but he just seems reckless with the ball at times and too turnover prone to be your "survive the last 20 minutes" defensive sub (bad memories of that awful turnover-into-a-goal against Mexico two years ago)

>and Haji was a like-for-like for Sargent.

Wright looked comatose out there. you have been sitting down all game! not to mention that open shot he flubbed in the final minutes.

wouldn't "expect" the US to win.

gonna be tougher if Pulisic can't play.

still gobsmacked Berhalter didn't take Pefok and Pepi on a team that needs striker help like it needs air to breathe.

De Jong has been great, but the other 2 have not been impressive in any game no matter who they've been

McKennie/Musah/Adams has looked wayyyyy better as a unit

Van Gaal is apparently not inclined to play Xavi Simons at all. As someone who roots for the Dutch thats been annoying. As an opposing fan im perfectly okay with it.

when his parents are from Ghana, and he mostly grew up in England and Italy.
Had he not went to Valencia, where the USMNT were able to reach out to him
through one of their assistant coaches, he would have committed to play
for England.

His mother gave birth to him in America while she was on vacation (lol)

Dude is English, Ghanaian, American and a New Yorker!

Changing out 9 players is never a great idea, especially against a motivated team. Feels like we deserved the draw with how we dominated the end but whatever, we're neither as good as some saw us after two games, nor as bad as what today implies

Which is a good luxury to have. On the other side of the coin, winning is a habit, and taking any opponent lightly could break the starters' rhythm.

Then again, Deschamps has earned the leeway to do that I suppose.

Belgium finished in third place in 2018 WC, and had an
outstanding performance in that WC. And Hazard who was hands
down the best player in that World Cup won the silver ball. They gave
the golden ball to Modric simply because Croatia made it to the finals.

Also during that WC they smashed Brazil and England.

They lost the semifinal game against France, who won the World Cup.
And if you watched that game, France played very very conservative…
more like parking. Belgium lost 1-0.

They came extremely close to winning it all, so they were far far from being a waste.
They simply came up short, but at the same time that golden generation produced
some of the greatest soccer players to ever play game.

Sure, a bronze in a WC is not nothing. But Belgium was a top-5 team talent-wise, with world class players in their prime & steadfast continuity for the better part of a decade.

For comparison's sake, I'd venture that most everyone would say the Figo-era Portugal was a similarly-floppy generation... and they at least made the finals of a major tournament.

and rightfully won the golden boot.

But as far as best player goes, controlling and commanding the game
and making others better….hands down goes to Hazard, then Modric…in
my opinion.

Golden Ball is presented to the World Cup’s BEST PLAYER…and yes Modric won it,
but had Belgium made it to the final Hazard would have won it.

It wasn’t given to any player on the French team and they won the title…

Hazard and Modric were above all in that WC….which is why they went 1 and 2.

I’m taking anything away from Mbappe. He was tremendous for France….

But he might get the Golden Ball this World Cup.

I guess I just can't understand how highly rated Belgium was coming in to this thing. They are WASHED. I'm not sure how this outcome is interesting or surprising, apart from being the definitive nail in the coffin for the Hazard/Lukaku/KDB era. Their *actual* window closed in 2018, imo.

(All of which, as a Roma fan, is wonderful to see - when Radja Nainggolan was the best box-to-box midfielder in Serie A, Roberto Martinez left him at home because he smoked cigarettes sometimes. GOOOOOD)

Meanwhile, their opposition was literally in the final last time and still has arguably the best midfield, and midfielder, in the world (not to mention most of their best players are contemporaries of this would-be great Belgium side... and very much still in form).

Oh and Gvardiol is clearly something. Leipzig gonna get a lot for him.

watched one lick of any live WC games, only box scores and espn highlights.

As KDB stated, Belgium is just too old to be a competitive team, so that is pretty much
the end of Belgium’s golden generation. There will definitely be an overhaul with the
roster moving forward, and it will probably be quite some time before the country
produces another group of talented, prolific players.

Some will say they failed, or that they were overrated, and those individuals would
be entitled to their opinions. However, they illustrated and displayed some beautiful
soccer when they were in their primes , and they left us with some memorable
moments ( the last minute of the game vs Japan, and Hazard ripping up Brasíl).

You made your country proud, and put an elite face on Belgium soccer.

Respect is given.

Ayew sets the table nicely with one of the weakest penalties I've ever seen (seriously, just take the fucking thing directly), then Uruguay promptly hits 'em with a two piece.

Yes, this is an attempted jinx.

Very enjoyable as a neutral.

Ain’t gonna break that Dutch line with Walker Zimmerman out there shanking every other forward pass he attempts.

Move Weah to the false 9 and bring on Gio. And maybe Aaronson for Weston. As you said, we need players who can do things with the ball at their feet.

You gotta have your head on a swivel all game like you’ve just done an 8 ball.

These boys seem a lil complacent. Like getting out of the group was their World Cup final (although it kinda was).

Given our inadequacies in various places, the Dutch were set up in a way that only a worldie and/or lucky strike would beat them (being a threat from a corner was rightfully not a concern). And they were clearly drilled with instructions on what to do on the counter. Credit to them for being clinical.

Gotta find a number 9 and better/more dynamic CB’s. That plus age and experience will do us well in 2026. I don’t see defenders and our DM falling asleep at the wheel like this in four years. I also assume we’ll be more clinical up front as guys enter their prime.

but let's not forget that the U.S. has qualified for the Olympics in 2024 for the first time since 2008. a lot of the young guys on this team would qualify as U23 to play in that tournament (plus 3 senior players). that will be good experience for them in addition to CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup tournaments coming up in 2023. should be a fun cycle.
