6. "When the Tim Donaghy scandal happened..."
In response to Reply # 3

...the biggest thing that gave me pause about the entire situation was
finding out that NBA refs get notes from the league office after every playoff game.

So let's say there weren't a lot of fouls called in games 1 and 2, Donaghy was saying
the NBA office would suggest refs look at the fouls they were calling
in a certain situation. Basically to even things out.

If I'm the NBA, and you want to remove any doubt about the NBA putting its thumb on the scale,
why not allow the NBA Ref Association to be their own company?
Something that has no direct connection with the NBA?

refs being able to stretch series, keep games close etc. does more for their bottom line then removing people's doubts.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I knew some NBA refs had other jobs, but I always thought they were salaried.
So the amount of games they officiated didn't matter.

18. "really perplexing coaching from Minny these last two games."
In response to Reply # 0

Minny was pretty much playing Denver straight up the first two games then went to doubling in Minneapolis and got cooked for a game and half. they more or less quit in the 2nd half tonight and ALMOST got back in it but they had dug too much of a hole by then.

also, like i said for them it really depends on mental fortitude and maybe they don't have it. KAT sure don't.

lastly, Minny dominated on offense (and defense) when Rudy was out and i think there is something to that with spacing and movement that plays into the strengths of Minny's role players (Ant gonna get his regardless). additionally, it don't help when Rudy gets fouled and cant make FTs.

*IF* that is something, it would take HUGE balls by Minny's staff to sit Rudy (or at least play him way less).

Love that by the young guns, last night. On the road, PJ Washington became Steph Curry, Gafford and Jones became the Twin Towers, no one could make a shot except for one guy, Wiggins missing point-blank layups....Shai just kept making tough shot after tough shot after tough shot...with a regular look on his face, until the rest of the team woke up. The HUGE threes by Dort and Chet, the J-dub baseline dunk and 2 big freethrows from Chet were all MUCH needed...but, Shai put the team on his back for 3.5 quarters.

In response to Reply # 0

I hope the Bill Simmons rumor about Turner losing NBA broadcasting rights isn't true, but I suppose the NBA cares mainly about getting top dollar to fatten their respective pockets, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised if that's the case.

I just hope it isn't Amazon that landed the broadcasting deal, but as I type out my response, that's about the only streaming partner I could see outbidding Turner for broadcasting rights. Truly stinks since I pretty much despise most things pertaining to Amazon in recent years.

wouldnt NBC also throw that quartet a bunch of money to do same show on their channel?? or is it like a thing where those personalities are stuck under contract with TNT beyond them losing NBA rights..? (i know, wtf else would kenny smith do on TNT besides talk hoop)

In response to Reply # 27

What I read could be wrong, but I read that Ernie is bound to staying at Turner even if they lose their NBA broadcasting rights. I'm assuming the former players can be bought out, but I could be wrong.

Outside of that, if it's NBC, I'd be down since assuming NBC will put the games on Peacock to charge folks extra coin to get a better ROI, that's far better than having to stomach paying for Amazon Prime. Given the limitless dollars Amazon seems to have compared to NBC, I'd be surprised if that's the case, but hopefully my skepticism is incorrect.

Also, even assuming it's NBC getting Turner's share of games, that'll be a bit different from the old old olden times when NBC used to air NBA games since they'll only get weekday games for the most part while ABC/ESPN will get to air the majority of primetime weekend games.

about 2 or 3 years ago? Given that he appears to like the job of opining on basketball (and also given that two or so of his non-basketball talk related shows have flopped) I'd be surprised if he quits being a talking head if/when the Turner deal goes belly up.

Part of what makes that show go are the producers that help write and prepare the show. Those gags come from them.
I mean, sure, you could just sign Shaq, Kenny and Charles (just now reading that reply above about Ernie), but I don't think the show would be the same.

talking about Turner potentially losing basketball coverage and Inside the NBA dying. He did an interview with Dan Patrick and he doesn't sound at the prospect of losing the show based on the quotes I read.

Interesting he's allowed to discuss this since I don't think anything is official yet, unless I'm mistaken.

Bwahahaahahahahaahaha! Not Keef! I immediately think of Why Me Baby (and the remix with LL).

I lowkey blame this on the Spurs dynasty era. Timmay got pretty ridiculous. And Tony Parker would throw himself at the ground and lay out like he got hit with a steel chair like 2x a week at least.

And sure, it wasn't just them. Hell, if we're being honest, crying for calls footage is available to ~ errbody from like 1975 on. But I have it in my head that cats now look at the Spurs like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRfy1yorkec

Also, yes, KAT is soft AF. that said, he's gotta fouled a bunch of times this series and not gotten a single call.

which i think is to say i don't like Minny's coaches. they never seem to be working the refs (or if they are they never show it) they just seem to kinda sit there and take it.

Mike Malone is a certified bitch, but his bitchassness is working.

classic strong guy stuff. shaq, bron, dwight, guys like that. they get hit all the time near the rim but are so strong that they can just power through everything so it looks like they aren't being hit or the hit isn't affecting them, even when they are getting hacked

i'm not even sure if you polled Wolves fans that it'd come out in his favor.

it's just, they gotta cheer when he does something right/good.

any fans he does have probably stops within the Wolves fanbase.

Especially after his recent comments?

If given the choice I’d take watching him get ragdolled by Shaq over getting out finessed by Dream

That said, Dream is more likely to actually whoop his ass if he got too out of line for too long, so there’s that.

That dude has no idea.

Didn't the Mavs go small on the Jazz three or so years ago and render his useless in a playoff series? I don't remember if that was the series Luka was out for the majority of the series and it was Brunson that led the Mavs or not.

Anthony Edwards is gonna be a GOAT, but he really hurt his team last night. he looked checked out mostly. i'll shoot him some bail the Nuggets played him smart and when he's doubled it's not like there's great options to pass to for a bucket. that said, he coulda done WAY more even with how the Nuggets were scheming him.

i'm very curious to see if Minny fights back at home and pushes it to Game 7 or if they give up the ghost.

to the point i almost feel bad for him (like i imagine there's a "wolves team grouptext chat" and then a 2nd one without gobert)..worst part about it is he's big/strong enough to be dangerous with his goofiness. when gordon went up for that dunk? (if rudy's half a second slower couldve been the dunk of the past several years imo..) but i was also cringing when AG was mid-air, because of rudy's way of being..he'd give no second thought to a dangerously wreckless contest. in same way he gave no 2nd thought to doing the money-gesture again...after im sure getting a call from NBA office about it just a couple months ago.

then add to rudy's goofiness...KAT's downhill movements make him look like one of those car dealership inflatable tube dolls? lol those two together can be a hard watch... poor Ant

Crazy thing is I don't even know wtf Rudy was supposed to do better last night. The best player of his generation was alllll the way in his bag. Anyone lined up against him was getting 40.

Lord knows Rudy's an easy target but that game was about what Jokic did, not what Rudy didn't.

kinda saw it (the defense) that first game after trade with gafford (brings athleticism kleber/powell dont have & headier game than wood/mcgee..). then PJ just been like "i guess i should up my game too.." and the rookie's just matching the example set by gafford. Gafford is underrated, he was just stuck in washington wizards-hell..but that kid should give you a dbl-dbl if you give him 25+min

edit: not to take away from luka/ky..they make everyone better too

after Donovan Mitchell got hurt after the All-Star Break, hope of a redemption tour in the playoffs was over.

But the Cavs sort of got one: survived the more physical team that took away all of their offense vs. Orlando (after Allen got hurt by Schwanz Wagner), and competed with Boston, with their lone win being a blow out.

JBB will hopefully be relieved from duties as coach.

But the rest hinges on what Donovan will do next.

I think he stays.

But the rumor mills and hit pieces are really pointing to this team blowing it up in someway afterward.

a lot of people are hoping Allen gets traded for a wing (there is none worth a shit that can be acquired in a trade IMO. I want Cam Johnson but the Nets are stingy and don't have a team of which to speak). We're gonna get ass if he does get traded.

Rich Paul is making the Garland discourse even worse. Even IF he would be traded who is going to take him after this disaster of a season? Maybe San Antonio. I'd hate that because he would go there and get at least 2 wings with Wemby and people will be crying about what could have been.

Idiots are hoping LeBron comes back.

Injuries derailed this season. JBB doesn't have the imagination and tactical strategy to really get through the playoffs.

this is 2018 level hell.

Oh well.

Go Nuggets and Mavs I guess. Wolves if they wake up.

but is especially glaring in this series. Gafford, Jones and Lively are making anything at the basket tough or impossible. Which means, if the shots aren't falling, it's all bad. Win or lose, Presti will certainly address that in the off-season. All that said, I LOVE this team. I hope the youngins can gut one out in Dallas and get back home Sunday for Game 7.

Chet is OK at the 5 but if you gonna be going up against the Mavs bigs, Jokic and co that's going to be a problem.

Other than that the shooting was definitely cut off, SGA couldn't make up for it.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

they've yet to complete this roster fully. giddey is a poor fit and they need some rebounding and bulk in the front court. should be able to solve both problems in the off-season

worse than anyone I have ever seen. Straight up double dribbling is a huge part of this guy's game....its bonkers.

Ever since BJ Armstrong pointed it out I can't unsee it.

Its like when I first noticed Lupe gasping all over Food & Liquor. Once you notice that shit the experience is fucking ruined because there's no going back.

It was already tough to watch Luka because of all the crying and fake tough guy screams...but I can't even appreciate his game anymore. He's straight up cheating in front of everyone's faces.

Ice cold 85% of the night and just doesn’t give up, and the attitude becomes infectious.

I remember this team vs Memphis a few years back and thinking they were the most fragile and whiny team. Fast forward tonight they overcome a double digit deficit in a game 7 on the road against the defending champions.

he played 47 minutes, including the entire 4th quarter. which is crazy since they were up by 20 early in the 3rd, so it's not like they didn't have an opportunity to let him sit for a few minutes. that's on Malone.

My guess is Luka eats well and Dallas takes it, but my heart is with Minny right now for taking out Denver.

Like I said earlier, aside from Gobert, I like the team the fine. And I'll likely root for them the rest of the way out.

I'm not dancing on the Nuggets' grave either, as I liked them well enough too. Jokic did his thing and will continue to do so. I figure they'll try to address their needs and be right back next year.

Yea Jokic has nothing to be ashamed about, he played amazing considering the amount of minutes he was logging.

edit, MPJ played like absolute dog shit, but I guess one brother in prison for a decade and another one looking for a job in Indonesia bc of a lifetime ban gotta be tough to deal with. I'll give him a pass this year

But coming out of this it is abundantly clear we need to get deeper. The only way to do that is a trade. He's probably the guy you'd pull the trigger on at this point. He was fucking *awful*, and you can't give him the excuses you can apply to Jamal (clearly hurt) or Jokic (clearly gassed).

i guess my question would be: with his salary, and his general defensive inabilites, who's taking him?

due to his injuries or whatever, he's basically turned into a spot up 3 point shooter and you can find guys to do that for WAY less money and whoever you did find would probably be a better defender too.

gonna be tough.

He's one of the best shooters in a league that is all about shooting, you can't teach his size and he's relatively young. You hear the Klay comps get tossed around w/r/t him, and maybe a team on the cusp could gas themselves up into believing it (to be super clear - prime Klay way, way, way better).

And I agree w/ your general point... I wouldn't expect a king's ransom or anything. He's just the guy who is probably the most expendable (Jamal and AG are still non-starters for me) and gives you actual ROI (ruling out everyone else on the squad).

In response to Reply # 139

that would hurt personally but i think it could work in that role AND i think even with his own injury history and age he's a LITTLE more versatile than MPJ. like, he WANTS to defend he's just really average at it now. MPJ don't really wanna defend at all.

but...whatever happens with Klay really comes down to what kinda money he'll take (and i mean TAKE not what he wants, LOL).

DLo i'm indifferent too personally but again, i think he could do the job and he too is more versatile than MPJ (to me).

in reference to last night's game yet, I'll mention his name; Naz Reid was huge for the Wolves in that fourth quarter; no only for his offense, but that shot block he had against Jokic stunned me as it went down.

gobert can go back to playing free safety vs dal (where i think hes most effective)

id actually say pacers have more chance of beating boston than dallas beating min (in the most boston way.. boston wallops them by 25 in gm1, takes their foot off gas like they always do, pacers gut it out in 6)

Jrue Holiday and Derrick White should be capable enough defensively to slow down the Pacers from creating open shots. But like you astutely pointed out, the Celts got beat by inferior teams in this playoff run more than once by giving up open three point shots. Assuming Holiday and Derrick White are able to keep the Pacers perimeter players from running amok, it'll have to be Siakam that will have to be the difference maker for the Pacers offensively for the Pacers to stand a shot at pulling off the upset IMO.

Keep in mind, I'm completely factoring out Porzingis of being capable enough to be a factor for the Celts. The same game when he had that weird calf injury, the same leg was almost covered in either stocking and/or kinesiology tape so badly that it looked as if he was dressed as a mummy for Halloween. I'd be stunned if he's able to play multiple games for the Celts during this playoff run.

one thing that can't be ignored is how Indy's role/bench players have grown during this run.

i think that is a big factor that most won't taken into account when comparing matchups/players across the board.

In response to Reply # 133

Health and numbers are two factors the Pacers have an advantage over the Celts for sure. In theory, the Celts superior defense should be able to slow down the Pacers; I suppose we'll all see if that will be the case.

This isn't the first time it's been said, but the Celtics' love of chucking up three could play right into the Pacers hands, especially if the three pointers aren't falling and the Pacers are able to rebound those misses to create easy fast break points for themselves. I'm hoping the Celts will try to have Tatum and Jaylen Brown bullyball the Pacers in the interior to slow the pace of the game down.

In response to Reply # 129

Nor would I underestimate the NBA's desire to see Luka and Kyrie in the finals, lol.

Minnesota's the better team, but in a close game, I'm always inclined to favor the team with better shotmaking. And Dallas has the two best shot makers in the series. If Dallas can avoid getting *completely* obliterated on the glass, it can be a real series. Especially since I strongly suspect Luka and Kyrie will get to the line a considerable amount.

the 4's and 5's the Mavericks have compared to last year's team are much better on both sides of the ball. They aren't as good as the Wolves are defensively, but Dallas' bigs should provide some resistance to the Wolves.

Not that I want to Mavs to win since the Knicks will get their pick this year, but I suspect PJ Washington will be an ex-factor for the Mavs since he appears to be a somewhat decent third scoring option for the Mavericks; in particular his three point shooting. I'm assuming Kidd will design sets with Washington getting open looks when Luka and/or Kyrie are doubled in half court sets.

if they hit 40 percent of the ones they missed? Minny loses by at least 15.

like, it just looked like Minny was completely winging it on both ends of the floor.

also, Finch or Nori, whoever was in charge? they made some HEAD SCRATCHING resting decisions during the time when Dallas was starting to take over the game, with Towns, Gobert AND Ant all resting.

really weird game...even the "vibes."

just imagine what happends if the mavs & kyrie win the championship in the boston garden

To people like US, a record is a piece of history. A moment in time.
Most people don't get it.

Assuming Dallas goes to the Finals from here, this sort of ascent stopped dead in it’s tracks in a playoff run is a part of so many superstar stories.

He’ll be straight.

however, i could not account for how bad Ant has been, and you can directly point to him (not that he's the ONLY one who has been bad by any means...hi KAT you bum) for trailing 3-0 because these games were close enough that if he's better, they win 2 of those.

he was overall better tonight especially in the 3rd quarter but he wilted in the 4th where he got bottled up again and made some killer mistakes.

but Kyrie definitely played a huge role in the Nets team not performing up to their expectations; I'm specifically referring to this stuff he pulled away from the court..

A big part of Kyrie seemingly flourishing thus far (outside of Dallas revamping their roster to improve their defensive efforts, which doesn't get nearly enough mention from folks) is Kyrie (thus far) staying out of trouble and strictly balling out. I don't think that's been this case for him outside of his years in Cleveland.

Harden was giving his maximum effort on a torn hamstring

KD was playing w a sprained meniscus and a host of other injuries and balled out

Kyrie was the main culprit (along w Covid and the vaccine mandate)

and the one who fucked it all up

I mean there was some idiocy down the stretch, but you gotta remember only Kyrie has really been up here before. The rest of these dudes are young and/or inexperienced...you're going to see brain farts and inconsistencies. When Luka threw the oop to Derrick Jones I thought "here they come it's over" (I'm sure I'm wrong but that felt like the longest hang time for an oop I've ever seen in my life)

That doesn't excuse Kat playing like old bitch ass Kat for the three biggest games of his life and then waiting til an elimination game to awaken, but I'm just saying you have to allow for growing pains with these guys when they're still this green.

I don't think it's going to happen but I'd do anything to get at least two more games out of these teams, I love watching them if this is the level they're going to play at.

as soon as the game tipped off damn near it's like they forgot they had a game today, and they've certainly played like they think it's an off day.

that moment w/ about 10 mins left in the 3rd when Ant just quit and was jogging 3 steps behind Luka as he made an easy bucket was the last straw.

I knew Minny was gone lose when Ant was woofing after the Denver series and told someone in the press scrum that he “had Jamal in handcuffs”. He tried to bring that same energy to this series and Kyrie and got his legs cooked the fuck off. He’s gone be a dude for many years to come, but he got humbled this series.

which team was better defensively? I'm guessing Minnesota, but I'm asking you because the stats might say otherwise.

Given how easily Dallas was able to overwhelm Minnesota's defensive capabilities, I honestly don't like Boston's chances in this Finals matchup. Offhand, it'll be key for Boston to avoid double-teaming too much as that leaves open three point shots for the Mavs, which is think is just as crucial to their success in addition to Luka and Kyrie going off. I imagine this sounds overly simplistic, but minimizing open three pointers for the non Luka and Kyrie Mavs players will be key for Boston.

Sure, Ant is Ant. But they are completely locked in to 14 feet of suckas, their awesome supporting pieces will want more prominent roles and to get paid more, and Conley has 1-2 more years maybe.

Plus, look at their immediate comp in the west:
- OKC has arrived, and has an embarrassment of riches to get whatever else they need.
- Took a historic collapse from the Nuggets (grimacing as I write this) to get past them in 7.
- And we just saw what Dallas can do against 'em. Lol.

Plus... Wemby coming.

Idk, feels like this was kinda their moment and they fucked it off spectacularly. Oh well!

Walking into a rebuild on its face is probably fun if you believe in your ability as a builder

But walking into dysfunction where there’s a bunch of competing agendas and you’re inheriting an overall identity crisis? That’s probably not that fun.

Klutch would’ve had Windhorst carrying the Hurley smear campaign water by January. Who wants that when you’re already the alpha of your own domain?

6/70 is enticing, for sure, but outside of that, who cares? How do you succeed at this job right now? Expectations are completely unrealistic because it's the Lakers, then you have the LeBron of it all. I'm a little surprised Hurley passed, but just a little. He's a made man at one of the best coaching gigs in the world. He doesn't *have* to take an NBA gig at a high profile shitshow just to take it.

The way the reporting made it sound was he was gonna come in and be Spo or Brad Stevens with a deliberate 6 year plan and for the most part be at the top of the hierarchy. “Culture setter” bla bla bla. Like the Mike Tomlin or Sean McVay archetype where the coach IS the culture and operation. So I assumed it was gonna be like $14M a year or something. The offer he declined is nothing to sneeze at but for the outsized influence he was rumored to be getting that money doesn’t stop me in my tracks.

Like, I'm not convinced 20 million over 6 years is *that* big a raise given the COL difference between Los Angeles and fucking Storrs, lol.

The Lakers are looking for their 8th coach in 13 years. Like... the writing's on the wall. The odds are incredibly, incredibly high you'll be fired within 3-4 years, *even if you find relative success.* So, like... what's the point? Stay where life is great.

Plus Hurley's such a Jersey guy, he'd 100% rather wait for the Knicks or the Nets.

I can’t wait for new ownership.

This maw & paw Kent operation is fucking tired.

If their vision was to establish a program and shift the culture over the long term, the offer was low.

That said, there is some danger in that level of investment because it both sets a precedent and puts them on the hook for a serious raise in the next one.

I’m not sure where I fall on whether he was worth that proverbial Brinks truck, but I do not have faith in Jeanie to steer this back to glory.

It’s time for a change.

I’m not convinced Hurley is all that good without them….though credit to him for recognizing that his offense was shit and TRY REAL HARD will only go so far, and bringing them in.

But I’m suprised they haven’t gotten head coaching jobs.

And I'd imagine part of Hurley's maneuver here was to continue to get them paid at an elite level for an assistant.

Ultimately, this will end-- I firmly believe Hurley will bolt when the Knicks or Nets job comes knocking, and at that point, one of those two assistants will be the next head coach at UConn, and the other will be a HC for another high major. But if everything's rolling right now, and the perfect opportunity hasn't come knocking, there's great value in staying put. Look at the gigs landed by people like Tommy Lloyd and Jerome Tang-- I know there are others, but sticking with a winner until your dream gig comes along is a damn good strategy imo.

This offer didn’t even make it a choice. Had they actually threw the godfather offer at him with the understanding that “This is your team” - why would he leave such an amazing spot? He’s a god at UConn.

It’s laughable at this point. Rob has mostly been good (Westbrook aside) - but the franchise is just horribly run. Jeanie can’t do it. She’s had time. They’re just so enamored by flashiness and names.

I think it’s silly to assume he’d come in with the same drill sergeant mentality. I think he’d be something more close to a Spolestra or Thibodeau , preaching consistent habits and accountability first.

I liked the Lakers idea because there’s few, if any really, NBA superstar head coaches anymore. I guess Pop still counts. In the NFL the coaches are sometimes as big as the players - McVay, Belichick, Jim Harbaugh…if nothing else I thought it would just be fun to see Danny Hurley and Lebron James on the same bench.

It hasn’t been seen as much the last two years because they were winning….though he still challenged fans to fight him, after one of their few losses last year.

A few years ago I’d turn UConn games on if I saw they were losing, just in hopes of seeing him get ejected.

He’d have to make major adjustments to how he deals with referees, and I’m not sure he can. Terrible fit for the NBA, IMO.
