"June Futbol: He who Poch’es, shall win? "

Well, it’s official, Poch is the coach of my beloved Chelsea, but
will he lead us to victory?

Based on his history, the answer is an emphatic NO.

I never thought highly of him and still don’t, but he is the coach
now, so it is what is.

Other news, I think the whole world is rooting against Mancity.
I always root for former players, so I hope Lukaku bags one….

Just a somber ending for one of the greatest number 10s to
play the game. He was never the same after breaking his ankle
against PSG. He had finally put together at Real and was killing PSG,
and then that tackle cracked his ankle….totally took away his ability to
pivot and cut

More than likely he is going to retire.

My favorite player of all time.

First, women steal game from wolfsburg who looked dominant at first. NOPE! Barca women take the championship league crown!

Then, in a semifinal for promotion, barca b led by Rafa Marquez storm behind Luismi Cruz's 2 goals (both golazos) and an assist to make the finals by beating la fabrica's best. Beautiful day.

And more and more noise Leo's coming back once la liga approves viability plan officially in next week.

I imagine Barca could uprise again.

We shall see

But Messi’s legacy took a hit, because things didn’t go well at PSG …but
Ronaldo’s legacy took a hit too when he was at Manchester..won’t
affect either in the grand scheme of things

Ronaldo did the smart thing and went for his final big pay day. ..then ride
off into the sunset.

I’m not sure Messi returning to Barca would be a positive thing, since his skills
have diminished, and Barca has young talent looking to excel

That UWCL game was pretty crazy. I was kinda rooting for Wolfsburg, they hadn't won it in so long and had so many disappointing finals at the hands of OL. Started so well too, and then a complete opposite start to the 2nd half. I hope they keep performing at the level they are despite bigger clubs investing in the women's game. Their best players tend to get bought up by other clubs but that hasn't kept them down yet.

We need OL and Barca to meet for a home and away leg stage at some point.

but he has a home in miami and sounds like he just had zero faith barca would get the ok to actually register him and he wasn't going to wait again after the fiasco two summers ago. Can't blame him, he's won everything already.

and while i was 100% in support of bringing him back and am VERY sad it's not going to work out, that was almost all emotional and any team is better w/ messi than without. but he was absolutely a luxury signing.

instead, keeping ansu fati, signing a Busi replacement (Zubimendi is xavi's fav. I could see Ruben Neves maaaaaybe in a double pivot, but would rather just try nico out for that), Gundogan (and sell Kessie), a RB (Cancelo on loan or find the money for Foyth) and signing Vitor Roque now can be the priorities that make more long term sense than the emotional high that re-signing messi would have brought.

bottomline, a team w/a starting XI of MAtS, balde, christensen, araujo, kounde, fdj, pedri, gavi, lewa, dembele, raphinha is competitive already. could definitely get even better, but don't fuck that up.

MLS is too god damn easy, and even for an out of prime elite player that
doesn’t try carry over for long

See Zlatan…had MLS at his feet and brought glory…still got the hell out of there.

American fans will eat it up of course, which is all that matters I guess

Need Deez Beaz to give him a call and close this MF asap

him learning the craft from Luuk de Jong is a best possible situation for me on 2 fronts. Richy Ledezma will be headed back after the MLS season too, and should have opportunities with the midfield churn coming this summer.

in Saudi Arabia.

Kante not getting re-signed by Chelsea was already expected, but
him going to Saudi Arabia is very strange, since he is known as an
extremely frugal person. He drives a used mini cooper because he doesn’t
see the need to spend lavishly on cars, and just never comes off as a person
about the money or having a high end lifestyle.

it's coming sooner than you think. first Lukaku dating Meg and now Messi coming to Miami. only thing left is for the money to start flowing. once salaries for players start getting up there like NBA, NFL and MLB players, it's a wrap. once the money is equal or better than Europe...

for the record, i'm being a bit facetious but only a little bit. the Premier League will always be what it is as will the top UEFA clubs. i do predict though that it will go back to mostly being European players over there. South American, African and every other talent will start flowing to the States to follow the money.

things will change here though sooner rather than later and i'm just curious to know if ya'll wanna start picking MLS clubs now or wait to see who the front runners are? at least you guys won't have to keep getting up so early on Saturday mornings. just make sure you start saying soccer and not football, this is America.

i look forward to how mad this will make all of you.

As long as the league controls the salaries and designates where
players go based on some bullshit allocation list, MLS will be shite.

things changed when Beckham came here in 2007. literally changed he rules for him. he was famous and married to a Spice Girl but he wasn't ever "GOAT who just won a World Cup" good though.

teams are already making money off of Messi coming to visit months from now and he hasn't even stepped foot in the country yet. Charlotte already opened up the upper section for a game in October. tickets selling for $4000 right now (the game the week before against Toronto highest ticket is $260). and you just know players will follow Messi over here to join in on the fun. flamingoes sound awesome fam!!!

go look up the reaction when Pele came to play here back in the day. it's going to be more like that but possibly bigger. should be very interesting.

>As long as the league controls the salaries and designates
>where
>players go based on some bullshit allocation list, MLS will be
>shite.

the allocation list is mostly for USMNT players and a couple other instances, but it's ok, we'll get you up to speed on the rules and whatnot. you'll be an MLS expert in no time. i got you fam.

SALIBA!!!

Loving this offseason already;. Saliba extending is bigger than anything for me personally (after Gabi and Saka locked up earlier too) the night and day difference in performance after he went down was crazy. Just praying to the gods this back think doesn't linger

The deets on his greatness and impact:

Arsenal Premier League win percentage:
With Saliba 78%
Without Saliba 46%

Goals conceded per game:
With Saliba 0.9
Without Saliba 1.6

Shots conceded per game:
With Saliba 8.3
Without Saliba 10.7

I'll stay quiet on the incomings until they happen, but tough not to get a little hyped for that as well

Chelsea still runs London and it even close

Inter has not won Europe since Jose was coaching them!

MU? 2008

Arsenal? Ain’t even worth mentioning… and they choked!

We had a squad of Werner, Havertz and Kepa conquer all the top European titles
in one year! … Let that marinate! Talk about coaching players up! That squad ain’t
even close to being one of Chelsea’s best squads of all time…and they won everything.
We had no business winning anything, but we did

Yeah, will be ass for a few years while we rebuild because our
owner was forced out…and during that time none of those teams s
will win anything significant.

like, i'm not trying to be flippant, i'm serious.

they might like him, but they should be more concerned with having a manager that is tactically adept and knows how to properly make adjustments. he is proven to be lacking in those areas.

the players are gonna play no matter what, they should be looking for someone more skilled than Berhalter to lead.

Who would you think is a better option out of what they had? I don’t follow the ins and outs too tough. Not sure what other potential options would be.

I guess I mostly just thought it was bullshit it was how Gio’s parents tried to get all up in the video and shit.

because, i feel like picking these guys can be a real crapshoot, especially since managing a national program is WAY different than managing a club where you're there everyday and you see the players everyday.

that being said, as BKWhat said in reply 80, they coulda started w/ the guy who was coaching last night. i say that because AT LEAST he did the most simple thing a coach could do which is play his best players. Berhalter can't even do that half the time.

Then, there's Gio Reyna. He started last night and played well. Obviously there's drama there w/ he and Berhalter, or there was. I won't be shocked if Berhalter puts him on the bench.

The whole U.S. program is always snakebitten by politics, and our best talent often doesn't play (and sometimes isn't even selected). I hate it here, lol.

Read BKwhats post too and definitely agree that the best players need to be on the field, including Gio. Hopefully that situation will be water under the bridge, he is one of our best players. And I didn’t see anything but highlights of last nights match because it was late af and on paramount which I don’t have. Looked like pulisic was playing like a man on a mission.

Really sucks to not have Mckennie and Dest for the final vs Canada.

He got everything wrong to a truly impressive extent. Wouldn't wish his tenure, nor the mess he left us with after leaving, on anyone.

Hopefully it was an extreme aberration and/or he learned some valuable lessons.

But it would be on the tv until we figured out what we were doing for the day. Up earlyish most weekend mornings because of the kids, no matter what may have happened the night before haha. It was a great way to start the day.

Can’t do baseball though. Not until close to the end. I don’t enjoy watching it that much. I just miss footy. Haha

Hopefully Gregg is learning something watching how this team is playing. Was this interim guy not in the mix to get the job? Because he’s definitely getting it done. Hats off to him.

I hate that this shit been on paramount though. I’ll have to catch the highlights in the morning. Smh

not sure. i feel like he wasn't but could be wrong.

also, i wanna clarify a previous statement: not only are his starting XI trash, his selection period is trash.

like, it shouldn't be mystery about who should be on the team, and who should start.

this interim guy has "figured out" the obvious, so i hope Berhalter can at least do that.

at best i'd hope he makes BJ Callahan (the interim manager who i had to look up) an assistant?

i mean, their motivations were selfish, sure and they went about it horribly.

that being said, Gio should be starting, bar none.

also, as Seb Salazar and Hercules Gomez pointed out so very clearly in the pregame last night, the USSF has chosen to keep a guy who DV'd his wife. not allegations, he did that shit. his tenure ended. he didn't need to come back. i'm not saying people can't have redemption from their mistakes. but uh, that doesn't mean that person has to be the coach of the USMNT. that's before you get to the actual coaching accumen.

and me personally? NO MLS players should be on the squad if they aren't in the group of the best 20 some odd players (however many they pick) the USA has to offer (barring resting guys or playing in some bum ass tournament where everyone sends their B or C teams). i mean, look at any country's league. for instance, take Brazil. there's Brazilians who are playing there. who makes the Brazil national team? the best Brazilians playing around the world. why should the USA be different. just dumb.

that was completely irrelevant. Should Gio have been starting? Probably yes, though it sounds like he was fucking off during the biggest event on earth. I can see how a coach would feel in that circumstance, though I do not disagree that the best players on the team should be starting and playing. No argument there. You’ve definitely informed me and made me side eye Gregg more now. Hope he gets it right.

My comment about mls players being on the squad is exactly what you’re saying, only if they’re the best players available. The pay for spots shit is wack af. My point was, if we don’t have the 20 playing elsewhere we at LEAST need mls level players on the squad.

USMNT hardly even fields that many MLS players in games lately unless it's a friendly. did you just say that there's Brazilian playing in Brazil? are you trying to say that they don't pick guys from their home league to play for the national team, because they totally do. pretty ridiculous thing to say. it's super rare that a national team doesn't have at least a couple guys from the home league make the squad. Canada is one of those rare instances because their league is super young and not that developed yet. unless you count a couple Toronto FC guys. Canada had more MLS players on their roster than USA did.

https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/brazil-world-cup-2022-squad-players-qatar-line-up

that's last years WC squad. Brazil had 3 guys playing locally, and one was the 3rd keeper, so sorry, i'm not counting him.

the other two made 3 sub appearances in 2022.

please don't tell me about how Brazil values guys playing locally. i'm not saying they never have, but their talent lies around the globe, just like the United States (and just about every other country for that matter). a country's best players generally play for the best clubs they can get to and those aren't usually local, but you know this, you're just trying to stick up for the MLS.

here's the thing: i'm not an MLS hater. i like the MLS. before Apple's bitchass took over i used to watch the Sounders (my team) and other MLS matches religiously. that has shit all to do with where the talent lies.

you can try to say what counts and doesn't count all you want, i'm just saying it's not out of the ordinary for nations to include players from their home league making the roster. literally everyone does it. this ain't the days where most of the guys on the USMNT roster are from MLS. saying there should be ZERO spots for MLS players is wild though. i don't think there's even that many USMNT players playing outside of MLS (at that level) that they could even do that if they wanted to.

they only had 3 for this Nations League.

https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/usa-roster-for-concacaf-nations-league-title-defense-24-players-called-in

if the best players play elsewhere, then to hell with the MLS. and the best players do play elsewhere for the most part.

if an MLS guy is the best choice? sure. but they definitely shouldn't be going "well, we gotta get a few MLS guys in here" when it comes to selection.

i think that's totally made up. so if that's what you're going on about then i think you can rest easy. if you're saying that guys can't play for the the national team just because they're MLS players then i will always disagree with that. i do agree that they should not include MLS players just because of some sort of requirement.

Chelsea had no idea what to do with him

he's a goal scoring attacking midfielder who should have been playing behind Lukaku and Werner, but also could have been played next to Werner in front of Ziyech (another player they had no odea what to do with) for rotational purposes

at Arsenal he can play between Odegaard in midfield and Saka/Martinelli cutting in

$65M is a lot of money, but he's super talented and very young still

this is a trifecta win for him, the USMNT, and PSV

hes going to be playing do or die CL qualifying matches in like 6 weeks, and if i had to pick someone to teach a young American the nuances of strikerdom im not sure theres anyone better than Luuk de Jong. no athleticism to speak of whatsoever other than his touch and his timing, and he turned that into 150+ goals.

and now PSV finally gets its change of pace ST. when Luuk was out, things went VERY poorly. maybe im just chugging kool aid, but 12 goals for wack ass Groningen is just as instructive as 20 for PSV/Ajax/Feyenoord imo.

if he helps get PSV into the Champions League, its gonna be hard not to get my hopes up

i actually dont think he wants to leave, and i dont really understand the release clause.

the main beat guy for the Eindhoven newspaper seems to think an extension is the most common outcome, and seems to say its more like a personal clause in his club contract rather than a buy-back option in the purchase agreement. if he extends, it will be for a while, and will definitely include a traditional release clause.

but not speaking Dutch or subscribing to the paper, its hard for me to detect much nuance. my prediction is he stays.

Sangare is gonna be on the move, which is a bummer. Arsenal could get a cheap beast there for €37M, but it sounds like Milan is getting involved with Tonali gone.

direct Juan Cuadrado replacement and a massive expansion of his role

all the winger things with width and danger, and all the fullback things with Kvara and Leao bearing down on him

im excited by this, and unlike Lille's fullback role, he will still be doing all the things he's going to be doing for the USMNT. he isnt really a "cut in and shoot" kind of player anyways, AND with his defensive game Dest can be free to overlap to his heart's content.

But would you rather have Ashley Young or Wayne Rooney from the similar period of England teams? That's the distance between Beasley and Dempsey/Donovan. And again, I liked DMB as a player. But Reyna's ambitions should be to be a much, much better player than him if the USMNT is to improve. And I don't think he'll get there.

This crop of players is a second-tier international side.

Yes, Berhalter’s time is up. But we don’t have a center forward who can hit the broad side of the Grand Fucking Canyon. Pepi looked like he was playing with clown shoes on.
