"College World Series 2024"

WCWS starts today:

(1) Texas vs (8) Stanford
(2) Oklahoma vs (10) Duke
(4) Florida vs (5) Oklahoma State
(6) UCLA vs (14) Alabama

teams are not reseeded after super regionals so these are their original national seed matchups. (3) Tennessee was knocked out at home by Alabama thanks to some lifeless hitting, which was sad because they had an elite pitcher this year and won back-to-back SEC titles.

even though Texas won the Big 12 I would say OU is the favorite until proven otherwise. Texas was in a nail-biter with A&M to survive supers so they might not be used to being hunted.

Tennessee is the number one overall seed, which once again shows why Tony Vitello is one of the best coaches in America and probably the best recruiter.

considering they lost their top two pitchers, one being the 9th overall pick (Chase Dollander) and the other transferred to CWS runner-up Wake Forest (Chase Burns) after Vitello would not guarantee he started (Burns will be a top 15 pick in this year's MLB draft), to have this team win a deep SEC is quite amazing.

(1) Tennessee
(2) Kentucky
(3) Texas A&M
(4) UNC
(5) Arkansas
(6) Clemson
(7) Georgia
(8) Florida State
(9) Oklahoma
(10) NC State
(11) Oklahoma State
(12) Virginia
(13) Arizona
(14) UC Santa Barbara
(15) Oregon State
(16) ECU

the top 16 seeds host four-team double-elimination tournaments and the 16 winners play each other in super regionals. Tennessee has the best offense in the country but their pitching isn't as talented as 2022 or 2023, and you need A LOT of arms in the NCAA postseason. we'll see!

credit to Chase Burns for helping Tennessee advance to the CWS last season but I'm glad the Vols don't have the possibility of seeing him again now that Wake Forest is knocked out

your ace Hagen Smith, who was the best pitcher in the nation this season (1.48 ERA) and hadn't given up three runs in a game all year, gets blown up for a six-spot in a loss to Kansas State

Arkansas baseball choking in the postseason is a classic tale

4th overall seed but LSU being shit for half the season then getting hot at the end is a underseeding nightmare -- similar to Clemson being the 3rd overall seed last year but getting a super talented Tennessee team in their regional

big win for UNC though; it'll be tough for LSU to win three games in a row

not quite there yet but beating Indiana today put them in the right spot. teams that go 2-0 to start a regional have like 90% odds to advance.

getting knocked into a loser's bracket and having to win three games over two days is about as brutal as it gets, considering how many arms you need to make that happen. softball it's doable because pitchers can go back-to-back, but baseball is damn near mission impossible.

elite offense. top of the lineup barely does anything but your 5-9 hitters plate 10 RBIs.

mixed feeling if ECU wins tomorrow but at least one of them would be CWS bound.

both Stanford and Florida would have to win twice to advance to the final

Stanford is absolutely riding Nijaree Canady, she's pitching literally every inning and carrying them

Up 5-3 at UGA, give up 1 in the 8th, then one in the 9th

strand loaded bases in the 9th, helped by a terrible baserunning error and a 3-1 groundout on a ball

give up 3 in the 10th

get one back in the tenth, another baserunning error loading the bases instead of scoring a run, then 2 meek outs to end the game

wonder if that would have gone differently if they hadnt had to play UNCW again at noon

comebacks in sports. Texas loses to A&M in the 11th inning, with the game ending at midnight, then they have to turn around and play for their lives at noon the next day? then again after that? no wonder they lost to Louisiana.

>wonder if that would have gone differently if they hadnt had
>to play UNCW again at noon

the amount of pitching you need to not only win those two games THEN win again today is kind of unfathomable to me

the game was over

one of the worst plays I've ever seen in many years watching the WCWS -- how do you make yourself the third out of the inning, with the tying run at third base, because you are dicking around trying to round first with the second baseman holding the ball three feet away from you?

The second baseman was standing right on the bag so there was really nowhere to go. She wasn't a threat to run. So why was she dancing so far off 1st base?

I know Texas was up like 1-0 early in this game. But at no time in this series did they ever look like they were on the same level as Oklahoma.

SEC is a deeper league, although all the SEC teams will have to play OU too

Sooners lose a key group of seniors who were starters or contributors to all four titles...but then again, they had freshmen come up big last night and Gasso will probably add a top 5 team just in portal players

is the other "power" in softball and baseball and is being split up

SEC (9) and Pac-12 have (3) won 12 of the last 14 CWS titles, and now counting Oklahoma, an SEC member has won 10 of the last 12 WCWS titles (Florida 2, Alabama 1)

Tennessee doesn't have a true ace (A.J. Russell was supposed to be that guy but he was held out nearly all year with elbow soreness; it seems inevitable he will get TJ sooner than later)

Drew Beam is solid, but he gets in trouble on the third time through when he can't locate his curve and has to throw his fastball for strikes -- it's a very hittable heater with little movement

the bullpen though

Tennessee might as well put a tee up there during the fifth through seventh innings

offense could have hit a little better with RISP but you should win at home with 8 runs

game three, Evansville emptied their clip pitching-wise but Vols need to score a bunch tomorrow and not let it come down to a high-leverage pitching situation late

game had it all:

- over-the-shoulder-game-saving catch of the year by Clemson CF Cam Cannarella a la Willie Mays
- umpires making the game about themselves
- game-tying three-run shot in the ninth inning by Clemson
- stupid celebration ejections (thank the butthurt opponents of 2022 Tennessee for that, the other teams got so pissy about that team that they fucked the celebrations with dumb rules)
- Florida walking it off in the 13th inning

Florida barely got into the tournament and now they are back in the CWS

meanwhile Clemson hasn't been to the CWS in 14 years; two straight extra-inning heartbreakers (14-inning loss against Tennessee last year) after being a top 4 national seed both times

Ducks up 7-4 on A&M in the 7th inning and they walked in FIVE STRAIGHT runs, then gave up a grand slam to stop the bleeding

not sure about Oregon's bullpen situation but for the coaching staff to just let their pitcher die out there was sad -- after four walks and a HPB in the inning, you got to get him out of there

(3) Texas A&M vs Florida - 6 pm CST / ESPN

a lot of bridesmaids in this CWS -- Florida State has been 24 times and never won the title, while UNC and A&M have a lot of baseball history but also never won the CWS.

the top national seed (Tennessee) has not won the CWS in 25 years (Miami-FL, 1999).

Tennessee walk-off win against FSU, 12-11

really a frustrating game for most of the way, lots of walks and errors (FSU probably had an extra two innings from extra outs) helped FSU build leads of 9-4 and 11-7

that COMEBACK though (props to C-Mo for the cycle)

Tennessee had four-straight two-out hits to score 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th

VOLS BITCH

I kind of like how college baseball can still have dominant '90s style pitchers who top out at 91 and win with offspeed location

MLB has seemingly an endless parade of 100 fastball/89 slider guys out of the pen

systematic beating of UNC tonight -- Beam was dialed in and this lineup is too good to keep down; Tennessee's 6-7-8 are most teams' 3-4-5

UNC and Florida State will fight it out Tuesday for the chance to rematch, Tennessee just has to beat the winner one more time to advance to the finals

if NC State knocks out Florida tomorrow we're going to have a first-time CWS champion

not that Canady needs it, but it certainly doesn't hurt that OU has Jennifer Rocha. Rocha was at Florida when they won two titles and had all those elite arms (Stacey Nelson, Brombacher, a few more I'm forgetting). not a coincidence OU hasn't fell off any since she came back.

plus Rocha is a former OU player so you know she's not going anywhere unless she wants to be a HC.

is one of them will be eliminated

Florida State vs. UNC in the other elimination game, to my knowledge they actually didn't have a series this past ACC season -- I think I'd rather face UNC in a rematch because their bats are a bit cold right now and FSU is just scorching the ball

Tennessee will play the UNC/FSU winner tomorrow; Tennessee is undefeated so UNC/FSU will have to beat them twice

Texas A&M (amazing story considering their injuries) will play the Florida/UK winner tomorrow, same deal with the Aggies only needing to win one game

boys are probably more fired up to face FSU as a challenge. FSU is raking but Tennessee also played their worst half-inning of the season in the top of the 3rd.

FSU saved their pitching, only had to use four guys through the loser's bracket -- guess they will start Arnold again? Sechrist has been on a roll so I think you ride him tomorrow then its all hands on deck (minus Beam) for Friday if needed.

Tennessee vs. Texas A&M -- 7:30 pm EST
Sunday, Game 2 -- 2 pm EST
Monday, Game (if necessary) -- 7 pm EST

neither team has won a national championship in baseball

Tennessee has the best offense in the country, is the first team ever to have five players hit 20 homers or more in a season, and is averaging 9.8 runs per game in the NCAA tournament

despite losing their number two starter, Texas A&M is allowing 3 runs per game in the NCAA tournament and just 1 run per game in the CWS

Tennessee beat A&M in the SEC tournament last month but that isn't a super relevant result as the pitching is a lot different (starters go very limited innings and teams use lots of arms as to save their main guys for the NCAA tournament right after)

LETS FUCKING GO

repeat of the first FSU game for Tennessee, except A&M has an actual elite bullpen and wasn't going to give up a 6 run cushion

lots of errors, general sloppiness and bad approaches on the mound (grooving 0-2 fastballs) and at the plate (C-Mo and Tears went up there hacking every single at-bat, C-Mo whiffed on first-pitch off-speed *FIVE* straight at-bats)

A&M had a great pitching plan and hit with RISP, Tennessee will need a big effort from Beam tomorrow and a whole lot better everything

Vols were dreadful with RISP but big start by Drew Beam and even bigger relief outing by Aaron Combs -- two of the most consistent pitchers the last two years so glad they held off A&M until the offense banged out a pair of homers

both starters tomorrow have been really good this postseason (Lamkin for A&M and Sechrist for Tennessee), A&M still has Aschenbeck and Tennessee has practically all their bullpen arms except for Combs

THE 2024 COLLEGE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS

- #1 national seed (first team in 25 years to win the title as the top seed)
- Most HR by any team in 27 years and 2nd-most all-time
- First SEC team to win 60 games in a season
- SEC champs
- SEC tournament champs
- National champs (first baseball title in school history)

the best and most hated program in college baseball over the last four years. the ridiculously talented 2022 team that lost at home in Supers is exorcised. Tony Vitello is the SEC's daddy. what a legendary team and run.

Extremely fun team to root for. So many clutch plays throughout the CWS.

Gonna be a lot of turnover next year of the starting line-up, but feels like the program is at a 'Reload' phase now. Signing TV to a FAT extension and getting the stadium renovations completed will only help.

Was hoping to see Helton there - assumed he would've showed up with Peyton.

sports aren't sweet without the threat of pain

in retrospect, having Kirby and Combs get strikeouts for the last five outs was the only way to win a national title -- absolutely fitting.

plus A&M is damn good. clearly the second-best team in the country and played Tennessee almost even over three games.

you're right that Vitello will always reload. he's too good a recruiter not to; I thought it would be a long time (if ever) that we saw another Tennessee team as stacked as 2022, but two years later and this group was better. that's with the Vols losing their top four pitchers from 2023 -- two of those guys being top ten draft picks and another being a potential first-rounder. maybe one of those addition by subtraction -- I felt like Vitello was calling out Chase Burns repeatedly this season with a lot of his team chemistry comments.

the monster is built. Vitello is hated because these other SEC schools (Vandy fans have got to be literally crying right now, Corbin ain't built for the NIL/portal life) know this train ain't stopping.

In response to Reply # 0

what a cotdamn roundhouse into the scrotum. Schloss was at TCU forever, built up that program, A&M stole him away two years ago, and now after living up to his promise he stabs them in the back.

bad enough taking a job hours after the final ends but to Texas of all places? that is the most big brother shit of all-time.

from the postgame presser last night:

Q: What do you have to say about your future in Aggieland?

SCHLOSSNAGLE: "I think it's pretty selfish of you you to ask me that question, to be honest with you. But I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again. And that hasn't changed in my mind.

That's unfair to talk about something like that. That would be like you asking Montgomery if he's going to sign in the draft. I understand you've got to ask the question. But I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job. And I poured every ounce of my soul in this job and I gave this job every ounce I could possibly give it. Write that."

*notices use of past tense when reading it now*
