or has the NIL/transfer portal nullified whatever advantage playoff inclusion was supposed to bring?
I know this type of shift would probably need YEARS before it came to fruition. But I'm just not buying that kids are gonna turn down the elites to go to UCF because there's now a chance to make the playoffs. If the NIL money ain't right I don't think any of these kids will care about the chance to be the 12th seed in a playoff they have no chance at winning.

and Michigan's transfer activity isnt really like other places (for better or worse depending on POV) bc the school wont accept late term undergrad transfers for the most part. Terrance Shannon and Caleb Love both wanted to come play basketball at Michigan and neither were able to enroll.
guys like Wallace, Nugent, Henderson, Barner were all grad transfers.

I'm not a fan of the portal craziness either but it's here and it's really just an extension of recruiting at this point. Get with it or get left behind.
I guess it challenges our sensibilities in that we had this romanticized notion of kids getting recruited out of HS who had popped outta the womb wanting to buckeyes or wolverines and this is such a dream come true yada yada...but those scenarios probably represented <1% of all recruitments. HS recruits have always made their decisions out of self-interest (who can offer them the best opportunities) and the portal is no different.

i never felt that way. what i appreciate was that wherever someone landed, we watched kids and relationships mature over a period of years, and then when it was over they were Yellow Jackets, or Buckeyes, or Trojans, or whatever...forever.
the things about cfb that are buckling the most under late capitalism are specifically the things i like the most about it.

Which is why I call bullshit on all these complaints about these changes. These aren’t huge changes. Sure, teams move to new conferences but that has been happening for a long ass time and its not like the actual game is changing.

it did strike me as a bit of preemptive plea copping given that mich is about to face some lean years...
it's not going to be some overnight thing where people suddenly stop caring (especially if your team is balling out)...but certainly over a duration of time I can see some people fading out.
march madness has been a slow deterioration from where it was 20+ years ago.

you gotta keep in mind that we got 4 mich/osu fans in this convo. we are going to be more reactionary to these changes given what the rivalry game has meant to our cfb upbringings. these changes make the game next to meaningless now.

That would be WILD. I went to Michigan, I’m not just a fan. That’s my school and I’ll ride for that team regardless of anything and I’ll always care.
I’ve said in other posts that 2003-4 felt like the end of an era just based on the amount of change going into this next season. Super conferences, NIL based transfers, coaches retiring or leaving for the NFL, playoff expansion, etc. I’m glad we won a chip during this era. We never won one during the BCS era. Next year starts a new era and the game is absolutely changing. I think teams will start being build for the playoffs specifically instead of being built to win in conference. Partially because with the huge conferences I think the conference identities will be diluted (especially in the Big 10). But also because with a longer playoff tournament it will be about the teams who are best able to go from week to week in that format instead of having a perfect/near perfect regular season.
I hope Michigan does well in the new format. But I'm still very happy that we won one in the 4 team playoff era.

i think more inclusion makes me "happier" it's just that "happier" isn't the right word. i'm just for inclusion (to a point). i think beyond top 16 you lose too much competitiveness. up to that point? the more the merrier.

i just think 16 is about the spot where competitiveness of any signifigance starts to decline rapidly.
yes to 12 and 4, but i think the intrigue you gain with potential upsets is worth it. a 16 beating a 1 is typically tons more compelling than 4 beating 1.

with 6+6 a jabroni conference champ was gonna get a spot and possibly (probably) leapfrog a team finishing 3rd or 4th in a power 5. Now, they will just stay in the 20s to complain that the field needs to be bigger. The constant goal post moving gets so old and lessens and lessens cfb.......imo.
