E3 2014: EVOLVE’S KRAKEN IS A FLYING CTHULU WIZARD
267 How Kraken completely changes Turtle Rock's follow-up to Left 4 Dead. Evolve's Kraken vs. IGN 10:43 BY MARTY SLIVAIf
Evolve’s first monster Goliath is Turtle Rock’s take on a brutish, reptilian King Kong, its second monster is a flying Cthulu Wizard.
I’m sure we’re all familiar with some form of the Kraken. Whether it’s through mythology, Clash of the Titans, or Pirates of the Caribbean, the iconic sea beast is one of the most recognizable creatures in pop culture. What I’m here to tell you is that Evolve’s take on the Kraken could very well have what it takes to rival any of its other depictions. Like I said, the best way I can describe this Kraken is as a flying Cthulu wizard.
Unlike Goliath’s heavy, dangerous ground-based attacks, Kraken is all about flying around the map and attacking Hunters from afar. Kraken is able to move around the map much quicker than Goliath thanks its flight, but this comes at the cost of lower overall health. But don’t worry too much about the monster being outnumbered, because its elemental-based attacks were more than enough to make even the most hardened group of Hunters scatter for cover.
Kraken’s major attacks are all electricity-based, but still manage to vary greatly from one-another. There’s the standard electrical blast that acts as a smart way to chip at a Hunter’s health from afar. There’s also a slow but devastating lightning strike that needs to be aimed and primed, but makes quick work of any silly human (or robot) that is unfortunate enough to be in its blast radius. The game’s developers told us that a fully upgraded and perfectly-aimed lightning strike has the ability to incapacitate a Hunter in a single blow.
Apart from those two, there’s a low-damage but high-radius electrical dome attack that can be used to hit all of your Hunters at once and really helps with crown control. Rounding out Kraken’s four special attacks was the ability to release a slew of pulsating balls that seek out Hunters and explode on impact. These balls can be destroyed by gunfire, but releasing a ton of them into a crowded fight forces the other players to constantly question where they should be placing their attention.
Fighting Kraken as one of the Hunter’s forced me to adopt much different strategies than I’d used against Goliath. Tracking it became a much tougher task thanks to the fact that it could cross large chunks of the map without leaving tracks. Once we found it, tethering it with a harpoon became almost necessary due to its ability to jet around through the skies. And trapping it inside of a dome often led to wildly different results. Sometimes a caged Kraken would quickly become bullet-fodder and lead to a swift end of the round. But against a skilled player, a trapped Kraken morphed into a violent hornet who zipped around the enclosed space and picked away at us with quick strikes before any of us could even keep track of its movements.
Evolve - Commentary Trailer 08:50 We’ve swooned over Evolve whenever we’ve had a chance to get our hands on it. When Turtle Rock unveiled their follow-up to Left 4 Dead, we praised its asymmetrical multiplayer and deep, rewarding mechanics. At Judge’s Week, we discovered that each of the different Hunters brought new dynamics into the game, even if they were within the same class. Now, we after getting plenty of hands-on time with Evolve’s second monster, we know that each one dramatically changes how a match feels.
Spending a few hours with Kraken only reaffirmed the fact that Evolve is one of my most anticipated games of 2014. Turtle Rock informed us that the game will ship with 12 Hunters (three different takes on each of the four classes) and over a dozen levels. Most importantly, there will be three different monsters at launch, meaning that we still have one reveal to go before October. I certainly have my wishlist for how the final creature will play (Predator anyone?), but if it’s anywhere near as different as Goliath and Kraken, we’re all in for some good ol’ fashioned hunting.
