"NBA Playoffs: Round 1"

Figure we’d see how this goes. Thought about a separate joint for Eastern/Western Conferences, but…eh. Let’s try this.

Matchups are set after Davion Mitchell turns into Game 6 Klay and AD goes out on his shield in Memphis.

Eastern:
Heat/Cavs
Bucks/Pacers
Pistons/Knicks
Magic/Celtics

Western:
Grizzlies/Thunder
Clippers/Nuggets
Wolves/Lakers
Dubs/Rockets

and ive hated them ever since

ive been a Pacers fan, a Magic fan, a Rockets fan, and a Heat fan at various points of my young life and then they did me a solid with 20 straight years of garbage.

pragmatically, id have preferred to play the Dame-less Bucks, but emotionally this carries a significant potential payoff for me.

the Pistons ownership placed on the Detroit playoff tickets, it'll be interesting to see how hostile the Detroit fanbase will be for games 3 and 4.

no Suggs to create for others and harass D White, and no Mo giving them 20 PER over 20 mins off the bench

yesterday was the perfect illustration of their current state. Banchero and Franz give them ~60/15/10 while Franz chases around all stars on the other end, and nobody else is even in double figures

what a floppy bitch

Hardaway and Beasley aint goin 1-14 at home, and that's the only reason the Knicks came back in either game.

Duren + Cade
45 points on 25 shots, 25 REB, 6 BLK+STL

Brunson + Towns
47 points on 38 shots, *9 REB*, 3 B+S

im feeling real good about this

but undersized Brunson is a flopper...

schroeder did a god damn somersault flopping lol

funny how Assar and Measly Beasly cried about game one(where detroit went to the line more as well) and then game 2 the refs decide to let detroit "play".

I don't think this is the reason they lost btw. they lost because we finally got multiple respected players in the league and they're playing like they've never been in the NBA. this is on Thibs not having any offensive schemes and leaning on Brunson to save the day.

if you start typing his name into google, "jalen brunson flopping" is a predictive result

Schroder absolutely sold one, no argument there. Brunson tho was on a different level. The arm hooks were non stop, getting into a defenders chest and falling down 35 feet from the rim...just shithousery.

Also, the Knicks spent the whole first half taking jumpshots. The Pistons were called for more fouls overall, and as soon as the Knicks actually started going to the rim Hart + Brunson went to the line.

I agree about the disappearing acts. Bridges in particular gets paid way too much to just stand around waiting for open 3s. Towns seems to he having trouble getting comfortable because we're throwing different defenders at him. When he catches the ball 20+ feet from the rim he doesn't seem interested in trying to dribble at Hardaway or Harris, and if he starts backing down from out there its so slow developing that the double can just stand there and wait for him.

They have significant adjustments to make, both in how to how to deal with the Pistons defensive length, and locating Piston shooters. Hardaway in particular was basically doing shootaround drills, and while you can bait him into taking bad ones, you cant give him an endless parade of good ones.

its been 17 years since we had a playoff win....last night was therapeutic,

the hush that fell over MSG when Schroder hit that 3 was a beautiful sight to behold..and all the shit talk from Knicks fans on the train from the Garden back to Brooklyn was giving me life ...

KAT is softer that a basket of kittens. Scoreless 2nd half and we're not even at full strength with our best defensive big man injured

If Jaden Ivey was healthy, forget about it .

If you thought MSG was loud, wait til you hear the crowd in Detroit. They are STARVING for good basketball. The last playoff win was 2008 and this has been a long time coming now.

We should be up 2-0 but oh well

and Jalen Brunson's game is nasty / grotesque....flailing, flopping, dirty elbows, grabbing, pulling ...jesus christ what a disgusting slob of a player....always falling on the ground with them dirty ass white girl braids flying everywhere

he had all of social media cheering for Dennis Schroeder last night with that disgusting foul baiting and then celebrating that shit,

It was only fitting that the game winning 3 was right in his fucking face.

edit, remember when the Knicks gave up five first-round draft picks, a first-round pick swap, and a second-round pick in return for ONE Mikal Bridges....

lol

In response to Reply # 29

It’s a tough pill to swallow, cause Giannis is Giannis, and in an ideal world he’s the type of player who sticks with one team his whole career. But it doesn’t seem salvageable at this point and if he doesn’t demand a trade this offseason he likely will next offseason. Actually I expect a Dame-like “I don’t want to request a trade, but if YOU think it’s in YOUR best interests, I’m all ears.” type request, which is a weird place to be in. Let’s just rip the bandaid off.

If they play it right, they could get a haul like OKC and Houston did and bounce back in a few years. If they play it wrong, they’ll get a Luka haul.

bc Giannis might not be the caliber of player where his team should have a base minimum conference finals expectation, but the perception is that he definitely is, so its gotta be someone else's fault if it doesnt happen.

theyve gone every route. the stickler, the tactician, the players' coach.

if a team wants to package a whole ass future for him, i would probably take them up on that

In response to Reply # 32

They're capped out for a while, and they're draft pick future doesn't look great. And their "support" players aren't exactly tradeable assets on their own. So you're counting on established vets to come and take a salary cut to play on a team with Giannis and Dame that will likely wash out in the first round.

IF you can find a team that believes it's on the cusp of making the finals that's will to mortgage their future for Giannis, you pretty much should make that deal, and then trade whatever else you can.

Going to be interesting off-season, as there are a couple of other teams with "superstars" that well could go into Fire Sale mode.

Yeah. Something's gotta change there. Dame and Giannis just aren't it. If they can move him for a haul - they've just gotta do it.

That being said, the team that can probably offer the most is OKC and that's terrifying.

they'd be paying for four coaches as they are currently paying for Doc, Budenholzer, and Adrian Griffin.

Wild to me that Budenholzer is currently being paid by two front offices right now and he's completely jobless.

thats why hes a coach killer. not because he sucks, but because the expectations are in the thermosphere and if you arent knocking on the door of the Finals, its your fault.

In response to Reply # 0

I like Donovan as a player, but I've generally felt that he's great if he's your team's second or third-best player. However, he doesn't seem like a #1 on a Finals team.

He seemed like a Top 15 player, but much closer to 15 than to 5.

But tonight's 4th quarter has me rethinking things. I think he was 6/7 in the 4th quarter for 17 points in a game that the Heat played well enough to win, if not for Mitchell's heroics.

Dr. Claw I know has an expert take on this, but Mitchell was very impressive and, at least this season, seems much closer to 5 than 15 in the Top 15 rankings.

The fans heckling Brunson reminded me of the new blood Knicks fans that heckled Trey Young years ago.

I suppose it's cool to see some deep seeded physical play between the two teams.

I have to assume you're upset that Isiah Stewart can't be a part of this on the court since being a physically imposing figure is pretty much is bread and butter.

Since I am a Knicks fan, I am hoping the Knicks will clean up all the offensive rebounds they gave up in the fourth quarter last night. That and the Knicks slowing down the offensive sets towards the of the game yesterday were stressing me out.

Goofball franchise with zero leadership or direction, and an easy playoff out for any team with some heart and talent.

Ja is a clown. Do some cool tik tok shit here and there and then bow out by mid April every year - until the athleticism goes at about 28, and out the league by 31.

the Bucks are 1-8 in the last 9 playoff games that Giannis has played in. In those games, he averaged 30/15/6 on 52.5 percent shooting. He gone, man. Pat Riley has missed on most of the whales he’s gone after…he’s gotta be thinking this is maybe his last swing.

Get that AAU bullshit out of here. That could’ve easily set off a much uglier scene. If players get suspended for entire seasons for going into the stands, fans should get at least the same for going on the court and trying to instigate shit.

Old man Halliburton should watch from the couch from now on.

You're giving the father more grace than his own son.

In addition, the father apologized to Giannis on social media after the incident as well.

He knew enough to do better afterwards, but didn't in the moment.

Dude is lucky he didn't get knocked the fuck out.

LeBron loudly (and correctly) checked his mom for doing something half as stupid damn near 20 years ago.

So, yes, I wouldn't blame the Pacers if they banned him from their arena. Or if other teams followed suit.

Regarding that LeBron reference; you're referring to LeBron's mother barking at one of the Celtics in Cleveland, correct? I could have sworn that happened when LeBron and the Celtic player crashed out of bounds into the front row and that's where LeBron's mother tried to get loud.

I don't remember seeing or hearing about her going onto the court like Haliburton's loud mouth father did.

In response to Reply # 85

If such a player were so good and welcome and wanted, his team and fans of his team wouldn’t be so pissed off that they couldn’t get rid of him.

Yet they are, and his team will try again this summer.

If only they had a legit grievance, they’d have filed for it.

The fact that they’d rather risk this result than pay a premium for the long term disaster the team physical foretold, speaks volumes.

So I get the fixation and big mad energy over it. I’d say it will be ok, but we both know that team is dog shit and always will be. They could win a chip next year and still be less relevant than the Lakers are when they make the lottery.

You can’t seem to wrap your head around the fact that the only reason the hornets were willing to trade mark is because he’s not the type of C they want for their future system. He was drafted by a previous GM and coach. Nothing wrong with the physical at all. That’s been proven at this point. The league knows it. Numerous commentators clued in to the lakers dirty work here.

Mark was hand picked by Luka so the hornets made the lakers pay a premium, then they got cold feet at the price tag when they sobered up.
Mark was fantastic post-TD, btw. And the lakers just got trashed by a team with big presence in the middle. They played themselves.

> long term disaster the team physical foretold
you think theyve got a crystal ball back there? you knowledge of what physicals can and cant determine was just exposed by this laughable comment. YOu;re a very good lakers mouthpiece tho, their PR dept would be proud.

You can't seem to wrap your head around the fact that the Lakers didn't like what they saw in the physical.

>That’s been proven at this point.

You have an extremely loose definition of “proven”.

You had a whole ass tantrum when asked about evidence, so letMs not act like you care about what is or isn’t “proven. You immediately assumed there was no problem and glommed onto anything that agreed with your take.

That’s not “proven”, that’s “confirmation bias”.

>The league knows it.

No, they don’t “know” anything. That’s just an empty assertion.

>Numerous commentators clued in to the lakers
>dirty work here.

Yes, numerous people speculated, and nameless doctors believed he was fine.

None of that is proof or evidence of anything.

Funny how I already addressed this dumb take in the op.

>> long term disaster the team physical foretold
>you think theyve got a crystal ball back there? you knowledge
>of what physicals can and cant determine was just exposed by
>this laughable comment.

No, I don’t think they had a crystal ball. It’s not about certainty, it’s about liklihoods and potential issues, and whether what they’ve seen in that physical made them comfortable gambling on that player.

It’s really not that hard to grasp if you’re not big mad that your team couldn’t get rid of him.

JJ isn't a coach so much as an arrogant, defensive podcaster who befriended Lebron. Dude's lack of adjustments alone shows he's not ready, but his arrogance seals the deal. I give him 2 more years until he's back behind the podcast mic.

Luka is out of shape and a giant liability on defense. He's more worried about crying to the refs than even finishing the play. Insane that this "generational talent" is only effective with very specific personnel around him. Like JJ, he's a whole ass bitch and LA is going to regret making him the future. Not saying AD was it either by any means, but from a basketball standpoint Luka isn't it. They'll sell a lot of jerseys to flabby and sick white dudes though.

Everyone needs to dead that GOAT shit once and for all. Bron has under-achieved too many times, had too much all-NBA help for this to keep being a thing. And if dudes are going to use his PED-fueled longevity for his GOAT status, then yes there are expectations still. It can't be "look what he's doing at 40!" one day then "what do you want, he's 40??" the next.

Its sort of surreal to see the Laker franchise struggle like this with no real light at the end of the tunnel. Don't hand the keys of your franchise over to Clutch sports.

Maybe Savannah can suit up next year to give the fanbase something else "historic"?

Those minutes lost the Lakers that game. He was like a -13 in 8 minutes, lol. Lakers scored like one basket in 5 minutes start of the third. When he’s in there, it just makes Gobert’s life insanely easy on defense. And Game 4, not playing him damn near worked on the road. So I understand the impulse, even if Gobert went god mode on offense Game 5.

The problem is, of course, that the roster was built around AD. Then they traded their best defender for an offensive weapon and were unable to bring in a competent center after AD was gone. So this playoffs was always going to be a major uphill climb imo.

by previous teams even while Gobert won his multiple DPOY awards.

Why didn't the Lakers switch to get Gobert on the wing in iso-matchups defensively to get him in foul trouble and get him off the court? I get that's a bit harder to do after Luka had his back issues to start the second half, but I didn't see the Lakers try to run smallball to get Gobert off the court when he was so obviously killing them in the paint with his offensive rebounds and lob touches.

If the Pacers were my team I would say this feels too heavy handed, especially if he doesn't have any previous issues with the team.

he also has to recognize how incredibly stupid that was for his father to do. this could've been a disaster for the league.

he's lucky Giannis is who he is. some other players may not have handle it with that level of calm.

it doesn't feel heavy handed to me at all. this ban will probably just for the rest of the playoffs. pops will be back next year. that's my guess.

At no point did he realize how ridiculous he was being. So it's likely he's been an irritant to the organization prior to this.

That’s the sort of entitlement and arrogance you need to check hard and fast, because that message needs to be sent far and wide.

Dude pulled obnoxious little league dad shit in an NBA playoff game.

Being the father of their star is why he did what he did IMO, and that’s the sort of thing that needs to be shut all the way down immediately IMO.

Half measures leave the door open for other shenanigans.

So they took a full measure and it was the right call.

Did the refs not let Brunson cos play as foulbaitHarden every game?

Did you miss the nicks celebrating game 1 at home like they just won the National Championship?

A young teams first experience in the playoffs resulted in intensity and increased fanfare....CRAZY.

They wont have to take their pants off for too much longer, so all good.

We have former Knicks like John Starks. He wouldn't get the love if Phife and others didn't mention him in raps. Now he wants to act a fool forever. Look at Spike. Look at Tracey. A lot of annoying distractions to pick from. Now we're throwing up hand gestures after getting out of the 1st round.

I hate the fact the Bulls still won that series (and maybe that game; can't remember) AND the fact he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in Game 7 vs. Houston, but I will never, ever not love John Starks. Him, Ewing and Oak were prime '90s Knick gang

Starks was a big part of the reason the Knicks didn't get a ring in 1994 game of how badly he performed in Game 7 of the Finals.

Years later, I place a majority of the blame on Riley for not yanking Starks sooner, but I still hold some level of animus towards him.

Green would be a great 6th man off the bench scorer on a contender. he can't carry a team.

We gutted out a tough series with physical defense, and managed to demonstrate our own toughness as well. Very happy that Hield beasted. And beating Houston pretty much always puts a smile on my face. One constant over the last decade is that Houston trots out a very unlikable squad.

Oh, and Dillon Brooks continues to be a giant fucking herb.
