"2023 NFL Regular Season Week 17: Start Em' Stidham 2..."

Dead Money Don't Make None

Well, well, well...I'll be damned (c)Lana Michele Moorer

2 years, 2 teams, 2 high-paid quarterbacks, 1 man...Jarrett Ryan Stidham

So...apparently, the Broncos stepped to Russ and his people after the win against the Chiefs and asked if he would (told him, if you don't...we will bench you for the rest of the season) push back his injury guarantee trigger date. Even the NFLPA got involved...no agreement was reached. Fast forward to losing to the high-powered Patriots offense and here we are.

As it stands, Russ only (BIG ONLY) has guaranteed money for 2024. He's going to make 39 million next season, and count some 88 million against the cap. That's a done deal. The Broncos are trying to avoid any MORE money. If he's on the team March 17th, 37 million for 2025 becomes fully guaranteed. LOL!! I was reading through this contract and my jaw was on the floor with the amounts, lengths, guarantees and cap hits involved. Crazy thing is, he has played well this season...but, for 35 year old QB making that kind of money, he'd damn near have to have an MVP season and take the Broncos to a SB to justify the contract....oh, AND two 1's, two 2's, Drew Locke and Noah Fant. You gotta think someone brings him in off the streets...but, does Russ want to fight it out in training camp to play? I kinda lean toward what Bart Scott was saying....Russ will take his 39 million, start Russ Inc. and be on Dancing With The Stars by next spring. We'll see...but, this ride is over.

On to the games, Gents

it seems like the most likely candidates would be LV, ATL, WASH.

LV? not sure AP (assuming hes the next HC) could vibe with Russ.

WASH? i can never figure out what they are doing.

ATL makes a lot of sense for their personal lives cuz of Ciara's ties there. except that puts Russ and Future in the same city, so......

..LMAO @ Denver and the bed they've made.

Tank for Tampa? Careful what you wish for. I don't think the Penalty Bowl favors Dallas.

Meanwhile, Tampa has their hands full @ home with New Orleans.

The shield is crazy for not flexing Dolphins @ Ravens to prime time.

In response to Reply # 0

this is the best one I've found:

2024 release: before March 17
2024 dead money: $85 million

The Broncos would have $85 million in 2024 dead money by releasing Wilson before exercising the option for his 2028 contract year.

Broncos will not have to pay Wilson's $37 million 2025 base salary, which is guaranteed for injury if he is on the team in mid-March (or cut for failing a physical). Wilson would be off Denver's books starting in 2025.

2024 release: Post-June 1 designation, with his 2028 option declined
2024 dead money: $53 million
2025 dead money: $32 million

The 2024 cap savings are more manageable by using a post-June 1 designation. Any bonus proration after 2024 would be a 2025 cap charge for Denver.

Denver would pick up $23.4 million in cap room since Wilson's 2025 cap number is $55.4 million. Wilson would be off Denver's books beginning in 2026.

...the part I don't quite understand, is why does it matter if he gets hurt (no one will trade for him) if they are going to have to cut him after March anyway? he will get that $37 million guaranteed for 2025 because how in the hell does Denver eat a $85 million cap hit in one year?

that I did not know is there is offset language...so if he plays for anyone next season, the Broncos get that money back. Meaning, he would have to make get that 39 mil salary back...so maybe they are banking on cutting him early and someone else bringing him in.

Wilson is motivated to sign the smallest contract he can, right? he can go to a team for the veteran's minimum and Denver will be paying him the difference, guaranteed -- win-win for him and his new team

it's just clear the Broncos had Sean Payton/Russ choice and they don't wanna be in the Russ business anymore.

they know they are gonna have to eat next year even if he plays elsewhere but they want it to end there.

Stiddy balled out against the 9ers in his first start last year. We still lost but he did good.

Wished the Raiders would have kept him as backup instead of bum ass Hoyer

AKA if Payton doesn't like Russ and he wants to move off of him as badly as it seems, DENVER SHOULD DO IT (if they want Payton as their coach long-term).

For Russ, being stuck with a coach who doesn't like him AND is willing to come at him directly on the sideline and kinda sorta sideways in the media repeatedly is a bad look FOR RUSS. So he needs to be out of that situation post-haste even if he doesn't play another serious down of NFL football after that.

We already have the bullshit narrative shows talking about 'tarnishing legacies' and all of that. RIDICULOUS! Like I didn't just see Matt Ryan play like dogshit for ~ half a decade and lots of people still just wanted to love him and be who they am long enough for him to get to the Colts for a year before he made it wildly clear that he needed to be all the way that the house. Haha. Big Ben and Eli too since we're here. You saw those dudes actin a fool out there. They were basically late-career executive suite dudes who didn't quit because they were making too much money. Don't start me on Rivers either. Just don't!

with Flacco’s resurgence. Jerome Ford is tough, but it would be nice to see a healthy Nick Chubb in that lineup.

They’re proving that defense is still important (Eagles - take note and shoutout to Gym Shorts!) in this league. They should definitely be in the mix for the AFC chip.

I hope yall lose in the most dramatic gut punching fashion and Watson ruins your cap next year..

because you guy are a fucking problem. All this talk about Cincinnati and you do this with Flacco? smh.. shit is scary.

I’m sickel the Steelers have a chance to go 5-1 in the AFCN and still miss the fucking playoffs.

People keep saying I’m ungrateful when it comes to Tomlin but look at the injuries you guys had and the coaching moves you made to win games once Chubb and Watson went down.

Ridiculous for Steeler fans to look at the “mistake by the lake” with envy.

congrats.. I’m hating so hard right now. lol

Just a lot of bad coaching decisions in this game on both sides.

McCarthy not running to kill clock.

Campbell not kicking a FG

Campbell not kicking the extra point to go to OT

They got bailed out on the offsides call.

The first two point play call was great but the player has to know to report as eligible.

He always was a good passer but never had a WR group that could take the top off a defense and catch the ball.

His best and most consistent receiver was always his TE Mark Andrews.

And as said above, Lamar got some dawgs now. OBJ is the specialist, he was only thrown to ONCE today. Zay Flowers, Likely, Agiulor...I love it.

Gus Edwards and Hill stunting.

this team would be balling with Jim Schwartz. Instead they are providing nothing.

And Brian Johnson can't put together a "setback" game plan (i.e. you get 1st and 20 because of a hold). Worse if it's crunch time.

Go Flacco.

If he fails, go Lamar.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Bears are like, pass it to us. They’re going to part ways with Fields and draft a QB. They shouldn’t. They should already have Harvin Marrison Jr. jerseys made.

Bears already passed on Stroud/Young/Richardson, and taking Harrison Jr. would be passing on Williams/Maye -- is Field so good that he is better than the top 5 quarterback prospects over the last two years?

he's only under contract for next year, so if he doesn't perform then you are back at square one without any options -- I don't feel good about that bet

Not sure what he has ever shown to justify passing on one of these two REALLY GOOD prospects. You could trade him for good picks and take a franchise QB at #1

in the NFL. Only a select few get that. Look, I don’t watch a lot of college football so I won’t pretend to know how good Caleb or Drake are. Just feel like for a team that seems to always be searching…you got a kid in your building already who has developed and gotten better right before your eyes. He took the criticism, was accountable when he put his foot in his mouth, then shut up and worked. He and DJ Moore have formed a connection. Why not build an actual team around him, with all the resources you will have? Fix the line, get some more weapons on offense. Swing for the fences? I get it. Great if it works. I don’t have a rooting interest in the Bears or anything. Just an outside observation.

again, his rookie deal is up after next season so you kind of have to decide now if he's the franchise QB that is going to cost $45 million a season, or you try and trade him for other assets

if you wait to "see how he does" next season, you don't have the top pick to fall back on and you cannot trade him for anything

again, there is no guarantee Williams or any of the other quarterbacks this draft are going to hit (like every year), but Chicago is in the rare position of having their choice of any college quarterback for the second straight season

so if Fields does not become a top ten quarterback by next season, you set back expectations 2 to 3 years anyway -- except this time you won't have the #1 pick back-to-back

it don't matter if they beat Tampa in 1st round.

everyone gotta get fired.

(Except Stoutland and Clay.)

Next season will be one where the Eagles are lucky to win 10 games (going up against AFC North for starters).

Kelce, Graham, Cox probably retired.

INVEST IN LINEBACKERS AND THE D-LINE. Find the closest thing to Jim Schwartz you can.

GET AN ACTUAL OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR.

Carroll has been hanging and making short-term decisions based on just squeaking into the playoffs, even though they haven't had a real contender in years (you know all this)

every year Seattle hangs onto Carroll, they risk another move like trading away picks and giving Jamal Adams a billion dollars

I don't see anything creative on offense with him. No talent, no splash plays.

I could see if they were hovering around .500 but they are fucking horrible on offense.

To the point where it feels like Bill totally ignored that side of the ball because he had Brady and a system. I mean, he tried to go without a legit OC last year. That shit was beyond nuts.
