"January futbol: a tale of two Citys"

on paper we still have a title race, but with several other favorites wavering, definitely feels like City about to unleash their customary 20 game winning streak on us. FW podcast was pointing out today how their upcoming fixture was pretty soft for the next two months AND they basically have no one going to AFCON/Asia Cup AND De Bruyne is back on the scene, fuuuuuuu

I take solace in the facts that 1) Wilson is always a doomsayer, and 2) I think City can be had this year, more than previous. That said, Wilson is usually right, and I'm not.

I agree with you in general, but I remember him stating City would win the title last season, somewhat comfortably, with a ton of games left and Arsenal still a few points up, so while I'm still hoping the other teams stay in the race, it's looking dicier than I'd like

had a choice between Athletico Madrid at Granada and Barca at Real Betis. Went with the Real Betis match and shelled out more than I wanted...but its my first live European Soccer match.

Has anyone watched a match at Real betis or other la liga matches? Any thoughts?

Barça vs. Celta Vigo at Camp Nou
Espanyol vs. Barça at RCD (Espanyol's grounds)

Two very different experiences as you can imagine. Camp Nou is huge, people from all over the world, it's like going to Time Square almost. RCD was not like that at all. Just locals. I had a dude get in my face before the game for wearing a Barça jersey (so be mindful of what you're wearing and where you're sitting). The rivalry is intense. There was a small scale riot after the game.

That said, there is no alcohol permitted at La Liga games. You won't be able to buy a beer or anything, so if that's of interest to you, you'll have to do it before you get to the stadium. In Catalonia at least, the main food option is bocadillos (thin, sandwiches on baguettes). I remember I was able to bring a small bag inside, but it was just for carrying my coat. They'll inspect and see what you have.

Try to get there early to check out the stadium from different angles... Camp Nou has a museum attached, Betis as a historic club, might have something similar, but I'd recommend doing that on a different day than game day if possible.

But it's a really good time, I think soccer is just a more fun fan experience than American sports. Maybe try to learn a couple of the Betis songs/chants

I didn't know. I obviously knew they were rivals. But, I figured, these two clubs are in the same city, of course there will be Barça supporters there, of course there were be other folks wearing the blue and red. All the games I'd been to in the States even have a section for the opposing teams fans. It'll be fine. NOPE. Could not have been more wrong on that one lol. As soon as I got to the stadium, I noticed the glares I was getting. Then the dude jumped in my face asking me who the fuck I thought I was.

The environment was so hostile toward the players that you could actually see that they were rattled by it. I still think about the "puta Barça, puta Barça" chant bouncing back and forth across the stadium. Barcelona won the game 1-0 after Messi scored a pen when Neymar won a penalty off a handball in the box... and then late on the Espanyol goal keeper got sent off for a handball outside the box... so the fans were seething -- explaining the riot after the game.

The usual formula, but with WC 2022. Following Thiago Silva, Messi, CR7, and who all else...haven't gotten that far yet.

I guess it's aimed at a US audience primarily, because it's doing the same things as the F1 series, getting a bunch of people to explain how big the WC is, and how important it is to other nations, etc, which surely even the most casual fan already knows. Kind of like they're targeting a viewer who says to himself, "all right, well, I guess I'll take a look and see what this soccer thing is all about."

That said, the behind the scenes access is startling, and the footage is great.

last year he had 7+2 in 600 minutes of play, approximately double the rate of return of Brandt & Bynoe-Gittens, and almost triple that of Malen and Reus

and they arent exactly lighting the world on fire either with 33g and 30 points in 17 matches (5th). i was extremely pleased that PSV drew them for the knockout.

in positions he had no business playing while simultaneously killing any chance of the player developing confidence. one mistake or even an average 7 minute substitute appearance and he would be benched for multiple games. meanwhile his competition for playing time kept putting up mid performances. but i guess puli didn't run around enough like a headless chicken for tuchel's liking.

and then yeah, the geniuses at the club apparently came to the conclusion the he was "not chelsea quality" which is hilarious as his former teammates who were deemed better players fade into irrelevance.

He's put the core of the rebuilt squad together, so he can leave feeling good about the state of the club. Left the shelves stocked, basically. And the emotional burden has to be enormous, especially as sensitive and empathetic a guy as he seems to be. So good on him.

although these Barca players may need to be investigated

Araujo literally passing the ball to Villarreal in the box and then quitting on the play

I don't think Pena is on the take, he just may suck...how does a keeper punch the ball directly towards an advancing striker instead of just picking it up

In response to Reply # 36

Especially given that the last two or three coaches felt like they were placeholders while Xavi leveled up. And now he's gone too. The club is an absolute mess right now. There's no clarity around what you'll be able to actually do with the squad because the high-earning busts aren't going to take a pay cut to leave, which means the club is going to pressure any potentially profitable young players head to pastures greener in hopes of getting the money flowing again. On top of that, there's no "rebuilding" in Barca because there's no way the supporters or the socios will accept anything less than a fourth place finish.

The dude won the league last year. And halfway through the next season, he's "gotta go"?

The team is underperforming, obviously. And. The team has been dealing with lots of injuries. So many in fact that we've fielded two 16 years olds in a game a week ago. Another 17 year old a week later. And we don't have the money to plug some of the holes in the team. There's some stuff that's on Xavi, sure, but the idea that 6 months after winning a title, you've gotta go because your team is struggling is so problematic and creates a toxic culture.

and at a particularly horrible time for Malik Tillman, who's looked like a potential superstar, and for Ricardo Pepi, who has more goals as a backup than a lot of starters around the league.

out of the cup, dropped 2 pts in each of the last 2 games, and broke a 7 win streak over Ajax

Dest continues to ball out tho. i hope he stays another year or 2. hes growing, and really becoming a guy who can play either side equally as well as the other. hes become a lot more responsible defensively, and a lot better at combining with his winger in attack.

Tillman and Dest seem like easy starters in the Copa and i would be surprised if Pepi didnt start at least once.

lastly...wtf Miles Robinson? couldve come compete for a spot to play in the Champions League with your boys, but instead chose to be a highly subsidized farmer. McKennie, Weah, and Richards out there learning whole new positions just to keep competing *for minutes* with the best of the best. he'll never be an impact player for the USMNT.

Is that squad, as currently constructed, really any better than midtable? If you swapped in Pep or Klopp right now, would they really finish any better than maybe 9th?

And I don't think Poch is buying the groceries, anyway. Thought CFC put it a big new recruiting and personnel department after the sale.

I ordered one from an online shop years ago but I can't remember the name. Probably not around anymore.

I get emails from some place called ljersey but the website doesn't work (that might have been the place) but the emails also reference an edmondsoccershop whose website does work but I don't know if it's trustworthy.

Anyone know of somewhere else? These authentic jerseys are too expensive nowadays.
