They’re at every major tourney, have one of the best strikers of this generation, and yet they never seem to try anything. Switzerland used to be like that but they’ve added some flair to their game and aren’t dull as paint anymore.

Oh and fuck those jerk-step penalties forever, makes me mad every time one goes in

Hard to not impossible to enforce a keeper staying on the line and defenders not crashing the box if someone is playing skip to my Lou 5 times in a 7 foot run up.

And it looked like they were tactically set up as a double block in front of the backline; only Matty Cash really seemed to have any interest in progressing the ball, and that's not just my Villa bias showing.

Belgium simply got old, and when you get old you get uncomfortable. Players
weren’t going at each other’s throats. That article is magnifying what every team
goes through whether they win or lose.

Martinez had a solid run with that team, but came up short in the World Cup and
Euro’s. I’ll never forget the run they went on when they were in their prime, beating
everyone in sight. They were ranked high for a reason.

Fock the Atlantic. An American magazine that doesn’t know shit about soccer trying

Sit out and “boycott” World Cup despite Bobby box’s prong every game because of human rights abuse.

Decide you might come back to cheer- on classic Futbol nations - and modern history’s greatest colonizers and humans rights abusers. I know it’s not fully your intention, but the irony did not escape me lmaaooooo. It’s just so classically….you.

Fine fine, I’ll give you Spain, but I’m sure you’d be slobbering for that potential Spain/Portugal match too.

Like, I wake up Saturday morning, see that Southampton is playing Wolves, and I think, eh, gonna boycott that. Later that day City is at Liverpool, and that's a classic matchup, so I admit I might break my boycott to watch that one. Then after that it's Forest and Bournemouth, and the boycott is back on. I have my principles, after all.

I have boycotts in a lot of sports. I've boycotted the Knicks for years...the Orioles...the Jets...lots of boycotts.

One random example would be the side built on oligarch oil money.

Or if that doesn't work, how about an organization that recently spearheaded a movement to destroy European, if not global, club football? Be sure to buy one of their jerseys the next time you can.

You just some dude on the internet.

And you’re an Asian guy who watches the NBA, a league
that advocates and supports a country that commits genocide and
racism against it’s own Asian people. Yeah, YOU watch that.

That’s happening RIGHT NOW.

So shut your pie hole and go munch on a peanut butter sandwich, skippy.

They started improving possession the last 15 minutes of half, but I wouldnt shell up and go defensive on croatia for 45.

Probably won't happen, but I'd love for them to put on super subs and play more offensively like when they're down at the half. That would really put Croatia on its heels and scoring another goal early will give them breathing room from playing tight

and I never imagined that they would jell in this manner. They are technical, but they are performers too...they want to do the spectacular, but there is a cohesiveness that speaks to the Selecao of yesteryear that I haven't seen for Brazil since 2002.

They definitely understand that what happened in 2014 should NEVER happen if Brazil plays the beautiful game...and they have brought it back...its good to see and a fitting way to honor Pele.

All that to say, if they continue to play in this manner, it really is going to change my opinion of Neymar.

yep and yep. I do feel like the quality around the world is a level up from where it has been in the past, but so far in the knock out stage the grown ups have put the kids to bed, given them a pat on the head, and now the grown ups are handling bizness.

still some ways to go though. it's not like all the underdogs were going to knock off all the big nations, but i was definitely hoping someone would shock the world. you can definitely see things changing though. a lot of these nations are making their last run with this generation of players. Messi, Neymar(?), Lewandowski, Modric, Suarez, Ronaldo and others are most likely not coming back. gonna be a lot of change over in the next world cup.

in this year’s World Cup due to injuries. James and Fofana were having
outstanding seasons and would have definitely featured big time for their
national teams.

James’ superior attacking ability down the flanks would have made England even
stronger.

Kante has already won a world cup. However, his career is winding down, so this
was probably his last opportunity to play for his country in the world cup…..but where
one fades, another rises. Camavinga will be ready when he turns 24 ( next World Cup).

dude was clearly a force in the midfield and he had a nice chemistry with Icardi (another player who would be on the Argentinian team if he hadnt pissed off the entire country doing what he did to Maxi Lopez)

(that volley that Ninja hit when he was playing for Cagliari was just *chef kiss*)

Icardi for a a good 4 year stretch was one of best strikers in the WORLD, its just hte rest of the team was not up to standard

Clashed with star players everywhere he went. After he got fired from the Japan job (just before the 2018 World Cup, after guiding Japan into the tournament), Keisuke Honda told press "To submit myself to the kind of football Halilhodžić played in order to get picked, that would be shameful for me. I'm proud that I've stayed true to myself"

He got fired from Ivory Coast job right before the 2010 WC. In fact, Morocco makes the third time he's been fired from a national team between WC qualification and the tournament start.

He left Dinamo Zagreb after getting in a halftime shouting match with the team president.

i mean, if you can call them a "dark horse" as they're pretty fucking good they just don't usually do well enough, or even get put up as potential winners usually.

but this is one of the strongest Portugal teams top to bottom in a long time and they don't have to rely on Ronaldo to get them over the hump like they have the last 3 world cups.

also, sports just has a way of making stories, and it'd be a hell of a story if they won after barely qualifying.

they look really good today, but tougher tests await. gonna be fun to watch.
