looking forward to her Unsung next week and i remember the first time i heard Millie Jackson and i was quickly told Boy, turn that off, it ain't for your young ears to hear.

she was to R&B much like Pam Grier was to the film game back in the 70's nothing else like her then or now for that matter.

she was the real deal and i dug her and Isacc Hayes together. loved her honesty and humor.

She aired you out. She truly was a Black thang. i'll never forget her.

2656099, Just hearing her voice used to annoy the shit outta me
Posted by OldPro, Tue Jan-31-12 02:28 PM
Must have been the late 70s when they used to run one of those Ktel type commercials for her "best of" collection... I could be in the other room and I'd run in and change the channel just so I wouldn't have to hear her husky ass. What's wild is they'd run that thing right in the middle of cartoons and shit lol

I didn't like her for a long time, either... She just seemed so... filthy to me. Not in a cool way, either. More like in a way that made you feel embarrassed, and embarrassed FOR her... and for everybody else listening to it!

But I came to appreciate her in the 90s... Not her 90s material... but I guess by then I had a better (worse?) mindset to start to "get" Caught Up and some of her other albums from the 70s. I phucks with her... up to a point!

No snark, man I had no idea... I'm going to be picking your brain.. haha..

that's one reason I love Warren Coolidge, his first hand accounts are gold. Not to mention his writing style is always on point.

2656178, It Came Across A bit Awkward For Me,,,
Posted by Harlepolis, Tue Jan-31-12 04:28 PM
This is the one moment of Marlena's musical career I didn't care for. Here this woman who has 'Southern Debutante' all over her demeanor come across like she's selling pussy pastries, c'mon. Yeah I know the skit is an act lol but idk, it didn't seem natural to me coming from Miss Shaw.

Other than that, great body of work, one of the BEST live performers ever, outrageous sense of humor, and one of the loyal students of the Dinah Washington school(who I'm a SUCKA for).

"Sweet Beginnings" will always be my FAVE album from her.

and Blowfly... I always wanted to listen to her because I thought she was one of the Jacksons, but she was scary to me too. Not just because of the "adult" nature of her songs but also because she was such a butterface lol
2656145, Who was Blowfly's base? It seems like my parents and their friends

It didn't dawn me that this was the same man who wrote the hits for so many of my fave artists. Its a shame though that most of what folks know from him are his "sexified parodies".

2656193, I Know That, But I Always Hear Folks Being Turned Off By Her Because,,
Posted by Harlepolis, Tue Jan-31-12 05:01 PM
Of her 'semi-prono' lyrics and the way she delivers them, when sex isn't really the WHOLE picture when you listen to her discography(even though its what made her notorious).

Yet, I see this argument in the org too(ironically), like folks are falling over themselves saying that he(Prince) somehow presented the "sex 101 on wax" in a way classier than her. I don't see the distinction.

maybe if they said, "less trashy", then yes...
Prince was a little more restrained to the point he'd catch you by surprise with something like his bit on "Let's Pretend We're Married". Or the whole "Head"/"Sister" 1-2 on Dirty Mind.

lol @ "Sister" to this day... that's probably the first instance of Perfect Troll Prince in recorded form.

Millie on the tiolet taking a dump on the front of the album cover...no, u come on now.....lol. I mean what the F***. who does that kind of stupid s***. Prince has never done anything like that so there is no comparison whatsoever, brother.

she had some phat thighs tho...
in all white.. whew...

Her and Betty Wright - same difference.
2656202, It's VERY ironic that "Grown folks music" back then is complete 180
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Jan-31-12 05:24 PM
opposite of what it is now.

Now, it would be Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, and more of the Soul (we hate Neo Soul, right?) type of artists that cater to the older folks, but the content is very clean...rarely has cussing, isn't too descriptive. And the kids music is what's completely disgusting.
2656208, That IS a weird reversal, isn't it?
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Jan-31-12 05:31 PM
It's kinda like those kids of liberal hippies who grow up to become uptight Republicans because that's the only way to rebel against their free-living parents.
2656218, I love live and uncensored
Posted by revolution75, Tue Jan-31-12 05:39 PM
One of the best live records ever done IMHO
Her studio material was pretty much hit or miss
Much more miss than hit
But her live shows were off the chain
Her xxx shtick didn't bother me that much because I knew women who talked shit like that.
2656219, definitely a one of kind artist....
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Tue Jan-31-12 05:46 PM
really looking forward to her unsung..

she pushed a lot of bounderies that no other female was pushing back then.
2656320, i met her about 10 years ago...
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Tue Jan-31-12 10:29 PM
i wasn't expecting her to be so nice & sweet based off of her persona...lol. shocked the shit out of me. i guess i expected her to yell "BE YOURSELF!!!" at me or something.

(yes...that's a Whodini reference. i'm old. sue me.)

her song "if you aint back in love by monday" is such a funeral song.....it drags and its so sad.....everything about that song sounds like something that would be played at a funeral....I had that song on a super hits on one of those truck stop 8 tracks and I gave it to a thrift store because of that song "if you aint back in love by monday".....having "if you aint back in love by monday" on a that super hits 8 track ruined that entire playlist for me so I had to get rid of it.

The first millie jackson album cover that I ever remember seeing for the first time was one called when the sh** comes out with her on the toilet taking a dump on the front of the album cover....TASTELESS AND GARBAGE....LOL....I see why she never crossed over and was never mainstream....LOL

in most of her songs that ive heard....she always sounded like she had a cold or something......lol
2656575, LOL, it's not called that...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Wed Feb-01-12 12:47 PM
It's called ''Back to the shit". "When the shit comes out" would have been funny though.

I have two of her records, "Caught up" and "Still caught up" and they are great and tasteful 70's soul. While she tackles adult subject matter like sex and infidelity, it's done in a tasteful manner IMO-I have purposedly avoided her tackier/sleazier stuff...
2656593, RE: LOL, it's not called that...

I pray to see footage from her live and uncredited record on this ep

2657095, Millie Jackson was good, she had some Gladys Knight flavor

The albums she made before she started playing up her "nasty" image are solid.

I received some tixs to see millie jackson at the atlanta blues festival this coming saturday but im trying to sell them. I tried listening to her music on youtube and i turned it off especially her feeling bitchy song and she ruined Prince's I wanna be your lover....she sounded like she had a bad COLD. I was laughing my butt off at her version of I wanna be your lover especially with the notes she was trying to reach.
2774801, It hurts so good-what a great album...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Feb-01-13 09:14 PM
That is SOUL music. Seriously, if you view Millie as a philty whore, listen to that record-so dope...

And even ''feelin bitchy''-which has millie more in ''nasty'' mode-is dope as well...

Actually, since this post was made, I have listened to and bought a bunch of millie-albums and while I understand the criticisms, she has made enough dope, non-gimmicky music to get a pass IMO...
2774853, grown folks music indeed...
