Plus, isn't that what we want GMs to do if a team is close, go all in and take a chance?
But it's been a perfect storm of bad circumstances. Not only has the offensive line been bad, they've had a number of injuries so they haven't had time to gel or gain experience. According to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, they've had 10 different starting lineups on the offensive line. If the line was playing better, I think a lot of the issues on offense are able to be solved.
Then OBJ hasn't returned and while his contribution to the team was most felt in the playoffs. The Rams were looking forward to have him step in and be a great compliment to Cupp. I guess Robinson was a nice insurance policy. I don't know why he hasn't worked out at all. The indication during camp was that he was going to really work out.
In retrospect, maybe they should have spent the money on Robinson on a tackle. If OBJ hadn't gotten hurt, I think they do.
McVay's teams, when they work best, leverage the run. With the line playing poorly, Akers' inability to play well (when he's in the lineup) they can't run and use play action to have explosives and score enough points to lean on the defense.
Yes, they've lacked 1st round picks. Surprisingly, they usually end up with the normal 6 or 7 picks every draft because of compensatory picks. With that out of the way they've done remarkably well finding players lower in the draft to step in and play at a high level, relative to their draft status. But their lack of success the last couple of years really set the stage for this year.
Plus, they've had a significant brain drain over the last few seasons. Staley, O'Connell, and some other coaches have moved on from the staff that would be great to lean on this year. O'Connell especially was a sounding board for McVay. He's said that he misses his presence this year.
All in all, it would have been great to bring the bulk of last year's team back and make a run. Repeating is hard, and even if the team were playing well, it wouldn't have been likely they win again.
Like you said, Dstl, this offseason is going to be interesting. Does McVay decide to retire and spend time with his new family. Donald could retire. And speaking of picks, they don't have their 1st round pick.
The disappointment this year is worse because of the promise the season held. The NFC looked down and the Rams pulled in a lot of high profile free agents so they looked like the favorite. But now they're going to wander around for a bit in a new place - outside of contention. <--- Me when my head hits the pillow
