"College Football WEEK 6"
Sat Oct-04-25 10:48 AM by guru0509

planets finally aligned bc this is the first saturday where i dont have to do shit, no weddings, no flights, no emails to answer , no trips to home depot / home maintenance / nothing!

finally get to brain rot on football for a solid 6 hours

Wisconsin @ Michigan - two programs headed in two very different directions...Go Badgers but it doesnt look good for Fickell

Cuse @ SMU...Fran Brown is my fav non Buckeye coach...

https://x.com/SamCroston1/status/1967660828272079265

he's hilarious

UVA @ Louisville...upset alert

Kent State @ Oklahoma , therye saying Mateer WILL be back for Texas..tahts freakishly fast healing

Texas @ Florida, first real test for Arch since week 1. Napier and his team on the ropes...if Texas loses twice before the Red River Rivalry, Sark will be feeling it. Gauranteed.

Colorado @ TCU ...this one is going to get ugly,

Vandy @ Bama...Vibes are positive again in Tuscaloosa with a win over Kirby..

Penn State @ UCLA....UCLA might be the worst team in the Big 10. by far. Nico, you dumb guy.

Minnesota @ Ohio State - a shutout would be nice

DA @ FSU....I really wish both teams were undefeated going into this game, but oh well...this has 90s written all over it, a slight drizzle during the game would be the cherry on top

but there were a few that were bad

that being said tho, at one point he was 4/9 for 55 yards with one slipping out of his hand and 2 bad drops that were *not* bad. sometimes its coming in hot.

after that he was 15/19 for 215 and a TD. Texas fans would be doing backflips if Arch Manning ever produced like that, and true freshman JJ was fumbling away the MSU game around this time 2021.

hes fine

out of high school looking amazing as a true freshman starter. It’s clear that he’s got talent, and yes he’s gotta learn on his touch, along with reading through his progressions quicker. Combine that with getting experience any knowing when to scramble and I just junk he’ll do well for us.

He has good straight line speed but doesn't seem to be a freakish athlete with crazy escapability in the pocket

The expectations may be unfair given that he's a true frosh with a mediocre surrounding cast but such is life with that kind of NIL payday.

It begs the question if it's worth it to pay that kind of money for someone who can't produce at an elite level or who really should be sitting an developing for a year or two. Clearly it's what Dante Moore needed.

For a true freshman, starting in an offense that has been VERY conservative since the Rich Rod era, we aren't seeing his full athleticism on display yet. Part of that is the coaching staff wanting him to get experience and develop in his progression reading and pocket passing. And part of it his likely internal to him wanting to prove himself. And while I'd love to see him full off the leash, I get why that experience is important, and with Haynes doing what he does and us winning games I don't have a problem with it.

He's shown a lot of improvement already this season - in this game he hit both McCulley and Marsh in some precision throws that looked really promising as we get to the middle of this season. Mix that in with him getting more confident in when to scramble and getting better touch on those shorter throws (you can't throw fastball bullets as a checkdown to your fullback) and he'll be putting up some NICE stats as a freshman. That said, our overall WR room and our O line play isn't helping the situation at all.

>Clearly it's what Dante Moore needed.

The NIL money really doesn't matter. This isn't a salary cap situation and the university isn't paying it. He's still a true freshman - I don't expect ANY true freshman to start at QB and instantly be elite. I just want him to be getting experience while not losing games for us, and maybe by the end of the year be a big factor in winning some games. Dante Moore is a weird comparison to bring up - Michigan is clearly being more "safe" with Bryce than UCLA was in Moore's freshman year. And even with that - I bet that his experience that year at UCLA helped to contribute to his success now vs. sitting on the bench.

Yeah I'd hope he'd catch it. But growth for Bryce would be realizing that you're throwing to a Senior TE who has single digit catches over his entire career, and that you have enough time to not throw the fastball and to make it more catchable for him.

>that was one of the ones i thought of as an appropriate throw

Appropriate yes. But the best throw? Nah.

thats gotta have sauce on it because Max has contact incoming from his left as soon as it hits him. thats the only throw thats going to make it all the way to his hands. its about the 13 min mark of the 2nd quarter

also, he was lined up as an actual TE on the LOS and ran a real route, not a chip + leak sort of thing out of the backfield. the guy doing that has to catch a fastball sometimes, because that soft spot goes away quick once the TE stops moving and flashes his hands, which is exactly where the ball came in.

hes had one or more every game that were clearly too much, but hes also had at least one every game where I thought the pass only works with zip and his intended target let him down.

I saw that contact coming so that looked to be intentional.

Also on my rewatch I saw several plays where he was clearly going through full progressions, including seeing some adjustments off reading the secondary. He's showing a lot of promise.

Sounds like Marsh has been elevated to WR2 behind McCulley, and also that Hogan Hansen might be back for this Saturday. I think this will be a nice test for what this team is - going to USC as a slight underdog. I really need to see some improvement from the O line though.

Michigan has won 4 games on the West Coast in my lifetime, and Bama barely counts imo

and the way the losses went...sheesh.

both Lloyd Rose Bowls against USC
2003 @ Oregon
2001 @ UW
2000 @ UCLA

just really heartwrenching shit

OL should get Gio back which will help, and i dont see a lot of resistance on the ground, but the pass rush is real good and I like Dan Lynn as a coordinator. if they can pitch a tent in "2nd and 5" land that will go a long way

Nessler's issue is that he's paired with Danielson who is a total fucking bozo.

My opinion has nothing to do with play calling or coaches reining him in. From an athletic standpoint, he's not a terrelle pryor type who steps on the field as freshman and you're like holy shit this dude is just different.

That's fine if passing is more of his calling card. But he needs a lot of development on that front as right now he only seems to have a fastball in his arsenal.

Again, not saying he's bad and I'm sure he'll win lots of games and put up some big numbers but it's just not what I was expecting given the hype.

Sure, it doesn't matter to you or I. But someone is paying it and there are expectations that come along with that. You can't give 12 mil to a player to ride the pine for 2 years and develop. And a recruit of that caliber is going to want to go somewhere and start year 1. I don't know how healthy it is from a program standpoint if you have to throw away a year (or more) to sign a 5 star qb.

Or not being able to sit a star player because he's being paid too much money to sit (Manning)

>Dante Moore

Why is it a weird comparison? Moore is a player who was pressed into starting too soon and so is bryce.

That's awfully speculative. Tough to say that stinking up the field at ucla as a true frosh was beneficial to him. He's fortunate to have landed in a really good situation at oregon where he was able to sit a year and learn behind a veteran. He could've just as easily landed at auburn or some shit and never been heard from again.

>Moore is a player who was
>pressed into starting too soon and so is bryce.

He's thrown 1 interception the entire year. He's getting valuable experience starting and winning in games. Being able to get live experience reading defenses and leading the team is something that can be a big payoff for his career.

When I think of cases of freshmen QBs "starting too soon" there are a few specific categories -

Starting too soon for a team that is trash. This would be because he'd lose a ton of games, get criticism for it, and that impact his confidence. That hasn't been the case for us this year. We're 4-1. Having a terrible O line would go into this category as well because he could get hurt. This might be the ONE area I'm worried about, because our line needs to be better. But they aren't terrible or to the point that it's a negative having him start.

The opposite - starting too soon for a team that is great. If a team is great and every other position group is ready to compete for a national championship, then it could be too much pressure starting a freshman QB. Expectations too high, exposing him to blame if anything goes wrong. Not the case with us. Again, looking at this and my above paragraph, we are in a sweet spot where we have a decent but not great team. We came into the preseason ranked but not in the top 10 or predicted to compete for a chip. That's right where we are now after 5 games.

Last reason I'd give for not starting a freshman "too soon" would be if he isn't mentally ready for it. And honestly the most impressive thing I've seen so far this year with Bryce is his poise along with his comfort in being a leader on the team.

or because you have to shield the qb from doing stupid shit or the fallout from doing stupid shit

then the qb is starting too soon

its clear underwood wasn't ready for OU and i guess it doesnt matter as much now...but in the previous format an early season loss could've knocked you out of playoff contention. so you didn't the luxury of letting a player mature as the season went on.

In response to Reply # 36

the team hasnt suffered any ill consequences, and hes visibly improving every week.

we can say moore started too soon because in week 4 he started swirling the drain, even with a bye in week 5. Underwood just came out of a week 5 bye and had his best game against a top ~30 SP+ defense, with a rating higher than anything Moore achieved in any Pac 12 game .

hes already so far beyond where Dante Moore was that they really arent comparable. in the 163 attempts before he got benched, Moore threw 7 picks, 6 in his first 3 conference games and his play was cratering week to week. he was also constantly getting himself in trouble with sacks.

underwood has thrown one pick in 130 attempts, in a 60 point win, and is playing his best ball. hes a competent Big 10 QB right now, and for his youth to cost Michigan something, that could only happen because HIS play put them in that position in the first place.

if he starts regressing then maybe it will be time to revisit this, but 2023 Dante Moore is clearly in Bryce'a rearview mirror.

underwood went 9-24 for 142 yards in a loss to the one legit team they've played all year. I would call that a consequence.

the OU game was firmly within acceptable parameters. they dont have a better option, or even just a more experienced option with Davis Warren still on the shelf, so as long as the growth opportunity is availed im good

bryce is at the start of his, outproducing a lot of older guys, with fewer developed weapons around him.

his assignment is to not make losing plays. if the worst thing to say about him right now is that hes throwing accurate passes too hard, ill take it, enthusiastically.

He seems like a good, genuine guy with a nice family. I hate that the criticism of him is always accompanied with some good ol CISM from the PSU maga crowd, but I just can’t defend him as a coach. He sucks. He can recruit well and build you a 10 win team, but he ain’t winning you any meaningful games and he’s sure as shit not maximizing his talent.

Losing to Oregon was predictable and son brand. Losing to UCLA is on another level. Not sure how he can possibly recover from this. This could easily snowball into an abysmal .500 season.

the best defense by far, with the best defensive coordiantor in the country....best linebackers and the best secondary

allowing 5 ppg is absurd

14 players lost to the NFl

both coordinators gone

very annoyed that we dont get to see Oregon in the regular season, we need our retribution

Carnell Tate is going to be the next TOSU WR legend to be drafted first round ...that will be 6 years in a row now

This is a huge weekend in the big ten

USC vs Michigan , this game is so intriguing for so many reasons

Oregon vs Indiana

TOSU vs Illinois

UCLA vs Michigan State

if you've auto faded sc against physical run based teams since the pete carrol era you are a very rich man (like me!)

but if you've auto faded big 10 teams traveling cross country you'd also be very rich.

sc is a horrendous road team. not like the coliseum is an intimidating place but sc plays much much better at home.

sc has michigan and then at ND in back to back weeks. if riley loses both games i think he's done. he needs this game desperately. mich isn't a 'desperate' program like sc but if they want to make the playoffs this seems like a must win.

like Lions + Jahmyr Gibbs TD is just SOP at this point, same for USCs opponents
