If that's the case, why do you dislike the flick? It's been years since I saw it, and I have no desire to see it again, but I don't remember it necessarily being bad. I felt a bit let down given all the big names attacked, but it was a fairly pedestrian action movie from what I could remember.

I felt that it was the least inspired of the bunch, but it oddly received a good amount of critical acclaim. To me it was like a robot had watched a ton of Boston movies and wrote a script. Outside of Renner and Blake Lively, I didn’t think the performances were that great. Plus, the bad guy ends up winning and it’s played up as this sorta heartwarming moment. I didn’t find Affleck’s character to be redeemable enough to get away with that.

I can't imagine a Michael Scott-like head coach who thinks, "Yes - The Town will get them pumped...let's watch it over and over."

If he's joking about that - then...I don't REALLY get the joke, but that's kinda funny.

If he's serious...what?

He makes the team en masse watch that movie over and over with him?

If it's the latter, that sounds like a colossal waste of time. I thought teams normally watch game film together or if the individuals are truly dedicated, one-on-one with an assistant coach to get an opponents tendencies.

Watching Ben Affleck stroke his ego for 2+ hours doesn't sounds like a prudent way to figure out how to beat Miami; but what do I know?

Last game, they had the Cs as 9 point favorites..I automatically knew
that was too many points. Heat won. I won

Now for this game they got them as 10 point favorites!

WTf. that’s clearly a fishy ass spread..

Either the first game was a book making error which rarely happens,
and today’s game is really going to be a blow out…or Vegas has malfunctioned.

I will not bet today’s game…just going to play fantasy.

My heart is telling me blowout or a big Cs win based on that spread…but NOPE

I’m chilling

Doesn’t this happen often? The idea being that most people think the favored team will bounce back/be more motivated after a surprise loss in Game 1, so the spread goes up for Game 2 to compensate for that betting action. It’s not rocket science.

don’t work that way when you have a prolific team like the Heat,
and the history of how closely contested heat and Cs game are.

The previous game and history of the each team are always factored into the
spread …that shit was clearly not the case here

And my suspicion was correct again! And another Heat win, so that’s
two games where the Heat were practically double digit dogs..and won.

To get those spreads wrong by a seriously wide margin is not normal
book making…today’s game was a + 17 incorrect margin.

In response to Reply # 66

They care about where the bets are being placed. The line was upped because more people would be interested in betting on the Celtics given that people were expecting a bounce back game from the Celtics. The actual result of the game is inconsequential. The line is just an attempt to even out betting on both sides so the bookies can guarantee that they make money. Again, not rocket science.

probability of a sports game. They highly base numbers on the form
and results of each team….

https://bookies.com/guides/how-bookmakers-create-odds

“These days, betting odds compiling is about number crunching and using databases of information to set the market. Traders will analyze dozens of sports to correctly assess the probability of every outcome. The vig is then applied to the price, which helps set the bookmaker’s price.

For instance, it might be as simple as analyzing the home team’s previous results compared to the away team’s form. By running the numbers through mathematical models, odds compilers can quickly set odds in real time.”

So in the case of the Heat/Celtics, the spreads were highly inaccurate and not even
close to the ending results, where as with the Lakers/Denver, they pretty much hit on the
head. The spread in that game was -5.5. Denver won by five

- History of the two teams playing against each other
- the current form of each team
- home and away
- injury report .

All of that is highly, highly factored in. If it were just based on falling trends and actions
of bettors, books would lose money.

It’s is rocket science and then some, highly elaborate calculations and systems
are used to created odds/spreads

And the Heat/Celtics games was highly erroneous ..because none of the two games came
close to the spread. Books do make errors and this is one of them.

"The aim of the bookmaker is to make a profit. And the better they are at calculating odds the more profit they can make long-term."

they're bookies, they're not predictors, and they're not pretending to be. they ultimately do not gaf how what the score is if they make money. and to do so, they ultimately respond to how bettors are reacting to these two teams:

"betting odds are changing all the time to reflect the weight of money moving around. If a rank underdog is suddenly attracting a lot of money, the betting site can move quickly to reduce the odds and protect their margin.

Conversely, if the favorite is attracting a lot more of the money, the odds on the underdog will likely increase."

>And the Heat/Celtics games was highly erroneous ..because none
>of the two games came
>close to the spread. Books do make errors and this is one of
>them.
>

no, they didn't make "errors", because they made money both games, which was the goal. If the Celtics or the Heat had won by 50, bookies wouldn't lose any sleep over it, they would simply factor that in to the next spread to even out the betting.

It’s been like this since the 2020 team. Zero fanfare for a team that’s been to the finals and is 2 wins away from another.

I also said this team is entertaining as hell.

They’re also beating the Celtics, which I love.

Calm down.

so the lebron heat jerseys you saw during those years (and im sure they were all over LA because they were all over NYC when i was there those years), do you think those people are still heat fans today? (not angling for a smartass thing here..genuinely curious)

(Lol at Minneapolis tho)

Honestly, most of this is anecdotal - but I felt like you couldn’t escape Heat fans in like 06 and then 2011-2014. A friend is from Miami and she was a crazy Heat fan until LeBron left and then it felt like she didn’t give a shit (even when they made the finals!). The online presence seems wildly smaller too. It’s just kind of an observation - not in the way of empty seats for home games (I think that was a bit overblown).

It’s probably MOSTLY due to this place being a fraction of what it was even in the Heatles days, but I can’t call it. You’d definitely see waaaaaaaaay more Wade/Bron and perhaps even Bosh jerseys out in the world than I’ve personally seen of Jimmy jersets. It’s just strange. You’d think it being a major city and the team success would at least come across more out in the world, but that hasn’t been what I’ve seen. Hell, just today while out and about in Pasadena I saw Suns, Clippers, Lakers, and Sixers gear but no Miami…which is kinda unusual during the playoffs because so many people here are transplants, so all the team support usually comes out in the summer.

I could be off base, but it’s just strange is all

In response to Reply # 63

I found this so fascinating
https://youtu.be/lcqYKEXUZeQ

In short, Pat Beverly said that half the players in the league don’t even like to ball and Gil agrees. Gil used the example of Jimmy Butler being labeled a malcontent when really he’s just a basketball obsessive who was in fragile environments previously. Guys like Towns and Ben Simmons whined incessantly and got coaches fired and still haven’t won anything, while Jimmy moved to Miami and became a postseason demon because Riley and Spo are as fanatical as he is.

Players’ passion and professionalism really does matter and define culture and it’s too often taken for granted. Like did you know in Miami guys who play less than 20 minutes run sprints after games? IN THE NBA?!? When I heard that my jaw hit the floor.

But then you see it working - you see how vicious Jimmy is, how hard they play on defense, that the team never gets tired.

speak his mind and call out others who he perceives aren’t giving their best. As a result, he’s perceived to be “difficult to manage” and it creates rifts between him and some of his teammates and coaches/ front office management. It’s why he was shipped out of Chicago and then Minnesota. It’s why he probably left Philly. He couldn’t take Brett Brown (and his coddling of Simmons) serious. By all accounts, Embid loved Jimmy and wanted him to stay. The fans loved him too.

I think there’s definitely some revisionist history going on with the Philly narrative. There was no guarantee Jimmy would resign and there were lots of rumors that Jimmy was looking elsewhere. Most analysts/writers gave Philly a high grade for the trade at the time. Think about it; There were lots of concerns at the time regarding Butler’s long term health and productivity due to his over-usage in Chicago. Philly got a young ascending, 2-way and potential solid player in Josh Richardson (on a cheap contract too). It also freed up cap space to sign Tobias Harris and Al Horford. In theory, those 3 guys *should* have provided more value than Butler. It’s easy to say now that Philly should’ve realized Simmons is a bum, but it would’ve been highly risky to part ways with him at the time - given his age, ability, and potential. Unfortunately for Philly, the trade went far worse than anyone could’ve predicted. I’m not going to defend the Sixers too much bc they’re one of the worst run franchises over the past 35 years, but it’s not like this was a horrible, head-scratching move at the time. In retrospect, yeah, it backfired spectacularly.

than Philly, a lot of spectacular performances, but at the end of the
no trophy.

Same thing with Spo after Lebron.

So even though Philly and Embid have not won anything, neither has Jimmy
after the trade

Shit Monty took the Suns from basement dwellers to the finals, and helped
Booker to make the leap to superstar…dude is now out of a job.

I like Spo and Jimmy, but at the end of the, they should get the same treatment as
other players and coaches for not bringing home the prize.

NBA finals, conference finals…no ring

And again I like Jimmy and Spo ..but let’s not go from underrating them to overrating
them.

We’ve seen this Cs team constantly put themselves in this type of situation, even
when they were under Udoka.

I think the pressure shifts a little bit, because now the perception is that the Heat will
win this series…and we know what the Celtics did last year.

Can the Heat step on the Cs neck and close the show? Or will the Cs
make another comeback in a series

I thought it was unlikely the Celts were going to re-sign him in the off-season anyway, and that probably sealed it. Great locker room presence and he & Tatum have a great friendship, but he went from making the most of the minutes he got to trying to box out of his weight class REAL quick. Once you saw Jimmy’s smile, you knew what was gonna happen next.

Anyways, this sucks… I wouldn’t put it past this team to turn it on on the road and win the series, but I can’t even bring myself to get excited about it. This team has been beyond frustrating the last few weeks. The second I think they’re out of their funk, they get right back in it.

I love what I see from him down the stretch in games. Most of his stuff looks inevitable. IE: when he starts working people in what what is now considered no man's land (not in the paint, not behind 3), it just seems like a dude who is about to get a good shot almost certainly. And he usually does. It is wonderful to watch..especially when he gets hot and stays that way.

Genuinely feels like it could be a finals for real basketball fans. In the way that the Spurs/Pistons in 05 was an all time classic, I think Denver/Miami has such great possibility to be a back and forth series with superstars doing big shit. It should be really fun to watch for anyone who enjoys the game.

i remember when the playoffs started, i heard multiple journalist with podcasts question if he really had the coaching accumen to adjust in the playoffs when things got rough.

kinda looks like the answer to that question is "no."

especially with a couple good coaches available, seems like his time will end in the next game or two.

in what ways do the Celtics reconstruct this team? From coaching to roster. I don't think this is a blowup situation, but you clearly can't run THIS squad back out there, next year. Does Jaylen go somewhere and get his own situation? Last run for Big Al...?

Maybe some minor roster tweaks here or there as necessary. Escalate from there if things aren't looking good as the season progresses. Tatum/Brown is a great duo and still pretty young. I would not hit eject on that any time soon if I didn't have to.

I honestly think a better coached version of this team is your current favorite to win it all (by far). Mazzulla has been fucking terrible.

In response to Reply # 134

Folks should keep in mind this will be the third new coach for the team within the last three years.

With that said, say the Celtics front office fires Mazzulla and brings in another head coach; what will the expectations be for the next head coach so they will keep their job? Will the next head coach have to get to the Finals? Win a championship?

To be clear, I'm not a Celtics fan, so I don't care that deeply, but I think setting a standard for a first year head coach to get fired in his first year for not getting to the Finals is a bit extreme and more of a restart than folks here realize. The dude clearly had his faults, but firing Mazzulla feels a bit extreme.

Clearly, I could be wrong in my assessment.

I'd have to think the standard for this roster as constructed is finals or bust from here on out.

In light of that, you just can't get swept/gentlemen's swept by an 8 seed in the conference finals. With the coach looking badly out of his depth the whole way through (and prior to that as well).

This is a 32 year old dude thrust into telling a bunch of 24-35 year olds how to do their jobs because his old boss got fired for *mysterious actions* while he himself is learning how to do the job he's got.

Being in the restaurant business, sometimes you find yourself with a GM by accident due to unforseen circumstances and the ship stays right because the ship was built well...but it also doesn't mean you can't take a step back after a year and recognize certain employees aren't performing the way you thought they were anymore, or something as vague as the "vibes" are off.

Even though they won Game 4 I can't believe this dude straight up said he lost the locker room. Even if they cleaned this series up and became the first team down 3-0 to ever win a series I'd still strongly consider firing him just for that.

Assuming Miami wins, I’d be happy to watch them go against Denver in the finals. Got no hate for either team. I would love to see Butler get one/Spoelstra get another, but would also like to see Murray/Jokic get one as well.

they took their foot off the gas defensively hoping that Boston would just lay down and they could coast to the sweep, and Boston ALMOST obliged.

they won't be lazy on defense again.

Jimmy had an off night too. that probably won't happen two games in a row.

be surprised if they were to win out.

Did it last year against the Bucks and against the Sixers this year.
They know how to play from behind.

I see them winning in Boston. Letting the guards play over the top instead of sending
the bigs up was a nice adjustment, and they still have two elite closers.

and the Heat don't have much of a choice but to put Lowry in the starting rotation.

What I'm assuming Spolestra is going to have to do is have Butler be the defacto point shooting guard, initiate double teams off wing/paint penetration, and kick the ball out to the open man, and save the Heat from trying to have Lowry initiate the offense and just end up turning the ball over. Dude just doesn't have the speed to create his own shot, outside of getting switched onto a Boston big as result of Heat screens. As draining as that'll be for Butler, I don't think they have much of an alternative choice.

I'm surprised they didn't make that simple adjustment during last night's game.

...I think these wins are probably saving Mazzulla's job. Even if it's not clear whether he's actually that good of a coach or not. It also likely means that they won't trade Jaylen Brown (I doubt they would have received good value for him anyway).

He is Brad Steven’s guy, and there was/is nothing that is going
change that. That’s a narrative generated by the media.

He is going to be given ample time to coach Boston. That’s pretty much
a given.

i realize i don't have the benefit of their tech.

also, i don't know exactly what the rule is there: do they put the clock at when the foul literally happened, or when the whistle was blown?

either way, would have been nice for them to show all of us how they determined that there was 3.0 seconds.

push in the back at 3 seconds…but check it: the ONLY reason they got that time was Joe M’s challenge. The play automatically triggered a review to determine if it’s 2 or 3 shots for Jimmy, but if Joe doesn’t challenge, Boston doesn’t get ANY extra time….and as we saw, they needed EVERY bit of that 3 seconds.

he put his hand on his back but didn't push him, cuz i saw that and saw multiple people talking about it online.

everyone knows the foul was actually him having his hands in Butler's wheelhouse when he raised up, thus fouling him on the arm(s). that happened at 2.7 (or less).

but, whatever.

that's when he fucked up. i knew it wasn't going in once he did that.

in the postgame they were saying he shouldn't have taken the second but he was in rhythm for that one at least.

i mean, ultimately those didn't cost them the game. they could have salted it away but not boxing out actually cost them the W.

an actual COACH, the ball didn’t bounce their way. They wanted to force them
into a long shot, which should have led to an EXPIRED clock. Either they
make the shot or they don’t …but time expires.

With 3 seconds left the focal point was to have everyone guarding the perimeter because
that essentially should have been the last shot. But the shot does a soft bounce out
of the rim ( because it almost went in), and goes straight to white for a quick put back.

They kept the Ball out of Tatum’s hands, Smart put up a desperate long shot, but the
unexpected happened in the end.

whether Struss did what he was "supposed to do" they didn't box out a guy who happened to burn them and win the game. and all i said was they didn't box a guy out. i never laid blame at Struss' feet. you just put those words in my mouth.

so, SOMEHOW, SOMEWHERE, they failed. coulda been Struss fault, coulda been someone elses. but, they didn't box out on the game winning put back, and you HAVE to guard for the offensive rebound better than that.

press the inbounder to make it difficult for him to get a good pass in…or drop Struss down to help deny a pass to Tatum or Brown. They chose B and it worked for its intended purpose. It was just a miraculous play. That ball came off the rim so damn soft. Respectfully, I disagree that the Heat did anything wrong. They just got beat on a play that you couldn’t possibly account for.

he gets 90million to take and make 3s at a high clip and he never has been able to do that.

They are not suppose to be here, and it was a miracle that led them to
losing game 6. They were never favorites. Plus Jimmy, Spo and heat culture has too
much respect,too much respect.

This team highly overachieved based on the competition it has faced.

It will be a tough loss…but Playoff Jimmy was certified in the bubble and last year.

And Playoff Jimmy is just that because his numbers increase tremendously in the POs.

What’s hilarious though is that he said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Boston won the series. As if a team accomplishing something historic wouldn’t be surprising.

Just another dumb ass thought from the guy who “doesn’t believe” in homosexuality. As if he fucking matters 😂

He didn't ring chase, and re-upped with the org that drafted him. Old school.

He's never had much help, since LA left.

Seems like a good dude, his game is dope, and he's done more on his own than a lot of dudes have (including the most-skilled, flat-earthed dweeb who is prob going to run to Lebron this summer)

I don't get why ya'll hate on the man.

And he has absolutely achieved more than most on that list. I mean, Luka's fat selfish ass? Are you kidding me?

Devin Booker is 26 yrs old and led his team to the Finals at age 24. Its weird Booker would even be compared to Butler considering the age difference and what Booker has more than accomplished compared to 26 yr old Butler.

Joe isn’t a weirdo at all, nor is his act a schtick like with Pop
and Bill. It’s funny how Bill and Pop get away with being
assholes, but here you have a black coach who is stoic and
has a social and emotional deficit, but he gets ridiculed.

It’s a true reflection of how regular black men with those same
chemical situations get treated by the police compared to their
white peers who are similar.

I honestly think we need to explore trade options. One of the biggest problems with the Celtics (besides needing a better coach) is there is no true floor general. A prime Rondo would have had these guys damn near savages in my opinion. I'm getting more and more comfortable with exploring a Dame trade. If Portland is really willing, I'd see if they take Brown + Brogdon for Lillard and Simmons. I know big wishing but we gotta do something. I'm just scouring the league. I'd rather have Beal than Brown dribbling off his foot 200 times a game. I'm just over it.

In response to Reply # 398

I have to assume Brad Stevens will ask for everything including the kitchen sink if Jaylen Brown gets traded as I'm assuming he follows under the practice of his former boss Danny Ainge.

At the same time, if the Celtics don't offer Jaylen Brown a supermax, that will have to hurt his trade value a touch, no?

I understand your frustrations with Jaylen Brown as it looks as if his game is still at the same level as it was last year. Still have to keep in mind how young him and Tatum are and that failure was him not getting to the Finals. Makes more sense in my eyes to remain patient since both dudes are still so young and the Celtics aren't in a must win now mode like the Sixers are; the Bucks are a relatively old team as well outside of Giannis, so blowing up the young core of Tatum and Brown right now could be a miscalculation when you factor the state of the Sixers and the Bucks.

Brad Stevens does appear to have some decisions to make this off season.

*edit*

I saw that you mentioned Marcus Smart is a liability offensively and I agree somewhat, although with Tatum and Jaylen Brown, I don't know if you truly need someone that was on a young Rondo's level to solve Boston's issues. If you want to go down that road, how high are you on Fred Van Fleet? I mention his name because I'm guessing Toronto is at a cross-roads and I'm going to assume they'll blow that team up and look to reset. I believe he signed a relatively large contract a year or two ago and he's small, so I dunno how much you'd want him in a Celtics uniform. I also imagine he's not even in the same stratosphere defensively as Marcus Smart, so bad defensive issues at the 1 position could be a concern with him.

Ignoring the other two names you mentioned as I don't think the Celts will be willing to give up enough to get Lillard or Beal, I can't see the Pacers giving up on Haliburton. He's too young and too good of a point guard to give up on, much less to a team that is light-years better than them in the East. Unless you know more than me about them wanting to blow things up and resetting, I can't see the Pacers putting him on the market.

It seems like they’ll give JB the max and run it back again. Sounds like they want to give Mazzula another shot and hire a couple experienced assistant coaches to surround him with. I’m okay with that. I just don’t think we would get enough of a return for JB and like you said him and Tatum are still young. I understand and feel the frustration of everyone though because it’s like, these dudes have how many playoff games and eastern conference finals worth of experience and it’s still the same result with the same exact problems.

those guys have had 3 coaches in 3 years, they need some sort of stability.

I'm not a fan of giving Jaylen all that money because he's hurt all the time. I would try to move him for Beal and get the STL connection going.

What? lol

Jaylen has played an avg of 10 games more than beal over the last 4 seasons. Prior to that, Beal played 82, 82 and 77, while Jaylen was 70+ those years.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

A lot of my fellow Boston fans don't want to hear it but Beal's skillset is more suited to play with Tatum than Brown. Celtics need a truly dynamic scorer who can break defenses down consistently off the dribble. The "off the dribble" part is a huge problem for Brown. He can't go left to save his life.
