"Hobo/Hiero tidbit"

jacked from soulstrut.com:

For about 6 months there was a "hip-hop cafe" on the Berkeley/Oakland border called "Ya Mamas Cafe". They served rice crispy treats, cooked stuff, and cereal. Of course they let dudes burn the walls and front windows. Had performances. Boxcar Sessions release party was there. So anyways, after the hobo/heiro battle, one or more members of heiro were caught lunchin (literally and figuratively) and hurled through said windows. Cafe closed not long afterwards.

Dark skinned... hella big, "he will" hit a nigga in his jaw then embark in, to another journey, if wan't to step to "him", you better earn these props... (for those who remember the battle)

I remember hearing about this back in the day (and i'm in NYC, but shit, niggas was loving Hiero out here for a min)..
Hiero took losses on all fronts.. it put a major dent in their crews credibility, and oddly enough i don't think really helped the Hobo's either

Yo, This is Casual aka Smashrockwell, these are some inserts from my not yet tittled book,...
that i just started writing today, when i realized that inquiring minds wanta know...........

When that Beef started it was between Casual and Saafir, and it really started because i missed a session be on his album.(this is the first time i told anyone this.) Truth is,I asked Saafir to be on my album because he was my boy at the time. But in the short time we kicked it, i seen he was a Fake ass nigga. I mean, I met Saafir through A+. I needed some weed one day, and Plee was like, my nigga got bomb,..i was like , Who,..plee was like, this nigga safir, he be trying to rap and shit. im like cool. Safir was a "street nigga" so when we met we was cool like that from the gate. i mean, i was blowing my money on weed and he had fatsacks so we started to see each other often. We started to kick to. That nigga had a clean ass white 72 Malibu,..... I had a 80 Z28 Camaro, and we was on some "nigga your shit aint as tight as mine!" shit. Chillin thou,..... now here comes the bullshit.First out, it took me a minute to notice this, but this nigga was bashing 2 Pac(Pac was alive then).I would have been like, yeah whatever but this nigga and tupac was really boys.He would tell me stories about how pac punked out and he had to whoop some niggas for him, hella shit like that but im sitting there like, damn i thought this nigga was pac dogg? anyway his boastfullness and his betrayal qualities were starting to surface,.. I was like "I aint fuckin with dude know more"(subconsciencly). this is about the time he asked me to be on his album,......... I tell no lie, when he called, i was layed up.he asked me to come to the studio at bout 8,..... i was like alright,....but i really was thinkin,... damn, i dont wanta go. i called that dude back at about 7;45 and threw some drama about how i couldnt make it and he should work on something else. he was like whatever. a few days later i got a call from Saafir, I was at Domino's house playing video games. I answered the phone,"hello"? he was like "blood you wrong fa fakin on me" i was like " what?! (still talking calmly) he said "you made me lose money the other night". My senses went of instantly. Before i replyied I was thinking "damn, he trying to play me, i fucked up", and to keep it real, i replyed (verbatim) "Dude you putting to much on it". This is when the calm broke. "To much on it!!!!!!!!! nigga what!!! how im putting to much on it etc. blah blah nigga blah nigga!!!!!!!!" next think i know,.... i got beef with these niggas.

Now every time i seen them nigga in the street, i was with some nigga that they probably didnt expect me to know. to keep it real, this shit was big, it was all in the streets, every body i knew was talking about this beef i had with Saafir. Niggas started really fonkin'.The cold part is,..... them nigga was from Fresno,I was born and raised in Oakland. dont get it twisted, Fresno is Gansta but when you start some beef with a well know artist,in the streets of his home city, its gonna be problems. What everyone didnt know is, me and Saafir would speak on occasions. If I seen that nigga in the club, I would always address him first, like "Whats up Saffir?" he would be like ,"sup nigga" and we would go on about our business,no prob. but when other members of our crews seen each other there would be confrontations. lmao!@Uniggas.com
There was all typa shit,...... (Buy the Book>when it come out!)................................

Saffir came to my house in North Oakland a few days before the battle, bout 8:30.pm. i looked throw the peep hole and said,......Hell haw!!!!!! i went and grabbed that little 380 he was rappin bout, and tucked it in the pocket of my Hiero hoodie. I opend the doe', this nigga was like "blood i need to holla at you", i was like ,"alright". we went outside,...im thinking its about to get grimmy,.... i see this nigga got his homie sitting in the car bout 15 feet away,.......i got my hand in my pocket,........heart justa' pounding,..... then this nigga gonna start talking about his rap strategy!!!!!, "im gonna kick some written shit Cas how you comin?"!! This was the weirdest hip hop beef moment. i was like "what!!, im coming freestyle dogg"...........

The night of the imfamous Wake up show battle, dudes heard that and was coming out the woodworks!!! i tell know lye, when we entered the studio room before the battle it was hiero and hobo. After that two hour broadcast we exited the studio and it was all typa niggas, nigga from the block, niggas i was raised with, dudes i hadnt seen since the second fuckin grade was like " you alright my nigga?" Seagram(R.I.P), a local rapper at the time was in the lobby of KMEL Punking them niggas!!! Dudes road all the way from Vallejo to San Fran. to hold me down. it was big.The only thing that was in the back of my head was, them horrible freestyles i was kicking. i was so dissapointed in Kmel, Tech, Sway,Saffir, and mostly, Myself. I dont know why but i felt exploited. Its really was the single biggest event in Wake up Show History, and i didnt see how me or Saffir would benifit, after i was like,.. thats it?!! did the beef end with the broadcast? damn was this shit staged?written ass raps? hell naw!.....

Thats wild.... everyone needs to see this, cause every few months on just about every hip hop message board i have ever been on, there is a post with questions regarding the Hiero/Hobo battle. And word of mouth was always that Hiero was getting punked. Good to finally hear your some of your side of the story.
I have heard that you were a little salty that niggas were on Saafir's dick after he spit on your album. Is that true?

Yo, thanks for taking time out... y'all cats (Hiero) are inspiration... First time a lot of us NYC niggas saw "Thats When You Lost"/"Thats How It Is" we was like, oh hell naw... these cats look like they from out here, and they are spitting something ridiculous.
I'm def. checking for a new Casual album, i can only fuck with like half of "He Think He Raw", but i bump that "Truck Driver". When you rock in NYC i'll be sure to come thru. Haha, word I even used one of your lines from "Later On" as a hook to a joint i did.

If you really do write the book (you probably bullshittin), you need to talk about the Snupe fallout, and talk about what happened between y'all and Fellowship, cats are always asking about that shit as well..

that Saafir having the tightest verse on "Fear Itself", the Hobos winning a lyrical battle on stage, Saafir stealing Casual's wallet on that same stage, the Hobos winning a lyrical battle on the radio, having all of the crews' neutral homies jump to be down with the Hobos, and the Hobo's physically manhandling Hiero on the streets of Oakland signifies a clear-cut win for the Hobos, yep, I'm gonna keep reminding you.

I actually have no beef with Hiero whatsoever...the blind, knownot follower fans of Hiero however...y'all are customers.

>dude, your funny.i cant speak fa nigga in my crew who never
>intended to get caught up in my beef,

He battled on the air, so he became fair game. I'm not saying I'm happy that he got thrown through a window. But when you pop shit you can't back up...

>but dude,... in the
>streets of Oakland them nigga aint shit. dont know body know
>them niggas?

I ain't saying they're kingpins. But at least when I lived in the Bay they were visible on the streets. I used to bunmp into Hobos all of the time...same with Boots, the Journeymen, even Fanatik and Planet Asia had more of a street presence than y'all. It's your town, respect due, you grew up there. I'm just saying...

>how you gonna play me? nigga im a muthafuckin
>boss. i saved Saafirs life on more than one occasion. on
>some real ass oakland shit nigga.

Props then for that.

>Saffir stealing my wallet? who made that up?

That's what I heard. He removed it from your pocket and soon enough revealed it to the crowd. You saying it's only a rumor?

> Saffir having the dopest verse on my album?lol

Your album was damned good...he just came a little tighter.

>Losing a radio Battle? thats your opinion.

That's a common opinion.

>even you must
>realize the true parameters of a battle, right? Where are
>they? Us we just purchase a million dolla faculity, after
>extending our distribution deal for another 3yrs so we can
>keep bringin haters like you this Real shit. nigga

Good for y'all. But y'all really got smoked in that battle back then, and have acted like snivelling ninnies ever since. You yourself didn't really play yourself as bad as say Tajai or Pep Love did, so I've never really been mad at you. But c'mon, all you gotta do is listen to the recording of the battle, be honest with yourself, and the victor becomes blatantly obvious.

like i said before, Saafir bring writtens to the battle
is like bringin a gat to a fist fight..
and even with his writtens, it still wasnt a clear cut
victory for Saafir..
he shouldve demolished Cas, but the jury's still out
on the victor

that is a bullshit analogy. It ain't even the same thing. First off, there are never rules in a mic battle unless you set rules. No one set rules that everything had to be freestyled. Secondly, Hiero members did pull gats on the Hobos after the battle. Of course the Hobos got away unscathed...and y'all wonder why things like Pep Love getting thrown through a window happened later...

LOL

actually I haven't even heard the wake up show battle (or Casual's album, for that matter), though I love both Third Eye Vision and Full Circle (obviously), I just think it's hilarious that for once one of your pretentious-ass "factual opinions" that you consider other people idiots for not holding is being challenged (by one of the artists themselves, no less)

does anyone have a link to that battle though? or should I just seek it?

Plan B (RIP) did a 12" in 92 with MC Pooh and Saafir called Qwest 4 Survival. In addition Saafir also did a solo track on the record called Runnin from 5-0.

Also everyone knows that Saafir and 2Pac were dancers and part-time MC's for Digital Underground. So GTFOOHWTBS!

He's on that album (1993) & the pictures more than even Money-B. Not ta mention that Sleuth, Pee-Wee, JZ, & all them was all considered part the DU back then...

That's cool that ya didn't let sh*t get out of hand on your side, that's real. But ya can't kid yaself & think muthaf*ckkas didn't do the same on THEY part too, because if muthaf*ckkas was getting thrown thru windows then they obviously was tryingta get it poppin'... Luckily they probably realized just like YALL that sh*t didn't need ta get that way & stopped the side-jumpers from the worst.

Lastly, ya'll DID get taken by the Wake-Up Show, on both ya'lls sides, as far as not taking advantage the battle marketing-wise fa yaselves... That was landmark. Rap History. You coulda pressed up records, concerts, & sold hella merch off that sityation... But oh well though, if ya knew then what ya know now, right?

Reality is Saafir having the best verse on "Fear Itself" is a matter of opinion. Like all of the other events occurring are also opinion and whether who got beat up or stole what is up to speculation unless you were there and saw these events with your own two eyes. Did you see any of this stuff or is it just a matter of rumor or he said she said? But what is fact is Hiero still puts out music whether its quality or not is matter of opinion also. Saafir however has not put out music of any quality whether good or bad in years. How exactly do you find Hobo music? Do I have to go to one of these cats house and listen to a tape in their basement? So one company is still a thriving business and the other company has completely gone under. Or maybe they are sooooooooooooooooooo underground now no one else really knows they exist except the people who are REALLY in the know (i.e. Archaic). So I guess they are KEEPING IT REAL. So any more posts such as "Saafir can bench press Del", "Hobo Junction stole Opio's mountain bike while he was at Wendy's", "Pep Love wears ankle socks and the Whoridaz wear long socks" are all pretty ridiculous.

I recommended it...the club was packed. The sound sucked all night, which was the fault of the club. But regardless Encore and Little Brother still came tight. Hiero on the other hand simply took turns screaming on their mics like retarded guinea pigs.

I've seen them perform like 10 different times over the years and that ATX show was the worst one since I had seen Living Legends water down the stage at Maritime Hall so when Hiero came out they were literally slipping on their asses.

That freestyle argument of y'all's has already gone down as one of the whiniest claims in all of hip hop battle history. If Saafir broke your so-called rules, then maybe you should have called Opio's dad the lawyer on him.

And now you're bragging about folks shooting at Hobos after the battle. C'mon Cas, get a grip. I didn't comment on how wack it was that you mentioned toting your .380 when Saafir supposed strolled right up to your front door. So please don't add further fuel to that fire.

Think about it, Casual just explained that this beef had gotten serious to the point where people in Oakland was really getting amped about it. Three days before the battle, Saafir shows up at his house, and they supposed to be beefin. Casual sees one of Saafir's boys in the car, not knowing what either of them is up too. Still, he answers the door.

Hell yea Cas, open the door with your .380 in your hoodie pocket, with one finger on the trigger. For the fact that Casual said he knew Saafir was a street nigga, he didn't know what kind of bullshit Saafir was on when he opened that door. Luckily for both of them, Saafir was on some other bullshit talking about rap strategy, and no one got hurt that night.

the only thing that made Cas think that Saafir was going to pull some gangsta shit on him was his own paranoia. And that's part of the reason that made Saafir's commentary during the KMEL battle so hard-hitting. Hiero dudes for the most part came from well-to-do backgrounds in the Oakland hills. Meanwhile Saafir had previously spent time homeless, breakdancing for spare change at Fisherman's Wharf among other street-oriented endeavors. In a nutshell Saafir naturally had the street-credibility that Hiero cats would have paid good money for. So when Saafir said shit like "robbin niggas like you that went to Bishop O'Dowd" it really hit a nerve with both Hiero themselves and the many of Bay folks who for years had watched Hiero grasp at any straws that would even remotely confirm that yes, we are as hard core Oakland as Too $hort, Richie Rich, Spice 1, and ultimately Saafir.

Doggz, I'm not even tripping off of what you just responded with. I'm looking at it like this...

If me & you are supposed to be beefin, and you come to MY house uninvited, unexpected, etc, with a nigga sitting in a car, I'mma do the same thing Casual said he did. Imma get my gun, I'mma put that shit in my pocket and I'mma answer the door & see what the fuck you want. Nigga, we beefin what the fuck you coming to my house for? Why the fuck are you knocking on my front door, what the fuck do YOU really want. Those questions would be going thru my mind, especially if I know you a street nigga like Casual said he knew about Saafir.

I'm sure this is what was prolly goin thru Cas' mind as he answered the door, cause that's what would be going thru mine. Fuck street cred dog, we talking life or death now because you coming to my house and we supposed to be beefin! Like I said, luckliy for both of them, Saafir was on some Rap Strategy shit and no one got hurt that night in question. I don't advocate violence, but, I understand how some bullshit can get taken to another level, luckliy for both of them, this didn't.

Secretly packing a piece for protection in a tight spot is the work of an og...so on that I understand where Cas is coming from, and I have done similar things in similar situations.

BUT talking about that shit...even after the fact is some bitch shit. Apparently Saafir knew Cas was packing anyway, so it wasn't that much of a secret from jump. But something we all should know about guns by now is that noone should ever know you are holding one until the time comes to pull it out and pull the trigger on it. Cas obviously failed that portion of his Lessons from the Streets 101 and I've got no qualms calling him out on it.

I will say that your reasoning is the most asinine point to bring to an argument. Let the niggas from Oakland and the bay area deal with who's from where and who had an upper class upbringing, etc, etc. All music fans care about is who's doper, and who's putting out quality music. Edge..Heiro. And just cause a nigga from the suburbs don't mean they can't hold they own. I done seen the supposed hardest niggas from the city get they ass whipped from a suburbanite on some ol' gangster posing tuff guy shit.

who it was exactly posing on the hardcore tip...Casal had the .380 in his pocket when Saafir came by, Hiero fools were the ones busting caps outside the studio of KMEL, Hiero were the ones saying that Saafir was from Fresno, etc.

Most of the stuff that Saafir wound up saying on that same tip was merely in response to Hiero trying so damned hard all of the time to be perceived as hardcore. And that's exactly what made Saafir's comments out to be so hard-hitting.

Personally I don't care where a person is from...just be comfortable with who you are. And that's NOT what I have seen from Hiero...they're forever working to embellish their "street cred".

Hardly.

>, the
>Hobos winning a lyrical battle on stage

I wasn't there, so I can't say. But I'll take your word for it, assuming you were actually there. Because otherwise, it's all wives tales. These things tend to get blown out of proportion.

>, Saafir stealing
>Casual's wallet on that same stage

What does that have to do with anything? Wow Saafir stole Casual's wallet, therefore he's a better MC? C'mon.

>, the Hobos winning a
>lyrical battle on the radio

The one on the Wake Up Show? What are you smokin? Casual ripped Saafir a new asshole. Saafir was spittin' writtens and still not saying anything.

>Hobo's physically manhandling Hiero on the streets of
>Oakland

Again, what does this have to do with who's better MC's? I bet three quarters of the guys slinging drugs on the corner could beat the shit out of Nas, Jay, Rakim, Pos, Q-Tip, Redman, but does that mean he's a better MC? Of course not.

>signifies a clear-cut win for the Hobos

What would signify a clear cut win for Hieroglyphics is that they're still going strong, and Hobo Junction are doing... what? Hiero still releases their music and on the indy scale does strong numbers and is always touring. Seems like that should be the deciding factor. Not "they whooped their ass in the street yea!"

I really don't get what the fuss was ever about with Saafir. I've never heard the guy spit anything that made me want to reach for the rewind button. Ever. His biggest break was Xzibit including him in Golden State Project, and now that that has fallen by the wayside and X is more up on the Strong Arm Steady shit, he's probably back to bagging groceries.

No doubt...there is so much revisionist history going on in this thread by people working on the behalf of Hiero that it is quite sad.

But for those of us who were either there or knew enough about the issues surrounding the battles...um, we know better.

Folks really ought to peep the thread in full over at soulstrut.com for some more realistic analysis from informed, yet unbiased sources.

that being said as an artist myself I always have been interested in youre busines model of how yall got it set up. what kind of marketing/promotion team do you have? what have been your most effective forms of advertising? how have you capitilized on reaching your fanbase (mostly white college kids from my expierence at a Hiero show).

if you could give us some info or refer me to someone who could assist some of Okap's starving artist's like myself it would be greatly appreciated

If you from the bay you will know that this battle didn't do nothing positive for the hip hop scene.

I personally didn't think the battle was all that tight from both sides. And this is coming from someone on Hiero's label. Just knowing how Cas and my niggas spit, they didn't come tight that night. And Saafir came with some faulty ass writs. So it was two hours of bullshit that didn't have to go down really. And for all this shit about Hiero falling off, it's cats in Hobo junction or at least affiliated with them that was stripping in gay clubs to make ends meet. REAL TALK. In the meantime, this fool Cas got two albums out and don't have to work. (Yeah I'm hatin' nigga! LOL)

So you can take it for what it is.

from soulstrut.com again, but here's an account from soneone over there in response to Oliver Wang saying that Hiero won the battle that pretty much sums up what so many on here are hiding from":

Oliver - Heiro had it??? Dogs, you need to relisten. Saafir demolished that entire crew. But, there was a lot of inside commentary in the rhymes, perhaps you weren't "privy to the new shit" as they say. I think dudes who know the real story behind the crews will universally say that Heiro took an L... shit, I've even heard dudes in Heiro say they took an L.

Wow, so dudes are really like, "paycheck said this"??? Thought this was fairly common bay hip-hop lore. anywhoooo

Yeah Saafir's shit was written. He kicked basically the same rhymes at the Crash Palace. But dude, he straight humiliated them on some serious, dropping info, names, family history, etc. and it was on radio and taped by tons of people. Game over. Heiro was talking afterwards about how it wasn't nothing, they were signed so it didn't matter, they were on, they went up there drunk as fuck and was just fucking around on the mic. So I really don't have any sympathy when dudes are like, "oh it was written". It's a battle! There is no "fair". This is going into that whole system of rules that was set up by these 90s dudes - as far as I know old school battles had NO "must be off-the-head" rule to them. To me, Heiro's career took a definite turn at that point, where the whole underground thing kind of split. I want to hear the opinions of other folks who were around at that time, because I saw it one way but I'd like to hear how others did.

Bottom line, all this "raised in Oakland" is bullshit because grass valley east oak skyline hills area is not bringing it to dogtown/lower bottom/acorns area. That was some tough talk that dudes really couldn't back up. Dudes were trying to pin that Fresno shit on Saafir but hollering from nice ass homes in more quiet areas of the east.

Without getting to deep, there was no "moment to regroup"; there was chaos when certain member or members of Heiro got jawed. Outside of the studio, there where guns pulled by Heiro members, then passed to street dudes because rapping dudes didn't want to pull the trigger.

So much was made of the fact that Saafir wasn't selling, when to me he made a better album than any one member of Heiro ever did. His track on Casual's album to me was the best rhyming on there. But Heiro really showed their ass by coming up there and not coming with heat. Telling that Del wanted no parts of that and (from what I understand) didn't show up. But I'm glad it wasn't limited.. some of the best exchanges were between Mic T and Tajai, Opio was the only Heiro dude really coming with it, and all the town shit that Saani kicked was insane. That dude the badman (?) straight laced some shit so hard that Casual had to come back with, "you can't rap, I guess you must be a gangster".

As for Ya Mama's Cafe... as far as I know Casual wasn't involved, it was other dudes.

I respect your opinion dog. But I have to say that the idea that battling in the bay back then was all about coming off the head. Straight up. So to downplay Saafir coming with writtens, and STILL falling off and not rhyming half the time is wack. To be honest with you. If Saafir had come with writtens and actually rode the fuckin beat for more than half a bar, you'd have a little validity to your opinion. But Saafir didn't do much more than say a bunch of personal shit into the mic. Some of it was funny, but just not rhyming. I'm sorry. If that's battling to you, cool.

And don't get it twisted, hiero didn't come tight at all in my opinion. Especially considering how they can REALLY get down. I've been on the bus with these cats and sat up there and listened Cas kill it for hours straight. Pep and Tajai too. They didn't come fresh at all that night. So it goes both ways.

I always look at a battle from the standpoint of where the end up after the fact. Hiero took a hit. But where the fuck is hobo? I mean, seriously.

In the end, the bay took an L. Because if Hiero or Hobo was going to battle anybody, it should have been a crew from outside of the bay. It just set our shit back and was a negative for the bay scene.

ever set the precedent that battles had to be of a freestyle format? That's right, NO ONE...that is before Hiero tried to posthumously make such a claim.

Plus if you look at California at large, it was the GoodLife that had previously set such a standard...BUT ask any OG Goodlifers and they'll tell you in a second that Saafir easily won the KMEL battle.

That's because some of y'all new schoolers, in your feeble attempts to bite, took the GoodLife concept way too literally...and now you're pissed because Hiero got burned for doing just that.

Plus if you're a good enough emcee listeneres shouldn't be able to tell if your verse was previously written or not. So while Saafir did fall off on his planned rhymes just enough to confirm that some of his stuff was pre-written...he had already said before he started that he'd be kicking some written rhymes. Therefore there were no secrets to his presentation...only better results than that offered up by the "cat in the hat" styles of Hiero. It was a stategic decision on the behalf of Saafir and it worked to a tee...especially considering that plenty of his shit was improvised that night as well. He simply brought more flavor and credibility to the battle, end of story.

And c'mon, Core, I know you're down with the Hiero camp nowadays, but don't act like you don't know the deal. You ain't fooling me with this rah rah shit at all.

What battles have ever had strictly freestyle requirements? None...they have always been a mix of both. In some cases with MC's even tricking listeners into thinking that verses were freestyled just because they were freshly written rhymes that noone had heard before. Again in California the GoodLifers were the first ones to really push that idea, and even still they have never been that literal with the concept to the point that they would actually come to a battle unprepared. And that's what Hiero did that fateful night...they were so full of themselves that they thought people would put their patheticly simplistic rhymes on a pedastal just because they were freestyled. It's like they wanted to win a battle of music on a technicality...as if you could the battle devil on fiddle and then say "hey, no fair, you didn't come up with the line that beat me on the spot". Fuck that, you still lose...with your whiny asses.

Saafir not only said on the mic before he started that he would be kicking some written verses, he also went to Cas's house days before the battle to tell him just that. That is showing respect...he wasn't trying to hide his hand at all. Cas should have written some shit of his own...and it's not Saafir's fault that he didn't.

Dog who are you? Seriously. I mean, I'm not even into arguing online. But you are coming at me like you actually know me or something. You have called me a biter, a new jack and a Hiero dickrider in one post and for the life of me I have know idea who you are. It's one thing for you put your opinion out there as to what the ENTIRE hip hop scene in the bay area was thinking about the Hiero/Hobo battle. That's fine. We can agree to disagree on all that. But you should chill with making assumptions about cats you don't know.

The only thing I ever said you might have bitten from the GoodLife was the idea that any battle rap must be 100% freestyled. And yes, that is a new jack concept.

And who am I? Someone who knows enough about the Bay that if you would have been speaking with your neutral contemporaries at the time of the KMEL battle that they would have laughed in your face for thinking that Hiero took it. And you know that too.

You have no idea who I am or who I was back then. I didn't fuck with the Goodlife like that. If you listened to my music, you'd know my shit ain't even in the same vicinity of what they do. To completely different paths. And again, battling in the bay was completely different than battling anywhere else on the planet.

You know what's funny about this whole shit? I listened to that shit last night and there were aproximately 3 good rhymes throughout that whole exchange. Saafir got one off, Cas got one off near the end right after Saafir came weak with the accepella. And Mike T was aiight. But other than that, the shit was weak. Period. If you think rhyming off beat and repeating lines is dope, FREESTYLE OR NOT, then that's on you. You thought it was hot and saafir ripped. I thought it was weak and have SEEN the affect it has had on our scene and KNOW that no one won. Hiero looked bad, Hobo looked like they couldn't rhyme, and the bay looked like a bunch of backstabbing ass haters. Straight up.

But you know me and my neutral folks, right?

you ain't sposed to spit writtens in battles. you can drop fragments, and most battle rappers do have plenty of material that they can summon while flowing off the top, but pure writtens? hell naw.

i can freestyle my ass off, and my shit may sound tighter than OTHER cats' writtens, but it would not fuck with my writtens. you ain't posed to battle with some shit that's off of your last single or nothing like that.

battling on records, ala LL/Kool Moe Dee -- of course that's written, but a real hip hop battle is supposed to be off the top. i ain't from nowhere near the bay area, so maybe y'all got a different tradition from the rest of hip hop? but most of the shit that passes for battles these days ain't battles.

First off, cats freestyle because ta free the expression, get rid the rigidity of the written-spoke--Not ta restrict & limit themselves. That's just a side-tidbit ta help ya better construct the general concept.

Specifically ta the topic now though--he obviously wasn't "just rapping the lyrics ta his last single," because he was spitting specific personal disses ta Cas & them that he'd written the last couple days fa the occassion ta f*ck them nuckas up... That's not nearly the same thang as bullsh*ttingly spitting bunches a pre-constructed random punchlines that have nuthin ta do with the competitor. THAT'S the sh*t that can't be accepted.
They ain't the same thang, playboy...

As Saafir has put himself many times since then...in a battle I'm coming with everything - writtens, freestyles, personal infomation, etc. - whatever it takes to win. I see no need to limit myself, especially when noone had previously set the standard that the battle would be staged under a 100% freestyle criteria.

And for those who, despite Saafir being comepletely up-front about this both before and after the battle, want to give Cas extra props because he freestyled all of his rhymes...y'all are basically shouting out an inferior product. First off, you make the mistake that you're assuming 100% of what Saafir spit was written and 100% of what Cas spit was freestyled, which wasn't really the case in either instance. Secondly you miss the point once made by GoodLife OG Ngafsh who said "I hope y'all don't just want to hear freestyles, but dope freestyles". And as someone who had previously spent hella time at the GoodLife I can tell you right now that in relation to what many others on the West Coast could do on the freestyle tip, Cas was definitely not bringing dope freestyles. There was no style to his shit at all. The Hiero dudes were even whining about Saafir actually bringing style to his presentation by saying to him that everything you spit has to be exactly on beat. If that was the case then every MC in the world would be kicking the exact same style, only with different voice inflections.

For years friends of mine and I have laughed about the way that Hiero always makes it such a big deal when they are freestyling...yet their freestyles have always been a major step down from their written material. You listen to someone like Aceyalone or Mikah 9 freestyle and there's not that much of a difference from their written shit. And that's exactly what Saafir was able to pull off during the KMEL battle in that noone really knows for sure what parts of his verses were freestyled or written. In some case when he repeats lines to start a verse or to keep himself on pace, it indeed indicates a written segment. But again, much of what he was doing was improvised.

>So much was made of the fact that Saafir wasn't selling,
>when to me he made a better album than any one member of
>Heiro ever did.

This is really pushing it now
Do you really think that Boxcar Sessions is better than every album in the Hiero catalog, or are you just speaking on the solo albums(any one member)
Either way, that is still pushing it

In regards to the battle, I hate to state the obvious as it has been stated plenty of times, but dude came written
To be blunt
He said some ill shit(Saafir) but he fucked up a few times also
As far as I am concerned no one got demolished in that in battle
Saafir had his moments, BUT(and this will always arise in this discussion) he kicked writtens vs off the top
Of course its not a rule that you can't use writtens, but you shouldn't be surprised when cats deduct props from Saafir for that shit
Even Saafir himself seemed like he thought it was wrong
Why did he feel the need to annouce before the battle "i'm coming with written raps"(paraphrased don't know exactly what he said) like he had a guilty conscious or something?

I don't know just my two cents on it
I think the shit was just even with no real winner
Some of Saafir's lines packed a little more punch BUT(you know what is next)

sup core?

yo i think that this battle did a lot for hip hop ESPECIALLY for the bay... being from the westcoast, coming up in the 'early 90's' era we didn't have no legendary shit like 'shan vs. krs' 'juice crew vs. whoever' or no shit like that. we had 'cas vs. saafir' and 'heiro vs hobo' this battle lit fires under fools man for real. it showed us that shit's real out here and if you slip up, you're gonna get called out. i remember 10 heads chillin around the stereo in a little smokey ass room the night of the KMEL battle. ooooh-in and awe-in over shit. tapes we recorded and dubbed all over school the next DAY. kids were gassed up fa sho...

as far as the battle itself... it's like the same argument you have in all the elements of hip hop. flash vs. content. emcees have punchlines vs. content. bboys have foundation vs. blowups. djays have technical vs. basics etc tags vs. pieces... saafir had the ill punchlines... the lines i remember most... but casual was way more on point overall. man i've heard that battle a million times and it's still hard to say definitely who won. i will say without a doubt though that opio came the hardest that night. he dropped one verse and no one wanted to fuck with him after that. mic t got up in there for what reason, i don't know...

talk about two cents..

For those that want to hear the battle, soulseek should have it as hiero vs hobo.

Damn I'm getting misty just thinking about it and when Bobbito played it on the S. Armstrong show. I personally thought the concept was dope, but like Encore said it didn't really showcase both groups talent. And yeah I'm from the school of battles have to be off the top/dome and Saafir didn't do that.

Hobo Junction do have two albums out called the Cleaners and Black Label, which I think are cool...especially since Saafir dumped that offbeat style he had in the beginning. (Oh and Saafir was all over DU's Body Hat Syndrome album)

hahaha I'm waiting for SOHH to read this and put it on their website hahaha

But on the real, Cas...thank you and the Hiero crew for all the dope music.

Question though...who started the fight in the studio hahaha "Hey we got ladies in here..."

I'm remembering the big thing about this battle was how Saafir kept repeating his lines cause he was fucking up spitting the writtens

"I ride til the wheels fall off, uh, I ride til the wheels fall off"

and the other stuff he kept repeating back to back. Saafir was spitting some shit, but, he had time to craft it, so of course some of his lines hit harder. You can tell that Cas is spitting off the dome and he still came ill. & that's why I think Hiero got Hobo.

if you gonna freestyle make sure you can come nicer with whateva that nigga pull out from up his sleeve. period.

if you wack with a freestyle you get no brownie points from me. if you can't out freestyle your opponent's writtens you ain't prepared, you better bring somethin scripted.

a fly freestyle gets more love than a fly written tho, of course.

either way, i don't think hobo won.

Freestyle = Off the dome, period.

No respect for a cat that comes with writtens. A cat that comes with writtens is not an MC.

because I have never witnessed a west coast cypher. All I know is the cats around the way here on the east coast take freestyling very serious. If you are not including shit in your surrondings into your freestyle, your flow may be looked on as a little suspect.

The East Coast attitude seems to be that writtens are okay. If you listen to the Cassidy-Freeway battle, which though not nearly as legendary as the Heiro-Hobo battle, is maybe the closest recent equivelant, it's all writtens.

Shit, if you listen to the "freestyles" on mixtapes, they're clearly not off the top. And that's cool. I don't care either way. But my understanding of the word freestyle has always been that it's not written.

In response to Reply # 213

the most popular today being the off-the-dome rhyme performed live.

in regards to mixtape, freestyle pertains more to the looseness of the content and/or structure of the rhyme, written or not.

the third is the live performance of a written rhyme to whateva beat the dj drops. the flow is what is freestyled.

as an emcee, i can appreciate all three approaches if done well. at the end of the day tho, a dope rhyme is a dope rhyme.

...it's a mixtape haha. In a cypher or on stage, cats will diss you for some writtens. I know when I saw Das EFX kick some writtens I was hella disappointed.

I personally don't think it's east vs west but more old vs new. Cats have more to lose when they come off the dome now than before. Soooo many young cats now don't really understand freestyling as a way of making themselves better emcess instead of "Yo I can go plat with this"

by making the ludicrous claim that noone should ever spit written rhymes in a cipher. An MC should be able to spit both...freestyles and writtens. And both should be respected, as long as they are dope. When you catapult an inferior rhyme over a superior one, just because it was freestyled instead of written you are the one who is fucking up the game. The problem is that not many of you, from what I can tell, have heard MC's proficient enough at it that their freestyles sound as good, or even better than their writtens. The way y'all talk, you seem to want to reward MC's for actually being wack freestylers just because they did it the way you wanted them to. Ultimately this is music that we're talking about...so to me whatever sounds best in the end is what I shout out. Certainly there is a time and place for strictly freestyle exhibitions, and yes, they are very important, but hardly the end-all, be-all of the battle universe.

...I used to maintain Saafir got a little freakier than them. I mean it's not like he wasn't fucking up (something we MCs do often when we freestyle). However, if he did write that shit, it's a little ghey.

Casual got at him for obvioulsy being off the knot with it tho and got more of my respect for it.

Man U were my favorite member of Hiero... (now you and Pep are tied)

But anyway when can we expect the album and who is doing the production... cause honestly I was disappionted with the last album...

it did not sound very cohesive and the town shit/underground thing did not work well...

personally I don't like the direction of Hiero production now it's too Neo Soul sounding..

I would like more of the grit that yall had with your sound to return.. I alway's enjoyed A+ production but I feel it would be nice to hear some Madlib and maybe even Melman, DJ Kahlil, and hell Rick Rock on your next joint.. I mean keep it West Coast and no need to change the lyrics or content I just need better production...

just some Real Talk..

peace...

there is no need for outside producers... maybe 1 or 2 at the most... but Domino, A+ and the other hiero producers can hold it down.. they are great producers.. different producers just take away the Hiero sound...

I got homies from East and West Oakland who clown the hell out of Saafir... just for the simple fact the nigga claim Oakland but is from Fresno... this shit goes way back to 95'..

anyway cats in Oakland from what I seen and heard play Yuckmouth,C Bo, 40 and the like... in other words they ain't bumping Hobo.. and when they were it was the whoridaz ..

as for as hiero they get major love in the bay and respect from the street cats even tho they don't neccessarily bump their shit just cause they from the "Town" and have been reppin for a long time... My best patner is from East Oakland (went to Skyline) and knew Tajai, A+, Keak da Sneak, and a lot of those town cats.. and everybody got dirt so nobody's immune..

As far as the Hill comment ... that nigga lived in the lower bottom but rode with cats from the "Hill" when the "Hill" was wilding out stomping cats and getting in shout outs and shit.. so that shit is dead as well...

bottom line Hobo ain't been poppin in a minute... while Hiero consistently sells 60,000 to 80,000 units independent eating...

hate if ya won't (crabs in a barrell) which seems to be a big problem in the bay...

why can't someone be a fan of both?

i bump the hell outta boxcar sessions, but hiero's unfukwitable in my opinion. that battle divided folks in two. sad thing is...that's probably the deal hobo is most famous for. they got mad talent in their click tho...whoridas, saafir, et al.

who cares if a hobo member got all charles barkley on pep? pep's still the tightest rhyme spitter in this beeyatch (next to forty-figgaro of course).

ya smell me?

>I got homies from East and West Oakland who clown the hell

>Oakland but is from Fresno... this shit goes way back to
>95'..

Your homies are stuck on some stupid shit then. Yeah, maybe Saafir lived in Fresno...when he was like 8 years old. But since then, his (broken) family moved to West Oakland, Saafir spent time homeless living on the streets of the Bay, and then he came up through the ranks of Digital Underground and Plan B/MC Pooh. And at a time when everyone was shouting out East Oakland like it was their damned ghetto pass, Saafir stayed real with his by choosing to constantly rep for his own West Oakland locale. I don't know what more you want out of someone repping where they are from.

Has Saafir since gone Hollywood? Unfortunately, yes. But even Too $hort moved to Atlanta the last time I checked. Anyway, that Fresno argument is hella ignorant, especially coming from a crew that constantly shouts out East Oakland, purposely trying to mislead folks into believing that they're from like Fruitvale instead of up on the hill. Man, that's like being from Clear Lake in Houston and constantly shouting Southside to trick peopkle into believing that you are really from Willowridge. Technically Clear Lake and the hilltop region of Oakland are Southside and East Oaklnad, but c'mon...

>anyway cats in Oakland from what I seen and heard play
>Yuckmouth,C Bo, 40 and the like... in other words they ain't
>bumping Hobo.. and when they were it was the whoridaz ..

So you think those same folks are going to listen to Hiero before the Hobos? If so, you are insane. The Hobos have always covered street territory...while the Hiero's are merely on some...I bet they didn't know I've got a gat resting at home in a shoe box.

But really, this isn't about who is the most gangsta. I know that Hiero has done its fair share of dirt as well...even if you just factor in Jay-Biz by himself. But like someone else said above, there's no way that some Catholic school, my-daddy's-a-lawyer, can-I-buy-some-bomb-from-you, high-pitched-voice skate nerds from the hills are ever gonna serve some real Dogtown gangstas on some I'm-more-Oakland-than-you shit. Real heads knew this from jump, recognize the fire that Saafir was spitting, and that's that.

>as for as hiero they get major love in the bay and respect
>from the street cats even tho they don't neccessarily bump
>their shit just cause they from the "Town" and have been
>reppin for a long time...

There aren't any "street cats" bumping Hiero, you're right about that. It's funny how Hiero almost seems to avoid Berkeley like the plague when it's blatantly obvious that that's exactly where 80% of their Bay Area audience resides.

And I ain't mad at that at all. I've never said that Hiero is any less a Town thing as anyone else. I don't like that they are constantly trying to make it seem that they are harder than they are...but that's why Pep Love gets thrown through a window I suppose.

Whatever though...even I am now starting to get bored with this shit. Somebody does need to press up that entire battle onto cd though for mass consumption. Anybody have Sway and Tech's number?
