"Ain’t no money like Baseball money."

Every year I’m blown away by how enormous baseball contracts are given
out like candy.

Black, White or Latin, players get paid with no hesitation.

Judge is about to receive a 500 million dollar contract…20 years ago
AROD bagged a 252 million dollar contract….football players and BB players
are just starting to see that type of money.

who suddenly lose all that free market fervor the second NBA contracts come into the discussion

Suddenly the demand doesn't matter, nor does the requisite high level of skill, limited positions, etc, and all those overpaid prima donnas should give all that money to the teachers and firefighters.

But not the billionaire owners, oh no, they EARNED their money.

It's one of the most glaring examples of obtuse racism I've ever seen.

Right. Sadly, I find that those types of people have been fooled into believing that they should ‘decide’ who can be ‘rich’. And of course, given a choice, they don’t want the average pro athlete getting so much money that it lasts generations. They loved it when cats had ‘buying fancy cars but be broke and physically broken down 3 years later’ money. But now a Lebron has ‘production company’ money and he obviously has something resembling ‘real power’ even in the league he plays in and THEY DO NOT LIKE THAT SHIT. But good lucky even having a convo about Brady’s failed attempt at fake retiring, moving to the Fins, and doing whatever the hell after that.

Nationals offered Soto a 15 year 440 million dollar contract.

Anyway, based on that offer, if the Yankees want to keep him, they
are going to have offer a contract that’s north of 400 million.

I need to know the yearly amount of the contract. Is it 8, 10?

He isn’t taking anything less than 7-8 …that’s for sure.
Yankees offered an extension for 7 years. He told them to go fuck
themselves.

Judge wants nothing less than Mike Trout money, so we’re talking close to
36-40 mil a year, and he wants a long term contract.

He wants to be locked and secured all the way to the age of 39-40.

360/10= 36 ml per….. so the offer has to about 10 years.

That wasn’t that bad for the Yankees, even they could have signed him
for a cheaper price years ago.

I thought the Yankees were going to have go north of 400 million to
keep him, but that what the case.

So I guess Jrod or Soto will be the first 500 milli player

Even Pujols fell off for years before this season where he had a decent season for someone his age. These massive contracts for players in their 30s always seem to be busts.

They get to market the name and baseball players play forever even
when their production falls off.

It’s just a matter of time before Judge is moved to first base or DH. His body will
not hold up if he continues to play RF, and he doesn’t even throw his body around
like Griffey did.

He was 32 and signed for 10 years $275 mill.
Yankees fans may not have a lot of love for the guy, and those last couple years were garbage iirc, but they did get a ring out of the deal and he redeemed himself from his previous playoff struggles.

Seems like he might sign another short term deal cause he wants to chase a title.
But with a long term contract- you could convert him to a FT pitcher at some point in the 10 years.

And if he had a bigger physical dip he could be a reliever or closer with value while still part time DHing. Oh the possibilities.

How sway?

All his numbers declined across the board last season, and
he turns 30 next year!

But the Padres signed him for 11 seasons??

I know they aren’t going to allow Tatis to play shortstop anymore in
order to keep him healthy, but god damn that deal is crazy as Fock.

No way is Xander worth that deal…no way. They would have been better off
calling someone up from their farm system….Their luxury tax payout is going to
be insane due to the enormous contracts they will be carrying into next season….

Ain’t no way they will be able to keep Soto after next season

That team has been stacked for a few years now they either can’t all get on the same page or they get guys who ended up being past their prime (some earlier than others)

Obviously, this deal is pretty crazy for a shortstop who just turned 30, and if this was the only player we let go, I’d be fine with it. Can’t be judged in a vacuum though. We’ve been making bad moves for 3 seasons.

The Betts trade was unforgivable. This sucks too. If they don’t lock up Devers long term, I’m not giving this team any money for the next decade. Fuck the owners and fuck Chaim Bloom.

Mookie while they were in their primes. Once they get close to thirty, you dump
them and let someone else pay a high price for their twilight years…

Mookie will never hit those highs again and neither will Xander.

Sox had one of the highest payrolls for years…..You can’t be mad at them for saving
money and rebuilding.

But low sell high. Astros won the chip and look at their payroll.

This is not a team that needs to save money. They have their own TV network. They sell out nearly every game while charging whatever they feel like.

And Mookie absolutely should have been locked up long-term. He was only 27 when we traded him lol. You simply don’t let a talent like that leave.

>

I mean sure. But who tf are we buying in return? If you let people go, you have to replace the production. We overpaid to fix our bullpen. That’s the only thing we did all off-season.

The Red Sox will be just fine, and other stars will rise out of the organization.

Plus the Sox offered him like what 160 for 6 years if I’m
not mistaken. He isn’t worth more than that.

>basement prices.

We are not the Marlins! We do not have to save pennies in hopes to compete every once in a while. We’ve had awful contracts like Carl Crawford and Pablo Sandoval that would have killed another franchise, and we laughed about them after the fact on our way to the World Series.

>
>The Red Sox will be just fine, and other stars will rise out

>Y’all just won the WS in 2018.

And Chaim Bloom, who took the GM role in 2020, has been making terrible moves that make it increasingly unlikely that we will get back there. We lucked into the ALCS in 2021 in spite of those moves. I don’t see that happening again. Especially not in the AL East.

>

I already said he’s not worth the money/years that he got. Like I said, if this was the one Sox player we missed out on re-signing, I absolutely wouldn’t care. This comes after a series of moves that are head-scratchers. Again, all they did this off-season was overpay to fix the bullpen. Great strategy!

I like the 1-4 in our rotation a bit better now (as decently as Bassitt pitched in September). If Jake ends up giving the Rangers 200+ IP I'll be stunned, and I like Quintana/Senga better than Bassitt/Walker.

He is only 28. Now that’s a good deal. If anyone should have gotten
a 300 million dollar contract for double digit years, it should have been him.

Dansby numbers are on the rise…this makes that Xander’s deal look crazy as hell
by the Padres, when they could have gotten a better SS, who’s younger, for a lot
less.

How did the Cubs pull this off?

Like I said, in a vacuum, not signing 30-year old Xander to an 11 year deal makes sense, but when you’ve already traded a 27-year old MVP and you’re not giving a serious offer to your 26-year old star (the only star remaining), then you’re simply not trying to compete. Just tell the guy you’re letting him walk next year. Plus, the assumption all along was that the move to trade Mookie was intended to save money to keep Xander and Raffy… whoops! Guess that was a lie!

Fire Chaim Bloom yesterday. He cannot be the GM of a team that has a bunch of money.

There is nothing medically wrong with him. They just had their doctors make a claim to
give them an excuse to renege on the deal. He had already been cleared by doctors and
physicians, and he was even cleared by the Mets.

They get to hide behind the CBA by keeping their claims confidential, which protects
them from any type of legal issues surrounding their claims.

Even with Correa, they didn't have a great chance to win the division, with the Padres spending like a rich kid in a penny candy store and the Dodgers, well, being the Dodgers. Even with their loss of talent.

I guess if the Giants signed Judge and they thought signing Correa was the move that put them over the top, it would make sense.

But that 30+ San Francisco would spend on Correa could have been split onto two quality players or stored away to dive into next year's FA class.

I guess there is a problem. The Mets initially stated that there wasn’t any
issues with Correa’s health.

Now, they have some concerns!

Why in the fock did they jump in in the first place and clear him, and then
agree to sign him?

6-7 years on the same annual salary would have been sufficient…

Here is the thing if he plays like shit from here on out they will

No, they responded to the current market (finally). Also, again, they have LOADS of money.

You said the same thing about Mookie. Why do you keep acting like it’s bad to sign 26-27 year olds? How many 22 year old stars do you think are on the market?

Which… he wouldn’t have agreed to given the current market.

Yeah, if this mid-20s star randomly decides to suck next year and continues to suck for another decade, it will be a bad contract. Genius level analysis. Really top notch.

Just like he came up in Boston, so can another one…see Houston.

The annual salary isn’t the problem, the years are. That’s my point.

Houston is a top contending team every year with a medium payrol…once
stars get big looking for huge salaries, they move on to another player..Orioles
are following that same formula and are coming up. Look at what they did this year.

Quit falling in love with players…it’s a business, and the goal is to buy low
and sell high…not the other way around.

Now you got 300 milli and 11 years wrapped up into this dude….

Yes, I know, but you’re acting like we can get him or anyone of that talent level to sign for just 6 years. It’s a fantasy. That’s not where the market is. And it’s better to sign a 26 year old 3B for 11 years than a 30 year old SS for the same time.

>
>Houston is a top contending team every year with a medium
>payrol…

Lol, they do not have a “medium” payroll. They’ve been just outside of $200 mill for the past few seasons, and they were in the top 5 until last year.

once
>stars get big looking for huge salaries, they move on to
>another player..

I mean if those players are old, sure. I’ve repeatedly asked you what players are out there who can replace Mookie and Devers level production and are younger than 26-27. You can’t answer the question, because those players only exist in your mind.

>Now you got 300 milli and 11 years wrapped up into this
>dude….

Again, the Red Sox have LOADS of money and will continue to do so for the next decade. We shrug off bad contracts like they’re nothing. They were right to lock in Devers and they should have done the same for Mookie.

first off baseball players don't reach full free agency until they have 6(consecutive I believe) years of major league service, most players don't hit that mark until late 20's in some cases 30(Aaron Judge)

In response to Reply # 104

Here's the article: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/carlos-correas-new-new-deal-sends-him-back-to-minnesota/

But basically, the Mets seemed to have the most accordion-ing options on their deal, even more than the Twins. After the initial 12/315mm got scuttled, fangraphs seems to think they offered 6/157.5mm with the potential for that contract to literally double (that makes 315mm then, right?) with some playing time incentives.

Feels like a smart line to draw for the Mets if his medical report was that concerning. They're the rare MLB team that's presently stacked enough where Correa was basically a luxury for them. And even though they're definitely more spendy than the Twins are, it sort of makes sense that they wanted him to prove his health to the extreme 157.5mm degree if they don't strictly *need* him.

Twins deal is basically the same shape but a different size. Same guaranteed years. Much bigger annual guarantee. And I assume he wouldn't have even bothered continuing to negotiate with the Mets if those options didn't vest automatically with full, healthy seasons like they are in Minnesota.

109. "Maybe - but definitely when but paired with the financial commitment"
In response to Reply # 108

We may be saying almost identical things in response to really different circumstances. I've been reading this thread, but I didn't bother to check up above before I started this reply: how excited were you when you thought Carlos Correa was going to be a Met? Was it "oh! we NEED him" excited or "oh great, that would be helpful" excited?

Things happen over time, but teams obviously worry more when there's a chance that those things are predictable in a way that prevents insurance from covering a nine-figure contract. He's never spent time on the DL for a leg injury in his MLB career. And the incident that occurred this late-season that led to the issue apparently re-appearing didn't even prevent him from playing 25 games in the last month of the season and going .376/.427/.584.

There's only evidence that something might be wrong with him, and if he were just a pretty good shortstop out there trying to land a 3/50mm deal or something nobody would blink because those are small denominations for these clubs. I don't know. In the fullness of time, something is going to happen. People get injured. Especially when they play up-middle-positions that require a ton of athleticism. Especially when they start getting older. The problem is that the medical information is giving teams a hint for when and where that might occur, and if there's a hint - that's a problem for insurance.

The crazy thing about being a Twins fan and watching him play was that I had to be reminded of the sliding incident that started this because it really didn't seem like a big deal at the time. He slid, was slow getting up, used some troublesome language ("vibration" is not great) in describing what happened, but he didn't even leave the game and as I mentioned above - stayed healthy and played really well later.

I suspect our perspectives on this are skewed by the present conditions of our teams. You're a Mets fan. Your team can win the World Series without Carlos Correa. You'd be better if you had Carlos Correa, but if there's a chance that signing him would end in disaster and tears and prevent you from winning (for instance) ANOTHER world series in the following years, then you can say "thanks but no thanks" - which seems pretty much what the second Mets offer (if it can be believed) was saying. I'm a Twins fan. The world is big and weird, but I think it's fair to say this team can't win the World Series without Carlos Correa and they probably aren't even a good pick to make the post-season without him, garbage AL Central notwithstanding. Your team has rarely been burned by being too cautious. My team made being too cautious into an actual team identity.

111. "Exactly - and being a Twins fan means being bored of sanity"
In response to Reply # 110

I've had a ton of people asking me about this signing, and I'm ready to do the full walleye on it and talk about whether this team is presently enough of a contender to make this worth it (maybe not!); or whether the team's farm system really requires going this deep on a star shortstop (team's two best prospects can plausibly play shortstop); or whether a Correa deal that explodes into 35mm annually of dead money until almost 2030 is something the roster can survive (almost certainly not).

But my only real, clear answer so far has been NOT MY MONEY.

I loved it when this team started the off-season with a clearly articulated payroll expectation and I could play pretend-GM and add everything up to 65mm, including expected arbitration amounts. But then they got bad and boring and honestly, "boring" was way worse. I'm 43 and I can live with losing. But watching the same baseball game get played over and over and over again is excruciating. And I've already got the game memorized: An iffy mid-rotation starter who can't strike anybody out survives the first two innings but throws 50 pitches to get through them, then slowly unravels and is removed with one out in the fifth inning, down 3-4 runs and already digging into the team's bullpen depth. The relievers try to stop the bleeding and kind of succeed, but "kind of" isn't enough for an offense that is squeezing out 4.5 runs a game because only two guys can actually hit the ball over the wall.

Spending NOT MY MONEY to make sure I don't have to watch that game 60 times in 2023 is an absolutely acceptable outcome for me. I love it. The New York Mets have a long and well-documented history of sane heads *not* prevailing. Is Bobby Bonilla's contract even over yet? This is a good outcome for Mets fans. Dreaming big on dropping Correa into that lineup and winning 115 games is absolutely your right and privilege as a fan, but you're smart enough to know the downside. Plus, I love watching your awesome team play with or without Correa. You get to enjoy ownership that is insane in the good ways. And I get to pretend that the Twins are a rich, spendy team before the inevitable consequences happen.

But with many of these MLB contracts, I don't know if SD will get good value once the contract ages toward the latter half.

But it's a sign their owner is willing to spend BIG to get a title. If they win one or maybe two, the contract will be worth it. If not...
