physical ability and aptitude to defend well in zone, it should carry over to man to man. Gbinije is athletic and coachable, so it would seem he could be a solid defender in the NBA.

He's one of those dudes who was a really strong college player. I was really hurt when he left Duke-- until Derryck, maybe the most painful loss to transfer to date-- because I really thought he'd be terrific. And I didn't even think he'd do that point-forward thing as well as he did in school-- never even envisioned it.

That said, he's not athletic enough or skilled enough to do that in the NBA. You're right-- he has to be a ~40% shooter type or an absolute lockdown defender. Being a good passer/creation for your position isn't enough-- scores of terrific college players came and went or never were in the pros because they were all-around good but not great at that one thing. The potential for the shooting is there with him... but I'm not sure I'd bet on him, sadly. I'd have needed to see more in school. I'm rooting for him, though.
