"'23 NFL SUPER Wild Card Weekend: ...said the Ravens...never, Lamar?"

We posed to be talking about Wild Card Weekend and we in here talking bout Lamar not practicin'...or playing.

Something stinks in Baltimore, fellas. Listen, the man isn't playing in a "lose and your season is over game"...but, he's also not even practicing, bro. He wants the Watson Deal and the Ravens have said, without saying, they simply are not giving him that. The Roquan the Chef signing makes the franchise tag almost a certainty...and Lamar ain't with that. He CLEARLY can't just be replaced with a dude who's mobile (and I REALLY like Huntley, so no diss) at the same time, he's missed 11 games in 2 seasons. I have a feeling this NFL off-season is going to rival the NBA for drama. Lamar, what happens with Miami/Tua, Brady out there, Carr out there, A-Aron done? But, for NOW....

on to the games, Gents

Saturday:

4:30 pm Eastern
Hawks @ Niners (can Geno shake up the world???)

8:15 pm Eastern
Chargers @ Jags (If Lifetime made a movie about football and at the end, there was a "win and advance" game, the two guys they cast as the quarterbacks would look like Herbert and Lawrence)

Sunday:

1:00 pm Eastern
Dolphins @ Bills (Tua out, obviously. Man, there are some decisions to be made on all sides, down there.)

4:30 pm Eastern
Giants @ Vikes (the one game this weekend, I honestly don't feel anything about)

8:15 pm Eastern
Ravens @ Bengals (Ravens can't really score more than like 12 points, so...)

Monday:

8:15 pm Eastern
Boys @ Bucs (If I went into a deep sleep right before the game and came out of it on Tuesday morning and you told me: Dak threw for 300 yards, we sacked Brady 4 times and won 39-12, OR...Dak threw 2 picks, Brady threw for 300, we had 95 yards in penalties and we lost 39-12...neither one would surprise me. I have no faith in this team, and haven't for a while. I absolutely want to see them do well, but they have given no reason for a fan to believe they will play consistently and can win a big game. I'm fine with it (not really))

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

Slow start by Bucs (per routine), cowboys build double digit lead, Brady leads a furious comeback, aided by 1-2 turnovers (Dak INT or fumble).

From there, who knows.

My suspicion is Dak finally proves himself in a playoff game.

look like they actually practiced this week. Like they actually have a plan to win the game.

Definitely don't like it being on Monday night. I wish the NFL would just stick to Saturday (yeah I know college) and Sunday every week. It won't make a difference overall for me since I work Monday and Tuesday but it just doesn't feel right to have a playoff game on a Monday.

I of course want the Cowboys to win. If they lose I think I prefer a blow out instead of a last second loss.

Not sure it’s wise to trade away both first round picks and fork over a huge contract for an injury prone 27 year old, esp when our O line isn’t that great

At Pass blocking AND run blocking, so, they can protect Lamar when he drops back to throw, and combine his running talent w/ the RB talent already there and it makes for a formidable offense.

Lions are only really lacking a great QB and defense. Lions have money and draft capital for a big move, and a team like the Colts would take Goff off the Lions hands for a couple more picks as well.

I get the hesitancy, but the move makes sense.

His contract is fairly affordable. Goff is also still fairly young.

Why dump Goff now, give him one more year to see if he can keep take them to the playoffs.

The Lions need to use those picks to help with the defense.

but i think it's up in the air about if they'll keep Goff or try to make a move.

because of that o-line, he was one of the least sacked QBs in the league so, maybe? he definitely plays better when not hurried (duh).

maybe they try to make that push with some added defensive talent via the draft next year then make a QB move the year after.

no trying to trap you or anything. Who is the better thrower of the football, in your opinion? Goff or LJack. I ask because you mention a formidable offense and well, they DID have a formidable offense this year. I watched a good amount of Lions' games and I saw Goff throw some fucking DARTS, bro. I think Sun God and the other skill position guys would suffer.

so yeah, maybe i'm wrong.

i guess i'm getting wow'd by a shiny object?

if that line can stay good aka keep him safe, and they can get the defense good? i suppose it's been proven you can win a ring w/ a "game manager" QB and think Goff IS a little more than a game manager (but not great/elite).

so, i could totally be wrong. i'm posting off gut reaction i suppose, or just the fact that Goff doesn't wow anyone at any one thing.

aside from defense, they could definitely use some upgrades at wide out.

if they get WR and defense upgrades (which they should via the draft)? they could be a contender very soon, even w/ Goff.

which is long winded way of going against my original comment, HAHA.

He is more in the very good QB category. Goff has proven that he can put up points and move this Lions offense, he has also proven he can get a team to a SB.

Goffs contract, while a lot of money, would be cheaper than what the Lions would have to pay LJack right today. Not to mention the picks the Lions would have to give up to get LJack.

I think roll with Goff for one more season to see if he can win the division or get you to the playoffs while adding young talent to the roster via the draft is the best bet.

But I don’t think Goff was really the problem this season with the Lions.

Goff is one to two steps below LJack in terms of a QB but Goff is a good QB that has proven he can make the throws and plays necessary for the Lions to score and win games.

Goff and Sun God have a nice thing going right now.

IMO, the Lions need to add pieces to the defense. GB is fading fast, Chicago is unknown, and the Vikes are inconsistent with Cousins. Beef up the defense and the Lions should be able to compete for the North with Goff for the next 5 years.

I think what I was trying to say above, but did a poor job is this: The Lions have a lot on offense. They depend on Sun God routing DBs out of their minds and Goff putting the ball right on him. They got 2 really good RBs, that kid that stepped up in the TE spot after Hockensen got traded is super solid and will only get better, some ok to good receivers (Reynolds, Chark, Raymond) Jameson Williams was starting to come on after that terrible ACL tear in the Championship Game, a good offensive line led by an all-world tackle in Sewell...I just think that Goff is a better QB for THIS Lions team, than LJ would be and if I was Lions' fan I'd be excited for next season and would not want them to give up the farm to bring in Jackson. Make some upgrades at receiver and on defense and see what it do.

I didn’t understand that Hockenson trade but I guess it got them some picks so we will see who they draft with that.

If I’m the Lions I wouldn’t trade all those picks and then give out a big contract just to get LJack when you have other needs and the QB position seems to be in a good place.

I think with defensive additions, Ben Johnson coming back, he leads them to a Division title in this season or next.

He’s already more of a leader and accountable than Matty IceCream ever was. Stafford got a Gruden ring that shoulda been Goffs.

It might be the ugliest game in NFL history. But we're going to finally start putting it together and at least look like a competent, competitive football team. Bucs 27, Cowboys 20.

I'm salty that this is Monday night. I was hoping to get a little loose on the holiday weekend while watching. But a cat has to work on Tuesday morning.

...the Ravens fans I've talked to are despondent, man. They've been playing with their food all season. One could argue two straight seasons of Lamar being hurt and missing multiple games, that you move with caution. But they been doing that dude like Eagles did McNabb pre-T.O. on offense, bruh.

Even if he stays, Ravens need to add talent surrounding him on offense. Bateman, Andrews ain't enough.

As for Cowboys and Boody, you know what it is. Dallas needs to handle business.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Do they realize what they're saying when they say "...upgrade the team around Huntley."? They are admitting the organization has done Lamar a disservice with the talent around him. Shit, Hollywood Brown was his #1 and dude had just over 700 yards receiving with Arizona.

If you just look at the scores of the Ravens' games, you can tell when Lamar got hurt. I like Huntley but he's not the answer.

..both teams are a shell of themselves at this point (injuries, penalties, play-calling, etc.).

If the Bucs were healthy, I'd feel much better about their chances. Fortunately for Tampa, Dallas has just as many issues (inconsistent play on defense). This game is a toss-up. Turnovers will likely mean this game remains close, coming down to the final series, with Brady at the helm.

with how injury prone he has been lately.

Cardinals gave Murray money and look at what happened.

In my opinion, Lamar has physically depreciated compared to how he played a few
years ago. And they don’t know if he is being honest about his physical health, or if he
is sitting out because he isn’t happy with his contract situation.

See if they can get Derek Carr as a filler and go after Caleb Williams in 2024

Hope you plan on continuing this throughout the playoffs.

In regards to the OP:

Ravens gave no indication that they're willing to pay Lamar what he wants. If he truly wants to get paid, he'll be rocking a Jets uniform next season.

The games:

Seahawks @ 49ers (49ers)
Chargers @ Jaguars (Jags)

Dolphins @ Bills (Bills)
Giants @ Vikings (Vikings)
Ravens @ Bengals (Bengals)

Cowboys @ Bucs (Bucs)
*As previously stated (Reply #26), this game could go either way. Anything is possible.

Harbaugh is an excellent coach, is wildly popular with his players, and is a god in Maryland. He’s 1B status to Gary Williams’ 1A. He’s Baltimore’s Mike Tomlin, he’ll only leave Baltimore on his own accord. As a beleaguered Skins fan I’d trade a first for him RIGHT NOW.

He's a good coach, not an excellent one. Most likely after this season, Greg Roman will have to fall on his sword...and Harbaugh will continue to putt putt along.

Lamar represents some what the type of leader that Ed and Ray were to the franchise...DAWGS, who had control of the locker room and backed their off field power with performance. They are (not alone but of prime importance) responsible for the two rings the Ravens have...

Without Lamar, there is no dawg in that lockeroom...it belongs to Harbaugh. And yes the players like him, but he ain't going to lead them back anyone without having strong voices that may when necessary tell him what needs to be said. Until they get this, the Ravens will underachieve.

Mike Williams is as fragile as porcelain. If he didn’t get hurt last week he was getting hurt this week. Should Staley have played him? Probably not. But that would only have delayed the inevitable.

is he has played in every game this season, since 9/11. Staley knew before they even kicked off that they could do no better/worse than the 5 seed. Plus, if YOU know this about Williams....how they hell does Staley not know...or act accordingly? Like PROMO said below, too, he had Keenan Allen running around out there in the 4th quarter...an older receiver who's had his own set of injury concerns!!! For who, for what?!?!? (c)Ricky Watters

In response to Reply # 0

..I'm all for being a team player, but this business still comes down to $$$.

Suit up and play it out, hoping to avoid injury?

OR

Hold out, almost guaranteeing dissension among fans (and possibly the locker room).

Given what we know regarding Lamar Jackson's current situation, would players in similar situations do better by refusing to play without a new contract?

Plenty variables. What say you?

In response to Reply # 61

Cleveland franchise and thought he could get the same but I think it was a case of not having an agent and making a bad decision. The offers B-more was throwing at him last season I don't think he will get this season.

That was a unique situation of a smallish running QB IMO on the decline and his value is going down, not up.

and I haven't watched enough of Lamar lately to speculate on a decline, but clearly he went into negotiations with the mindset of "match Watson's guaranteed money"

I don't see Burrow, Hurts or Herbert getting $250m guaranteed in the future

He thought he could get the same thing and he was wrong. Owners weren't about to start handing out guaranteed contracts just because the Browns are idiots. He overplayed his hand and now has gone two seasons in a row without finishing. The word "injury prone" is going to start to creep in, and his MVP season was four years ago now. Someone on twitter said if Brock Purdy beats the Seahawks he will have the same number of career playoff wins as Lamar Jackson: one. He fumbled.

The upcoming Monday night football playoff game will be the first in the history of the
game.

Arguably the greatest QB to play the game will go up against the most valuable
and historic football franchise.

The numbers are going to be insane.

Offense just looks way better. AND he will only approve with a full off-season. Niners have some thinking to do with Trey Lance. Id trade him for a high pick.

In response to Reply # 92

Jimmy G is gone no matter.

If the Niners lose in the next round or even the NFC championship, I could see them doing a pre season/trading camp competition between Purdy and Lance. With Purdy likely winning out.

I’m also not that they’re going to be able get anything of real value if they do trade Lance. However, If they win it all this year, giving up all those draft picks to get him won’t really matter.

I think he would have a team option after this year on his rookie deal so if any team thinks he is the one would want a year tryout. I may be wrong but i think it is structured that way.

If not Staley, Lombardi has to go. You can’t go full turtle on offense in the 2nd half.

as a veteran. That was semi-roid rage because a false start was missed, which
was fucked up. But you have two maintain your composure …That led to the easy
2 point conversion.

How many times have the Chargers choked in the POs? Too man.

But this has to be the worse of them all.

Maybe them analitix told them to do it that way. Or maybe that’s just how it ended up since the idea WAS that the Jags secondary is horrible and ripe for all sorts of pickings.

Staley is so obviously not the right guy to coach this team. I’d rather see them lose ugly for taking too many risks vs this parade of blown leads and silly decisions late in games.

They were choking all over the field. Miami put up a hell of a fight.

With Tua, they would have beaten the Bills again.

I think the 49iners defense is the only defense that can be
trusted.

Chiefs’ defense is just as bad.

I think the Jags or Bengals will come out of the AFC

and 49iners NFC

I knew Danny would eventually turn into the New Eli with the right system.

Best part of this is that even if the Eagles lose, either Cowboys or Boody are going to the 49ers.

playoff game against a division rival and the face of the franchise can’t get on a jet and fly to Cincinnati to be with the squad? Not even, if nothing else, to be up in the owner’s box? Terrible look, IMO.

>doesn't this cost him millions? bad pr for the job hunt.

Almost certainly.

But hell, something is clearly funny with this situation. We might find out. We might not.

Imagine if they’re coming at him greasy about his injury right now..that could easily be enough for Lamar to be like ‘aight..ima play the crib until I’m totally healthy’.

And shit, if he shows up making faces, bad look. If he shows up and just sits there, bad look. If he gets ‘too animated’ on the sideline, you already know only Brady can get away with that. And if the Ravens fuck around and win this game, them cameras would be all up in his personal space like Bangbros.

If you haven't heard on social, a person placed a bet for over $1M for the Chargers to win when the team was up 27-0. The payout was a little of $10K.

Here's a bit more information - https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/1614603901021437954?s=20&t=liyk5iPTvI5uKdYvIcnB7w

I know nothing about betting so I have no idea why someone would do this. Are they just clout-chasing?

I said it was done at 24-0 because the way the Cowboys were moving the ball and the way TB was doing nothing until the end of the 3rd...

It was possible that they could bring it to 21-24 before it got that far down in the 4th but Bucs were just ass against the Cowboys D

That Bucs team (and I put this on Boody) had been pooping it up all season.

would've become a factor I wonder how much confidence do the Cowboys have in trotting him out next week.

Did he just have a bad day yesterday?

Is it a Chuck Knoblauch/Rick Ankiel situation?

Can they afford to wait and find out?

I'm sure Jerry is probably looking up free agent kickers today lol

..that game was atrocious.

Tampa looked out of sync almost the entire game. They've been playing like a team with no identity all season and Dallas promptly exposed all of it.

*Godwin is a trooper, for real.

Dallas got it going early and never looked back. Their only issue was Maher and those extra pt attempts. WTF @ 4 missed XPs?!

Kudos to the Cowboys and their fans. They have the tools to get it done, but up until now they've rarely put it together when it counted the most.

Next week won't be easy.

*Shoutout to Dr. Claw, who undoubtedly enjoyed this game more than anyone. You got your wish, watching Brady getting humbled and ousted from the playoffs surely made your wkd complete.

Dude put up 100 receptions and 1,000 yards the year following his knee getting destroyed. I don't recall any other receiver coming back that strong the following season after a major knee injury.

it came at the cost of a Cowboy playoff win, so it's not all roses.

Godwin's bounce back, Mike Evans being Mike Evans (the deep threat), the intermediate game still intact more or less, all point to the thing that no one wants to say... Boody was ASS this season. Cowboys defense was ready. I will say that the run game was not much to write home about, Cowboys or not. Little variation on White/Fournette plays.

Ironically this was the season that Bucs finally got some wins on the Aints.

Leftwich apparently is the scapegoat, but I have long suspected that this season/promotion of Bowles etc was a Boody Move to keep things between him and Arians from blowing up.

He really needs to retire, and it's NOT just hating. Tampa is on the hook for $31M if he stays and near that much if he goes elsewhere.

Bucs got a ring out of the whole thing, they're in their best interest of Rams-ing it up and seeing what they can salvage so that in '24 they can really cash in.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Touché

Evans is still Evans, but the uncharacteristic drops were still perplexing. Hoping he's able to clear his head and reset next season.

Fair enough. Without the protection he prefers, he looked average. Elite players are expected rise to the occasion. Brady didn't.

I'm not sure just how much of the playbook was limited due to injuries (or lack of creativity). Again, elite athletes (and coaches) are expected to rise to the occasion. Tampa didn't.

You may be on point with this assessment.
