He's had more QBs in 5 years than some coaches have had in the last 15 years.

Maybe he's getting the ax cuz he vouched for bringing those dudes in.

He got stuck with Brisket after Luck rolled out.

Then, Rivers, Wentz, and Ryan? Yikes...that's a 3 pack of back to back to back bad QB scouting. You know it is scary when Wentz probably had the highest ceiling of those 3 by the time they got to Indy.

Maybe Rivers getting them to the playoffs was the worst thing that could've happened to them.

Unfortunately he retired after his only season with the Colts. Rivers probably wasn’t getting the Colts to the Super Bowl but we would have been good enough to get them a division title and a playoff spot.

In response to Reply # 2

his offensive scripts were horrible. he did not make adjustments. he's lost to Jacksonville on the road 5 years straight. Colts choked away the playoffs last year. he personally wanted Wentz. he would underuse Jonathan Taylor to keep throwing the ball in critical situations. he never won the division.

he will catch on somewhere else but the message was stale here and the team was getting worse.

If Irsay hired a black interim coach to tank the rest of this season, wouldn't that be exactly what people on this board complain about?

Jeff Saturday is a legendary Colts player. If he does well, Irsay has an excuse to give him the job. There is almost no chance Saturday does well here, though. If he does, he probably deserves the job.

Them: Irsay can’t hire those guys because they are under contract.. what is the problem

lmao.. the amount of ignorance some have to justify racism and nepotism is astounding.

We live on a planet where NO ONE wants to be told what to do. And you know for sure that people ‘with money’ think they’re supposed to be at the top of the list or people who get to do whatever they want. And, somehow, the average bro meathead doofus is all about keeping that party rolling. But don’t let any of ‘these players’ step out of line in any way or it’s a wrap.

Yes, I’m confident there’s some cism in there with that, but I’m always impressed at how folks are programmed to take exception to almost any new big contract for a player. But when ESPN forks over big money to have 1 game a week plus highlights, crickets.

Underachieving aside, you've had a lot of injuries at key positions. Since, Syaley doesn't have his best players, can his talent as a coach be fully measured?

Or does the poor defensive play the last two years show he is spread too thin and lacking necessary expertise to maximize the side of the team he was brought in to fix?

Would you be open to bringing him back next year but with a different coordinators or are you just done?

outside of Josh Jacobs, everything about this team is worse than it was a year ago

Carr is the obvious fall guy but somehow he throws for nearly 5K yards and makes the playoffs last year after losing his star receiver and head coach. This year with the addition of Davante and his running back having a career year, he's playing worse than ever, and all this team is known for this season is giving up comfortable leads.

There's really nothing the guy who failed as Broncos HC, and ghosted Indy has done in Vegas that says this team believes in him, or should.

Agree 100%. The Raiders can't afford to fire McDaniels and don't want to pay Carr so Carr is the scapegoat. Carr has never even played on a team with a top 15 defense. The Raiders drafts since Carr has gotten there have been laughable. Carr is lucky to get out of there to be honest.

When you cannot afford to fire the coach, something has got to give and it looks like Carr is the odd man out. Thing is, Carr seems like a really good dude. He'll get snatched up pretty quickly by another organization.

average D ranking through his career is 26. i can't even keep track of how many crucial games that relied on a defensive stop in under a minute have been blown. of course this season is a a stand-out, and i'm sure they're it bottom 3 in most categories. Maxx Crosby is an absolute terror but he can't do it alone.

>Carr
>is lucky to get out of there to be honest.

he's said repeatedly he never wants to play anywhere else, but there's no way i see him going out like this. being tossed aside/disrespected by the team he's given his all to. Interested to see where he ends up. i heard talk of the Jets, but he's not a cold weather guy so that might be a mistake lol.

Denver has no picked because of the Russell deal. If the Broncos hire Payton they would have to give up more picks to the Saints for him, New Orleans reportedly wants multiple high picks.

Payton would inherit an older QB that is on the downside of his career and no higher round draft picks to replace Russell or draft any other players.

I just don’t see him going there. Older QB with a big contract and not many draft picks doesn’t seem desirable as some of the other spots open or about to open.

So they would have to give up picks in next years draft, probably another first and maybe even another 2nd.

That would be 3 years without a 1st or 2nd round pick. While that worked out well for a while for LA and they got a SB out of it, I am not sure it would work out well for Denver.

I also think Arizona makes more sense as they have a younger QB, offensive pieces to work with and draft picks.

Colts were going to pick in the teens when he was hired, and his seven-game losing streak got them all the way up to the 4th pick (QB secured)

his tanking was done every which way possible, but yesterday was especially poetic, against the team that held the #1 pick all season:

Colts 31, Houston 24
Houston, 4th and 12 (1:26 left in Q4) -- Davis Mills completes 30-yard pass to Brandin Cooks

Houston, 4th and 20 (0:50 left in Q4) -- Davis Mills completes 28-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Akins

Houston, Two-Point Conversion -- Davis Mills completes 2-yard pass to Jordan Akins, conversion succeeds

Houston 32, Colts 31

an award-winning tanking sequence

Ron will be here one more year tops through the next season. The purchase probably won't be complete until all the best candidates are taken for this cycle. The new owner will have to deal with Riverboat for a season and then be able to hand pick someone.

The Rooney Rule is a sham, and based on recent coaching hires, NFL team owners know it

https://sports.yahoo.com/the-rooney-rule-is-a-sham-and-based-on-recent-coaching-hires-nfl-team-owners-know-it-200730103.html

The Rooney Rule is a sham, and based on recent coaching hires, NFL team owners know it

It still exists on paper, and the league continues to tinker with it in performative efforts to "strengthen" the policy, but in early 2018, Goodell signaled to team owners that the rule was little more than window dressing.

Team owners' moves since then show they very much picked up his cue.

If you recall, that's when Raiders team owner Mark Davis finally landed the head coach of his dreams: Jon Gruden. Davis was so obsessed with Gruden, who had coached the franchise years earlier when his late father was still running the team, that even as he hired and then extended Jack Del Rio as head coach, he made it clear more than once that he "was in love with Jon, and if he ever got the chance, he was going to hire him," Del Rio has said.

As the 2017 season came to a close, it was an open secret that Gruden had finally acquiesced to Davis' many advances and would leave the ESPN booth to return to coaching. Davis admitted to reporters in early January 2018 that he had come to an agreement with Gruden weeks earlier. So if the two alleged interviews that Davis did at some point with two Black coaches, including Tee Martin, then an assistant coach at USC, and Bobby Johnson, the team's tight ends coach, didn't already look like shams, Davis confirmed that they effectively were.

Despite clear evidence, after a quick investigation (wink, wink), Goodell said Davis and the Raiders were not in violation of the Rooney Rule and declined to fine or otherwise punish the club owner and team.

That day, Goodell sent up the signal to all franchise owners: The rule is there, but you don't have to honor it.

At the start of that 2018 season, there were seven Black head coaches. As of this writing, there are two.

Rooney Rule started strong before hitting a wall after five years
For much of its 20 years of existence the Rooney Rule has felt like little more than public relations, though in its early years, it yielded hopeful results in improving the diversity of NFL head coaches, particularly Black coaches. Implemented at the start of the 2003 hiring cycle, it led to seven Black head coaches being hired in its first five years, when there were 32 total openings. Prior to that, the modern league had seen only four full-time Black head coaches, beginning with Art Shell with the Raiders in 1989. (Fritz Pollard was player-coach of the Akron Pros in 1921, before the league started dropping Black players from rosters in 1926 and banning them entirely from 1934 to 1946.)

Yeah it’s funny they said players that played for him when he was an assistant in SF said they had no idea he was black. He didn’t make it known until questions arose about him getting the Miami job

115. "Bucs fire Byron Leftwich (link & swipe)"

As tough as it is for blacks to get head coaching positions, this probably set him back another 10 years.

***

https://sports.yahoo.com/bucs-fire-offensive-coordinator-byron-152023077.html

"The Bucs have fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. The team is making sweeping changes to their coaching staff following an 8-9 regular season and wildcard loss to Dallas. As many as five offensive assistants and two on defense are expected to be let go." - @NFLSTROUD

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are wasting little time making big changes to their coaching staff after getting bounced from the playoffs Monday night.

Offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has been fired, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

After coordinating one of the NFL’s most prolific offenses over his first three years in Tampa, Leftwich’s unit plummeted in 2022, averaging just 18 points per game, and finishing dead last in the league in every major rushing category. After averaging more than 30 points per game over the previous two season, Tampa Bay scored 30 points just twice this year.

This marks the first big staff change for head coach Todd Bowles, who will now look to replace Leftwich with a new coordinator who can maximize the immense talent the Bucs still have on that side of the ball.

Leftwich is just a year removed from being a hot name in the head-coaching carousel, but will now have to look for another assistant role elsewhere.

Head coach should have actually been the one to be fired, but they're getting rid of the OC instead.

GM & HC will probably get fired next year anyways after they go 5-12, so it's whatever I suppose

Leftwich was dealt a tough hand when the o line imploded (Marpet unexpectedly retiring, Jensen injury, Stinnie injury) and Gronk decided not to come back.

Licht didn't help matters by wasting 6 million on the corpse of Julio (cause Brady told him to, let's be honest) and thinking Akeem Hicks could cheaply replace Suh. He should have found have a way to keep JPP too... Tryon-Shoyinka didn't make that step forward.

Also, it looks like he whiffed in the draft *again* this year (never forget, he's the one that took Aguayo...). The OG and DT he picked in early rounds have NOT looked good so far. Then there's the wasted 2nd rd on trask the year prior.

Bowles meanwhile was a disaster with clock management, not to mention being way too conservative (complete opposite from Arians). I've no inside info, but I'm confident he was overruling Leftwich and Brady at times. His defensive prep clearly slipped too, once he became HC (blown coverages against Cowboys being yet another example)

People were getting mad at Leftwich playcalling, but the o line problems, Licht fucking up yet again, Bowles being inherently conservative, and of course Brady declining all factor in.

Just how great of a coach Bruce Arians is. But for the people who know.....that's no surprise. Once he stepped away everything was going to suffer.

Leftwich out of everyone probably missed him the most but this may actually be the best thing for him.

The Bucs are going to regret this even if they have Arians "upstairs".

we experience this on the daily yet they act like the NFL is some special place and the real world doesn’t act the same way.

we have been passed over for jobs we were more qualified for than the other candidate. We have watched companies hire incompetence simply because they feel more comfortable.

Frank Reicht is walking into another Indy situation. He will probably have the same results as he had the last few years in Indy.

They keep saying coaches want the best man for the job. Not true at all. I truly believe this is about money. Owners are terrified of giving that much money and power to a Black man. Its that simple.

with multiple QB's but all they talk about is what a great offensive coach he will be in Carolina and the ties he still has to the Carolina community when he was a player there 30 years ago and that he still owns a home there and his daughter was hired by the team marketing department LAST WEEK as if any of that has ANYTHING to do what kind of football coach he will be.

people like Mike McCarthy, Brandon Staley, Ron, Rivera, Josh McDaniels, Todd Bowles and Matt Eberflus will be given another chance...

Who's on deck to get the available jobs?

SF DC DeMeco Ryans is a current hot name out there...

Sean Payton is lurking out there for any team willing to pay his high price...

Eric Bienemy's name has been out there so long he may be fading to the background...

Dan Quinn had said he's staying in Dallas...

I don't see why anyone would be interested in Kellen Moore...

There have been rumblings about Jim Harbaugh returning to the NFL...

Bronco's DC Ejiro Evero has experience on both sides of the ball...

Bengals OC Brian Callahan(son of Bill) will get a lot of attention especially if Cincy advances to the SB again even though he doesn't call plays...

Eagles OC Shane Steichen's name has been out there...

I'm sure there are a ton of other 30-something hot shot coordinators that will come to the forefront...

Frank Reich was kind of out of nowhere I don't think anybody expected him to get another HC shot so fast...

Former Vikings HC and current Buffalo DC Leslie Frazier's name has come up...

Some people think former Indy and Detroit HC Jim Calwell deserves another shot he still has a .563 winning percentage...

Will Steve Wilks get a legit shot?

Will Brian Flores?

Will Raheem Morris?

Bengals OL coach is working magic with that talent up front, but the OC has Burrow, Chase, Higgins and Mixon -- they should be a top ten offense regardless

KC now in 3 of the last 4 SB and have been to 5 straight AFCCGs. No reason that man should have to go anywhere to prove anything. He has already earned a HC job with his work in KC.

These dudes do not get where they got to in life looking at things like “this isn’t the greatest situation imma wait.” They believe they are the great situation. Houston is scorched earth perhaps he wants to build a team and org in his own image rather than being handed a broken qb like Russ and having to make the best of it.

High draft picks and a free hand to make over the roster, combined with low expectations and the certainty that you will get AT LEAST two years to do your thing. Probably 3 if you make some headway. No one is going to fire a coach every year, three years in a row, unless something goes VERY wrong.

the Commanders will probably fire Rivera so unless Bienemy got some sort of HC-in-waiting guarantee that would be a bad move, the Jets already hired Hackett as OC, who knows what the QB situations Baltimore and Tennessee will be

The goal post keeps moving. No other prior Reid OC had to go through this constant questioning as to who is calling the plays.

Okay, so what if Bienemy is not the play caller. Is there not value in putting together the plan and designing plays under Reid? He's been the #2 for five years now. I wish someone just had the balls to say out loud what the issue is.

in your general thought, but you just keep saying the same thing over and over, responding to particular instances with your claim of racial bias. This doesn't make a case that an objective reader could come in and agree or disagree with. Crunching the numbers could make your case.

Herbert and Hurts had their best years with him as their OC. He has shown he can build an offense around young QBs and the Colts are going to have to draft a young QB and develop them.

and he's developed Herbert and Hurts, and got one of them to a SB when people questioned if they were really THAT guy (Hurts).

look, the NFL is dumb racist when it comes to coaching. black coaches don't even get a CHANCE to fail while white coaches just be failing like rain be falling.

and, there's probably a 99% chance that the Colts choice here is a little race-y.

but i don't think it's fair to act like dude is unqualified, which is not to say more deserving (in the sense that they've put in more time) black coaches weren't passed over.

but let's ignore that. he started as a Quarterbacks coach in 2016 per the resume you posted. 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022...so my bad, 7 years of high level NFL coaching.

he seems plenty qualified per his own merits.

i'm not arguing that. i already talked about the bullshit as far as that is concerned.

your initial comments on him made it seem like you thought they hired a guy who likes to play madden on the weekends.

I don't know what you're arguing anyway. You're acting like racial disparity isn't an issue with NFL coaching hires. If you believe that fine.

If you believe Steichen has a great resume' and is worthy of a HC job that's fine too.

i guess in your book.

some people call it facts.

i never said there aren't people who deserve that job first. i literally said no one should be allowed to get a HC job before Bienemy, and he's not the only one.

that doesn't mean dude isn't QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB.

why are you posting dumb?

and, like I said above, I think you are probably right in a broad sense (though it's not exactly clear what claims you are making). But I think it'd be helpful if you got more detailed in your analysis. Rather than just hammering the same conviction over and over into an echo chamber.

It's an interesting problem, maybe okp could work collectively on it and produce some worthwhile research. or at least, read and discuss the work of others in this area.

actually putting numbers to questions like: are white men hired as head coaches despite less high level previous coaching exp? are white coaches given a longer leash to work through losing seasons? what are the racial trends over time in hiring--head coaches, offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators. what are the racial demographics of coaches in cfb? etc etc.

it strikes me as a deep systemic problem, hard to solve in a day. there are top "schools"/"trees" that appear to be considered feeders worth plucking from. why is this so heavily biased toward whites? understanding how coaches that end up ascending to NFL HC first get into coaching and progress seems important. and why/where black men are getting blocked along those lines.

just some thoughts. i'd like to learn more. sure it's just a message board, my "trolling" is the result of having read a lot of predictable posts on here for quite a while and not feeling like they are building to anything constructive.

curious what solutions you propose to reduce the racial disparity. And what factors do you think have created it in the first place? obv, cism and the old boy network. do you think quotas should be established? how would that work?

looking at the Steichen hire, it is clear that it is all in the same tree. Jim Irsay, Frank Reich, Phil Rivers, Nick Sirianni, Steichen. Irsay is clearly fond of that "offensive brain trust". Whether he was wise to dip into it again, I don't know. Steichen has a good track record with QBs (6 years around Rivers, Herbert's first 2, Hurts' last 2).

A lot of HC hires seem to be based on: "this guy understands how the modern NFL works, is a qb whisperer, knows how to maximize QB/offensive potential". My question is who are the black candidates who have been in qb rooms and are getting passed over. And if there is a lack of such candidates, why? At what point are black men being failing to get into the ranks of these trees that NFL teams seem to prize for plucking HCs. where are the shoulders turning cold, why? where is the meritocracy legitimate, where is it failing black candidates?

understanding these dynamics I think is important for understanding the problem and generating solutions.

One thing I see is that a lot of these early 40s, late 30s hires have been immersed in the command and control aspects of NFL offensives from an early age. Like mid-20s on in the top secret world of scheming NFL offenses to points, beating defenses.

Are less black candidates being admitted to this cloister at early enough ages?

A possible factor with someone like Bieniemy is that he played football into his 30s. Sirianni, Steichen et al were already qb coaches at the age Bieniemy retired as a player.

I think you will and others have me wrong in this post. I'm not in here to argue against anyone, I'm interested in understanding the problem better. It is very complex, lots of factors to consider. Really drilling into it and getting a good understanding of what is what seems important.

Is it that black coaches with similar resumes are being passed over or is it deeper rooted: that black coaches have not been hired at the right career junctions to put them on paths of development, resume-building to become what NFL teams seem to value right now?

A combination of both probably. Seems to me the old boy's network/coaching circles of trust have not been including black coaches at the right time. And so when Sirianni goes to the Superbowl in his 2nd year, his right hand man (who is seen as an important factor in Hurts' ascension) is considered the right guy for the job of molding the next great qb. having an elite qb seems generally accepted as step #1 in a team going from bad or mediocre to good and possibly superbowl champs. so you see Indy's reasoning here.

the question is why these coaching trees/qb rooms are often full of only white men. And how to change that. Or maybe these teams are off base and should consider more coaches beyond just bleeding edge in the ear of the qb guys.

with Bieniemy, who knows. there seems to definitely be something. maybe it is all racism. maybe his race, his style of gladhanding, talking shop, leaves white team execs wary in interviews. whereas maybe its all handslapping and 18 holes of old boy network golf like fish in water for the whites.

you COULD argue his resume is not as good as Steichen's though...Shady McCoy went at him saying basically he is the running game guy. Maybe teams doubt he'd be able to succeed without Reid. Steichen learned from Reich, Sirianni...then they left...and he continued to have success with Rivers and then Herbert had very very good years 1 and 2 under him. So there is evidence of him being able to operate successfully without the same mentor coach in place above him.

i'm not here to deny all the claims of racism, systemic bias being made. just trying to understand better. hoping to learn, so lmk where I'm off point

Guys like Jim Caldwell, Leslie Frazier, Raheem Morris, Anthony Lynn and Vance Joseph are coordinators for the life at this point.

instead of arguing for Steichen's qualifications, the question is why a minority coach never jumps to the front of the line with similar or lesser resumes

the whole exhausting point of racism is having to prove racism exists

we got people looking up NFL quality control job postings and asking the "numbers be crunched"

The obviousness of it all is hilarious and depressing in equal parts.

But hey, Demeco Ryans gets to be the escape goat as one of the worst franchises in the NFL tries another rebuild.

>instead of arguing for Steichen's qualifications, the
>question is why a minority coach never jumps to the front of

who are the black candidates who are getting passed over? Bieniemy is the common refrain. who else? is there a lack of candidates? if yes, is it because of racial biases that excluded candidates ~10 years ago from entering positions that could have put them on trajectories to be ready in 2023. or are NFL teams valuing the wrong things in their hiring decisions. ie qb whisperer types like Steichen (rivers, herbert hurts) should not be what teams go after.

>the whole exhausting point of racism is having to prove racism
>exists
>

i'm interested in what solutions you see here. ok, there is racism. what can we do about it? what should teams be doing? A 23 year old black man who wants to coach at the highest level--what should he be doing now to put himself in the running? Sirianni entered NFL coaching at 28. Steichen at 26. 10+ seasons of grinding and they've been elevated to the top. at what points are the paths forking for minority coaches?

>we got people looking up NFL quality control job postings and
>asking the "numbers be crunched"

i think understanding the networks involved in these hiring decisions is important. the wapo series on racial disparities in nfl coaching is a good start. these coaching career arcs are publicly documented. far more than your avg corporate career. this area looks ripe for data mining and analysis. with the goal be to understand what is going on and improve the ground for aspirant black coaches.

No one you are talking to is interested in that kind of discussion.

They already know what the problem is, and are more interested in sounding off about it than diving into the details.

I mean, this is OKS, it's not like ANYONE here doesn't realize that racism is part of the problem. We all know that. Reasonable guess that many of the people still posting here are black men lol.

When you start asking how MUCH of the problem, and what other factors may be involved and why, very few people are interested in that convo.

Like, Bienemy not having a job at this point…it's gotta be some factors besides race happening in there, although I have no idea what they are. Black head coaches have been hired while he has been sitting on the bench. It's very odd, but there is something else happening.

As a Bears fan, I can only say that the last Reid OC who got a HC gig was an awful play caller and "offensive mind" but that doesn't necessarily mean anything regarding Bienemy.

Anyway, good luck trying to get The Truth to think beyond any initial assumptions on any subjec

cuz i think you're right...he appears to be too good of candidate to be getting passed over like he is...and he's even gotten passed over by other black coordinators.

so, SOMETHING else has to be going on behind the scenes. either Reid is holding him, or there's some hidden shit that GMs/owners are holding against him.

at this point? i think that maybe Reid has a year or two left max and they just want him to take over once he's gone...or at least i hope it's something as basic as that.

Consultant on Sirianni's team. Steichen was linked in with Reich and Sirianni and is HC now. Not necessarily a bad place to be. Brady will be entering his 6th season as an NFL coach.

...And with Steichen gone, Eagles OC position is open and rumor is it will be Brian Johnson:

"The offensive coordinator is going to be Brian Johnson,” Schefter told Kincade. “I don’t think there’s any question there. You can take it to the bank that he’s going to be the guy there as offensive coordinator."

here's a pic of Brian Johnson: https://static.clubs.nfl.com/image/private/t_editorial_landscape_6_desktop/f_auto/saints/nirpk9uabdvovixn7xqg.jpg

Kyler is coming back who knows when and EB would have been the scapegoat for a bad season and been fired after one year.

that's a distinct possibility now that Kyler's 2024 is likely a wash, and we are going to be trash truck juice. EB does NOT deserve the Wilks treatment and I'm afraid that's what he might have gotten. I would LOVE to see him hired as OC though.

Philadelphia Eagles
In 2021, Gannon was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles as the team's defensive coordinator.

Gannon faced heavy criticism after the Eagles blew a ten point halftime lead and gave up 31 points to lose by a score of 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII. The Eagles became just the second team in NFL history to blow a double digit lead at halftime in Super Bowl history. Gannon was described as failing to adjust in the second half as the Chief's offense scored on every drive in the second half. In the second half, the Eagles secondary appeared confused leaving Chief's receivers wide open at times. Additionally, Gannon was criticized for staying in a soft zone the entire game allowing Chief's quarterback Patrick Mahomes to throw quick passes that prevented the Eagle's defense line from getting any pressure.

Kellen Moore the one that actually has coaching experience was allowed to “mutually part ways” with Dallas instead of being fired so he could slide into the OC job with the Chargers meanwhile Leftwich got fired for trying to prop up a 45yo QB and is left flipping in the wind

I wouldn't be surprised if Rivera and the league already ran the Bienemy hire by the potential buyers. Given the controversy around Bienemy, the widely-known notion that Rivera is a lame duck, and the title of "Associate Head Coach" I can't help but wonder if he's on his way to being our next head coach maybe even as soon as Week 1.

Bienemy nailed the presser. He's got so much more juice than Rivera. Our O-line is dogshit and who knows about our QB situation...but our weapons are borderline elite and Bienemy got me really fired up this morning.
