"2023 NBA Playoffs: Week 4"
Sun May-07-23 01:16 PM by CyrenYoung

2-1 across the board and teams are scrambling to make adjustments ahead of game 4.

On deck:

Boston @ Philly (3:30p)

Tatum & Brown look to put even more pressure on Embiid & Harden.

Denver @ Phoenix (8p)

Murray & the Joker attempt to bury KD & Booker's hopes of making this a series.

What say you?

*skatin' the rings of saturn*

..and miles to go before i sleep...

I think Embiid is nowhere near 100%...but 65% Embiid and Bath Salts James can cook the C's.

As for Denver, I think KD realized he has Baby Kobe running with him, and he is enthused. He damn near beat Giannis, Middleton and Jrue by himself, he and Booker can definitely beat Jokic and Murray and MPJ.

In response to Reply # 0

people keep bringing it up but it doesnt make sense for either side.

harden has no title shot in houston and doesnt seem like the type of dude that wants to spend the end of his career mentoring young guys on a losing team.

and houston clearly wants to rebuild with young talent. so why would they commit the type of years and money to harden that he will be pushing for?

Those floaters he kept hitting - so tough.

Even the game winning 3, extending a bit to catch it low and to the side, and then rebalancing isn’t the easiest thing. A guy like that can do it in his sleep, but it still made it a tougher shot than it would be if it hit him in the hands and in rhythm.

That’s 2 huge games now this series.

Sixers almost blew this though. Up 15 with a minute to go in the 3rd and they did a terrible job closing out the quarter and then were cold throughout the 4th.

19. "That Embiid/Smart charge is the worst thing about basketball"
In response to Reply # 18

It’s been ruining college b-ball for 25 years, and I hate when it shows up in the pro game.

Embiid tried to go around Smart and tried to avoid contact. He gained ZERO advantage from the contact. In fact, the contact made his shot more difficult.

Smart just stood there hoping to get run into so he could fall. He made zero attempt to defend. He even leaned forward to make sure contact happened. Absolutely hate it. Should be a block or a no call every single time. Never a charge.

The play where Embiid jumped to contest Tatum’s layup, and Tatum turned his body and chucked up some bullshit over his head and got the foul call….smh. That’s a no call. Tatum didn’t even take a real shot, Embiid jumped straight up, and any contact was caused by Tatum.

Players should be encouraged to play defense and contest shots, and discouraged from standing in the way and falling down. Would be a way better game.

Also, maybe call traveling(which Embiid absolutely did), and illegal moving screens so guys can’t get downhill so easily.

In response to Reply # 19

changing. Tatum threw a forearm to Maxey’s upper chest/throat and it’s a no-call.
Yet Embiid gets a charge on a play where he didn’t use his body or arm with force, Smart clearly flopped and made no attempt to challenge the shot.
And then when Tatum twists his body so his back rams into Embiid and just tosses the ball up??! FOH. Shit is garbage.

And yes, I agree on the traveling…though he’s certainly not alone in that regard.

I for sure thought the Sixers were going to succumb to another typical Doc Rivers post-season collapse in that fourth quarter. Props indeed to James Harden performing in that situation, especially against a top level defensive team like Boston.

you don't think Draymond gets suspended if he does that, even though it seems like most are in agreement that the owner dude was an idiot for holding the rock?

OF COURSE DRAYMOND GETS SUSPENDED.

so, suspend Jokic.

Not suspend Jokic

Asking for them to be more punitive isn’t the answer IMO

Not that you have the power to change that

But the general principle, IMO, should be to be less punitive in the name of fairness, not more.

But even you have to admit that Dray has made himself a somewhat special case when it comes to these things

I know Jokic has had some run ins, though I don’t follow him like that. The Warriors are high profile and have been for nearly a decade now, so I pay attention to them. So I could be overlooking some things. I know his brothers tried to get on some thug shit, but that’s the most I can recall.

In response to Reply # 50

He got justly suspended for the *retaliating*- so let's not pretend that it happened in a vacuum.

That said, he was wrong, shouldn't have done it, and got suspended for it.

But this isn't that. This is an extremely minor nudge of a billionaire who acted like the ball was his to keep and put his hands on Jokic first.

To that end, none of this changes anything about what I said:

The proper course is to advocate for a less punitive system, not a greater one. I don't know if Jokic's issues are on par with Dray's. Dray puts himself out there verbally too.

Moreover, this was an entitled billionaire who decided to take an opportunity to interject himself in the game, and got brushed off in the process.

Since Dray is the barometer here, do you *really* see this as on par with stomp/jump/flopping/etc off a players chest (also in retaliation)?

I don't think the two are on par, and I think the Dray/Sabonis incident is a bad barometer for this.

i don't give A FUCK about the Suns billionaire owner.

i care about suspending Jokic. that's it. players aren't supposed to get physical with the crowd, period and when they have, i THINK (don't quote me cuz i don't have a mental NBA rolodex of every moment in history) they've gotten suspended.

the hypothetical is if it was Draymond forearming a fan (who cares if they are a billionaire team owner or not, take that out of the equation).

if Dray had done it, therefore, an equal action, he's suspended. and that would make sense NOT because Draymond is a "habitual line stepper" but because the league has taken a hard line on physically interacting with fans with any aggression in the past.

Jokic probably won't be suspended.

This whole thing is a non issue

Your problem is rooted in your perception that your guy *would* get suspended if the dame thing happened.

Jokic shouldn't get suspended because you *assume* Dray *would* in the same hypothetical scenario.

That’s not a reasonable rationale.

You're a bigger Nuggets fan than I will ever be, and I'm assuming you actually live in Denver, so I'll bow to you if you disagree, but it seems Denver's strategy of blitzing Durant whenever he gets the ball in the half-court leaves a three point shooter for the Suns wide open. That should be more of a pressing concern than MPJ showing up or not. Unless of course you mean MPJ should show up better defensively, which I won't argue with you at all.

I don't see what the better strategy is there, particularly when AG isn't on him. But we should have definitely switched it up when Shamet started killing us. Still, if you lose b/c Shamet goes off and Booker continues to play with absolutely god-like efficiency, even when we're getting good contests in... idk really know what any team could do w/ that, frankly.

On the other hand... MPJ is here to make shots. If he's on they have no chance whatsoever. We need him to give us more than 11 on 3/13. That's abysmal. And that last pull up 3 he took was an atrocious, momentum-killing decision at the worst possible time.

running 8 deep against this team with CPlea3 slowing down the pace works, but when they get out and running everyone is on dead legs by the 4th. Also, I don't think Book keeps shooting at an 80% clip in Denver, but who know.

They may have legitimately cost themselves a ring or two by paying him and bringing him back year after year, rather than find an actual point guard that isnt injured and old and a loser.

..the Lakers have the better defense and have already proven they can win @ Chase.

The Warriors have struggled on the road all year.

Both teams need a victory tonight, but a loss impacts the Warriors much more.

LA can survive a loss tonight and still be in solid standing to win the series. On the contrary, a loss for the Golden State would be damn-near insurmountable.

The onus lies with the Lakers, but the pressure belongs to Warriors.

That said, I want the Lakers to show up and show out.

it becomes a 3 game series with 2 home games for the dubs where they play better in general, have the home crowd behind them which gets intense if 3s start raining, and most likely a favorable whistle which they didn't have in game 3 for sure.

in fact, WHOEVER wins tonight wins is my prediction (easy to say if the Lakers win, i know) cuz if the Lakers win, i could see the Dubs putting up a GOOD fight but the Lakers are talented enough and play well enough to withstand even the coldest Warriors effort for one of the remaining three games.

and maybe i only think this cuz a lot of random shit has worked out for the Warriors over this run so everything just feels rosy, but while i obviously don't want them to lose, i could see it being a good thing for them.

they messed up their chemistry this offseason and made a gamble on youth that didn't work out...AND...maybe they are just over-worked and tired and "suffering from success."

so, losing COULD give them needed rest (vs. playing all the way to the finals again if that happened).

and, if they can keep Draymond at a decent price, and straighten out or trade Poole, and fix their bench rotation?

they could probably run at it again for a couple more years.

that's a lot of ifs though so who knows.

If your counter argument for any player getting a suspension is Draymond got one.....then kindly STFU.

Don't ever use that knucklehead ass dude as an example.

Dray basically leaves the league no choice but to suspend him at this point because he's a habitual line stepper.

Go ahead a cop whatever pleas you want but he's not the name to bring up.

let's say it was a less hated "agitator" like beverly, smart, etc. still getting suspended. shit, if you ask me if that was MPJ or KCP that had done that they are gonna get a game.

why? cuz the league has ALWAYS been on some "if you have physical altercations with fans? you get suspended"

but, because it's the league's great white love? i'll be shocked if he gets sat down.

Players need to stay on the court and let the refs/security do their job.

Fans need to stay off the court and let the refs/security do their job.

This is pure comedy.

what is the logic behind holding on to the ball and not giving it back?

if anything, he should be suspended for one game for fan interference, bc in this instance , he's a spectator just like the poeple sitting next to him.

edit, maybe fined instead of suspended

it's human nature to hold on to something when someone tries to snatch it from you.

if you re-watch the video, he just caught the ball and was giving his full attention to his player (i think it was Okogie) who had just landed in the crowd.

he wasn't looking Jokic's way at all until Jokic was in his face, and even then he was probably like "why is Nikola Jokic in my face?" not "oh i have the ball and need to give it to Jokic or, more appropriately, a referee"

but i'm just guessing based on what seems normal and what i'd probably be thinking.

everyone acting like he was just TRYING to fuck with Jokic/The Nuggets is out their mind TO ME.

Saying that like he's some doe-eyed newcomer to the entire game of basketball who just somehow happened upon fuckin front court seats to a playoff game. This is the owner of a franchise who played college bball himself. LMAO. Good grief.

He should have let go of the rock IMMEDIATELY. Period. He had zero business holding onto it at all. I know you're a hater but even judging on that curve this is a really weak take.

he was paying attention to his guy you can clearly see that if i was his player i'd hope he was more concerned about if i'm hurt than that he's holding the basketball and needs to get it out of his hands like he's playing hot potato. smh.

I'm assuming that someone who is both smart enough to somehow come into billions of dollars AND familiar enough with the game to have played it at an NCAA level... could probably handle the monumental task of letting go of a fucking basketball while also checking on Okogie. And I'm sure a failure to do that totally had nothing to do with obstruction and/or general bs gamesmanship. Nothing at all.

i dunno. does the team buy them for home games? if so, i guess yes, technically.

not sure how the administration of basketballs goes.

like, are you trying to snark? if you're asking if he gets to keep it vs. getting the ball back into play? of course not, and the ball made it back in play (or *A* ball did not even sure it was the same one), so...what are you getting at?

It’s not snark, it’s a reasonable question based in your comparison that someone tried to snatch something out of your hand, and your earlier remark about it being human nature to react a way when someone snatches something from you.

If anyone is being snarky here, it’s you and your meandering response. My question is crystal clear as a response to your own words.

The fact is, he had no right to that ball, and was in fact interfering with the actual game.

You’re not at all objective about this, and I think you’ve made it quite clear that this is about Dray getting suspended for his own offenses, and you want the league to be more punitive to even the scales.

You do not have a reasonable or even rational stance on this, you have an emotional one.

i said he wasn't intentionally intefering, as many people seem to think.

if you think that he was? we disagree.

and, i never said Jokic was wrong for trying to snatch the ball. i completely understand why he did that.

i also completely understand why a) Ishiba was holding the ball for longer than most would like and b) why he snatched it back when Jokic tried to snatch it.

now what?

why was Jokic acting like its soccer? He still has to give it to the ref and the ref isn’t going to start the game until the Suns player is on his feet and back on the court.

Jokic acting like it was after a made basket.

cuz the thing that was trying to be pulled outta mine? i woulda gladly just gave it to the person had i known they wanted it so badly (this was not a person i knew btw).

we cool tho. no hard feelings.

i'm just here to talk shit and hate on jokic it's not all that deep.

jokic not gonna take the L here and people who like him will be happy and i won't be. it's fine. it's just basketball.

let's move on. if Suns win this series though i'm gonna be annoying (more than i already may be).

maybe so, maybe not.. either way my point remains: how do you go about demanding a certain type of behavior (in that "this is halting the flow of the game!" sense) from the fan? (and who cares if he used to play basketball, etc)

the ball landed in his lap.. and that was his reaction in the moment (and the refs, doing their job stepped in)

if suns are on a 10-0 run in 3Q, and somebody courtside spills their beer/loaded nachos onto court.. delaying the game by 5-10 minutes (and halting their momentum)--do we suspend that person for a game too? my point is why cry foul over an intangible (eg a fan's behavior), regardless of how detrimental it is in the moment

I think they would. It's just weird to not comment on the other side of the interaction.

*** David Stern wonder why the league is losing money, that's why. People pay good money to see these athletes play and they try to take over the fucking game.

***Shaq, we're on live.

***I don't give a shit

The immediate double-down with a straight face, killed me.

Nah b. Aint no reason for Jokic to run into the stands for the ball. Did he think he was going to check it and get a 4 on 5? This aint the YMCA rec league

Owner definitely flopped but why is his big ass elbowing “a fan” in the crowd?

In the sense that his attempt to stop the game from being delayed only delayed the game further and caused more confusion/chaos.

But if we’re talking about a suspension or fine? Nah, not warranted here. Just tell him to stay calm and let the refs handle it when he runs into situations like that.

like just admit you should have called at least *1* timeout at the end of regulation or o.t. instead of blaming your players pace for not getting a shot off in time (i wonder how well that went over in the locker room). maybe call a timeout and save them a few more seconds by advancing the ball to half court?

the autism spectrum. He has all the traits.

One thing is for sure, nobody is going to say that shit to his face

Motherfocker has a BB in BJJ.

You can tell he is not to be focked with by his demeanor

Had a friend that I used to spar with in the African kung fu system…
He was a BB, and I was making my way to a green sash ( nothing major,
just intermediate level). He had the same stoicism and non personable demeanor,
and was diligent and deliberate like a good damn AI

Being ALONG the autism spectrum as an adult, refers to him probably
having Asperger’s syndrome…some of the most intelligent and profound
figures in the world have Asperger’s

It’s not a bad characterization….highly serious, focused individuals..but
aren’t personable….so they get described as weird or odd

“Asperger syndrome is a condition on the autism spectrum,
with generally higher functioning.”

Most people with Asperger’s have an IQ no lower the normal…so they are highly
bright.

The autism spectrum has several levels..I’m putting Joe on the high functionality, highly
intelligent side, just has no sense of being social or personable

You called him odd and weird as fock, which is degrading.

I said his personality fits along the autism spectrum( Asperger’s)…where he is
highly functionality, highly intelligent, but not personable or social…

Stoic, not personable, bright, high IQ, socially void…all traits of Asperger’s

That characterization fits more instead of just calling him weird ass Fock.

theres a big difference in calling someone odd subjectively...and issuing a medical diagnosis that someone themselves never admitted to.

In response to Reply # 0

not sure what the aim is here. maybe keeping d lo under control to begin the game?

iono but going extra small could be a recipe for a.d. getting comfortable early and breaking his even game spell. and gp2 hasnt exactly been making a big impact on either end of the floor this series.

i think the 1st priority should be to stop and demoralize a.d. early. hes the deciding factor in every game.

even when kerr started jamychal green...hes the same size as looney but can stretch the floor and make a.d. leave the paint. lakers prolly dont have to play gp2 the same way.

but it FEELS like they did.

hart just got his 6th foul for getting elbowed in the face by lowry.

i barely watched this game and seen some very sus calls.

now, the knicks can't grab a board so that ain't helping.

Lowry did foul but I can’t remember if it was before or after Hart DID foul him. So it’s not like it was unfounded especially in a game with 45 seconds left and the Knicks down 8 or so

Jules was obviously not crisp, yet Obi played 5 minutes. When Jules fouled out I thought, nice, Obi can help...he puts in Hart, who played well but this isn't the moment we need him. FOCK.

Everytime we turned up our pace, the Heat started folding. Spo would call a play to slow it down. When the pace was up, their shooting suffered. Spo/Butler/Lowry slows it down.

We can go on runs, and we’re at home.

But we don’t have *that* gear the dubs have to go 12-0 in 3 minutes or whatever.

Unless D Lo has another near-supernatural burst in him, and it doesn’t look like he’s got that spark tonight.

I’m in absolute awe of this season. It has been absolutely incredible.

I think we have a squad too.

And I too have touted the fact that we never know who it will be, but someone always shows up. But I think that can be a double edged sword that can cut us back.

But by and large, once I saw what this squad was capable of, my perspective shifted to an all in approach. Whatever happens this year, we need to go all the way in next year. Not sure what that looks like, especially with the new CBA.

I agree that we have a the pieces, but I was not/am not sure we’re quite ready.

For now, we just have to finish off the Dubs, and we have three games to do it. My cynicism still fears a collapse.

He’s not “on” every game. If anything Jokic will be the dominant one in that matchup, in terms of consistency

AD will continue to do his one on/one off routine.

His defense doesn’t follow the same pattern. Outside of Game 5 in Memphis, his defense has been incredible across the 10 games.

I know he’s frustrating, but this is a generational defensive performance we’re watching. If he’s 2004 Ben Wallace who can ALSO score at will? I’m trying not to get too hyped but I’m talking myself into these guys Pistoning their way to a title.

in 9 games i believe.

and he had 30 blocks during the entire bubble run in 21 games.

idk what it is about him physically that makes him tail off on offense but it doesnt seem to be affecting his defense much lol.

i dont expect any surprises for game 5 lol.

if the lakers lose it will be because they just didnt take the game seriously and took their foot off the pedal.

Kerr chose to run with speed vs size and the Warriors fucked around and found out.

Defense and composure are the keys to success (esp in close games). The higher percentage shot still reigns supreme.

This game felt like an ol' school heavyweight fight. Each team made runs, each coach made timely adjustments.

Kerr was out-coached by Ham in this game. That speaks volumes.

Ham put his trust in Walker IV, he stepped up & showed out.

I've seen mistakes made by vets, but I don't think I've ever seen Curry, Green, & Thompson all panic in the clutch at the same time.

That smells a lot like desperation.

The Lakers have a LOT of weapons and depth. A little rough around the edges, but in great hands.

warriors fans dont even cheer for that nigga when he comes in the game.

draymonds only mistake was not hitting him hard enough to end his season.

i dont give a shit how hard that contract is to move...if the warriors have him active on the roster next season then they can kiss my whole ass.

idk whats going on with kerr but...

the plays out of timeouts get stuffed all the time now. niggas have a hard time just getting the ball in. then offense is stagnant once the ball is in and they rarely get the shot thats intended. usually a bunch of chaos and steph/klay just tryna flick up a tough 3.

then his record with challenges in general is horrific.

then you have the situation in game 4 against the kings where he blew a challenge/timeout on an obvious call and failed to communicate to his players that he was out of timeouts (leading steph to get the tech when he called one).

then even tonight he wanted to call for a challenge that he didnt have and almost blew a timeout because of it but the ref actually did him a solid and let him pull it back.

just sloppy stuff from a dominant hall of fame coach.

these great coaches who typically have the best players always look a bit lost once those guys get older and those crazy 3’s aren’t dropping.

its why I hate Phil Jackson and don’t respect him as a coach. Do that shit without Kobe, Shaq or Jordan and Pippen and then I’ll believe you are some fucking basketball savant.

I’m hating but truth be told.. the Dubs have always been sloppy af they just made a shit ton of miracle shots that most teams would miss at a much higher clip.

again, I’m a hater lol

I don’t know enough to know what he’s doing Xs and Os wise. And having LeBron on your team certainly helps. But it’s undeniable how much he has held this team together, with a real purpose, and has them truly believing. He seems to say all the right things in the media. He’s clearly got trust in guys and it pays off.

This Laker playoff run has had big games from Rui, Austin, DLo, and now Lonnie.

He’s coaching his ass off and right now he’s like the rest of the team and peaking at the right time.

the gamble for GS has usually been to "hide" Steph on the worst offensive player in it usually works out but it didn't last because that "worst offensive player" lit them up for 15 points in the 4th quarter, I think Vanderbilt is usually in the game to guard Curry I'm not sure if he was injured or Darvin just made a move

it's not like steph was in the paint daring Walker to shoot.

people talk about Steph's defense WAY too much. He was DEFINITELY giving defensive effort for almost all of the game, but he's not super strong and he's not tall so you're gonna have to just wear that if a guy makes tough shots on you.

How did he lose them the game with a 30 point triple double?

He carried the team on his back all night did you watch the game.

His only "crime" was that he could have shot better (which you always can do that's the case for any player) and that last three but even still he gets paid to take that shot and he's made a million of those.

If you wanna blame a player? Look directly at Klay (and I'd throw a little at Draymond too).

I’m also amazed at the amount of passes kicked out from under the rim.

I know that is their game but grow some nuts and try to draw a foul

Not for the last play, but there was a few times (once right near the end of the game) where he actually got to the basket and had an easy layup and got on some Ben Simmons shit and kicked it back out, and I remember it well cuz they were the only times I was yelling at my TV all night.

But he’s also not a turnstile like he was in the first half of his career

Walker was hitting good shots in key moments for them. But IMO he didn’t have curry on skates like you would see in the earlyish days.

Nothing personal, but the curry bad defender take is outdated now. He’s gotten better on that end. And when you watch you can see that at least the effort is there — which is sorely missing from a guy like Luka who will never improve on that end.

the bottom line is Curry's offense usually greatly outweighs his defense but it didn't in the 4th quarter last night.

You may be right about 24y/o Luka but Can't really think any other great HOF "top 10" players getting hunted on defense like that by a bench player that was getting DNP's most of the 2nd half of the season

shit, even the Lakers didn't expect Lonnie Walker to do that and you can tell that by their reactions and all of the post game shit.

credit to Walker. he made the shots. let's not get carried away.

now, it will be interesting to see if they use him more the rest of the playoffs.

Walker has always felt like a streaky guy though even when he was with the Spurs. this could have been his one streak game.

cuz i blame the refs all the time (LOL).

i didn't have any problem with the officiating.

in fact, i'm having a hard time remembering a bad call either way.

if Kerr is blaming the refs i think it's officially a wrap.

Again, this is the kind of thing you hear from someone in denial.

Smells like desperation.

at the time just from being caught up in the heat of the game, but Kerr seemed to go away from what was working especially in the fourth quarter as far as the pick n roll stuff.

he gotta hold that L and do better.
