Grumpy middle aged sports fan?? I'll be that.

I hate that shit. He hasn't won anything yet but youngins are eager to erase history and "sports media" just chases the dollar.

Hoops fans do it the most, by far.

I’ve long reached my “who cares” stage when people start talking it, though I often wonder when and why it became the standard way to discuss new great b-ball players.

Growing up, I remember arguing, like, if Allen Iverson was better than Gary Payton. Not if Allen Iverson was better than Jerry West or something.

The example I used is just the most well known instance of this. I too am unsure where it comes from.

True. Seems like even the kids now are engaging in this stuff though. They like being edgy though, so bagging on old players seems like one of the ways they do that. They also have YouTube, so can easily see these old players if they want to. We didn’t have that.

>and it happens most in basketball bc thats the only team sport
>you can play a whole ass game of it 1v1

Yeah, I considered that angle. Probably is a factor.

I'm wildly skeptical of the idea that comparing a new player to an old player makes the old player's legacy vanish like dust in the wind. It's not like anyone's saying he's better than Jordan-- they're saying his style of play reminds people of Jordan. Which I think is totally fair.

If anything, comparing new players to old players serves to remind young sports fans about history. If we refuse to ever compare new players to old players, the old players are far more likely to vanish from the conversation entirely.

Compare him to his era and talk about why he is dominant in his era. Oh wait, that can't be done because we haven't waited long enough to see if he will dominate HIS ERA.

The last player that was being deemed as unstoppable (Jokic) is being stopped as we speak. Why push a narrative that can't legitimately be discussed until 10 years from now?

why are you talking about "unstoppable"? is there a particular quote you're referencing or is that a strawman for you to knock down?

second of all, unless someone overtly predicted that Jokic would never lose a playoff series, i dont know what that would prove? who is being shown to have been hasty is lavishing praise upon Nikola Jokic?

but Ant doing some Jordan-ish things at times, and stylistically I can see some similarities.

I have yet to see anyone legitimately say Ant is as good as Jordan, or even Ant is the next Jordan. Most I've seen anyone venture to say is he's doing some things that remind us of Jordan. Then we all clutch our pearls like we didn't mean to say it.

I gave up on a 'next Jordan' after Harold Miner.

That's what he is, he's not a "Baby Jordan".

He seems to have a better understanding of the overall game than Jordan did at his age.

Not coming at you though, my initial post wasn't reacting to statements made on OKP but I see how it looks that way.
