In fact, there's a great chance Steph and Kyrie even play each other THIS YEAR for a title. In the finals, a place CP's never been.

And CP is maybe a LITTLE closer to winning a title than Wall, but it's also a decent chance he never wins one or even makes the finals.

As fans we've successfully adjusted our expectations of what we think an elite point guard should be, shifting from "should distribute the ball expertly" to "should somehow make his team substantially better." And I'm not at all opposed to that.

But with these new expectations comes an even greater emphasis being placed on winning. And if winning is the end all be all which, ya know, isn't a bad metric by which to gauge a star player's success, then Chris Paul is still falling short of expectations.

But those pgs I mentioned are all young dudes at the early stages of their careers.

I agree with what folks are saying in the post in regards to him needing more post-season success to get put on a high pedestal. Hopefully his playoff run this year lasts longer than his State Farm commercials. Always annoying seeing Chris Paul in those State Farm commercials and Blake Griffin in those Kia ads after the Clips have been bounced.

The response had a lot of fervor to it. He wasn't totally off base in terms of Chris Paul needing to go deeper in the playoffs though. On an individual level, dude is talented, but he needs more success to get anointed to that next upper echelon level.

It's hard to compare him to Magic and Stockton IMHO, but he was their peer for a bit and on the heels of that Hardaway really took his game to another level. Too bad neither of their knees held up.

Magic balled out that series. Phoenix won because Chambers/West outplayed LA's frontcourt and Hornacek outplayed Byron Scott.

Russy also better.

I enjoy Paul and root for him. He is also a very personable, thoughtful guy. But I gotta wonder where the results are. I also think that for all his domineering of the game (not dominating), shit goes bad for his team on closing possessions *a lot*. You can't say that about Curry.

For a career, though, Paul still wins, and by a good

Unless we get a Nash like run from Curry, which is

Once Curry hoists that MVP Trophy, he will have accomplished more than Paul has in his career to date, although admittedly I do think Paul was deserving of the 08 MVP. He didn't win it though. Wanna trot out playoff series? Very likely to be in Curry's favor by the end of these playoffs, too. More to the point, he's just a better player, RIGHT TODAY and hell yes you'd want the ball in his hands with the game on the line over Paul.

Not to say it's a reflection on him, just an aberration, but I've never seen a guard start the half with no fouls, pick up four, sit, and get his fifth in less than a quarter of tick. Odd. You probably had no idea that even happened. It's cool.

Steph has also had some pretty remarkable games in the playoffs this year, and right now he is chilling waiting for his next opponent while CP3 and them are in a dogfight with Leonard, Duncan and a bunch of bench players.

As for the game today, I'm pleased, I want him and his team to do well. I have worked with the guy and the Clippers going deep is the only chance I have at making some money out of the NBA playoffs. But I'm not going to let my interests and agendas shape reality.

He's not better than Steph right today. And if he's not, he isn't better at all. This was either the best or the second best season of Paul's career. Clearly his best as a Clipper.

... but still... Kyrie and Steph will be better than CP ever was (if they aint now).

Kyrie and Russy are basically 2 guards who happen to be the best ballhandler on the team (sorta like Wade in Miami though obviously different styles), and with Bron in Cleveland now I seriously doubt Kyrie does enough heavy lifting to be in a career convo with CP3.

Steph is probably gonna get his 1st MVP this year which CP3 will probably never get and he's lead an absolutely dominant regular season team (CP3s teams have never been super dominant, just plain real good) and his long range shooting is something few have had in league history, but still he hasn't gotten any further than CP3 in the playoffs and he's only 3 years younger than him. CP3 will always probably be a better defender than him though Steph is improved in that regard and he's far from a bad outside shooter himself, he's actually really good at that it's just that Steph is otherworldly. CP3 was more explosive as a young guy and has already handled a slip in his athleticism gracefully, Steph has never relied on being explosive but I wonder if he'll regress to being a Nash-like liability on D as he gets older and slower.

Either way Steph and CP3 are all-timers and we should appreciate them but CP3 always seems to be taken for granted.

He absolutely cannot take over a game scoring the way Curry can, let alone on a regular basis. Curry has turned into an outstanding playmaker. On that side of the ball, it is an easy decision, which is no knock on Paul. Defensively, Paul is a stronger, savvier player. Very good in the team scheme, but can also create turnovers.

I like both guys though. Russy is sort of an all-in-one machine, like a tank that can turn into a race car. Irving is still evolving in terms of his identity and ability; losing time to injury and shitty teams leaves me with an incomplete impression of him. He could go either way, and that hasn't changed with LeBron's arrival in fact I think it's throw it more up in the air if he will play a more traditional one or stick as more of a ball-dominating two (think Wade, Iverson).

Steph might be the most terrifying shooter I've ever seen and no team in their right mind would let Curry try and beat them, while teams try and make CP3 a scorer to beat them (which he often does). Teams go under on screens to CP3 even though he was pretty much a 40% three point shooter this year. So yeah purely on offense I'd take Curry's defense bending shooting.

But all the other shit CP3 does besides shooting adds up. Dude can still control a game even when his shot is off, which you can't really say about Curry (nevermind Steph's shooting is rarely that far off). He basically never turns the ball over despite a crazy usage rate, which has been a problem for Steph in the past. Steph had his best playmaking year this year... and he still didn't come close to CP3's assist rate. He might be the only point guard in the league that never gets a break on D. He carries the offense AND he's always guarding the opposing team's PG, who usually is the opposing team's best perimeter threat these days, and does it at a high level. There's plenty of possessions Golden State gives Curry a blow on D while they have Thompson or Iggy chase point guards.

I'm hoping the Clips get past the Spurs here and meet GS in the WCF so this gets settled on the court. Their regular season series each had a game where one team was shorthanded (which the less injured team won easily) and the last contest was a great game. The Clips biggest weakness, that horrific bench, gets less emphasis in the playoffs and Griffin is playing at a higher level now than he ever did in the regular season... but Draymond gives him trouble too. CP3 vs Steph in the playoffs last year was a battle already and I wanna see it again.

I know what you mean with Paul and yes in terms of a traditional floor general, he is the best there is. Curry doesn't have to take on that role. He also has great wing defenders (which the Clippers don't). So I mean it's hard to hold that stuff against him exactly. You'd be thrilled to have either player but personally I just think Curry gives you a threat and an explosiveness that Paul doesn't. Only guy I think can compare would be Russy.

These next two or three seasons will cement Curry's legacy, particularly after this season and after the Dub's give him his HUGE contract extension. And a chip (or two) would set things in stone. Paul still has some good years ahead of him, but he's really gotta get cracking after this season.
