"NBA Regular Season Week 16/17/All Star Weekend"

Damn, the Cavs are 14-1 over their last 15???

Lakers nearly blew it last night. Classic.

Bron is about 200 points away from 40k points. 2nd in active players in Durant who's got around 29k. Just insanity.

Embiid's done, right?

I rarely if ever check the standings and don't play that close of attention honestly...the way the Cavs are talked about I figured there were 5th or 6th. No idea.

I haven't paid close enough attention to say he is MVP worthy, but Mitchell has been underrated for a while imo...so I don't doubt it.

Embiid out, Bucks fucked up and hired a 3 quarter coach...Cavs could make some noise.

right now.

Honestly, there's like 10 teams right now i would not be shocked to see that they made a finals run.

Boston has obviously looked the best so far but they have the ability to look so bad while winning.

/If i had to pick right today, i'd go clips over boston in the finals.

Just checked the standings and saw there's a 4 way tie for 1st in the west...holy shit.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

But I don't disagree.

Clips, OKC, Nuggets seem like the only REAL contenders in the West - though OKC obviously has no postseason experience. I'm not sold on Minnesota, but they're obviously doing great and can certainly make a run. Suns COULD be a dark horse but...

Boston seems like the only real pick in the East right today, but can absolutely make a case for NYK and Cleveland too. Obviously, Philly was right there too - but if Embiid is out for the year, that's up in flames. The Bucks could certainly be healthy come playoff time and then watch out.

It's wide open, for sure.

Clippers/Boston in the Finals is my red wedding so no thanks.

and i'd honestly throw Dallas in there too.

Once we get closer to the playoffs, that number may whittle down especially if injuries become a factor

Nets on a treadmill , going nowhere fast

Pistons searching for an identity

I want Westbrook and Harden to get rings to put the cherry on top of their first ballot HOF careers

Harden was the only one really dedicated to winning in Brooklyn while Kyrie was smoking blunts on IG live and being a dickhead about the vaccine and KD was too spineless to hold him accountable

Westbrook has really won me over ever since he signed with LAC. And the way he’s mentored the young guys on that team

plus it would be fun to watch the envy pour out of lakers fans if the Clips won an actual title compared to that Mickey Mouse asterisk *️⃣ bubble chip that the lakers won

Fairly interesting. If I'm not mistaken, all the playoff teams that made trades thus far (Knicks, Pacers, Sixers, Bucks) are all dealing some some degree of their starters being injured or their playing time being affected due to injuries.

**edit**

Just dawned on me that the Bucks and the Sixers actually agreed to a trade; how common is it for two title contending teams in the same conference to agree to a trade?

Burks and Bojan will strengthen their bench, and are the type of dudes Thibs will go to.

don't give up any really high draft capital. They might be gearing up for the "F-U" move.

not with these moves, though they help.

but as you rightly pointed out, they have enough draft capital and pieces now for the move that puts them over the top, at least on paper.

always gotta prove it on the court, of course.

Thibs did this already when Burks was on the Knicks roster before he went to Detroit.

Outside of assuming Leon Rose has his eyes on Booker, I'm clueless as to who the Knicks are going to target with all those first round picks. I have my doubts one way of the other for the Knicks landing Donovan Mitchell or Embiid.

In addition, I wonder how much Leon Rose is going to re-sign OG and Hartenstein for. Both have been studs for the Knicks; I hope he doesn't try to play himself in terms of saving Dolan money and ends up scaring them to a potential contender.

Despite what nattering talking heads may say, the team isn't going to trade Klay or Dray (can't trade the latter). The only "tradeable" pieces would Wiggins or CP's expiring deal, and any trade that involves them would have to involve Kuminga, which would really be a mistake.

I'm still of the belief that this roster has the potential to make things interesting. Kuminga is really starting to beast. Wiggins has been finally stepping up. I like Moody, Davis, and Quinones. The defense will be better when GPII is back. Not predicting a tittle or anything, but I don't think we're pushovers.

having to play those extra games in the play-in is a pretty brutal load on the body, especially given's Steph's age.

I wonder if the Warriors will try to load manage Steph to save him some wear and tear; I also wonder if the Warriors will have the luxury of being able to rest towards the end of the season or if the standings will be too competitive to allow for Steph to rest up.

They are 11th right now....with Hou behind them dying for a berth.

Even if they are play -in secure, there is too much at stake between being a 10, 9, 8, 7, or 6th seed. Playing Steph them extra minutes during the reg season to secure Ws could actually save his body from having to play 1-2 play in games on the road.

Wonder if Golden State can sign a player from the buy-out market or if they are over the salary apron rules to prevent them from doing so. Not 100% sure how that works if I'm being honest.

Curry seemingly needs some at this point; especially since there is so much parity out West.

After he shoved Jarrett Allen to the floor which resulted in Allen rushing through his own teammates to shove him

Cavs went on a 21-0 run

score was 59-51 Cavs. 5 minutes later (no lie) the score was 80-51.

Final Score 118-95. Fuck outta here.

In response to Reply # 0

(kinda like "Last Chance Kitchen" on the bravo show top chef..)

so always after the deadline, all these guys get traded and then bought out/waived by the team they were sent to... what if:

spencer dinwiddie
chimezie metu
ish smith
danilo gallinari
cory joseph
furkan korkmaz
james bouknight
killian hayes
thaddeus young
(you get the idea--15 of them..)

all now made up their own team for the last 30 games of the season...each existing NBA team plays them once thru the end of regular season..(and each season this "The Expendables" team played in a different city--think like the Seattles, Tampas, Louisvilles..)

why are they doing this? because The Expendables obviously want a 2nd chance to get back into the NBA..this gives the other teams an easily viewable way to scout those players anew--and see who they might want to have replace an actual roster guy if they lose them to injury for the playoffs (eg Clippers killed the last 3rd of the season and ended up with the #1 seed , but they lost beard with 2 weeks left in reg season... dinwiddie "cooked" on Last Chance NBA Kitchen, averaging a double/double...Clippers with the first pick going into the playoffs select dinwiddie)

all this to say i bet anything the Expendables would be at least a .500 team

I mean, there aren't even THAT many in NBA history...and in the last decade, it's only been done 9x (Hasan Whiteside has 5 of them, btw...and the others belong to AD, Clint Capela, and Joakim Noah).

And this dude did it as a ROOKIE.

Side note - completely insane to have had more 70 point games than 10 block games in years.

In response to Reply # 0

For. the. play. in.

For at best, maybe 8th.

The Bulls FO had a press conference after the trade deadline,
and said that this current team is competitive.

This team? That's fighting for position with the Magic and Hawks?
I loved the idea of the play in when it was first introduced,
but now I kinda hate it. These teams are using it as evidence to keep
horrible teams together.

Brian Windhorst said this on his podcast: The Bulls are a team that's in a rebuild, but the FO doesn't know it.

We should have traded LaVine, DeRozan and Vucevic last deadline.

Then we'd have draft picks to go along with Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu and Patrick Williams.
White is in the running for MIP, and Ayo is slowly putting together some consistent games.

But no, we doubled down. They're probably going to extend DeRozan.
We can't trade LaVine since he threatened to get foot surgery.
They WON'T trade Alex Caruso, our best asset because he alone sets
the culture for this team.

This team is going to look exactly the same come opening day this October, and that's...

depressing.

But I'd like to see Tatum in particular attack the rim even more. Sometimes he lets the defense off the hook by launching a three over a guy he could easily beat off the dribble. I kinda want him to do it more like Shai where he takes the 3 if needed or if left open, but it isn't the first option so many times.

I have to wonder what'll happen if they flame out in similar fashion in this years post-season. Given that Giannis signed that extension and that Dame is making big bank, I honestly have no clue how much freedom the Bucks will have in terms of re-tooling their roster assuming underperform to the franchise's goals for this season.

To be clear, I'm not a big Doc Rivers fan, but at the same time, I only think it's fair to give the team time to gel since The Clippers were once thought to be dead in the water after the Harden trade and now they have one of the league's better records, so I definitely think it's potentially too soon to party on the Bucks' downfall.

No matter what, I have to imagine Giannis is definitely highly focused to avoid going out like a sucker in this year's playoffs.

At first, it looked like Mil shoulda still beat miami even with giannis missing half the series but Miami was on some shit last year.

I’m legitimately bored of the dunk contest now, so I don’t have any expectations. Hopefully it’s just entertaining.

I’m looking forward to the 3 point contest - think it’ll be fun.

Jumping over things/people is impressive.

But is it really, at this level of athlete?

Especially when they’re ducking and the dunker isn’t actually clearing them?

Sure, my nuts aren’t grazing anyone’s head on a dunk. But it’s weird that people are so impressed when world class athletes do it in a contest, as as though nearly any any player selected at random couldn’t do the same.

Unless they’re clearing someone with their *entire* body, that shit is zzzzzz

It’s just jumping high and masks the fact that the actual dunk is just a plain old dunk with zero creativity.

Gordon and Lavine will probably remain the pinnacle of this comp, because they both brought out an insane level of creativity that nobody is even trying to match. That was the GOAT contest and we’ll probably never see that or anything like it again.

This shit was boring as fuck.

Not sure how Jaylen was in the finals. His dunks were the weakest of the 4.

I thought McLung's clap the ball dunk was the best of the night, and the judges boned him on it. I guess he deserved to win until you remember he's just a ringer

pretty forgettable all around this year. And I agree. I think jumping over people is old and stale. The use of props has just turned it into a gimmick contest, and barring the most amazing dunk ever, no one should never get a perfect score if they miss on the first try.

that the only way to fix what ails the league is to schedule fewer games?

- eliminate back to backs
- make “load management” extinct
- bring prestige back to the ASG
- use Christmas as your launchpad

Seems the only bulletproof solution is scaling the schedule down

Man I remember a time where the All Star and accompanying festivities were CANT MISS.
And even as I got older you could bank on the 4th quarter being must see TV. Now all the noise coming out of the game is media saying it was embarrassing and players just being thankful they didn’t get hurt.

It would make regular season basketball more like the post-season, when defenses are able to actually scheme for the specific opponent. Yes that happens to an extent now, but if you were always playing 2-3 straight games vs. a team it makes it more worthwhile to adjust defensive schemes. Which then begins the chess match of adjusting offensive plays…

This is a great and practical idea. Mix that with killing the back to backs and maybe they wouldn't have to drop the 20 or so games that people keep asking for.

I don't think the players have played "hard" since 2001 or so. There's really no percentage in it anymore, especially if you're preserving yourself for a title run. And I don't blame them in that respect.

Any and all "fixes" for the game itself are bound to fail. Like they already have. And giving it "stakes" like home-court advantage in the Finals, would be bad too. Even baseball figured out it was pointless and gave it up.

And really, the dunk contest has been past dead for decades now. They've put it on pause, brought it back, proclaimed that it's "back" every few years, but there's no more ways to make it interesting. Just put it out of its misery permanently.

The only thing that has an any appeal any more is the 3-Point contest, because it's so simple in execution that it's damn near impossible to screw up.

Media pundits just need to let it go.

I see a lot of this the same way.

For sure, the media's desperation for SOMETHING to hate on during the NFL offseason is a rough life for the NBA in general. They've already worked the average bro into basically hating a large % of the league's 'stars'. So its only right to hate the ASG too.

Mainly, I stopped expecting things from the ASG itself at least 20 years ago. And even before that, there was a decent amount of clowning around going on in some of those older games.

Now? With so many shooters on the court at any given time at the ASG, any lacking defense can lead to scores getting COMPLETELY out of hand to make it more obvious how lax it all is. Even in the clips people show to 'explain' how real it was 'back in the day', it would be late in the game if it was still kinda close by then. Otherwise, it was a lot of games where a couple of dudes would be hogging to try to get the MVP.

As long as the game is during the season, you can forget about it being some Dream Team scrimmage (unless they get a Magic type out there instigating and throwing some heeHEEEEE passes).

I LOVED the WNBA player against Steph. Steph needs to defend that title until he loses it. And maybe they need to expand it to 2 WNBA and 2 NBA. I'd watch that every time.

3-point contest: same thing. I've been down since Bird would do the first round or two with his jacket on. And then he'd take that shit off on some James Brown shit when it was time for the finals. Loved it. Dale Ellis. Steph's daddy. Craig Hodges. Jordan coming out there and getting a 5 (and it not coming up much cuz Nike's gotta sell shoes and shit). All of that!

The dunk contest isn't horrible to me now. It ain't Jorn/Neek of course but nothing is. I like that it is mostly condensed to dudes who appear to want to be there now. So its not like 2-5 dudes who barely practiced against 3 dudes who are trying to get rich off of the contest. But yes, major stars not being in it during their first few years in the league ain't it. It would be more fun with at least one of those dudes mixed into it. And of course, a little more noise talking beforehand would be fun too. As is, its dudes doing physically impressive stuff for an audience filled with people who have been highlighted, Sportscentered, video gamed, hot taked, and TikTok'd to death so almost nothing can impress them anymore. And even if they like something, their brain is programmed to launch into an immediate comparison/ranking. But that's hurting more shit than the dunk contest! Hehe.

In response to Reply # 89
Wed Feb-21-24 04:09 PM by Stadiq

The charity stakes should be super high and publicized. Whatever number that gets players to give even the slightest of shits...even if its the shame of not wanting to be too lazy when charity money is on the line

Dunk Contest? Let amateurs in. The stars are never going to join again. Amateurs have more to win, less to lose. I don't mean random G-leaguers. I mean have travelling/virtual try-outs for actual amateurs or something. There's still creative shit on youtube...

Don't get me wrong, the contest is past its peak. But just let street dudes go nuts. There's no way it could be worse. Let fans vote on some app or some shit.

Make the shoutout the finale Saturday Night. It should be individuals + teams. So say 4 dudes from the West, 4 dudes from the east...team results should tie into charities for each conference. Plus the usual individual winner. Again, big states for charity.

Get rid of the fucking skills challenge it is beyond stupid. Or move it to Friday night vs WNBA or something.

Tighten up the entire show. All the player interviews and shit is fucking brutal. No one cares about that shit. Fucking tone it down.

Don't get me wrong, none of this brings back the glory days. Its just a different era. But I'd be interested to see if things get less horrible.

The NFL was smart to turn it into a bunch of picnic games or whatever. There’s absolutely no incentive to go hard in these games, least of all when you’re midway through the season lol.

I don't think that would change anything. Instead of playing 60 of 82 games they'd play 40 of 60 or whatever.

Its just a different era/mentality.

I also don't think setting minimum games for awards is the way to go because that leads to an Embiid situation...plus whatever the minimum number is becomes about how many games players play. It could end up being a reverse incentive as the season comes to a close.

I have no idea what else there is, other than a financial component, but that seems very unfair to players who are legit hurt.

Keep hearing about how it aint like it used to be and I agree but this aint the old NBA.

I’ve never cared for All Star Games in any sport. They all seem like a waste of time and a party weekend.

Dunk contest needs some serious incentives to get superstars to play ball. Lebron fucked that up. What yall scared of? Shit is embarrassing that players are scared to compete in a silly ass dunk contest.

3 pt contest and skills competitions are fun.

and sometimes there’d be fun times. Like that Iverson/Marbury comeback year.

I can’t remember the last time I even turned it on though. It’s 100% pointless now. Old guys play harder at the Y at lunch hour. The Horticulturist could go for 20 in the modern All Star game.

for various reasons. There was a time when players genuinely didn’t like each other. Now with the AAU circuit most of these guys have been friends since they were teenagers. Player movement among teams is a lot more common than it used to be.

The East/west rivalry used to strong but they basically ruined that with all star drafts and Elam endings.

Like, no the game was never GOOD (I guess I’m one of the few who liked the ELAM way to end the game though), but the thrill of seeing all the stats together just doesn’t seem to matter as much when we’re flooded with every single star highlight in the regular season. Just doesn’t seem to matter. It’s fun to see the selections but…yeah, it’s boring.

I didn’t watch a second of the game this year. Once I saw it was supposed to start at 5pm and there was no box score at 540pm I just said nope.

you had players still bringing moderate intensity, playing defense but mixed with space for offensive highlights.

shit, i just looked at a random ass boxscore from 2004 and there were 32 free throw attempts and 25 fouls called

compared to sunday were there 5 free throws and 3 fouls

Literally no one is trying on defense outside of a lazy steal attempt, but i feel like that is newer in the last 10-15 years. I think it changed somewhere around lebron and the east starters dancing on stage while rose scorned.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

That it might tap into something deeper, the pride and ego of "fuck you, I'm not washed yet" vs. "fuck you, it's my time now." I don't know if it'd actually work, but I think it's interesting-- and I think a change to the format feels pretty necessary. (I too liked the ELAM ending, fwiw, lol.)

and i don't really see him slowing down until he gets to about Bron's age.

the stuff he does (movement, dribbling and shooting) is timeless. not saying he'll NEVER slow down cuz he will, he'll lose some quickness in his legs, etc., but i will have zero shock if he's still putting up 20+ ppg at age 40 if he plays that long and doesn't have any significant injuries between now and then.

surprises me. Evey now and then I'll see Anthony Edward do a dunk that seems to defy the laws of gravity...or Shai or Kyrie finish at the rim and think...how the fuck did he get that shot off? But, I swear, at least 1 or 2 times a game, Steph does something that makes me audibly react to it...in a room with just myself. I'm talking to myself like...how is this possible?

than Bron is to MJ, Russle, Magic, etc.

I know folks don't want to talk about it but *shrugs*

They each have 4 chips, 2 with superteam asterisks. And Steph's other two chips are with home grown talent...no trades for AD, Love, etc.

Steph actually bought into a system/coach, has had a bigger impact on how the game is played, hasn't come up short/under-achieved nearly as much, and is far less concerned about individual stats, etc.

I'd go top 10 on both but yea...Steph is on Bron's heels a lot more than Bron is on GOATs.

I’m serious.. lol. We ain’t winning shit but they finally play defense and look like they care about winning.

Real talk, Lamelo might be on the trade block soon with Miller now being the leader of this squad. Not sure Lamelo can play team ball or actually has the maturity to run the offense efficiently.

I was wrong about Miller too. I thought Scoob would be that dude but Miller is a beast.
