"2023 NBA Finals: Miami Heat vs Denver Nuggets"

We all know the tale of the tape.

Denver's riding high (1), after sweeping my beloved Lakers(7) in the WCF to make their NBA Finals debut. Miami's been playing the underdog all year. Making the playoffs as an 8th seed, then storming through the east, toppling Milwaukee(1), New York(5), & Boston(2) en route to their 2nd NBA Finals appearance in 3 yrs.

Denver:

Murray
Caldwell-Pope
Porter Jr.
Gordon
Jokic

(Malone)

Miami:

Vincent
Struss
Butler
Martin
Adebayo

(Spoelstra)

Enough talk. Let's get to it.

I thought there was a 0% chance the Giants would beat the undefeated Pats. In my own fandom, I thought there was no way we’d beat the Astros in 2019 for the World Series.

But weird things can happen when the stakes are this high! My only hope is there’s no blowouts.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

one game will be such a blowout, they'll only actually need a half's worth of minutes to have won it.

Malone gave him ample opportunity to break into the rotation after the signing and he stunk it up pretty bad. Which sucks, really seemed like a hand-in-glove fit.

Denver hasnt' prevented Miami from getting good shots. neither team playing good defense in fact.

game is basically Denver's role players showing up and Miami's not.

but obviously an easy matchup to exploit.

Miami shooting 37% is the difference, because Denver not playing good defense at all.

Even by Volume, Denver is so much bigger.

Caleb is listed at 6’5 ..Murray at 6’4

But when Martin was guarding him he just look so small next to him…
Jamal has more mass or volume and was just backing him down.

Miami looks like a pee-wee squad out there

..Props to Jimmy & the Heat for making the finals again, but this team appears to be too much.

Denver's making this look easy. Jokic on his way to another triple double, Murray's getting great looks from everywhere.

Perhaps things will be different in Miami, but I doubt it.

they took almost 20 more shots than Denver.

and most of their shots, not just the 20 extra, were good looks. if they they hadn't shot under 40%, this is a Nuggets L.

assisted on 26 of 39 baskets and matched Denver in rebounding.

and that's with 3 starters essentially being no shows.

opp 3pt% is largely down to randomness

but if you let a team *attempt* 40 3's...thats bad

letting Miami's shooters attempt 40 3's is really bad

limiting attempts is the only successful 3pt defense

Miami had proven 3 point shooters bricking practice shots.

Lakers had 38 year old Bron bricking deep 3 threes and human roller coaster DLo just bricking, which is normal for that guy.

i understand what you're TRYING to say, but nah.

now, i'm not saying that if Miami shoots better they are gonna win the series guaranteed or anything, but they're gonna be in it a lot more than they were in Game 1 (duh).

i'm always willing to be proven wrong, but if all other things being the same in Game 1, had Miami shot the ball up to their usual standard, they'd have won the game IMO, even with Jimmy pulling a disappearing act.

now, shooting comes and goes so if they stay cold it's a for sure wrap but if they can do what they did in Game 1 as far as limiting Denver (which they did do in a few ways) and warm up to their usual selves?

we might have a series.

but of course there'll be other adjustments and whatnot, so...we'll see what happens, lol.

i just hate that it's two days between games. already feels like the playoffs are crazy long.

and miami's only real path to success

at that volume every game, numbers will revert to the mean at some point. and, they will probably have a game where they hit 20 or more.

imo Denver should be running them off the line like they are all 50% shooters. with that height advantage, they are built to contest 2s with help.

they should continue to play Duncan straight up given that he has 27-28 foot range and can use his size in the lane better than the rest of Miami's shooters, but everyone else should have defenders playing extremely tight with very aggressive closeouts.

they are all long, defenders that can cover ground and if not flat out block the shot (blocking a three is rare), definitely bother the shot or keep them from getting it off altogether.

the summary was that the only thing a defense can really control is how many shots they allow

John Beilein's Michigan teams made that their absolute priority, and turned into defenses that were much greater than the sum of their parts

if Denver does a better job of limiting the attempts, its all just a matter of time

when he was coaching OKC. I swear those teams led the UNIVERSE in giving up butt naked, wide open 3s. This was with Russ, KD, prime Roberson, Jermai fucking Grant...didn't matter. Hell, even when PG came. Shots where the defended was so open, he got confused as to how he was so open. Hated that shit.

For the rest of his career , clinging to that “ here man , stop crying already” MVP

Maybe one day doctors will find a cure for the mysterious ailment that prevents him from playing in Denver

Him vs. Joker is so over it's not even worth entertaining as a serious convo anymore. I mean, I'll talk my shit where it's appropriate, but it's just sad (especially considering how many haterzzzzzz hopped on his dick this year).

That said, if JoJo is able to:

- Finally get out of the conference semi-finals (which means not blowing a 3-2 advantage and absolutely shitting the bed in game 7)
- Actually get out of the conference finals
- Win ANOTHER MVP
- Win a ring
- Actually suit up for a game in Denver

Then, sure, let's start having this conversation again in a serious way. But man, he sure did kill Jokic in a meaningless regular season game.

in the sense that Jokic has stated more than once that he didn't care about winning the regular season MVP award.

To be clear, I am a Knicks fan, so I personally have no vested interest in either Jokic or Embiid winning the MVP award this year.

I suppose an argument could be made that the MVP award should be based strictly on meritocracy and/or raw numbers and not partially based on who campaigned harder for it, but I think it's only fair to mention that Jokic made the job somewhat easier for media members and sports writers to choose between him and Embiid by downplaying the award on multiple occasions. Seeing as how narrative is part of the deciding factor on how voters choose the winner, it's only fair to mention Jokic downplaying the award.

comfortable putting him on the same level as Larry Bird as the last consecutive 3 time MVP, there were years when they didn't give it to Jordan and LeBron just because they wanted to see someone else get it

Apparently he made it on TV first but I don't bother with that.

The Lakers played one of the better four game sweeps in recent memory, and despite Game 1 looking pretty hemmed up for about 30 minutes the Heat shot just 2 free throws and uncharacteristically bad in general.

Now, little old me might say MPJ (though on defense rather than offense) and Gordon did exactly what I think makes this series uniquely grotesque for the Heat, and Butler looked more gassed than an '03 Hummer in the Rockies, but I appreciated his overall point which was:

The Heat aren't gonna play bad basketball in this series, or be unprepared. The Nuggets are probably just gonna be decisively better, whatever it takes to be that. It'll be interesting to see what the math looks like with Herro, but barring an unforgiving rim or whistle good Nuggets basketball seems equal to perfect Heat basketball.

dude hasn't played in how long?

he's probably rushing back a little bit as well.

also, he's not a very good defender iirc, so even if he is helping on offense, how does it go on the other end?

i WANT it to be something for the the Heat, but i'm reserved in my optimism.

on top of that, there's a question of how it affects the chemistry the guys who are playing have built over this run.

Unless he comes back and is the next coming of pre-injury Klay Thompson in terms of his offensive production, I can't see Spolestra opting to start Herro given how much chemistry the current wing players have gained this playoff run.

And that's ignoring Herro having to get his conditioning and wind back to play heavy minutes. No way would Spolestra gamble a championship by starting a guy that missed nearly two months of competitive basketball.

but I do wonder how much the two days of rest between these Finals games will help them out. Their road during this playoff stretch has been ragged in terms of the amount of games they've had to play with somewhat a limited about to rest.

Like I said before, I don't want them to win and the Nuggets overall siz advantage might prove to be too much for the Heat, but I wonder how much those two days of rest will help.

for Games 2 and 3 during last night's broadcast. Game 2 being on Sunday and Game 3 being on Wednesday is plenty of rest for both teams. That should help the Heat somewhat.

To what extent in terms of beating the Nuggets, I have no clue.

And I am a Knicks fan, so I definitely don't want the Heat to win, but the amount of rest between games should be considered.

The Nuggets are gonna be huddled up, in the center of the court, holding the Obrien and people are going to be trying to figure out ways they can still lose the series. Yall!! They're going to win (barring injury, obviously). They're the best....arouuuuund, lol. They been the best. It's okay. I don't think for one second Miami is gonna quit, but it doesn't matter. SO many things they (Denver) can still do. Yes...ALLOWING 40 3s to be taken is not a great idea. They can deny better. Miami can try to hit more shots. What's their other move? Hell, Denver hasn't even leaned on simply dumping the ball into Jokic and making Bam foul him. I was frothing at the mouth for them to go ahead and get that 4th foul on him. He simply can't do anything to stop him from operating down low. Oh, you figured out the Gordon thing and wanna put Jimmy on him? Fine...cook Jimmy's legs trying to bump and grind with Gordon all evening. Jimmy is the undisputed king of the and 1...he didn't go to the line, last night. He's not muscling anyone on that team. Miami basically has to become 2018 Villanova to hang in these games.

MIA ranked 27th offensively in the regular season and 23rd in 3 pt percentage. People acting like Miami isn't going to continue to shoot poorly didn't watch Miami during the regular season. They have been lights out since their 2nd play in game. This is just regression to the mean. Also love how quickl Denver adjusted to the zone by iso'ing Jokic in the middle instead of trying to rung the PnR. Denver can literally get any shot they want almost. May go 5, but probably a sweep.

some of Miami's players were down vs their career averages this year

regression to the mean would see Duncan Robinson shooting like 42% from 3 if youre talking about his real mean, and not just this past season. in fact, ive been watching Dunc play regularly since 2016 and ive NEVER seen him shoot as poorly as he did this year. if regression to the mean is coming, its going to be 20pt games, not 1-7.

strus was career .392 coming into the season and he shot .350 this year

obviously with their volume, down years drag everyone else down with them. i dont think its something Denver should count on.

you still think they should let them shoot, so what does it matter if they are missing easy closeouts?

Thats already more effort than you deem necessary

195. "I think the best way for Denver to defend"
In response to Reply # 191

is to make sure they keep Bam, Jimmy and Gabe out of the paint and close out as best they can with their length. If MIA is gonna shoot 48% from 3 and win games at 108 on attempting 35 3s, (45% of their shots) so be it. I don't think they'll do that. If they let Bam and an aggressive Jimmy and Vincent get inside and cause potential foul trouble for Jokic that is a better way for Miami to win IMHO. So yes, if you are going to pick your poison against MIA and give up shots I would rather they b 3s.

In response to Reply # 0

because everything rotates around a center who can
excel at every aspect of offense. You double, he facilitates with
great accuracy. You single, and he kills you inside/out.

You’re going to have to score and put up at least 110, and look to get
key stops in the closing minutes. Also the Heat must attack Jokic, force him
to play defense. That will either get him in foul trouble or slow him done.

Also attack Murray..Jokic and Murray are not great defenders at all.
Porter used to be a very weak defender, but he has tremendously improved.

Also, I know Jokic and Murray get the most attention, but Porter stats kills you as
well..Those 15/10, 18/10 games with the potential to drop 30 does damage across
the board. He had 14/13 the other night with 2 blocks, and got that while shooting
a weak 2/11 from 3. He is game is scary to me…cause dude can explode at any point
in the game. When that shit happens, it’s a complete wrap.

Strus 4-7 from three, Denver made some really bad defensive mistakes…but, Christian Braun has as many points as Jimmy Butler and Denver has weathered the storm and taken the lead.

Maybe in this context when there is a huge underdog, but folks use it anytime a road team wins a game lol.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Great win for Miami but a lot went right for them and a lot went really wrong for us and they damn near choked it all away at the end.

It's a series now, for sure, but Miami hitting ~50% from 3, us playing pretty bad for large stretches of the game, and the game still going right down to the last play kind of says all you need to know about where the power lies here. But the Nuggets still need to actually go beat Miami, for sure. Hopefully this game is the only reminder they need.

they shot 13-39 from 13 in game one, and a good handful of those bricks in game one were better looks than they got this game.

the formula for Jokic has always been play him straight up, let him go off and contain everyone else a la how the Warriors play him with Draymond.

i forget who it was that pointed it out, but they were saying that guys like KCP, MPJ, etc...when you deny them the ball and they don't get to touch it? when they do get it they aren't "warm" or in rhythm or whatever so when they do shoot it, they're not as in tune.

i'm no expert but it feels like from all the games i've ever seen there's a lot of truth in that.

i'm not saying it doesn't matter. it does. he's an OBVIOUS upgrade from whoever was playing in his spot in those game.

but, here's the thing, that doesn't change how the Warriors deal with Jokic. the point is it's important to not let the Nuggets role players get hot and you do that by making Jokic the scorer not the facilitator.

also, since we're talking about aberration seasons, you could talk about how they only beat the Nuggets one time this season in this weirdo ass season the Dubs had.

also, the Nuggets improved their roster over the last two seasons outside of Murray to the point they had the better roster top to bottom, and here we are where, SURPRISE, they won 3 outta the 4 games this year.

lastly, yes, fuck Jokic, SUPER FUCK Mike Malone, and fuck Denver (and SUPER FUCK Russell Wilson while we're here).

In response to Reply # 0

there needs to be more talk about the nuggets possibly regressing to the mean. particularly on the defensive end.

they gave up 16 open 3s in game 1. miami just didnt knock them down.

game 2 they obviously knocked them down.

and bam is pretty much getting whatever he wants against the nuggets. one of the more easily intimidated/discouraged all star players in the league and he has zero fear or tentativeness in this series (so far lol).

michael porter jr is starting to look like the old version of himself again (no d and questionable shot selection). and aaron gordon looks like his impact on offense can be limited a bit if he cant bully a smaller defender.

game 2 was how the nuggets really looked for like the last 20% of the season. and mike malone was yelling about effort back then the same way he is now.

i mean...theres a reason why a lot of people thought the nuggets could get knocked off as the #1 seed. its only 1 game but it was a reminder that there are still some questions about who they really are.

what's been impressive, ESPECIALLY last night, was his willingness to bang with the Jokic.

like, Jokic gonna get you. he's gonna get his little flip shots off and his little hooks, but you GOTTA bang with him even if he gets you.

basically, the Heat out-toughed Denver last night on top of everything else and Bam led the way in that department.

someone pointed out that Bam is showing a toughness this series so far that AD lacked, despite AD being a better player, and i can't unsee it (yes this is a low key AD hate reply).

these Miami games don’t take 4 hours like Laker games where dudes lay on the ground for 5 minutes trying to rest after each foul.

and for some reason AD is allergic to back to back killer games.

has dude ever had consecutive 25 point games?

I’m sure he has but it just feels like 1 game he’s up and more than likely the next game he will be down.

Of course he’s always been inconsistent but do act like Jokic ran him out of the building lol

I still remember when AD went scoreless in the national championship game at Kentucky

MPJ and KCP are going to get roasted the next few days, rightly so. They were just awful. No buckets, terrible job closing out, and just some insanely stupid play (KCP giving up TWO momentum-killing 3 point fouls... wtf man). And apart from a decent flourish to end the game Jamal wasn't up to par either.

Miami obviously didn't have those sorts of issues with their role players. And to that end, it never feels good to take an L to this team when Jimmy has largely been mediocre (even though he was finding ways to contribute w/ playmaking and D).

And then there's just the general waywardness of it all. Q's 1 and 4, we came out flat as shit and Miami was anything but.

This was never gonna be a sweep, and credit to Miami for stealing that. A lot to chew on ahead of game 3.

Longo mentioned in our fantasy B-ball thread that MIA had one of the most efficient 4th qtrs in NBA history. Don't think they get that again. MIA played basically to their ceiling and won by 3 and Den pretty much played to their floor defensively and lost by 3 and about 75% offensively.

Come out aggressive and get game 3 and show em.

Murray needs to be more aggressive to start, only 3 shots in the 1st. Him getting going is the key to opening everything up for the other guys

Also mentioned that against the zone Denver should move Joker into the middle from one of the wings instead of trying to enter with the PnR and him fighting against a smaller guy and getting collapsed on.

congrats to MIA, i said i thought Denver could win letting them shoot 3s and they knocked them down. Definitely think KCP is better next game defensively. MPJ on Bam, might actually work a bit better as his length and shot blocking feels like it would irritate Bam more.

Which is not at all to say our overall performance was anything great - let me be super clear on that - but... sometimes shit like that happens. There isn't a counter for a team not missing. It's also not all that sustainable. Games 3 & 4 of the Phoenix series primed me for this, lol.

his players. He verbally blasted them, when, to me, he was the
one that blew the game with his coaching.

You got 12 seconds left on the clock and you need a 3 to tie the game,
so you don’t have a lot of options in that situation. If you’re down by 2,
that’s different. You have more options with that particular possession,
so you can disregard calling a timeout and simply drive to basket for the
tie or get a mid range shot.

He should have called a timeout to design a play for his players to
get a clean look at the basket, and to strategize a way to get the rebound
if the shot is missed.

It was poor, poor coaching down the stretch. How do you not take advantage of
12 seconds left on the clock?. That was amateurish coaching.

His words weren’t very encouraging, and that’s how coaches lose the locker room.

Is this your first time listening to a Mike Malone presser? I have no problem with what he said. Malone is an old school coach. He's not losing the locker room. Chill.

Not calling the timeout was fine in that situation. You have two closers on the court running right into Miami on their heels. Jamal got a good look. It was on line and it almost dropped.

This is a damned if you do or don't. If he calls the timeout and they miss the shot people will bitch. If they don't and miss the shot.....people will bitch.

Michael Porter Jr has been ass so far this series. Once he gets going even a little bit Denver will be fine. THey're probably fine anyway.

You have a final timeout and 12 SECONDS on the the clock to work. You take
advantage of that time, and if the play you drew up doesn’t work, there
is still time on the clock to make something happen.

The defense has the advantage in that situation because the team needs a specific score,
because a 2 is useless, so it allows the defense to sit on all shooters, which is what happened forcing a highly contested shot. He played right into the hands of the defense.

Side out with 12 seconds left, set a motion play to put pressure on the
defense..because the defense has no idea what you’re going to do.

Poor, poor coaching down the stretch in all forms. He got completely out coached by
Spo.

Malone has not won anything as a coach, but he comes as if he has.

Like I said either way someone will bitch if the shot gets missed.

There's no guarantee they make the shot even from a set play AND you allow the defense to setup.

Also, saying Malone hasn't won anything doesn't make any sense for this example. No one wins shit till they win shit. He's in the Finals.

Look I think Spo is the best coach in the league.....but Malone isn't some sorry ass coach.

WCF…He is just getting over that hump.

I’m not saying he is trash or a bum, but he isn’t legendary status either
Shit Bud got fired and he won a chip… and Bud was without Middleton last year
and some of this year and Giannis got hurt during the POs

If he doesn’t get it done with this group of players, come on.

Next year, Clippers are going to be healthy. Suns will be healthy and with Nurse.
Sac is coming, and GS will be there….

You just outlined what happened with Bud but glossed over the fact that Jamal was out for an entire year and MPJ has been hurt as well.

Sooooooo that's Malone's fault? Shouldn't he get the same yeah but you just gave Bud for the last couple years???

Malone lost to Phoenix who went to the Finals and to Golden State who went to the Finals. Without two of his best players for most of that.

So I guess they should have fired Malone a few years ago like these other dumb ass teams are doing. No one wants to pay their dues and grow anymore.

Bud had a more extensive resume, chip, Giannis and Middleton being injured,
and he got canned.

Bud damn near got the Bucks back to the chip last year with no Middleton ( second best player on team), so I don’t want to hear anything about Malone not having his second
best player in Murray..

Malone hasn’t won anything, and if he doesn’t get it done this season with this extremely
talented team, come on.

He is on that seat of possibly being an overrated coach.

cuz, that's exactly what they did.

he's just not trying to give away the sauce (not that it's even secret tbh) in a national presser.

in every game these playoffs where Jokic got 40 points or more, the Nuggets lost, and i think they are like 4-5 in the last 9 (including regular season) where that's happened.

obviously he's not lying when he says it's not THAT simple, but it's also still the thing to do.

right hand. It doesn’t look like he is going to return any time soon.

I’m really impressed with Duncan Robinson. He used to be a guy that teams
attacked aggressively on offense, so it was hard to keep him on the court
due to his poor poor defense.

But he has shown a lot of fight and competitive spirit. He is driving to the basket
with no fear on offense, and even though he isn’t a great defender, he isn’t as bad
as he used to be.

He was hugely responsible for the heat winning, him and Vincent

“A party familiar with process had told me over weekend that Tyler was not playing in this series. But that was just one of many familiar with situation, not enough to make it anything definitive. Just pointing out such sentiment is out there from those familiar with the process.”

Maybe a game 5–7, but that’s even a stretch.

I don’t expect to see him in game 3 or 4 with the issues that he is still experiencing with
his hand… and even if he does return his minutes will be highly restricted due to the
time off and the possibility of re-injuring his hand.
