1. "is this the year Tennessee makes a Final Four?"
In response to Reply # 0

in my opinion this is the best team since the Grant Williams-Admiral Schofield-Lamonte Turner squad of 2018-2019 that lost to Carsen Edwards and Purdue in OT

defense will be elite, they are going to lack size in the frontcourt but they will also have several players who can rotate to different spots and create mismatch lineups against teams who want to go big

I think people assume Olivier Nkamhoua (transfer to Michigan) will be a huge loss but he was never consistent at Tennessee; people may remember him burying Duke in the Sweet 16 but the other two games of the tournament he shot like 28%

Dalton Knecht is the big arrival via Northern Colorado, if he lives up to his offensive potential this team will have a go-to they were missing when JJJ was bricking fadeaway 15-footers and Vescovi loses his shot

Zakai Zeigler already back on the court after tearing his ACL only nine months ago

the real question is if Barnes can adjust his mindset so this team can get to where they need to offensively -- grinding 60-52 games is fine in conference play, but you need to develop ways to score in crucial situations so you can do so in the NCAA tournament

he has a bad tendency to bury players with offensive potential on the bench because of defensive mistakes, and that doesn't bite him in the regular season, but it does when he needs a bucket and four of the guys out there cannot create their own shot

For me, picking a Rick Barnes team to make the Final Four is a "I'd rather miss out and be wrong than bet on it and kick myself later when they lose due to the inevitable >35% shooting night" proposition. I've no doubt the team will be elite defensively-- might be the best in the country. And I'd pick them to win the SEC, in the same way that it's hard to pick against UVA-- when your team is that good defensively, your floor is going to be absurdly high.

It'll be interesting to see what Barnes does this year.

(And Nkahmhoua looked great in that first game with Michigan, fwiw. Might be just the sort of dude they needed since the last two years of the Hunter Dickinson era did *not* go well for them.)

wish him the best outside any games against Tennessee; Barnes stuck with him for a long time even when he was going through bad, bad spells so I know whatever consistency he finds at Michigan he was never going to achieve staying here

In response to Reply # 2

I don't know what it is, but nothing annoys me more than when coaches who get a ton of 4 star and up talent pretend their program is "blue collar."

Meanwhile, anyone who watched that JMU game saw an absolute lack of effort by any MSU player not named Tyson Walker. They got smushed on the boards while Izzo kept his 6'11 top recruit on the bench all game. And then Izzo promptly threw his seniors under the bus at the press conference after. All very gritty, blue collar stuff!

5. "Duke-Arizona is going to be a *real* chess match."

This Duke team should be tailor made to run... but Arizona absolutely wants to run. Duke played slow last year and weirdly played slow vs. Dartmouth to start the year-- maybe they'll try to grind the game down? That's certainly been an achilles heel for Arizona under Lloyd.

The Ballo vs. Filipowski matchup is also *very* intriguing. Not convinced Duke can stop Ballo down low, assuming Ballo wants to try to dominate offensively (not always the case for Ballo). Then again, Flip can stretch Ballo out of the paint with Duke's five-out offense. Does Arizona want to try to switch everything on the perimeter against this potent Duke offense? Will they be content to just let Flip shoot open 3s?

And then, of course, there's Caleb Love. Outside of the Final Four game against Duke, his last four games in a UNC uniform against Duke... have not been efficient, to say the least. Tommy Lloyd is, imo, a significant coaching upgrade from Hubert Davis, as Lloyd actually runs an offense. Perhaps that's just the thing Love needed to unlock his full potential. I also don't really know who Duke uses on who defensively in the backcourt. I'd put Proctor on Love, as that worked beautifully for Duke last year... but I don't know that I trust Roach to defend Boswell?

Duke also needs Mark Mitchell to be healthy. He missed the last game-- and we saw last year how much Duke misses Mitchell's defensive physicality and versatility when he's out. Without him, I'd lean Arizona. With him, I'd lean Duke-- but this game will shift quickly either way depending on which big man gets in foul trouble first and whether Duke can make its 3s.

Duke did not slow the game down.

Flip acquitted himself just fine with Ballo, but whenever Flip was off the floor, Duke got MASSACRED on the glass. In the first half, we were -14 on the boards. Ryan Young was unplayable, yet he's the first big off the bench. Baffling misstep by Scheyer.

Love had a really bad game offensively, but he made the heave at the end of the first half and made his FTs down the stretch when they needed them. Also played good defense. Should be a good fit for him there.

Mitchell did *not* look like himself, I thought, and the shot looked somehow even more wonky. That's definitely a development to track for Duke, because if teams sag off him defensively, it's... going to change a lot for Duke. He just needs to make, like, 33% from 3. But tonight, it looked roooough.

Ultimately, I think the non-Flip minutes of the first half were too much for Duke to come back from. We won the second half, but you can't go down 8 at the half to a team that will be in contention for a 1 seed.

Going -14 on the boards in the first half is, like, unforgivable, lol. Was heartened that we were +2 on the glass in the second half-- unsurprisingly, we caught up and had a chance to win the game as a result. (Not a coincidence that Duke didn't play Young at *all* during the run back into the game.)

Much better work from Duke tonight. Still some nitpicks, especially in regards to turnovers, but we prevented MSU from getting out in transition, we out rebounded them, and, outside of an electric couple minute stretch in the 2nd half, we mostly played good defense against Tyson Walker-- and once that stretch happened, Scheyer threw double teams at him and dared other guys to beat us, and that was that.

MSU settling for sooooo many jumpshots. Not exactly gritty, blue collar basketball!

not much flow at any point due to the 100 foul calls

Tennessee had one of their bad shooting nights, Knecht was deferring and had a few turnovers but he should have played more

I think they need to dial back Ziegler some, he is trying to do too much on offense

JJJ, Vescovi and Ziegler a combined 2-14 from three (Gainey was shooting Tennessee out of the game but at least he came back to make 3 in a row), and most of them were WIDE open looks...got to hit a few more of those to win

Loved how everyone rebounded, especially with Zach sitting so much.

I’m most Disappointed that we didn’t intentionally address outside shooting this off-season. Loyer was great, (was terrible against Zaga) but the only gap to a title run is 3pt shooting, we’re winning now still, but it we’ll take us down in March.

Marquette we’ll be really tough, I really like that squad. Shaka is on his VCU shit with better talent, whooped Kansas who he beat towards his FF, and he beat us earlier in that same run. Can’t wait, love how stacked our schedule is. Still have Alabama And Arizona to come. Can’t say we’re not testing ourselves. Baring injury, the B1G we’ll be easy enough

Also, Hunter Dickinson is a loser, Michigan didn’t win with him, And I’ll go out on a limb- Kansas ain’t winning it all this year, certainly won’t get an ROI They still think is acceptable on the 1m+ they’re spending on him

I really hope that he has a clause in his NIL that ensures he’s the highest paid player - the thought that Hunter Dickinson is possibly making more makes me laugh, but also pisses me off

March is all that matters for this program, but I can’t help it, I love this version Of Purdue bball. Let’s sleep walk to another conference title and hot we are fully ready for March.

But, Bama and Zona first, which will be great games too

ahead of Purdue and tied with Kansas after a half, then the offense goes Antarctic for the final 10 minutes of each game

have to run better offense and not just think these guys are going to three-point shoot their way back into a rhythm

too many missed layups, not enough fastbreak points (where is the fast break? for a team that forces a lot of turnovers the fastbreak was completely missing in Hawaii) and rebounding were all major issues

Barnes needs to really dial in a better offense and not be happy to get rock fight wins in SEC play, otherwise this team will not reach their potential

first half was an absolute disgrace for a team starting three fifth-year seniors.

* rebounding continues to be an issue -- I get they lack size, but the lack of effort boxing out by the guards and wings is inexcusable. too much ball watching and soft-as-shit attempts at securing the rebound.

* no offensive continuity -- team was bailed out by Knecht but the lazily swinging the ball around, overreliance on trying to get Aidoo involved, complete non-threat of Zakai, Meshack or Gainey hitting perimeter shots, and inability of anybody besides DK being able to win off the dribble results in a lot of shitty threes and fadeaway long jumpers.

* complete lack of transition game -- those missed jumpers turned into a bunch of easy fast break points for Carolina and Tennessee is not an elite defense when they get in a running match; conversely nobody besides Knecht wants to attack the fucking rim with numbers, at one point Meshack had an open lane and picked up his dribble 5 feet short to throw a YMCA level bricked bunny.

* the experienced guys are letting the team down -- Barnes may need to start playing different people. Vescovi looked horrific, never seen him give such shitty effort on both sides of the ball; his pump-fake, drive to nowhere, then kickout to a covered teammate with 1 second of the shot clock is beyond old. Zakai I think will get back into the flow on offense and at least he is playing defense still, but right now he's a black hole offensively. Meshack played like he didn't even want to be there. sloppy turnovers by all the main ball-handlers, lazy shit. JJJ did ball out though.

* Gainey is looking like mirage -- scarily reminding all Tennessee fans of Tyreke Key from last year, an older transfer who was going to be a combo guard and stretch the defense. well he certainly has shot it -- shot the Vols out of three straight big games. 7-for-28 from three since Hawaii, with a lot of great looks. I get that shooters go through slumps but his defense was a fucking embarrassment tonight, jumping all over the place, repeatedly scorched off the dribble, couldn't box out a piece of toilet paper and had some horrible fouls like shoving Barcot in the back. he is killing the team right now.

Knecht rolling his ankle might be a blessing, because Barnes will have to tear this team back down to the studs to build them back up. they need to get back to their identity and the leaders need to light some fires under thier own asses and everyone else's.

Came weirdly close to fighting back at the very end down something like 16 with 4 minutes left. It's almost as if... Duke should have been pressing more throughout the game. Novel concept!

I just vehemently disagree with what Jon's been doing with this roster. We should be running, we should be pressing, we should be getting transition looks, we should be speeding teams up and overwhelming them with bodies. We should *not* be trying to play half court offense, and we should *not* be playing this conservative-ass switch everything but can't really, don't fight for turnovers ass defense. We showed flashes of changing things up and mucking up the game tonight... but Duke doesn't have too many more big opportunities, because the ACC mostly stinks. Can't leave games like this on the table.

In response to Reply # 33

He certainly adjusted nicely last year in a way that made me confident... but the start to this season has once again been slow. Certainly hoping he adjusts again, but it's obviously frustrating watching a team returning 4 starters play with such low energy-- and I think Scheyer's faith in this team outperforming teams in the half court is misplaced. We just don't have the luxury of losing these big OOC games because the conference is so mediocre right now.

I realize that outcoaching guys like Lloyd and Musselman who are 15-20+ years older than you and are two of the best in the game is a tall ask... but you've gotta win, man. This isn't the 80s where Duke could allow K to suck for a few years while he gets his feet under him. You can't waste rosters with this much talent. And if you end up with something like a 3 or 4 seed end of the day, it makes going on a Final Four run statistically far less likely than if you're a 1 or a 2.

So yeah. Certainly a frustrating stretch between this and the football. But hey, it could be worse. We could be 4-3 with losses to Davidson and UAB.

is that because of the seed or the fact that 1/2s are statistically just better than 3/4s

>is that because of the seed or the fact that 1/2s are statistically just better than 3/4s

1s and 2s are definitely on average better than 3s and 4s, but it's not just the team itself, it's the path. Especially in the first round, where the difference between a 15/16 seed and a 13/14 seed is fairly substantial.

PROBABILITY OF ADVANCEMENT TO SECOND ROUND:
1 seed: 99.3%
2 seed: 93.2%
3 seed: 85.1%
4 seed: 79.1%

I'd imagine on average that the worst 1 seed and the best 2 seed every year aren't very different in terms of how good they are, so at that point, the path plays a pretty substantial role. It's why the fact that the selection committee more or less doesn't factor conference tournament results into their seeding is *baffling* to me, because the path you set a team on has such an impact on potential end result.

But also you're right that generally you'd expect the best teams to perform best. And I think, generally speaking, if you look at KenPom pre-tournament to see which teams look overseeded or underseeded in terms of their adjusted efficiency margin on the season? The overseeded ones do tend to drop earlier and the underseeded ones are more likely to outplay their expected win total. So it's a chicken and egg thing, for sure.

And fwiw, Scheyer didn't schedule this game-- it was part of the Challenge, though K also rarely got disadvantageous road games in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, so maybe Scheyer didn't try to sway the selection in these challenges in his favor like K almost certainly did, lol. Scheyer did schedule a true road game at Arizona next year, which'll be brutal. He's said publicly he wants more true road games OOC. There's certainly a very real chance that what happened to Duke last night was just our usual first-road-game terrible bullshit play-- it just so happened that it happened in November instead of January this time around, lol.

One of my favorite players as a kid, and an easy guy to root for.

Love that he’s not handcuffing himself to 100% zone. He’s playing mostly man, and mixing in some pressing and 2-3 zone when it makes sense.

Chance Westry’s injury is a killer to this team - he was going to be a major contributor on both ends. JJ Starling’s got the Markelle Fultz shoulder/jacked up shot situation which sucks because he’s a solid player otherwise. But until he fixes that, his lack of shooting really hurts.

Judah Mintz is tough, Chris Bell can really shoot it but does nothing else. Maliq Brown and Quadir Copeland are glue guy sophs.

Team is a year away, especially with Starling and Westry’s issues. They’d be the 2nd/3rd best players on this team if healthy and we’d be legit dangerous. As it stands, I hope we can beat all the bad ACC teams, most of the decent ones, and pull one big upset. Thats all
I ask. At least Boeheim’s slow footed ass kids and their slow ass AAU teammates aren’t loafing around out there anymore.

No inside scoring and little outside shooting isn’t a good recipe to beat a team that defends like they do.

Beat the shit out of Oregon in South Dakota.

8-3 start. JJ Starling has made 5 of his last 6 3’s. If he’s “fixed”, this team can be legit dangerous.

Defense, shot selection, and chemistry are 100 times better than they were a month ago.

If Chance Westry gets healthy and can find a role(NOT at Qadir Copeland’s expense!), this team could get really fun. Still a year away, but there’s a window to become a problem this year.

Seeing cement footed Boeheim and Girard up top in the zone - those years were just so brutal.

A team like Pitt would’ve beat us by 15 the last few years. Instead we came back from down 10 to win by 10, with 3 guys who came off the bench being the 3 leading scorers. Autry is doing a great job, team is improving a lot. Hopefully they can give Duke a run on the road on Tuesday.

Lows and highs. Guys who sucked against FSU played well against State.

JJ Starling continues to get better. 26 points tonight. We’re dangerous when he’s playing well. NCAAs are a long shot at this point but if he can continue this strong play and we can somehow win enough to get in, he makes us dangerous.

He might go crazy next year. He’s got the tools.

On the one hand, it's hilarious how bad they are. On the other, I read somewhere that if Louisville wasn't in the ACC, they'd be the third highest ranked conference in the country, but instead we're the sixth. I don't know if that's true or not, but it certainly *feels* right, lol.

It's been a tale as old as Suh's brother playing backup SG, be weirdly impressive leading into conference play and then get punked emphatically over and over.

This is not to say I thought 7-0 meant anything, and as little as I follow CBB outside of March I know anybody, especially this sort of program, can get got for 5 out 10 losses and still have hope.

But as somebody who still has plenty of faith in the Rhule regime, it's been fun playing up the "actually we're a volleyball school with a basketball future" jokes. And as somebody who equally found a lot of comedy in this year's football follies, I feel a little bad for people who saw a tourney bid in our hot start.

Obviously this Creighton team has its own demons to overcome and avenging last year's Husker loss was an important first step - with the added bonus that few Nebraska fans aren't at least secretly rooting for Creighton anyway - but I can't deny I woke up this morning imagining how interesting the next month might be if Nebraska had taken this game.

Then I realized we're entering league play Wednesday and realized it's probably for the best we get in rhythm now and don't leave a black mark on the Jays.

Lady Vols lost at home to Middle Tennessee State last night, their first loss to MTSU in program history (22 straight wins in the series).

HC Kellie Harper (former PG under Summitt) is in her fifth year and has a worse winning percentage than her much-criticized predecessor Holly Warlick (who had an impossible job, following Summitt). Tennessee has not made a Final Four in 16 years (the Candace Parker two-peat). they have not even made an Elite Eight in 8 years.

there is no light in the tunnel either, as Tennessee had zero commitments in the 2023 top 100 and one commitment in the 2024 top 100.

sad to see Tennessee women's basketball no longer be a marquee program in the sport. the next hire should get away from the Summitt legacy and try to find someone completely new.

not perfect, but Vols did what mature teams do and pulled away once the Wolfpack tied the game with 5 or so minutes left.

Zakai looked as good as he has since the ACL tear. played the whole game and was absolutely pestering on defense (four steals). JJJ was shooting well and is playing the best ball of his career. Mashack is the best on-ball defender in the SEC. Knecht had his worst game; teams are sagging and doubling him early in his drive so he will have to adjust. hate to bag on a single player when things are going well but Gainey literally had an open lane to the basket and threw the ball a foot to the right of the rectangle on his layup. did not know that was possible in major college basketball.

DJ Burns looked like he ate the version of himself that was at Tennessee. jeebus he was huge.

In response to Reply # 73

Went into one of the most hostile road environments in the sport and was basically one bucket away from winning. If ISU doesn't hit a fadeaway high-degree-of-difficulty 2, Houston has a very real shot of winning.

I *kinda* wanna wave my hand at the Purdue loss, because, like, if your opponent shoots 14-23 from 3, it doesn't matter who it is, you're almost certainly losing by double digits. But teams are starting to figure out the Edey thing a bit-- 4 of their 5, he scored under 20, and 3 of the last 5, he had single digit rebounds. (Still obviously the Player of the Year, but still.) Purdue certainly has some incredible wins, varied wins, away-from-home wins... but between Edey and the fact that Northwestern also shot 50% from them on high volume from 3, this feels exploitable in March. It's the UVA thing-- taking away 2s but letting teams shoot a lot of 3s against you feels like a recipe for losing games you otherwise shouldn't.

interested to see how they handle a Big 12 schedule

you can roll the ball out and rely on your defense to beat almost every AAC team, but they will have to be up for all the games now

78. "They have a *really* good record against Tier A teams the last 5 years."
In response to Reply # 77

Like, better than Kansas type good. Might be the best in the country over that span, honestly. And while going forward they will play, like, almost double the amount of Tier A games per season? I think Sampson's one of the best coaches in the game and I think, if anything, Houston has absurdly high motor and fight and cohesiveness every season. I'm not sure Houston is a Kansas or Baylor vs a Big 12 schedule annually... but I totally believe they could be in the mix to get that one other 2-3 seed that the Big 12 seems to add to Kansas and Baylor most years.

Especially since it's clear that... well, teams with a good choice can change their fortune quickly in the Big 12 with NIL on the table. Kansas State went from blah to a 3 seed right away with nothing but a coaching change and one key transfer. Iowa State was *dreadful*, a 2 win team-- then hit 11 seed and 6 seed back to back years with a new coach. I think opportunity generally exists within the Big 12 for a well-coached team that fights every game to generally do well. Like, Iowa State is basically just trying to do what Houston has done under Sampson, and they've done really well in returning to relative relevance.

So it's just a question of "can they remain Final Four contender good?" And I think they can. The beauty of the Big 12 is you can lose 6-7 games in conference and still get a 2-3 seed, whereas the second you hit your 4th loss in the AAC, you're relegated to, like, 8 seed and lower. Also, I just look back at their tournaments so far. They had the lead with under a minute left to Kentucky in 2019, easily could've made the Final Four there. 2021, they do make the Final Four, they just run into one of the best teams of the last fifteen years. 2022, they lose Marcus Sasser and Tramon Mark to injury and *still* make the Elite 8, where it was a 2 point game vs. Villanova with only a couple minutes left. 2023, they run into a buzzsaw matchup and face one of the best off-the-bounce shot creation teams I've seen in God knows how long with Miami-- and the only real way to beat Houston is to make tough shots off the bounce. So I think they'll be fine. Do I think they'll lose like 6-7 games? Sure, probably. But that could still be a 2 or 3 seed.

The really interesting one to me is BYU-- thought they competed really well at Baylor last night. I suspect they'll drop off more than Houston does... but Pope is a really good coach. That said, I'd put the Big 12's coaching depth against any conference in the country, so having a really good coach might not be enough end of the day.

In response to Reply # 78

we can talk about Houston's Q1 wins or their tournament history, but lots of teams can get up for a game if they have 2-3 gimmies between them

their defensive baseline is so high, which helps a lot, and I'm not saying Houston won't be competing for a Big 12 title

but it will be interesting to see them adjust this season -- because it is a major difference

... but a) his buyout is 20 million or something like this, and b) they came into this season with high hopes. I think the international prospects were just *way* less ready than he thought, and they were going to rely on a lot of productivity from them. Disaster season-- but I'd imagine they'll be back next year.

didn't like all the turnovers and sloppiness, but to give up 14 threes and still come back to win on the road -- big balls

Knecht put them on his back; 36 points on 12/20 shooting and largely responsible for the 21-4 run in the final six minutes

last year Barnes didn't really have a choice but ride out his core group through slumps, but with JJJ playing really badly the Vols finally made their run once he was subbed out the last 8 minutes

same thing when Barnes benched Vescovi for the entire second half of UNC

not many players in the country can drop 14 points in four minutes like he did, on his way to an easy 39

could go down as the most dangerous scorer at Tennessee since Allan Houston, even passing Lofton -- I'd say he's more lethal than Grant Williams was because he doesn't need to be given the ball in the post, he can bring it up himself and initiate his own offense

Vols own Florida in Knoxville (8 in a row)

dismantling of bama at home

Tennessee is 40-2 over the last three seasons at Thompson-Boling Arena, 53-5 over the last four

even though he wasn't efficient, Mark Sears is better than I remember last year

BIG to see Jordan Gainey come back and hit some threes; bigger than that though was his defense, rebounding and passing -- shooting comes and goes but his main issue was all the other unforced errors outside of that

work on those three things and the shots will fall

fortunately their defense still ranges from adequate to asschecks, so the variance factor is there

A tale of two halves.

Attitude, poise, swag. This game had everything.

LSU was physical early & often, leading by 5 @ halftime. Reese had a stellar game before fouling out in the 2nd half.

Coach Staley is coaching her ass off. Her halftime adjustments are simple, but effective.

SC looked pretty damn bad in that first half. LSU had them on the run.

But going into halftime, LSU was only up 5. They should have been up by about 15. I knew SC was gonna come back and bust LSU's ass.

And you're absolutely right. Dawn made all the right adjustments.

I think LSU is a very good squad but there's something missing. I don't know if it had to do with Reese sitting early this season or something else. When they got crushed by Colorado, they showed absolutely no fight or resistance. They just folded and let the whipping continue.

They should have had SC right where they wanted them. But they blew it last night.

..SC went into halftime down by 5, fighting to close the gap. When asked about Cardosa struggling in the 1st half and what they needed to do to win, she kept it simple:

She has to want it © Coach Staley

Cardosa struggled because she was a step slower and hesitant with the ball in the paint. Once she listened to Dawn, the momentum shifted, and Reese couldn't stay out of foul trouble. They used LSU's aggressiveness against them and didn't look back.

It’s kinda ridiculous guys that old are playing college basketball. Major advantage for them though - guys that are good players who still have eligibility that aren’t great pro prospects that can make money at UNC. Thats probably the best formula for winning in this current environment.

RJ Davis has really gotten good, he’s having a hell of a year.

I'm not going to sit here and act like Duke doesn't benefit from a friendly whistle, because they obviously do... but there were multiple fouls on Proctor's final drive, lol. If that was a Maryland player making that drive and a foul wasn't called, you'd be absolutely furious.

I know I'm drunk, but I also know if it was Maryland, you'd be beside yourself if it wasn't called.

https://x.com/SethDavisHoops/status/1751489909758574681?s=20

Even Seth Davis, who posts stupid-ass shit repeatedly, was like, "Yeah, this is obviously a foul." And this clip doesn't even show the most obvious part of the foul.

Like, end of the day, the defender made a ton of contact. I don't want to post screen caps but they're obvious. I think the foul should've been called before the shot, personally-- but that would've also resulted in 2 free throws. And I don't think all of it was on Proctor. It was a physical game... but, like, you can't let the dude get mugged on the dribble drive. And that's what it was.

And yes, the refs waited and called on the shot instead of before when it should've been called, so it meant less a second less time for Clemson... but considering the obvious foul, and considering the flagrant against Wendell Moore Jr with Clemson that went uncalled two years ago, I could give a single solitary fuck, lol. People don't forget.

I like basketball better when scorers try to avoid defenders to get a shot off.

“Driving to try to get fouled” is the new “help defender undercutting a guy trying to score and getting the charge call”(something they’re doing a better job of officiating, finally) for me.

Man, I didn’t even watch.

I saw:
1) a technical on Clemson for catching it out of the net and handing it to the Duke player inbounding.(bullshit)

2) Proctor falling on purpose and throwing up some shit.(bullshit)

3) Joe Girard trying to run after the refs and showing more effort half heartedly trying to escape the people holding him back than he ever showed trying to fight through a screen in 4 years at Cuse (not bullshit….LOL! So glad I don’t have to watch him play 38 minutes a game under his friend’s dad anymore).

He knows the game's over, storms the court, gets tossed. Takes the time on the way out to shake hands with Painter and congratulate the Purdue players while exiting. Waves his hands at the fans in a taunting manner before he goes. It was all over the place, it was unpredictable, it was magical. Need more "what the hell is happening?" in the sport, lol.

But before the game he openly said to the press he had 15 fouls to use… and said what his strategy was.

And the ref he went after Purdue is something like 0-30+ against the spread in games he’s reffed, so no love for him. But the level of disrespect he threw his way was way over the top. Like game suspension level. Worse than night throwing the chair; and pretty sure he got suspended for it.

Feels like almost a must win for conference the way badgers are playing… good thing I really don’t care about the conference title, I’ve seen like 10 of them since I’ve been a fan, just don’t mean much with the march success at this point.

I’d trade a Purdue loss for a Arsenal win over Liverpool that morning

Still got some things to work out, clearly-- especially on the effort front, as UNC got every single loose ball and outhustled Duke in general-- but also still think we have the pieces to win at home in the rematch. Time will tell.

Bad defense means losses in the regular season, but if you're sick off the bounce, all it takes is a bit of good fortune to make a really deep run. I kinda think they're more positioned to make a deep run this way than if Cal kept rolling out his antiquated two-bigs-no-3s offense-- though their seed will be worse this way, so who knows?

The excuses are out. Eventually the results have to happen on the court, and they haven't. Without results, you don't get to keep your job. They'll find an upgrade this summer.

I was counting on that being a nice resume win for Tennessee but they've dropped four in a row and look horrible

losing to Michigan and Rutgers in consecutive games is an awful look

their shooting splits today were: 32% FG / 23% 3P / 59% FT

epic bricks from every spot of the floor

they have a brutal end to the regular season and would be lucky to split their last four:

vs. Auburn
@ Alabama
@ South Carolina
vs. Kentucky

just a bad game overall against A&M tonight, although I'm hoping (perhaps against logic) that it makes Barnes look at his rotations more seriously. you knew you had to stop Wade Taylor IV but your best on-ball defender barely played the first half, and instead he you let A&M get Knecht in bad switches and attack him ruthlessly. meanwhile on offense, JJJ and Vescovi took turns passing up open shots out of Knecht double-teams and dribbling into the lane without shooting or drawing a foul.

Mashack should be taking more of JJJ's minutes; if JJJ has a lot of versatility on defense but Mashack is better on defense, plus attacks the basket better and I'll bet gets more offensive boards (JJJ has never had an EFG% of 50% in his career). Gainey has to shoot with confidence (looks like he has a hitch at the top of his jumper) or GTFO of the game. it takes a while to get into Barnes circle of trust but it also can take too long to sit guys when they don't have it.

and call timeout, as Buzz Williams did against Tennessee

Vols in-bound the ball, then he just runs to the center court circle waving his hands until the refs stopped the play

the fact the refs just shrugged and gave it to him is unbelievable if you didn't see it

Effort was not there - A&M just out-hustled TN all night, with the exception of ZZ. Just sat there watching the rebound count for A&M go up on the stat board all game.
Did Aidoo get benched halfway through the first half?
Santi has to pull the trigger on threes. Gave up way too many looks to pump-fake and dish for a lesser shot.

>Effort was not there - A&M just out-hustled TN all night,

yep, and that's where I question Barnes' rotations because he should have put in Mashack and Awaka *way* earlier -- those two will give effort if nothing else

>Did Aidoo get benched halfway through the first half?

he's a finesse big and yeah, it wasn't working for him

>Santi has to pull the trigger on threes. Gave up way too many
>looks to pump-fake and dish for a lesser shot.

love what the seniors have done for the program -- when you look back, this is going to be one of the most successful runs ever -- but the twitch I get from watching him do this six times a game might be permanent

Santi passing up a wide-open three, pump-faking, driving three feet closer then kicking out to a covered shooter with 2 seconds left on the shot clock is basically part of the offense at this point

And the world takes him for granted, god’s chosen son. Smh

For real, I’ve never fallen harder for a player, after being underwhelmed by him early and dismissing him based on stereotype perception. He’s so special for his size, his mobility and agility and flexibility for 7’4” is what makes him special. He’s not wemby; but he’s kinds of a unicorn in his own way.

And he’s such a cool dude, great interview, press conference guy too, funny!

Really hope for him they at least get a final 4. But so decorated already

It’s unfathomable how bad things got the last few years. Literally beat nobody good and went .500, smh the fuck?!!

I thought those bubble years where we’d knock off a Duke or Virginia in an upset were terrible at the time. Was spoiled for a long time. I think we’re on our way back, everybody who gets time is a sophomore, and got 2 good recruits coming. Portal a good center and keep all the guys that we want to come back, and we’ll be tough next year.

It's a *really* bad draft for PGs imo. I wouldn't be surprised if guys who feel they'll test well go pro-- and Mintz performed well at the combine last year IIRC. (I think Proctor's gonna go for this same reason, even though he and Mintz are probably in a similar boat when it comes to draft stock in a normal year.)

Probably depends how the season ends-- tourney obviously not in the cards this year, but a strong finish and an NIT run probably aren't out of the picture.

He hasn’t improved his 3 point shooting….or playmaking, really. He’s basically the same player and has had a lot of bad games - tries too hard to draw fouls rather than just making the shot, then jogs back bitching at the refs, or pretends to try for a steal that he’s never going to get and takes himself out of the play.

He was great last night and has had a handful of games like that, but I wouldn’t draft a guy who’s not a good outside shooter, not that good of a passer, with serious maturity and effort issues. I’m not even sure I want him on my college team some nights, lol.

... it's just such a rough class for guards in general, especially point guards, that I've no doubt guys on the fringe who'd normally return and collect another year of NIL are more likely to go this season than normal, I'd think. We'll see what happens.

Their freshman year when the team was solid, there were no fans allowed in the Dome because of COVID.

Soph year they witnessed the team’s first losing season in 50 years.

Junior year, the team went 17-15, got blown out by Colgate and beat nobody good.

This is the first really fun thing they’ve gotten to experience at a basketball game in their entire time on campus, I hope they enjoyed the hell out of that.

Old people applying their standards need to relax. These kids were in elem school when Syracuse was last a perennial high seed in the tourney where wins like this were normal.

The first major domino of the offseason just fell early. Interested to see who they pursue. Seems like stealing McDermott from Creighton is an option?

... given that last year was really Dusty May's only good season to date-- and Paris, while my pick for COY this year, only had one year at Chattanooga finishing top 3 in the SoCon, and South Carolina's SEC schedule this year is backloaded and they could still finish in the 8-seed range. I think they're awesome coaches with real upside... but both absolutely have real downside in a place as high-profile as OSU too. Picking a coach in his 40s with a small sample of high major success is how you ended up with the Holtmann Era in the first place.

McDermott's got a good ~8+ years of coaching left and has *Creighton* of all places annually in the top 4 of the Big East and hit the second weekend two of the last three years. Think he could immediately put OSU back in Big Ten title contention with NIL resources, given how successful he's been at bringing transfers to Creighton. He might not be "sexy" but he wins, and Creighton coaches like Eddie Sutton and Dana Altman have done well moving up the ladder in the past. I don't know... I think he's a very reasonable option.

I don't think Nate Oats is leaving Alabama-- he's worth a shot, but that buyout is sizable and he's built a perennial Final Four contender there-- and Jay Wright is a total pipe dream at this point (he seems content to be retired). And I lowkey think Dusty May's heading back to Indiana this offseason or next, so I'm skeptical he's the best option unless OSU gives him fuck you money with a colossal buyout.

To me, it feels like McDermott, Paris, or Sean Miller. And it comes down to philosophy. If you want the safer winners? McDermott and Miller are probably the picks. If you want the higher upside younger guy who's less proven? You offer Paris.

Some other names out there I've heard: I think Mick Cronin would *not* be good and his buyout is insane. I think Porter Moser is a *really* good coach, and he's been to a Final Four, but the Oklahoma tenure would give me pause (although their basketball NIL is undeniably worse than Ohio State's, I'd imagine). I'm... not convinced I'd rock with Anthony Grant due to the Alabama tenure, I suspect he may be a classic great mid-major/very middling high-major guy, but he's certainly been great at Dayton and deserves another shot somewhere.

Holtmann never achieved anything noteworthy at Butler to be given the Ohio State job , he lucked into the biggest payday of his life , and I’d be shocked if he’s ever coaching at another major school again . He’s better off suited for D2 or Juco. The man can’t do anything well, offense , defense , drawing up plays etc .

Only reason he was able to land some decent recruits is bc of the logo on the jersey

Just a dream dramatically different than in Feb… not completely of the rails life got we’re finished last year, but man.

Loyer can’t be trusted, its on Painter too. We know what he is, not letting Colvin and Heide get minutes to limit Fletch time is criminal.

Praying this new AD doesn’t screw up this hire , and goes w someone young and innovative

Court storming fully warranted

Reminds me of Matt Sylvester and Co knocking off undefeated Illinois in Thad’s first year
