had a sound that set the tone for the 80s pop music, prolific to a fault, has songs sitting in the vault that are better than official releases as of late that he refuses to release them b/c he's moved on to a new sound.
whether you think his new sound is better or worse than what he did before is irrelevant because he'll always do things his way and his way only.
impossible to be categorized or pigeon holed. if you don't like the song he just released, he doesn't care because he lives in the moment. still, ppl that don't like what he did with his career still talk about him, because he's a frustrating artist that won't follow anybody's muse but his own.
but i already know what you're going to say. prince hasn't counted in 20 years (neither has MJ)
or how prince's sound wasn't black enough (as if he didn't write all of that stuff for the time? as if black music is the only kind of music that's great? as if "erotic city and adore aren't in his catalogue)
or how michael jackson was better (they clearly viewed one another as peers, and i do to.)
or how prince only had a 6 year golden era (nevermind the fact that he released 2 decades worth of great material in 6 years. stevie took 10 years to relapse MOMY, talking book, innervisions, FFF, SITKOL.
it took MJ 12 years to record OTW, thriller, bad and dangerous.
it took marvin gaye 10 years to record what's going on, lets get it on, i want you, and hear my dear.
meanwhile, in 6 years prince released dirty mind, controversy, double album 1999, purple rain, parade, double album sign of the times, the black album, not to mention incredible b-sides, 3 awesome time album, various dope songs for protégées,1 off pop hits for bands unrelated to prince, and a gang of live shows that really picked up steam after he learned how to work a crowd
that's not even counting unreleased bangers like extralovable, the 15 minute version of computer blue, and empty room.
and for the most part, he wrote, produced, and performed every part of most of what was on his songs.)
but anyway... prince frustrates people for the same reasons that r. kelly does.
